Natalie Nichole Shows Her Mastery Of R&B On Her New Album, 'Evolve'

Love might be tough, but what's to lose when the music’s so good?

Born in Lubbock, Texas, but raised in San Antonio, multi-talented singer/songwriter and performer extraordinaire Natalie Nichole has risen to the top through hard work, unwavering dedication, and love for what she does.

Having performed in dancing groups, talent shows, and even TV shows from an early age, her love affair with the music industry was a story that practically wrote itself. Despite some ups and downs (including facing homelessness for nearly a year in LA), her determination never wavered, and her resilience in the face of diversity is a rare trait that has not only shone through in her music but has also come to define her powerful artistic identity.

Nichole would take the first bold steps towards a music career when she graduated from high school and decided to relocate to California. Her immersion in the rich music scene there paid dividends, rubbing shoulders and collaborating with industry giants like Smitty Soul, Ron Aniello, and Rita Wilson.

An even greater breakthrough awaited her, though, as one fateful day, she would win popular hip-hop personality Nick Cannon’s IG Challenge, propelling her to even greater stardom and projects like “Calling All Models (The Prequel) and “The Fuck Him Trilogy.” Still a musician at heart, she’s since built her legacy in captivating storytelling and personal testimony.

In many ways, Nichol’s latest album 'Evolve,' feels like a masterclass in R&B. Nichole impressively manages to hit the sweet spot between classic and contemporary R&B, generously drawing from both styles without letting one overpower the other. The album begins with “Up Last Night,” a sensual and exciting segue into 'Evolve’s' emotional intricacies.

As quickly as “Up Last Night” sets the tone for your listening experience, the subsequent release “Questions” entirely eases you into the glossy, multi-layered affair 'Evolve' impressively manages to be. Nichole is clearly in her element, weaving through different perspectives of love, relationships, and heartbreak with the poise of a pro.

On releases like “Answers” and “Petty Niggas”, Nichole expertly channels the emotions of a woman scorned, dropping lines like “Say they want to be a part of your life / But they don’t even treat you right” and “I thought you were different, ooh I need some therapy.” Love can be unglamorous and ugly, and Nichole is not afraid to show that. That isn’t to say that 'Evolve' is all doom and gloom, though, in fact, far from it.

Lines like “I know it hurts, cuz I ain’t put you first” on “Frontin” show that Nichole knows how to put herself first, even if it may sound cold, and lyrics like “Say my name so softly, say my name so sweet” and “We been lifted cuz the love we got is transcendent” show that with the right person, love is undoubtedly something to cherish and enjoy. Though 'Evolve' has its fair amount of features, Nichole can shine equally well solo or with a companion, showing a remarkable versatility that shows Nichole’s mastery of the genre.

On standouts like “Spacey” and “Call on Me,” Nichole exhibits flawless chemistry with her guests, exhibiting a knack for coming in at just the right time with a chorus or verse. In many ways, “Evolve” is a testament to Nichole’s outstanding vocal ability and skill as a well-rounded artist; as long as it hints at R&B, Natalie Nichole can turn it into a banger.

By the time “Evolve” closes with Nichole’s beautiful R&B rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s timeless classic “Time After Time,” Nichole’s musical genius is so impressive it feels like there’s only one thing to do: run it back.

Natalie Nichol’s 'Evolve' is an immersive offering of the quintessential R&B experience done right. Whenever you’re ready, tap in and stream Natalie Nichole’s “Evolve,” available now on all majour streaming platforms.

We loved your new album, 'Evolve.' You have such an excellent grasp of the entire R&B genre! What was your vision when you were first inspired to make this release? Did it end up different from what you first thought it would be?

'Evolve' is more than just an album for me; it's a journey through my past, present, and future self. Each version of me has played a crucial role in my ultimate evolution as an artist and human being. I aim to vividly capture my thoughts, experiences, feelings, and emotions with every song. I've always believed in creating from an authentic and raw space, even if it means embracing imperfections. The emotions I convey are undeniably human and instinctual. I hope those who listen can relate to and appreciate the essence of my soul in each track. In July 2022, I decided to take a break from music. It was meant to be a longer hiatus, but I took 3-4 months off.

