- Contemporary R&B Artist Juic3Boy Drops “Call On Me”
Joseph Owusu aka Juic3Boy is an authentically talented artist, songwriter and creative director hailing from Ottawa,Canada and now residing in Edmonton, Canada. Creating music for over three years now, music was a hidden talent that found him when Juic3Boy was going through a critical time of his life. Juic3Boy states that music hit him just when he needed it. He was struggling to find his passion in life and was able to thrive while creating melodies and writing songs on his own time. From there on Juic3Boy was a force to be reckoned with and others in his city noticed there was a new natural talent in him. Juic3Boy struggled to release new musical content after his first two singles because of school and personal issues. Juic3Boy explains that through the help of his older brother and his faith in God, he was able to overcome the obstacles he was facing. "Lost For Love" is a R&B/Trapsoul styled EP that features storytelling elements about the hardships and heartbreaks Juic3Boy has been faced with. It's a very deep but promising project that speaks to men and women alike, while highlighting harsh realities between the two. The 5-song project includes the stand out track "Call on Me". Juic3Boy shows an example of his soft smooth vocals on this slow record, a classic from start to finish! “Call On Me” is a flawless R&B and brilliantly soulful hit. The smooth and deliberate backbeat and echoing synths remind me of The Weeknd’s sound, but Juic3Boy is more original than that. The melancholy and emotion in his tone takes on a striking physicality. The girl he sings about in the song is a girl he would do anything for. The emotive lyricism and flawless deliver are key points for uncovering subtle textures in his sound. He is able to paint a picture in our minds through his skilled aesthetic and layered vibes. I love this single because it’s easy to chill to but you allows you to escape into the lyrics and sound. I highly recommend checking out “Call On Me” and the entire collection of “Lost For Love” available on all major streaming platforms. Stay on the lookout for Juic3Boy! Check out “Call On Me” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Hi Juic3Boy! Can you talk more about the meaning behind “Call On Me”? What inspired it? Call on Me was inspired by my trip to Toronto last winter, I came across a beautiful girl on the train and once I set my eyes on her, I felt an instant connection with her. The meaning behind the song was basically portraying the existing challenge we would have if we would want to start a relationship which was our long distance. I titled the song Call on Me because I wanted her to know if she ever needed me I was one Call away and that I would do anything for her even if it meant having a long distance relationship. What’s the theme of your EP “Lost For Love”? The theme of my EP is R&B/Trapsoul themed project. I created this purposely because I felt that was the best way I could share my love/heatbreak stories to listeners. I also believe that a lot of people who have heard my music before, have never seen me enter into a pocket like this, so it was definitely something new for them and a new challenge for me, because I wasn't sure how the project would be received. Can you recall the first song you ever wrote? How would you compare it to your writing abilities now? The first song I ever wrote was called "Underrated". Although that song impressed, I definitely would say I've grown lyrically since that time. The strong was strictly hip hop and nothing else but now I am able to write to many more styles of productions and different genres. Now I am proving my versatility with the songs I write and my melodies are proving that I am not just an hip-hop artist but an Artist with a variety of range that is still evolving. What are some challenges you faced while writing “Call On Me”? I held off on Call on Me for a few months because I wanted it to be the blueprint of my EP. I knew I had the right beat to it, but I kept re-writing lyrics and changing flows until the song started hitting me the way I wanted it too. I'd say the biggest challenge was getting it finally done but once I got it done in the studio, I almost couldn't believe I created the song, I definitely put my heart and soul into it and rest was history. I was happy with the final product. In your music career so far, what would you say your most proud of? So far in my music career personally I'm most proud of still believing in myself. There's been difficult times for myself and as low as I get I still manage to trust God and believe in his plan for me. I obviously know its a journey but I enjoy it because it causes me to keep working hard. I am also proud to say I have inspired people through my music and made a positive difference around my community. If I had to talk about ONLY one thing I've created musically that I'm most proud of it would definitely be the "Cornerstore" video. I was able to team up with my friend and Director Ben Telford in my hometown of Ottawa and create a visual of my childhood story of my memories growing up in the hood. I'm happy I was able to do this and put smiles on the faces of the children in the community, they're what I call "our future leaders". - K.H.R’s Pride For Toronto And His Team Are Real In “The North” ft DomBank$
