- LOVESICK Covers Future Islands’ “Beach Foam”
The notorious romantic rock group, LOVESICK, has revived a late 2000s classic with a beautiful rendition of Future Islands' "Beach Foam." LOVESICK is a creative collaboration between Heather Joy Morgan, a painter and chanteuse, and the notorious cutting-edge trio, The Elevator Drops. With Adam Wade of the Funeral Party band, they bring an overdose of inventive love songs exploring the splendor and madness of affection. Having numerous artistic talents and elements together gives LOVESICK their eclectic versatility sonically. The power unit released a touching "Beach Foam" cover on June 12, 2023, accompanied by a hazy, dreamy video. Future Islands is a fan-adored synth-pop indie band that has been around since their debut album, "Wave Like Home," in 2008. They're known for combining the romanticism of the new wave with the power and drive of post-punk. LOVESICK found a way to bring this song back to life in a classic yet rejuvenating way. Slightly slowing down the original record's BPM while making it feel more upbeat brought their style to the essence of "Beach Foam." It could be the more prominent drum style, or it could replace the smooth synths with strummy classic 80s-esque guitars that add movement. Whatever it is, it works, and LOVESICK did this song justice, which is challenging to pull off on a monumental song from such a timeless indie album as "Wave Like Home." The creative video accompanying the ethereal cover song follows the story of a mermaid being saved after washing up on the beach shore. She then spends the rest of the video in a bathtub, as colors flood the screen and the romantic relationship between her and the protagonist in the story flourishes. Overall, it is a touching experience. LOVESICK deserves to be applauded for their rendition of a record that would be hard to reproduce creatively, yet they had no trouble doing it. Take in the video, "Beach Foam - Future Islands (ELECTRIC VERSION)," from the album LOVESICK VS Terry Palmer, and be seduced by the enchanted melodic journey. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Lovesick." Your impressive cover of a cult classic, "Beach Foam," is noteworthy. Have you performed this record before as a group, or was this the first time you came together to revamp it? (Goolkasian) A Million Years ago, on the first Elevator Drops tour, these three shy kids wandered backstage and introduced themselves to us as Art Lord & the Self Portraits. About three centuries later, I released the first Texas Governor CD and got a check for a Record and a self-made CD titled Art Lord & the Self Portraits (hand drawn in Permanent Marker). It was very lo-fi, but I loved the gravely, heartfelt vocals, and the fun simplicity of the band shone through. My favorite song was, of course, Beach Foam. We soon booked a small tour together, and on the night of the first show, they announced that they were changing their name to The Future Islands. The whole tour was a blur - I was delighted about Cherry Robitussin. I had enough energy each day to go wild for our 45-minute set; then, I would collapse in a shivering pile backstage, drinking Robitussin like a delicious comfort kool-aide. I kept thinking I would get better the next day, but it got worse and worse. One night after a show in Asheville, Sam (future Islands) came out and started freestyle rapping, and he was amazing - I was so messed up on cough medicine that I was sure I had hallucinated this, but later, I found out it was real. At some point, my Girlfriend and the bands intervened, all sort of tricked me into going to the ER. I had severely advanced Walking Pneumonia. I forgot your question, I guess, hahaha! Anyhow I Love these guys, and I've always loved Beach Foam. Terry Palmer decided to record a cover version of it. I was at first like, "NO WAY, MAN," You can't cover such a classic song, but he persisted, changing the key, speeding it up, slowing it down, adding louder guitars, and eventually, it achieved the sort of dream pop style it is now. What inspired LOVESICK to cover "Beach Foam" in the 80-s cure-esque style? (TERRY PALMER) Playing the synth parts on guitar was an obvious way to set it apart from the original, so it evolved truer to our actual musical style. It is mostly an attempt to stay respectful of the song because it is already great, but hopefully, it shows it from a different perspective. (Goolkasian) The hardest part for me was finding a way to convey the intense emotion of the lyrics in my style, which, after much struggle, I will be bold enough to say I think I feel great about. Sam's vocal performance on the original track is masterful. How did the video idea come about, with the touching story of saving a mermaid? (Heather Joy Morgan) The mermaid story/concept was an allegory of longing to tame this wild creature and get this NYC artist girlfriend (Heather) to move to NH to be with the lonely boy wandering the seacoast in search of love. We started