After years of hard work, I felt like I had hit a wall. I had the opportunity to write for another indie artist, but unfortunately, it didn't materialize. Instead, those songs became the foundation for a 20-song album I titled "EVOLVE." I quit a job I had for six months in December 2022, hoping to find one with a schedule that would better accommodate my music career as I worked on this new album. Then, on January 1st, 2023, DJ Calvin was gearing up for a Texas Takeover Tour, and I knew I wanted to be part of it. Despite having just started a new job, I raised money for two months and quit to join the tour. However, life had other plans, and my dad was hospitalized shortly after. Amid these challenges and preparing for the tour, I unexpectedly found renewed inspiration. I collaborated with DJ Calvin on a mixtape featuring "Come Over."

Tragically, my dad passed away just four days before the tour, making it an emotionally challenging time. Despite the hardships, the tour opened doors for me, leading to the West Coast Takeover Tour in July 2023 after releasing another song, "Shawty," on a DJ Calvin mixtape. After the tour, I embarked on a "Petty Campaign" in August and began working on new music. As I enter the 4th Quarter of this year, I'm preparing for another DJ Calvin Tour starting in late September in NYC.

Throughout this journey, I've had to balance a new job that aligns better with my music career while saving and fundraising for music, touring, and my personal aspirations. I don't have a large team supporting me; I have a few dedicated individuals who believe in me and pop in and out of my life as I continue to work toward my dreams. I take pride in writing and arranging all my music, collaborating with a select group of producers who share my vision. I also handle all aspects of planning my rollouts and marketing, often paying for everything out of pocket or through fundraisers and merchandise sales.

From designing my flyers to conceptualizing album covers and merch ideas, I'm deeply involved in the creative process. I even try to film my own music videos, although I occasionally take a chance to work with others. This journey has been a testament to my resilience, determination, and passion for my craft. I wanted to document it because I know that one day, people will want to know the stories behind the music, and I want to ensure that the truth and my reality are told. It's a journey of growth, creativity, and unwavering commitment to my art.

We know it's tough (so many good songs are on the album!), but what is your favorite song on "Evolve" and why?

Choosing a favorite song from my album, "Evolve," is no easy task, as each track holds a special place in my heart for its own reasons. However, if I were to pick, "Thinkin Bout You" and "Ain't Me" stand out as two of my favorites. These songs have journeyed with me for several years, nearly a decade, or even more. Each time I attempted to release them, I found myself amid significant life transitions that have delayed their manifestation.

"Ain't Me" is not just an interlude to "Thinkin Bout You"; it carries a unique treasure. It references a song titled "She Can't," which I released on my second album when I was fifteen. This connection encapsulates my growth as a creative within the record itself.

"Thinkin Bout You" holds a special place in my heart because it was written "in a mansion in the hills" during a time when I was being discovered by Nick Cannon, a period when I was emerging from homelessness in L.A. Yet, even now as I finally had the opportunity to release this record, I was dealing with the passing of my father, which added another layer of profound change to my life.

These songs are not just musical creations but chapters of my life's story. As you listen to them, you can feel the depth of emotion and growth they represent.

What was your favorite part about bringing the vision for 'Evolve' to life?

My favorite part about bringing the vision for 'Evolve' to life was that it was genuinely unexpected. I had been contemplating taking a break from music, but it became evident that God had other plans for me. I can't imagine not moving forward with this divine nudge to complete a 20-song album. There's no turning back now, and I'm excited to see where this path leads.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it before?

To anyone that hasn't heard my music before. My music perfectly encapsulates all I am, conveyed through melody and storytelling. When I create music, I give you my heart; with each note and lyric, you hear my life unfold. I simply can't envision sharing my soul in any other way; it wouldn't be authentic. This is the true essence of my music.

What's next for Natalie Nichole? Do you have anything you want to say to your supporters?

The future holds boundless opportunities, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the path ahead. Touring with DJ Calvin and promoting my album, including the single "Petty N*ggas," fills me with excitement. I can't wait to dive into interviews, music videos, and new ventures are on the horizon. Being partnered with innovative platforms like Vida makes me proud, and I'm committed to growing my supportive community by embracing my true, authentic self.

To all of you in #DoveNation, I want to express my sincere gratitude for flying by my side; your support means everything to me. I'd like to extend a special thank you to those who've embraced my limited edition Merch on NatalieNichole.com, and I encourage you to listen to the album in its entirety. Collaborating with artists I admired, such as Lil' Flip, AJ Hernz, Mark Battles, and more, has been a privilege. This album truly reflects evolution at its finest, and I can't wait for you to experience it.
