Feaster Shot Their "Surprise" Video In A Bushwick Room In One Take

Feaster released their debut album Big Super earlier this month, and this week they're sharing a video for its opener, "Surprise."

The Pennsylvania band came out of Snacks Chapman, the earlier project of Jared Rodriguez and Ian Lozinski. Chris Hranj (Save Face) and Andreas Constantinou (Zaku, Mountain Chiefs, Dead World) rounded out the lineup, and the Pearly Gates EP followed in 2024. Big Super was written during a bad stretch — Rodriguez went through a breakup, Lozinski was out of work, and Rodriguez eventually moved in with his bandmate. Sharing an apartment meant nobody had to force anything, and the record wanders accordingly, pushing the band's rock instincts into wirier, psych-adjacent territory.

"Surprise" plays like a standoff between a captor and a prisoner working out an escape. "Lift this rag 'round my temple/ I wanna let in the light/ Made a stand for my people," Rodriguez sings. The guitars are loud and unfriendly, the drums are pushed way up in the mix, and the whole thing sounds like a basement show that got recorded properly.

Director Connor Meany, who also did the band's "Eyes Wide" video, saw Feaster play in Jersey City and pitched a single continuous take with nothing in it but the performance. In June, on a brutally hot night, the band carried their gear up to a white room on the fourth floor of a Bushwick building and played the song while Meany worked through a choreographed run of pans and zooms. There's no narrative layered on top — the tension in the lyrics is the whole idea.
