Thank you so much for having me and I appreciate the kind words of my new single. My songwriter and I wanted to push the envelope with the message behind the song. Most of my releases have been very purposeful and I think this one means even more to me because it truly was written to be carefree and to remind others not to worry so much about what others think of you. The words in the song have a very seductive feel to them and have tons of sexual innuendo in them. We wanted to show another side of me that most people might not realize. It was really fun to play up a sexual vixen and push the envelope with this type of sound and feel. You've mentioned that "Tell Me Your Name" marks a new musical era for you. Why is that so? This era showcases a bolder side of me musically. The lyrics themselves take the listener to a very exotic space and that was by design. Growing up I’ve always looked up to artists like Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Christina Aguilera who all went through an evolution with their image with certain songs, like “I’m A Slave For You”, “Wrecking Ball” and “Dirrty.” This song “Tell Me Your Name” follows in that same footsteps. We wanted to have this song to give the audience a new taste of me as an artist and the endless possibilities of where I plan to take my career musically. It’s a mature sound and very different from anything I’ve released so far. Could you tell us more about the future "Tell Me Your Name" music video? What should viewers expect from that visual? The music video was shot in Los Angeles, and we had the best time on set. This was the first time I directed a music video, and I gave a lot of creative input regarding how I wanted to portray myself and the extras you see in the music video. The video is by far my most racy video yet. You see tons of shirtless moments of myself and the male dancers, and you can tell within the first couple of seconds that we’re entering into an edgier era. We used different sets to give the visual a lot of texture and had fun with the fashion choices. One stand-out wardrobe piece I wore was this red latex bodysuit that was a major nod to my music icon, Britney Spears, from her “Oops I Did It Again” music video. I hope the audience gets that reference when the video drops in June for Pride Month. Did you create the production for "Tell Me Your Name," or did you team up with any producers to help bring this song to life? I’ve been working with the same producers since day one. MELT Music and I have worked together over the years to develop my unique sound and when I sent them over the record, they immediately knew the assignment and put together what you hear today. I wouldn’t be here without them so I’m grateful we were able to get this song in time for the summer. How did you want listeners to feel when hearing "Tell Me Your Name"? What was your goal when it comes to their experience? I want my listeners to feel super strong and capable of doing anything they put their minds to, especially when it comes to pushing the envelope. Like all songs, it is exciting to take a melody in your head, a few strums on a guitar, an earworm, or whatever it takes ,to get it rolling. Next, getting it down as a demo to the best of my ability and then pass it over to p.d.wohl to take it up a few notches, sparkle, and shine while still retaining its original essence.  Do you have any favorite music-related memories you’d like to share? I suppose it would be my first experience in a major studio, this one being the legendary Mushroom Studios in Vancouver with legend British producer John Schroeder. John produced many great British artists, including Status Quo’s “Pictures of Matchstick Men,” wrote a number one song for Helen Shapiro with “Walking Back To Happiness," and his own Sounds Orchestral who had a million seller with "Cast Your Fate To The Wind.” I heard him being interviewed on the radio one day, and he spoke about how he just moved to Vancouver and was looking for songs to record. We sent him a couple we recorded on 4 track cassette, and he was interested enough to do a project. What a fabulous introduction going from a 4 track demo to working with a gem producer, He showed me so much just observing him work alongside a great studio engineer Lindsay Kidd who worked for Decca in Britain and many twisted the knobs for great artists in Vancouver. Do you have any advice for any aspiring musicians who might want to follow in your footsteps? Careful wear you tread but follow your dreams and visions. Believe in yourself, and don’t ever stop thinking you can’t. I am still excited to go into my fourth decade of music-making, and I still have stars in my eyes. What does music mean to you, and what goals do you want to achieve through your music? Music and art are my passions, and creating is my happy place. I feel blessed that my muses can be completed to the best of my ability. Having my stuff now recorded allows it to be forever available for new ears and eyes to discover. That is wonderful! We loved “For The Loved Ones,” and we wanted to ask! What was your initial vision for this release, and how similar did the final version end up being to this initial vision? 