recording it, and it was so much fun - we recorded most of it in our house but shot the final scenes on a beach in Malibu. It was super cold. Who are the main influences of the different members of LOVESICK that bring this vintage/modern pop-rock sound to life? Terry is a lunatic. You can ask him what bands he likes or about other projects he's worked on, as he is a talented engineer who HAS produced or engineered on some well-known projects, but he will sort of just mumble incoherently, then drift off and begin telling absurd jokes. Heather loves classic alternative, 70s underground, gothic music, 60s girl group, Bowie, and all things poetic and melodramatic. (Goolkaisan) I LOVE everything. Except I hate Modern Country Music and Jazz, that's too freeform. I hate that overly emotional semi-acoustic fake music they play at restaurants now. Oh, wait, I also hate auto-tuned talk rap. Oh, I hate that song that sounds a lot like Bye Bye, Miss American Pie - no idea who it is, but he should get a cease and desist order from Don McClain (I think that's who wrote that song.) I loved that song as a kid, but it's terrible. I hate that too. Also, our LIVE band has Adam Wade from Funeral Party, who loves LOUD GUITAR DRIVEN bands like GANG GREEN and the Cocteau Twins. (LOL) and Palana (PALANA VS THE MAN) on drums. She pretty much just listens to Taylor Swift. Like 24/7. On repeat. What else must we look forward to coming from LOVESICK this year? Surprise! We also have a beautiful stripped-down Acoustic sort of Texas Governor-style version of Beach Foam as well from Nick Phaneuf (Texas Governor, Dan Blakslees Calabash Band, Soggy Po Boys, 5-8-13, ... on and on). Nick is a musical ...; what's the polite word for a musician who gets around? There's a great alternate Mermaid Video to go with it as well.
- Logan Avidan Wants You To Be Your Best Self On "Left My Heart"
The Nyc-based artist wants you to live in the moment for a little while enjoying life. Some people thrive in the expansive realms of art, music, and self-expression. For singer-songwriter Logan Avidan, although she’s already made a successful career in front of the camera, she’s shown just as much talent in the studio. Although the harsh reality of the camera and its ability to capture nuance and blemish might be unnerving to most, Avidan has instead impressively converted it into a portal for self-discovery, which further fuels her artistic genius. With her debut solo album, “Hot and Bothered,” on the horizon, she’s been blazing her trail in the music scene with great vibes and even greater sounds. Avidan’s musical influences are as diverse as they are daring. Drawing inspiration from Courtney Love, Mazzy Star, Lana Del Rey, SZA, and Fiona Apple, she’s woven a rich musical tapestry that infuses meaning and emotion into every line. Although she pays homage to her eclectic influences, she’s definitely managed to make her sound her own, which is the product of her rare artistic ability and vision. A true artist to the core, although Avidan’s trained eye can instantly identify what will work, she also possesses the rare boldness to try what may not as well. By walking the line between the two, she’s pushed her artistic limits into the stratosphere, and we can’t wait to see how far her music can go. The inspiration for Avidan’s latest single, “Left My Heart,” actually came to her in the middle of a flight. Upon landing, she shared it with co-writer and producer John Eatherly, who swiftly conjured a captivating chord progression on his guitar. Together, they turned Avidan’s inspiration into reality. Over dreamy instrumentals that instantly transport you to a dream state, Avidan’s vocals can only be described as hypnotizing. Dropping lyrics like “I left my heart by the river / It wasn’t the cold / That made me shiver” and “To make a dream reality is a dream,” Avidan quickly sweeps you up in her soundscape, making for an unforgettable listening experience. “Left My Heart” is more than a song—it’s a manifesto through which Avidan implores listeners to cast aside their self-imposed limits and embrace the unknown. It’s a call to take risks, abandon comfort zones, and unlock the freedom from pursuing all possibilities. In a world fixated on the “right” timing and the “right” way, Avidan urges us to shed these concerns and dive headfirst into our dreams. Whenever you’re ready, tap in and stream Logan Avidan’s release, “Left My Heart,” out July 14th. