Branson Kane Milsap is the true epitome of an independent artist. Hailing from Nashville, TN, Branson works under the moniker Blindfolds And Daggers. His debut, full-length album "Light Thief" came out in the spring of 2018. This project blends alternative rock from another era, post-punk, and nu-wave to create an unexpected yet enjoyable experience. I usually start out messing with guitar ideas first, then open up a digital audio workstation and map out and write simple drums on a grid followed up by using a midi keys controller to do the strings. I was living in the upstairs section of an old Victorian Home when I wrote "Chasing A Ghost" and that house was definitely haunted. How many instruments can you play? How much of your music is organic and how much is electronic? Four instruments, everything is organic. The only thing electronic is the sequencing in which I use single hit drum stems and write the drums on a grid. Blindfolds And Daggers is a 100% self contained independent project in which I created in it's entirety alone, including all instruments played, songwriting, lyricism, production, music videos, branding, photography, vocals and web design. Can you dive into details about the lyrics in “Chasing A Ghost”? Most certainly ! The lyrics are about not being able to escape the thought of someone that you had once truly loved but had to leave, so even after all of the years that have gone by you want to break the silence and let them know you're still there. What are your thoughts on mainstream music today? Haha you're trying to get me in trouble. Well creating music or anything really is just an artistic form of self expression so people are free to do whatever they want. :) I mean if you want to sing something like "grab'em by da booty grab'em by da booty grab'em grab'em grab'em by da booty WHAT !" Then that's your prerogative. I kind of stay in my own little world consumed by things that interest me so I truly have no idea what goes on within the mainstream.As a kid I was heavily influenced by skateboard culture which introduced me to various styles of rock music old and new. What do you hope to achieve through the end of 2019? Hopefully put a band together around the project, record new material as a creative collective and hit the road. I recently released "Shiny Things" and "Vanish Thin" on iTunes and Amazon Music which are a few more songs from the Blindfolds And Daggers LP "Light Thief" So hopefully start promoting those songs as well as the music videos. Blindfolds And Daggers is all DIY so pushing it out commercially is very slow paced, I need all the help I can get on the marketing end. Hailing from the east side of Chicago, Spitgod J and Scubba Stve are underground hip-hop artists bringing a new sound to the music scene in their hometown. What the song Cool-Aid represents for us is "truth" meaning everything that we say or preach to the listener we live and believe in whole heartedly so this is definitely some cool aid you can sip on its ok cause its pure. Is live performance an important part of what you do, or of your plans? Yes we'd definitely like to perform more. How has 2019 been so far for you? I’ve been around Music basically all my life. My Mother, (Mini Curry) hit the billboard pop charts in 1987 and was signed to Teddy Pendergrass. My Father Albert Chisolm III is a Jazz/R&B musician. They groomed me for it so it’s in my blood. I Started writing and rapping at 14yrs old and Started producing and selling beats at 16 years old. In what ways has your sound evolved over the years? Being the child of a musician means constantly being on the road and moving from one state to another. It was tough as a child but it gave me the ability to connect and relate to people from different areas. Over the years I’ve developed my writing style to cater to all audiences from the West to the East coast and the south. Diversifying my rap style and cadence for the New school and saving room to pay homage to the old school. What can you tell us about your track “Warrior Pride”? What do you hope your listeners take away from it? Warrior Pride is a theme song I partnered with Janya Black (Writer, Director) to write for the movie Warrior Pride. It’s a great movie about a AAU basketball team that over came adversity and defied the odds. It gives you a deep look into the challenges kids face chasing their dreams and the obstacles they go through with their families. It’s actually based on a true story. The song follows the Movie and mirrors the determination and drive of the coach and the team. It’s a Go! Fight! Win! Kind of song lol. When people listen I hope they are encouraged to never give up on their dreams and are motivated to go after what they want not just in sports but in life period. What’s the songwriting process like? Reading the script, talking to different kids about their passion for basketball and of course the beat produced by Smerf Beats gave me a lot of inspiration. Other than that just pen to pad and grinding it out. What have been some of your proudest or most memorable moments in music so far? Being at the BET Awards was like a dream come true. Just being in the atmosphere of it all and mingling with the stars was confirmation that this is something I want to be doing for the rest of my life. Angie Martinez, Kirk Franklin, Fantasia, Rae Sremmurd among others were very informative and welcoming with me being a new artist on the scene. The radio floor was stacked with all the top radio stations around the Nation. Tampa bays own Queen B and DJ Chase of 95.7FM interviewed me on my new record “100” featuring Tory Lanez and gave me a lot of support. The experience was surreal and very humbling and I’m looking forward to many more. Of course Writing and recording the theme song to the Movie “Warrior Pride” was equally humbling and a very proud moment for me. I even got a chance to audition and earn a role as “Dante” in the Movie which was also child hood dream come true. Just puts the saying “hard work and dedication pays off” in perspective. Truly blessed to be doing something I love. Does your creativity manifest itself in any other way? Naturally being a writer and recording artist manifest in different ways in life. It’s tough for independent artist to say the least. A lot of hard work, a lot of closed doors and detours along the way. But like everything in life if you believe in yourself, work tirelessly and keep God before everything you do success is inevitable. Being a proud father is also something that drives me. What’s the overall concept of this project? “I’d love to pick a singular concept for the album, but it is about so much more. His heart and his mind have been shattered. His journey forward is through the terrors and changes of his psyche. Through trial and error, Jack ventures off to find himself once again.” - Alex Khoury What do you hope your fans take away from your music? This album is unique in that no two songs really fit into the same genre but all are connected by a story and themes within the lyrics. We hope we can take the listeners on a sonic and emotional journey that is cohesive while also being disjointed and uncomfortable, much like life and art. Camlann is an alternative new band from Jakarta, Indonesia. Made up of members A-be (frontman/vocals), Vinyl Godfrey (guitarist/songwriter), and Zan (synthesizer/production), the group creates an individual sound influenced by dark post-punk. We have a dark and gloomy sounds in our music, yet we also have a melancholic and dreamy touch in it. Our sound are heavily influenced by the gloomy 80's goth music (specifically darkwave and post punk). Yet, we also put some 60's dark surf elements in our songs to add a nostalgic touch in it. How did Camlann come to fruition?’ We don't really know, we just follow the flow. It was in early July 2019, when we contacted a local online magazine/press for promoting our music on their instagram account. Not long after that, our audience increases and an Indonesian music manager and record label owner, Anida Bajumi, asked us via Instagram DM if we want to work with her. So we said yes, and not long after that we become the part of the Indonesian record label, Ordo Nocturno. Not long after that, our debut EP, "The Arrival", released in August 4 2019. What are the lyrics in “What’s The Worth Of Living?” about? What do you hope your listeners take away from this track? The lyrics are written about depression and hopelessness. It is written about somebody who's hopeless about their condition in live since life "took everything and gave none to them" (based on the fictional character's prespective). The song talks about a person who's basically suffers from depression and questioning the meaning of life itself. It's between questioning, hopelessness, and depression. How have your musical influences inspired your sound? We're heavily influenced by several 80's goth musicians and modern goth musicians too, such as Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Clan of Xymox, Xmal Deustchland, Drab Majesty, Black Marble, and Lebanon Hanover. Our influences has influenced us really hard on our songwritting and composition, on our sounding and on our vibes too. Without them, Camlann's sounding will never be the same and we'll never be in this position with this image and sound. What’s next for Camlann? Pitching their music somewhere between arena rock and the classic sound of 1960's soul singers. PHNTMS is a Philadelphia-based band that aims to do things a little different than the norm. The band has opened up for big acts such as The 1975, Kings of Leon, Bastille, and Fitz & The Tantrums. Storming through the speakers with nothing so much as an introduction or a moment of quiet, “Hotel” is a brilliantly upbeat and deeply thoughtful rock song one that subtly leans towards punk-rock with its fast-paced power-chords and the often grunge-soaked nature of the leading melody. The song Hotel is about the coming and going of a relationship. How an intimate get away quickly turned into an unforgivable betrayal. Set in a hotel, the lyrics of the song depict a relationship falling apart and coming to an end after a secret affair is exposed. What does this project represent for you? This project is very special to us. There is an erie, unspoken drive when we all get in a room together, whether writing or performing. This project helps us all peel back the layers of our lives. Writing and performing these songs have been a major outlet for us. Where is the best setting to listen to your songs, and what do you hope people take away from them? Setting is a reoccurring theme in our music, hence the aluminating arrows. Our songs are about reflecting on past friendships and relationships. A long drive, alone, would be the best setting. Our music is unapologetic and vulnerable hoping to reflect onto the listener. How does the songwriting and recording process compare to live performance for you? Both processes come pretty easily for us. One of our guitar players will have an idea and then it’ll just go from there. It's hard to describe performing. We love performing! We are loud and energetic. Thats where our singer, Alyssa, really lays it all out for the audience. What are your main aspirations as a band going forward? Release some material we’ve been working on. Write! Write! Write! Get out and play shows, share our music with others. Stay humble throughout our journey as a band. Have you had professional training or managed to hone your vocal ability over time? Thank you! I've taken vocal training since I was 12 and throughout high school till I was 18. I was in choir and drama club which helped me grow my voice and stage presence. I graduated with a BFA in Musical Theater from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles and New York. I honed in what I learned by letting go of my training and learning to accept my voice and the imperfections which has lead my voice to be unique. What do the lyrics in this song mean to you? Do you ever worry about being too vulnerable through your songwriting? As an artist you have to be vulnerable even though it's uncomfortable, that's what makes good art. The lyrics in this song are applicable to many circumstances, which is a common theme on our record. "Concrete Jungle" represents the feeling of being stuck in a concrete world and situation, feeling helpless without any explanation and knowing at the time that's where you belong and having to settle within the present chaos. Bee-Z is a talented artist making his name known from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Currently studying Mechanical Engineering, Bee-Z finds time to make contemporary hip-hop music. Bee-Z has been fine-tuning his craft for years but it wasn’t until college when he found a producer to mix and master his tracks that he truly got started. How do you manage to successfully fuse so many genres into one cohesive sound? I grew up listening to a lot of different genres of music: hip hop, rnb, rap Afrobeat and even Jazz... So it’s only natural that I would like to fuse them in my sound. Otherwise it happens almost unconsciously. Tell us about the lyrics in “Mulan”! What inspired this song? This song is very unique to me. I named it Mulan right when I heard the beat, usually the name of the song comes last for me. The name pretty much shaped the song and the rest just fell in place. And no, it wasn’t inspired by my personal experiences. What has been one of your most memorable or life-changing achievements as an artist so far? Like I said I started off just playing the trumpet. So one day after I played a song on my trumpet at my home church in Nigeria, a girl came up to me with her eyes filled with tears and she hugged me saying thank you for playing. I feel like that moment changed me. The fact that my music has that much impact on people. I feel like that’s why I still make music and I don’t plan on stopping. What are your main aspirations as an artist going forward? Honestly I don’t know. I’m just doing what I love and I hope my music will touch the lives of a lot of people someday.