'Songs For The Loved Ones' initial version is actually quite similar to the original one that I wrote some years ago. It is one of my favorite songs, and after some different versions, I decided that this one, quite a simple version with acoustic guitar, suits the song best. Can you take us through your creative process for a typical release? The creative process for me is that when I write the songs, I usually have some words or sentences that, for some reason, feel like they need to be in a song. So I start writing lyrics, and when the lyrics are ready, for the most part, I start thinking about the melody and chords; my mood and emotions are very tangible in those moments. Then I just need my space and my instruments: piano or guitar. I started with piano but these days I often play the guitar in the songwriting process. When the song is ready, I start thinking about the recording process, what kind of production, and what instruments there will be. I call my musicians, and we set up a date for the recordings and go through the song. This song has very simple instrumentation as can be heard and the guitarist in it is Matti Kuuppo, I think his style of playing suits the songs very well, he has a lot of spirit in his playing. Tapani Rauha does the recording and editing. We did the recordings in Turku, Finland. What do you think is the most important quality for an artist to have? I think the most important quality for an artist is the desire to create, and I think also through the creative process to bring more light into this world. What does music mean to you? To me, music is the ultimate beauty. It is not bound to any shape or size, not even to time. What’s next for Katrina Clemsen? Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans? I am constantly writing new songs, and I will release more soon. I am currently recording another song, one that I have been working on for a while now. It should be ready in May. What was your favorite part about creating "Everything But The Rain?" Which part of the process did you enjoy most? My favorite part of the process of creating “Everything But The Rain” was definitely finding the melodies for the verses and chorus. I take pleasure in creating something out of nothing and seeing the progress of a song that I initially wanted to simply have fun creating, seeing how it has impacted not only myself but the people around me. What’s been your biggest challenge so far, and what’s been your fondest music-related memory as well? This may sound typical, but a big challenge is not to be so hard on myself, which is alluded to in Gold Star. Not chasing perfection but wanting to put out the best I can to share with the world can sometimes become overwhelming. So, the biggest challenge is finding that fine line and allowing myself more grace. As far as my fondest memory, I had the honor of opening Martina McBride in 2019. My first CD as a child was her Greatest Hits album, and it felt like such a full-circle moment. They say don’t meet your idols but Martina and her team were so incredible. I tried so hard to be cool when I met her, but I absolutely was not. That night and experience was everything I could have ever hoped for. What does music mean to you? Music is living. As I go through life, there is always a song in my head, on the radio, or on the speaker in the grocery store. It has allowed me the opportunity to be myself and find myself. Music has been a huge part of my life since I was a child, and so many of the big moments in my mind are because of music. Music has connected me with so many incredible people and fans for which I am forever grateful. If your audience could take one thing away from your music, what would you want it to be? I am such an optimistic person, and my hope, as a takeaway, for anyone listening to my music is to believe in themselves. We had less than a week to create the storyline, hire the crew (we were grateful to work with many of our talented friends on this), and plan everything. Our executive producer had a location available we could use for no fee, but it was only available for one date a week out. So it was a bit of a wild process pulling everything together so quickly, but so worth it! What initially inspired you to pursue music seriously, and what inspires you to keep making music today? I started taking singing lessons when I was 4 years old. I was constantly singing Disney songs in my kindergarten class, and the teacher told my mother I should consider voice lessons as I was hitting all the right pitches, apparently! I auditioned for a voice teacher so she could see if I was ready at that age. She took me on, and I never looked back! I then did musical theater and loved acting and singing growing up. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, which I loved. I always knew I wanted to move to LA to pursue my dreams, and I did. I’ve been singing my whole life, and entertaining is my passion! If your listeners could take one thing away from “Girls’ Night Out,” what would you want it to be? I would love all the girls (and guys, everyone!) to feel happy and excited again to be free, confident, and happy. Going through the pandemic a few years ago, I feel like the world went through this major collective trauma, and it’s slowly coming out of it. I feel like a lot of music on the radio in the last few years has been pretty dark and somber. There’s definitely a place for that type of music, but I normally listen to upbeat music, like Shania Twain and Dolly Parton, and dance music, because that pumps me up! I want to inspire excitement, joy, and happiness in as many folks as possible through my art. I also wrote the song as a double meaning - yes, it’s time for the girls to go out (woo!), but it’s also time for more female artists to be played on country radio! For many years now, it’s been filled with mostly male artists, and while guys are great, it’s time for the ladies to have their fair share of the country world! What does music mean to you, and what goals do you want to achieve through your music? Music is my passion, and I am so grateful I have been making music for most of my life.