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Logan Avidan! We love "Left My Heart," what an enchanting and dreamy release! What has been your favorite part of seeing your vision for this song and music video come to life? Thank you! My favorite part was getting together with Cait Durra (the music video director) and picking the different characters for the video. I went to a store in the city called "Screaming Mimis Vintage" to shop for all the looks. I had such a blast playing dress-up and finding myself in each character. As someone who has already found success in other forms of the arts, what do you think was the most challenging part of the transition to music? There has always been an overlap, but finding like-minded people to work with and grow with was the most challenging part. Luckily, over time, I have connected with great, talented people who share my passion for life. We know this is your musical debut, but what's been the most exciting part of your journey in music so far? The most exciting part for me was that moment in the recording process when I first realized what the song was blossoming into. Sometimes it sounds just like what I heard when I started writing it, and other times it surprises me and takes me on a journey to unexpected places. We look forward to hearing more from your upcoming album, Hot and Bothered! Please tell us a little about it and when we can expect it to drop. Hot and Bothered will be dropping in 2024. The album is heavily inspired by the culture I loved as a kid. I remember watching these teen movies that sparked an excitement for life. There was this fantasy of what it meant to grow up: Boys, cars, music. Looking back, I know that life isn't necessarily like the movies, but tapping into that youthful energy has made the process so much more fun. Can you share some goals you'd like to achieve with your music over the next few years? My goal is for my music to be an instrument for learning and teaching. I also want to inspire that same feeling I had as a teenager, singing into my hairbrush in my bedroom. Who would you say is your target audience? Who are you hoping to reach most of all if you had to pick, generally speaking? In addition to us, of course! Anybody must be reminded that it's okay to feel everything you need while growing. Everybody messes up, and it's okay to own that and laugh at yourself sometimes. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! We're definitely going to be keeping our eyes on what you put out next! Anything else you want to say to your new fans? Be silly, have fun, make mistakes, and be easy on yourself! Xoxo Instagram TikTok
- Aaron Marlowe Salutes 80s Rock & Classic Country With “Heroes”
Recently breaking into the Nashville music scene, Aaron Marlowe brought another single to his arsenal. Released on June 23, 2023, “Heroes” demonstrates the dynamic fashion in which Aaron blends country and rock in addition to his prolific writing. Using his genre-blending fusion, he attaches a profound message well worth absorbing. The release includes a music video with the opening lyrics, “Teenage girl of only sixteen/Looks at all her old memories/Thinks all she has seen/Are promises broken,” revealing a young woman sitting on a couch, holding back tears. He utilizes a black-and-white filter to demonstrate how color can be stripped from our world when promises are broken and hope is diminished. He tells the story of a woman who has experienced broken promises and the struggle of being let down while hoping to trust others again. The video switches back and forth from his narration as he sings and plays guitar with his cool black and white shades and the young woman sulking on the sofa. The emphasis of the perfectly cheesy yet emotional video makes the 80s feel of the record complete. It reminds us of the classic rock videos we all miss that have faded from the mainstream. Aaron Marlowe’s weapon of choice is the guitar and for good reason. He has been playing for over 25 years, and it shows. From catchy rhythm riffs to the soaring 80’s-esque guitar solo, Aaron uses his abilities to enhance an already well-written record. Aaron truly fits the “singer-songwriter” mold with a heavy lean towards his love of classic rock and country music. If you dive into his discography, you’ll find him hitting different areas of these two genres with fantastic accuracy. Tap into Aaron Marlowe’s latest single and music video, “Heroes,” and take a trip back to the 80s. Instagram Facebook

In Miles Jenson's recent interview with BuzzMusic, and was asked how the Nashville music scene differed from the Los Angeles scene. "...Nashville is narrative, conversational and often heartwrenching..." in Los Angeles, he found many similarities between it and Atlanta, as artists go there to 'make it' and are often keen to collaborate. We asked Miles about his creative process behind "Rose Colored Glasses," and he stated, "..it just flowed out of me, and that doesn't happen all the time...". He mentioned that after playing verses chords, it took him to a place where people romanticize their pain to lessen the severity of it. What an uplifting and powerful track! We had to ask, what was the inspiration behind this track? What was the message you were trying to send? The inspiration behind this track was to remind people that everyone is beautiful in one way or another. This was not only a reminder or an eye-opener for others but for me because that is something I continue to forget even now. However, it is essential to remember that