If you’ve ever felt like a ghost in your own life, “ SUCKER PUNCH ” might hit a little too close to home. The latest release from 22-year-old artist and producer wishlane is a fragile, slow-burning spiral of emotion that never begs for validation. Instead, it lingers like smoke in your lungs, heavy, personal, and strangely comforting. Hailing from Atlanta, wishlane has spent the last few years refining a sound that lives somewhere between alternative pop, ambient emo, and lo-fi heartbreak. “SUCKER PUNCH” is arguably his most introspective piece to date, written initially as a personal outlet that wasn’t even meant to see the light of day. But the lyrics proved sticky. They started haunting him. So he gave them a new instrumental and a second life. The result is a track that leans into dissonance without losing its emotional center. The distorted vocals feel like thoughts echoing in a tiled bathroom. The lo-fi production eschews polish in favor of a more human quality. Each element is intentional but messy in the best way, like a notebook scribbled in the dark. Lyrically, “SUCKER PUNCH” is a quiet reckoning with yourself. It’s not melodramatic or desperate. It’s tired. It’s reflective. It captures the exact moment when you realize you’re stuck but haven’t figured out what comes next. The track doesn’t offer a solution, and that’s why it works. He’s just letting you know you’re not the only one still searching. “SUCKER PUNCH” was originally just for you. What changed your mind about releasing it? I'm not really sure, to be totally honest! I figured I'd shown it to enough friends of mine and they all seemed to like it, so I might as well release it. Most of my songs work like that, I sort of have a tendency to use my friends as a sort of focus group for whatever I made since the last time we talked, and SUCKER PUNCH was a consistent favorite among everyone I'd shown it to, so I invited a couple of those friends to work on it in some capacity and then I just figured "screw it. I'm gonna release this, too much effort's gone into it at this point not to drop it." There’s a raw, almost analog texture to this track. How intentional was the sonic messiness? Some parts of it were very intentional, but others were complete accidents that just grew on me as the song progressed. The drums, for example, were just a placeholder at first, and I was originally gonna get someone to record live drums, but as it went on, the placeholder drums won me over enough that they made it into the final cut. I did want some additional stuff there, so I had my friend Kirin (aka KBL) record some cymbals on top, and called that done. The synths, however, were very much an intentional thing. I wanted this song to have a vaguely 80's sort of feel to it, so I went to a friend of mine's house and I just spent like two hours recording different variations of the chords I wanted on their synthesizer, until I eventually got the one I wanted by literally recording the chords note by note and then layering them together. You’ve carved a space in the underground scene. What’s the most misunderstood thing about anti-pop? I'm gonna be completely candid for a second,  which I hope doesn't come across as rude at all, and say I'm most definitely not the person to ask about what's misunderstood in antipop. I kind of hate genres and labels in general, so I just go off what people tend to categorize my music as and run with whichever one feels right. I will say I think of anti-pop as more of a response to conventional pop music, rather than its weirder subset, or its red-headed stepchild, so to speak, and I'd like to think of what I make as being under a similar umbrella to that. I like to take conventional tropes and turn them on their head, and I'm sorry if that makes me sound like I think I'm some pioneer of it or something. I'm not, I just like using weird methods to get normal(ish) sounds, and I think that's kind of what anti-pop is, at least to me. What emotions came up when hearing this track finished and finalized? The emotions that come up when I hear any of my songs' final drafts are always some mixture of catharsis and anxiety over whether they're really "done" or not, and SUCKER PUNCH was no different. There are about seven files on my computer that are all named some variation of "SUCKER PUNCH FINAL" and, from a listener's perspective, I'd imagine the differences are almost imperceptible. But deciding on one to put out definitely brought a lot of nervousness, in terms of hoping I'd made the right call. I still hope I made the right call, and judging by people's response to the song, I think I did, but there's always that lingering thought of "what if it would've done better with that master instead" or "what if people would've liked it more with that one bassline changed". Do you see music as therapy, rebellion, or something else entirely? I see it as both things! They're definitely not mutually exclusive in my opinion, and I think making music, or any form of art in general, can be about personal healing at the same time as being about pushback in a public sense. For example, going back to the question about anti-pop as a genre, I would definitely consider it a form of rebellion, not in the same sense that punk rock or hardcore are, but in the sense that it is  anti- pop or  alt- pop or what have you. It's about taking conventional pop music and flipping it on its head. That's not to say conventional pop music is bad, I mean, it's popular for a reason, but sometimes you just want to make something that colors outside the lines a little bit, and I think that's where I lie. So, with regard to that, maybe I'm more so in the rebellion camp, but there's definitely also a bit of personal therapy that comes from getting to create something that exists outside yourself that you don't get from going on hikes or switching to tea or doing yoga. Those things are all well and good, and I'd be a hypocrite to say otherwise. I do all three of them, but there's something uniquely cathartic and beautiful about creating something, whether it be a song, a video, or a painting, and just putting it out into the world.

