What was the inspiration behind this release, and what was your favorite part of bringing your vision for this release to life? The fusion of the two genres was the most considerable influence behind this song: connecting two pieces of how I grew up, learning English and Spanish simultaneously while also listening to these types of music—it was enjoyable. In terms of the actual song itself, it was just about the extent to which love can drive us to want someone so much: their presence, their brain, their everything—I just wanted more of someone. I asked for that within the song, even if they're far away from my life. What’s your favorite part of the creative process in general, and any tips for any aspiring musicians out there? My favorite part of this process was taking the time off (3 years) from releasing music and practicing becoming a better artist and songwriter. It was challenging and grueling—many late nights and tears. I am still working through these obstacles now, but I still love it because I am working on telling the truth about myself and the reality of situations that I've gone through. I love it because of what came out of it - beautiful songs, including this one. One of the most significant responsibilities of an artist is to turn that pain or experience into something beautiful, something that people might be able to feel when they hear these songs. I want to continue to break down and get better; I am determined to continue falling in love with the process. Do you have any favorite music-related memories, and what goals do you want to achieve through your music? Some of my favorite memories involve bringing these songs to life - and most of the time, that's alone in my room and used to be in my garage. Recently, I have made a lot of music alone, but experimenting with harmonies and telling my story has always been enjoyable. Some of the best memories I create also stem from performing live. I can recall countless times when my band and I were playing, and I saw everyone, from children to adults, lighting up from the songs we were playing. Watching people dance and all of us being able to connect to a song at that moment is unique. I can't wait to continue creating that connection when people sing my songs one day - in a stadium or a restaurant; both are incredible. If your listeners could take one thing away from your music, what would you want it to be? If my listeners could take one thing away from my music, I would want them to enjoy it. On a long drive or sipping in the evening, I want to represent Guatemala well and also represent children born here but still have a heritage in that country. I want Latina women to know how capable they are of making a difference. I want young girls to continue to create from their hearts and believe in themselves. I hope other artists feel inspired when they hear my music, just like others have inspired me. What’s next for mari? Can we expect to hear more new music soon? Once I heard the beat, I wanted to write a love song and share what I was going through. What was your experience working with featured vocalist Nicki Brown for "Ginja Me?" Was this your first time collaborating with him? Yeah, that was my first collaboration with him. We made the connection on ig, and then we met in France for the recording process. That was a great experience because we weren’t friends in the first place, so we shaped the song together before recording. Afterward, we keep in touch. How is "Ginja Me" different from your previous singles? What makes this song stand out to you? Yeah, it’s quite a bit different from my previous one, which was drill music. However, I used to balance between both styles, Hip hop/rap & Afro genres. What stands out is the feature because I’ve never done that before. Moreover, this track has more surrounding adlibs in terms of space design. We've noticed you have yet to release an EP or an album. Might there be something in the works? What direction are you looking to take your next project? I haven’t received an EP yet, but I have an unreleased single, which is the next one. It’s a hip-hop genre and more dynamic. I wrote the song's hook in about 30 seconds as it was something I felt I wanted to get on paper at the time. Changing my life for the better and staying on the right path to do things the right way, it reflects on my journey as an artist because i live by saying that don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t be something, and I hope Right Way captivates listeners to feel that way! Your music effortlessly blends modern R&B with nostalgic elements, and we love how your persona shines through. How do you balance these influences to create a sound that resonates with listeners? I balance these influences based on my experiences. I like listeners to resonate with my music and say, “Yep, I’ve gone through that; I can relate to this song.” I think that a big thing in this industry is making music that people relate to. As an artist from Perth, Australia, how do you infuse elements of your hometown's culture and atmosphere into your music? Perth is very isolated from East Coast cities and even the world. I make music that fits with the sound outside of Australia to hopefully make a name for myself as an artist from Perth, I think that’s something that would be big for this city, actually putting perth on the map and having eyes from all around the world seeing how talented the artists are in Perth. What inspired you to pursue a music career, and how has your journey been so far? I have been doing music since I was young, inspired by artists like Chris Brown, Michael Jackson, Usher, Justin Bieber, and many more. It really influenced me to be on this music journey! For me the journey can be stressful, when you ain’t seeing the results come through for your hard work can be the downside of things, but I‘ve been positive and just enjoying being creative and making music people love. Looking forward, what can fans expect from your future projects, and how do you envision your artistic evolution in the future? Fans can expect a wide range of music! Many of my music in the vault doesn’t sound the same; it will always sound different from the next. Being versatile is good as an artist, I have more singles coming out this year and eventually working on an EP! I took a break last year to build my catalog and work hard on my sound, so I am ready for the fans to hear my music for 2024! My artistic revolution is to continue creating different music and different sounds, being open to trying new things and staying positive on this journey.