everyone has beauty because it can help us learn and grow into who we are meant to be. I don't just mean outward beauty but the more important kind, which is inner beauty. Our inner beauty can help us find our purpose and can help us bring out the beauty in ourselves and others. What's your creative process usually like? Could you take us through the creative process for "Beautiful?" My creative process typically starts with my producers asking me what I want to sing about and what's important to me. Then, a beat is created, and lyrics on top convey the original message idea. Sometimes the message is also molded and changed throughout the creation of a song. For "Beautiful" started, as many of my songs do, with a simple question. What do I want to sing about? The song Beautiful is kind of the song that started and shaped my whole message. What inspired you to start learning music in the first place, and what's your favorite part of being an artist? When I was little, I remember all of my favorite movies and tv shows having songs in them. From what I remember, I loved singing along and dancing. I remember always being drawn to music. Then, in fourth grade, when I was nine years old, I joined the choir called 'Promises' at my school and have been singing ever since then. That is when I truly found my love for music, and it has only grown since then. My favorite part of being an artist is getting to sing, and it gives me the ability to spread my message with something I know how to use, my voice. What do you think the most essential feature for an artist is, and how would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it before? I would say the most important feature for an artist is a sense of purpose and determination. Without a sense of purpose in yourself and your music, it may be easy to get lost and focus on the wrong things. Determination is important because it takes a lot of work and a lot of guts to step out of your comfort zone and continue to grow as an artist. My music is a pop style with a positive feeling on most songs. I try to be an optimistic person, and I try to convey that through my music. I would also like to think of it as an inspirational reminder of one's beauty and that you are not alone. What's next for IAMSYDNEYB? Can we expect to hear more new music soon? Finally, Is there anything you want to say to your fans? I currently have 12 songs ready and waiting to be released and a couple of music videos we're getting ready to film. The last reminder I want to give is that everyone has beauty and a purpose, and no one is alone. Instagram

Born in South Ghana and raised in the vibrant streets of the Bronx, Osei embarked on his musical journey in 2018 with the release of his acclaimed debut EP, “Product of Environment.” Having garnered significant buzz with an impeccable flow and tongue-twisting yet meaningful lyricism, he’s faithfully honed his craft, steadily improving and evolving with each new release. Following his solo debut, Osei co-founded the independent collective Maybe There’s Life alongside his Harvard roommate, Lincoln, and fellow New York artist, Tobias Defoe. After making his triumphant debut with the riveting collaboration EP “Harlem Nights,” he’s gone from strength to strength, skillfully blending pop, R&B, soul, classic rock, and hip-hop elements, making for a unique listening experience. A magnetic personality who never shies away from the bright lights, he’s also captivated audiences with his electric live performances, opening for notable industry acts like Vic Mensa, Bazzi, and Kiiara. “24 Hours” is the latest product of Osei’s artistic brilliance and also serves as a herald for his sophomore full-length mixtape, set to be released in late 2023. Starting with a groovy guitar and drum combo, the instrumentals for this track are flawlessly produced. The instrumentals perfectly match Osei’s energy and provide a sharp headspace from which his lyrical performance is elevated to even greater heights. As he drops bars like “Give a fuck of what they claimin’ that the rumors are / Good luck tryin’ find a way to resist,” Osei’s charisma is palpable, and it’s easy to find yourself swept up in his pace. The music video for “24 Hours” is in typical Osei fashion, a sharp, calculated, and ultimately entertaining spectacle. Featuring crisp videography and an effortlessly charismatic performance from Osei, the camera follows Osei as he wakes up and goes about his day. Whether he’s chilling at his apartment, in the city, or heading out at night, bars like “I’m here for one night, so let’s turn it to a splash / Bout 24 hours til it’s back to the cash” ensure viewers are locked on to his every move. Additionally, vintage effects and dark shading add a nice touch to the viewing experience. When Osei raps directly at the camera, he does so with an intensity and poise that makes it impossible not to be enthralled. Mike Osei’s “24 Hours” is a riveting and attention gripping release that’s sure to resonate with fans of hip-hop and lyrical ability. Whenever you’re ready, tap in and stream Mike Osei’s “24 Hours”, available now on all major streaming platforms, and don't forget to check out "24 Hours" official music video. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Mike Osei! We loved “24 Hours,” and we had to ask! What was the creative process like for this song? Did the final version turn out exactly how you first envisioned it? Thanks for having me, and thanks for the love. If I had to describe the process behind “24 Hours” in a few words, I’d say: spontaneous, sudden, and empowering. I had just finished school at Harvard, wrapped up a very long project, was balancing three jobs, and was about to get evicted from my crib outta nowhere. I needed some release from it all, but since work makes it tough to turn up like I’d love to, I turned to the music to let it out. So I told a story about linking up with the homies, meeting someone new, saying something sweet to her, and enjoying it like you only have 24 hours to do. I wrote it over a beat I found online, and the crazy thing is, I had no plans to release it until I posted a snippet of me rapping over that main loop—just on some “gotta post content” type timing, and it hit the algorithm, ended up getting over 30k views, and I was like…aight I have to drop it now. Hit the studio with Lincoln, banged out the 2nd verse breakdown, recorded it ASAP, and it was a wrap. Very happy with the sound and the vision. What was the inspiration behind the music video, and what was your favorite part of bringing the vision for that inspiration to life? The music video was an idea that hit me about a day or two after I heard the final master and started thinking about how I wanted to promote the song. I dropped a couple earlier this year for my songs “Somebody” and “To Infinity,” where the visuals were the focus, but this time I was thinking, “How can I hit visuals and tell a story at the same time?” So I thought about making a video that visualizes me over 24 hours a day. I wanted to show the wake-up, the panicked run to the studio because I’m chronically late, the work in the studio, the links and turn-up with my gang and lady, and everything in between. My favorite part was def working with the guys—shout out to Vidhu Kota, Wallace Hallot, and Siwoo Kim for their work. It was Vidhu’s idea to have me wake up at the start, then end with me knocking out into the same frame I woke up from, to make it look like a 24-hour loop, and I thought that was certified genius, for real. You mentioned that you grew up in The Bronx, NYC! How did growing up in such a vibrant musical city influence your growth as an artist? Living in the city is a cheat code for marking art. There isn’t any other place that has what we got here. When you grow up in a place where anywhere you go, you are liable to see a gorgeous mural, chat with someone with an inspiring back story, peep a fire live performance for free, and on top of that, you get access to an entire world of people, sights, bright lights, and all that; you set up to be an artist in a way that’s crazy tough for any other upbringing to compete with. Being from the boogie down is why I love hip-hop as much as I do and feel so in touch with the craft. What goals do you want to achieve through your music, and how would you describe it to someone who hasn’t heard it before? I want to meet my potential. Wherever that leads me, we’ll see, but I’m betting on it being somewhere people can’t even imagine right now. I feel like the world of music, especially hip hop, has felt like it’s been needing something with substance for a while now. Real stories, honest songwriting, a fresh sound, a fresh story, and a fire in the heart that burn harder than anyone else. That’s precisely what I’m bringing, and the same goes for the collective I represent, Maybe There’s Life. What’s next for Mike Osei? You mentioned your sophomore full-length mixtape is slated for release later this year, right? Anything you want to say to your fans? What’s next is a brand new single called “Level Up,” that’ll be a collab with me and Lincoln. Brilliant artist, a brilliant producer, and exciting work we put together. After that, we got more singles on the way while we prepared for the entire album drop. Big thank you to everyone supporting. Instagram TikTok

- Take A Dose Of Nik Rael’s Wistful Hit, “Medicine Man”