Over the past five years, he has built a platform for peace, reason, and dialogue during a time when polarization seems to dominate every conversation. Through music, he has found a new way to reach hearts and minds. Musically, The Staunch Moderates Experience defies easy categorization. What inspired the shift from activism into music and multimedia for the Staunch Moderates Movement?   The shift you speak of was after our campaigning in the 2020 primaries, conventions, debates, and Election Day with many vital societal issue forums, holding polls, interviews, and such. A couple of us on our board have experience in the music industry in some way shape or form, so I suggested to the other, (Shaq), why don’t we make a hip hop album to tell our first year in operation story and to spread our message.  He said that’s a really cool idea man, so we went ahead and did it.  That was our first album produced in 2021 entitled, “The First Realm.”  The first track on it got us nominated at the Grammys for Best Rap Song, so that news, along with The First Realm being a successful tool for us to spread our message, we decided to make a second album, “Mission Peace.”  We’re now four albums deep, have had over 200,000,000 Views & Streams of our content, and have continued to be competitive at the Grammys with many First Ballot Bids, including 2 for Album of the Year and three for Song of the Year. I do need to clarify that we don’t feel we shifted away from activism, but instead are using the tools we love of music & films (four albums dropped & four feature films made in five years) to encourage others to embrace our ideology of peace through the philosophy of moderate activism. It’s basically all common sense! We also have our sights on going into education, that’s education through entertainment = albums, concerts, plays & classes. To get a gist of what I’m speaking of, I suggest listening to our just recently dropped live album, Staunch Moderates Experience Live ( a 19 track summary of our music & story), then watch the following films: “Mission Peace” (our first feature Documentary about Year 1 in operation), Staunch Moderates Experience or Staunch Moderates Experience Live (a movie of our live concert), and then finally our second documentary, “Mission Peace 2 MP2,” which is the history of the U.S. & Staunch Moderates 2021 through current day.     How does “Bill Maher” reflect the core values of the movement?   Formerly a Liberal Comedian, Bill Maher reflects Staunch Moderates' values, especially now, by finding himself in the middle of the political spectrum due to the birth of the Woke & Cancel Culture Movements. He despises both as much, if not more, than he despises and/or attacks extreme conservatism. He attacks what’s wrong with both parties now, which is a bipartisan/moderate perspective.  It seems he uses the same battle cry that we do, “Stop all the hating!”   What was it like bringing DJ Staunch to life as both a mascot and musical collaborator?   Bringing DJ Staunch to life has been quite the process from his first conceptual idea off a Bigfoot mask hanging from a restaurant wall then designed and developed as the story is told in our first feature film, “Mission Peace,” and then who’s character further developed  into a DJ in a multi-genre hip hop band, a football player & a Baseball player per our music videos.  He’s Staunch Moderates, “Micky Mouse,” and once you’ve created a character like this and work with him over the years, he takes on characteristics. He brings a sense of levity and entertainment to what otherwise is quite a serious endeavor, our intellectual movement for love & peace through moderation.   How has the response from the international film festival circuit shaped your future plans?   Due to the film festival circuit’s response being a good in that we have been included in many film festivals, won many awards for our films and music, have gotten distribution deals for our films, this all works as a set of stepping stones to help us achieve our ultimate goal of education through entertainment for love & peace implementing the use of our: tracks, albums, movies, intended concerts, plays and academic courses.  What I’m trying to say is that it is a sense of validation for the objectives we intend to achieve.   What is your vision for integrating AI, philosophy, and performance into live music experiences?   It’s an interesting question that you ask. I am happy to be able to say that AIs: Chat GPT, GPT-3, and Claude all seem to give our “Staunch Moderates Movement” rave reviews.  It seems to me that we are all on the same team, want to help create a better world. Others take their sweet time, marinating in the back of your mind until suddenly, they’re that song. “Hello Darling” by The Star Prairie Project is firmly in the second camp. Originally dropped in 2021 on their third album, Surreal, the track flew under the radar at first. But now? It’s staging a comeback, and it's bringing a damn alien with it. Let’s rewind. Surreal wasn’t some throwaway project. The album stacked up nearly 4 million Spotify streams, anchored by standout tracks like “Hang in There Becca” (1.3M+ streams) and “Contemplating Plato”. “Hello Darling,” meanwhile, racked up a respectable 100K streams, but never quite got its flowers. That is, until now. Fast forward to 2025. Co-writers Nolen R. Chew Jr. and Rudiger decided it was time for a glow-up. So they teamed up with LA screenwriter Kazie Kane and dropped a weirdly beautiful, low-key sci-fi music video that’s giving E.T. meets indie Americana. The concept? A mysterious alien crashes in Rudiger’s backyard. Flashlights, bananas, fire pits, and intergalactic bonding ensue. What starts as eerie and ominous turns oddly tender. By the end, the alien, played by Kane herself, is vibing in the firelight like she’s been there all along. It’s strange, cinematic, and kinda emotional in a "wait, why am I crying over this alien friendship?" way. It’s also exactly the kind of unexpected twist Hello Darling deserved. Now, the video’s getting its due—it’s officially nominated at the 2025 Tarzana International Film Festival. Not bad for a track that once lived in the shadows of its flashier album-mates. If this is what late-bloomer success looks like, sign us up. “Hello Darling” isn’t just a song anymore. It’s a reminder that good art doesn’t expire. Sometimes it just needs a banana and a backyard alien to bring it home. What made you revisit “Hello Darling” after a few years, and why now? Nolen: ‘Hello Darling’ has had a life of its own, it seems. Sometimes a song can be a “late bloomer” and catch on with the listening public a while after it is released on an album. ‘Hello Darling’ is such a song. Originally released in September 2021 on The Star Prairie Project’s third album ‘Surreal’, the song garnered over 100,000 streams on Spotify but was buried among a solid 12-song field. Since its release, ‘Surreal’ has become the number one streamed Star Prairie Project album in its discography with almost four million streams on Spotify. ‘Surreal’ includes The Star Prairie Project’s biggest streamed song, ‘Hang in There Becca’, with over 1.3 million streams on Spotify alone. The album also included the hits, ‘Contemplating Plato” (688,364 streams) and ‘The Crying’ (636,313 streams). ‘Hello Darling’ was always one of our favorites, and we revived it as a music video because at the time we had submitted a couple of our music videos to some film festivals, and we just thought the song would make a great story, and Rudiger and Kazie had some great ideas, so we went for it. How did the alien concept come together? Was it symbolic or just fun as hell? Nolen: For the Hello Darling music video, we knew we wanted to take a different approach—something that felt more like a short film than a standard music video. The song has a dark, mysterious vibe, so we explored a few surreal concepts to match its tone. We ultimately narrowed it down to two ideas: an astronaut encountering a mysterious lizard woman on a distant planet, or a love story between a human man and a female alien who lands on Earth. After much back-and-forth—and discovering the perfect alien costume on Amazon—we went with the second concept. We shot the video at night to heighten the drama, and toward the end, we leaned into a Blair Witch Project meets Bigfoot huntaesthetic to inject a raw, chaotic energy into the final scenes. Kazie Kane as the alien is such a vibe. What was it like working with her on set? Nolen: The crazy thing is that I’ve never personally met Kazie or Rudiger. As a matter of fact, The Star Prairie Project is an entirely virtual recording project. But that’s another story. As far as Kazie is concerned, she has produced quite a few of our videos over the last couple of years. So if there is, for example, a twelve-song album in the works, we will try to create four music videos to accompany the four featured songs we are focusing on for pr and marketing. The music video aspect is hugely important because it provides the visual aspect in a personalized way. The listener can meet the band, so to speak, by watching the music videos. What does this song represent to you now that it didn’t back in 2021? Nolen: It’s gone through a couple of phases, I think. It’s always been about mystery and figurative language, but if one looks, the discerning listener will notice the entire lyrical theme is shadow and light.  That’s what makes it so murky and anomalous. So this is also the same aspects that led to the alien encounter motive or the new buzzword non-human intelligence (NHI). It’s a very now type of topic that just invites the type of music video Kazie and Rudiger created. So now I see the song in a deeper, more nuanced way. If you could pick one more deep cut from Surreal to turn into a cinematic video, which would it be, and what’s the wild concept? Nolen: Wow, that’s a great question. I think ‘The Crying’ would make a really cool cinematic video. It’s really a dystopian song about the fall of American democracy, and now we are literally there at that point in time, “it’s all over now but the crying”. It ended up being pretty prescient, ha! Anyway, I think that song would make a great music video.