Nik Rael is known for music and lyrics that come from his soul. The Los Angeles native currently resides in New Jersey, but not before living in Pennsylvania, where you could find him singing in the choir, participating in drama club productions, and forming a band of his own in college. Although he grew up listening to The Beatles and feasting on his musician father's incredible record collection from 60's and 70's rock to pop, soul, and jazz, his favorite singers are soul singers, including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. Through the classic passion throughout each melodic note in his latest single, "Medicine Man," Nik Rael emanates to us in a personal song about rebirth, new beginnings, and the possibility of new love. Many tenors embrace the organic approach of live instrumentation and the velvety truths classic rock and Americana beholds. Every artistic element blends seamlessly together as the entirety of "Medicine Man" carries forth the robust experiences shared by Nik Rael in an uncanny storytelling fashion. He states, "I got the idea to have a song called, "Medicine Man" because I'm named after my mother's grandfather, a Cherokee Indian medicine man. My first name, Nikolaz, is my mother's phonetic spelling of his name's pronunciation. It emphasizes the second syllable, but I always go by Nik. I originally had this grand concept for the song about being a medicine man and the magical and spiritual implications." Nik Rael's wistful croons wrap you in the warmth of authenticity as he pulls you deeper into his world through the themes this feel-good record dissects. You can't help but fixate your attention on the amalgamation of musicality that forms the beloved foundation upon which Rael's poignant messaging rests. Produced by Todd Mihan and recorded in his home studio Hyde Park, NY, this collaborative effort blows us out of the water as Rael's contributions remain in the songwriting, acoustic guitar, vocals, and percussion, while Mihan's are with the drums, bass, lead guitar and mandolin keys. Divulging the nature of the journey and his determination to see what life has in store for him, "Medicine Man" is a record that offers a nostalgic yet refreshing twist on the road to our destiny. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Nik Rael! We can't stop listening to your latest release, "Medicine Man." With such a nostalgic approach to your music, what inspires you to hone in on that sound in the new age of mainstream sounds? I don't see my approach as nostalgic, but I admit I prefer organic music performed by live musicians. Having my head on a laptop all day to create a song doesn't appeal to me. I like to feel the music in my body and soul. I think that's why I love the acoustic guitar so much - the sound comes from the fingers and the wood and steel strings of the guitar itself, not some digital plug-in or sample. More than anything, I'm a live performer and tend to take a performance approach when I record. Throughout this record, you pour your heart into themes of rebirth, new beginnings, and the possibility of new love. Are there any experiences in particular that sparked the creation of this track? Well, it's just a time for rebirth and new beginnings for me. I've recently gone through a painful divorce, and it's been a very difficult year. But with giant changes, there are opportunities—a chance at a new life and love. It's a whole new world for me, so I'm embracing that and all that might come my way. It's exciting. Have you found that your songwriting has adapted through the various places you've lived? What stands out the most from L.A to New Jersey? I feel like I've taken LA with me everywhere I've gone. I think LA is stamped on me. My parents were hippies in LA, went to the Monterey Pop Festival, and saw Hendrix. This was the home I was born into. Then we moved east, and NJ and NYC have made their marks on me. I'm certainly an east-coaster now. This is my home. I love living in New Jersey: the beautiful changes in the seasons, the hustle and bustle. I think I've gotten my artistic musician approach to life from LA and my parents. From my life in NJ and NYC, I've added some toughness and some grit, which is necessary to get by around here. When crafting personal songs that dip into vivid lyricism, do you find it easy or difficult to transport yourself back to the moment you endured those feelings? Felling the emotions from anything is easy for me. I'm a very emotional person. However, I often find that during the songwriting process, I feel somewhat detached. It's usually later on, after the song is complete that the personal impact of what I have written will hit me. I'll hear back a lyric, and suddenly, my eyes will tear up. Everything I write is personal. It all has significant meaning for me, or I wouldn't commit to it. I don't do light-hearted lyrics. Even the fun songs, like '81 Ford Granada, are emotional for me - every word in that song is accurate. It's a silly story about a car, but it's my life story - at least it was at the time. Generally, my lyrics are a direct window to my heart. It's all there: If you want to know me, listen to my lyrics. What do you hope your audience takes away from the message of "Medicine Man?" Wherever you are in life, a new beginning is possible. I'm looking for a new love in Medicine Man, but most importantly, I'm looking to find someone to help heal. I'm looking to find someone who needs me. We've all been beaten up and betrayed. I guess the message is, "Let's heal together - it's going to be a blast." Instagram Facebook