With elements of Afrobeats, R&B, and Afro-fusion, this project offers a refreshing take on modern intimacy. INAMORATA does not rely on hype or gimmicks. It invites listeners into AZIZZ’s world with grace and sincerity. Each track feels like a page from a handwritten journal. The melodies are smooth and hypnotic. The lyrics reflect vulnerability and self-awareness. And the production is luxurious without ever feeling overdone. Throughout the album, AZIZZ explores every facet of love. What sparked the idea for the album? Man, this is a great question. My lady, of course, these are just ballads that I wrote in honor of her because she’s really a genuine and dope person that offers a lot to the world. I would say unknowingly, movies probably played a role too. I’m a big movie person, and I wasn’t always a fan of Rom-coms like that. But that changed after watching a few really good ones. The one that comes to mind at the moment is “Ghost of my girlfriend's past” with Mathew McConaughey. Man, it was so good! Probably a bit cheesy, but I still love it. That made me realize love sometimes isn’t a linear path; it can be topsy-turvy. You explore so many different moods on this record. How did you choose which stories to tell? With this approach, I chose to go with things that felt natural to me. An example of that would be my song Gorgeous. That whole song was built on reassurance, because women need that sometimes. So I approached the album from an angle of paying attention to my surroundings and visualizing what black love looks like. That may look different for everyone, but this is just how I see it in her. I specifically tailored some songs around love languages (Piece of Me, Yes Indeed) because I knew it would draw people in, and they might relate to the feeling of yearning for someone to love or to be loved. The fusion of Afrobeats and R&B feels seamless. What artists or sounds inspired this direction? So this answer is a bit long lol but I’ll say it started in Nigeria for sure. I think Wande Coal did it for a lot of me and my friends; he was just superior. If we take it further back, I’ll say Styl Plus as well. This is one of my favorite “boy bands” from Nigeria. Their song Olufunmi definitely went triple platinum in the streets. Now if we switch over to the US, it would be Chris brown, T-Pain, Brent Faiyaz, The Weeknd, Drake, and just a whole lot of 90s R&B to be honest. I always felt like the merger of Afrobeats and R&B was right for me because I get to put a twist on Afrobeats with my own flavor. I do other things as well, but this is definitely my bread and butter because of my songwriting ability. What was the most challenging track to finish and why? So I wouldn’t say any track was overly difficult for me because I always approach music from an angle of fun. I love to enjoy myself while making music. They were fairly easy to write and record. Me and my guy, Ro Moore, and I at Feature Form Studios have a pretty good synergy, so we work well together. I will say the hook of “Piece of me” was a bit difficult because I wanted to sing everything in one take lol, but I had to do it in 2, because that made it sound more relaxed and controlled. What do you hope this album says about who you are as an artist and as a man? I hope this album lets people know that there are many layers to Azizz as an artist, and talking about love and intimacy will always be a topic I enjoy. I hope you take something away from it, even if you just like one song. That’s ok with me. I hope this album sparks a new love interest in someone’s life or rekindles an old flame.