Adebowale Osunbiyi was born and raised in Toronto and goes by the professional name K.H.R (King Has Returned). His name is actually the English translation from Yoruba. Growing up with a diverse list of musical influences, K.H.R leans towards hip-hop, R&B and afropop. Although music was always a large part of his life, K.H.R didn’t start making music until his decision to leave university and pursue his passion. K.H.R dropped out of university and moved downtown to meet artists to produce and mix for, as well as further establishing his own sound. “The North” ft. DomBank$ is a catchy hip-hop track all about the Raptors winning the NBA finals. The flawless verses are about the pride he has for his city. Toronto took on a different energy after taking the NBA finals. K.H.R had faith in the team all along and mixes bar after bar over a dope and alluring beat. This song perfectly highlights the never ending ambition and pride that Toronto has for its team. “The North” shows off K.H.R’s insatiable skills that have manifested into a prominent career in the music industry. “The North” has a dark and haunting trap beat fitting to K.H.R’s overall aesthetic. It’s hard hitting, edgy, current, and all around dope track. Prolific rhyme slinger DomBank$ spits addicting and relatable lyrics for all his fans to vibe to. He’s a talented rapper and lyricist and his artistry and grit shines through in “The North”. The track focuses on the monumental and legendary Raptors win that will go down in history, just like this track. Check out “The North” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Welcome to BuzzMusic! Can you start by telling our readers how you got started making music? I was in school for Nuclear Engineering and one of the people in my dorm was an audio engineer and I would watch him mix and make beats. Eventually i started making beats so often that I wasn't interested in school anymore and wanted to focus on learning to mix and make beats. Eventually I dropped out and started making beats for different artists in Toronto. The more I worked with rappers and singers, the more I got the urge to execute my own vision for songs. I'd always loved freestyling and writing poems so when I would make a beat for someone or mix a song, I'd already have lyrics in my head for a track before the artist did so one day I made a beat and freestyled a track. I showed it to my homies and they wanted me to drop it right away so after that I started recording myself everyday to develop a sound. We’re really into your song “The North”! Can you tell us more about it? What's your writing process like? I've been a lifelong fan of the NBA and was watching the raptors play against the Golden State warriors in the NBA finals. It was game 3 and I was making beats with a producer from Toronto named Dombanks and we were inspired by the reaction in the streets from the raptors performance. We were hearing honking, yelling out the window. So we named one of the beats "raptors". Later on game 6 I was watching the game on a TV and flipping through beats till I came across the raptors beat we made and I pulled it up and started recording the song during the 4th quarter when I had a feeling we would win. And when we did win seeing the crowds reaction inspired the hook. How have your Nigerian roots inspired the music you create today! I grew up listening to the music my parents would play. In particular my mom would listen to Ebenezer One, King Sunny Ade, and Fela Kuti. They are very famous in Nigeria and we'll respected across the world. The music they made laid the foundation for the state of African music today and it influenced the types all of the rhythms and grooves that I like to use in beats. Where do you see your career headed by the end of 2019? By the end of 2019 I'm looking to do more performances across America and to network with creatives in America that make videos, clothes, music, and other forms of art. I have a collective of creatives called Osun Tribe. We do events and design different projects in Toronto and I'm looking to expand my team and allow members in who's goals align with ours. What’s next for you? I have singles dropping soon and I'm currently working on my first mixtape "paper cranes" it'll be a good way for people to understand who K.H.R is as an artist, producer, and engineer. Welcome to BuzzMusic Kerone! We’re so happy to have you here with us. Tell us a bit about your upbringing and background? What inspired you to pursue music? Thank you for having me. I was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where my parents met. From a Jamaican Father and Guyanese Mother heritage. Hebrew Rastafrain upbringing. a lot of reggae and music in the family background. My dad ran a Jamaican based sound system called Firestone and all the men in my family pretty much were apart of the Jamaican music scene here in Montreal during the early '90s. That being said I was exposed to a lot of culture and music at an early age in life. My mom always told me as soon as I knew what a microphone was it was in my hands. Music never left my side. At around 5 I told my dad I wanted to pursue music as a career, without hesitation he brought me around his studio friends and showed me the life. I was hooked, the scene and the creation of music. Always writing songs and lyrics. Excited me. Being able to connect with people is important to me. Relationships govern the world and influence is apart of that. I love how music has that effect on us. As a kid and now, I was influenced by Bob Marley and Micheal Jackson. I was amazed by their stardom and artistry. Having an ability for so many people to love and adore them was inspiring, but I paid attention to the influence they had on people with their message of love and peace. Around 14 I was introduced to an art school. Canterbury High, through a family friend in Ottawa, Ontario. Where I later attended. It was a big part of my discovery of sound, art, dance, composition, post-production and the entire music field. After graduation, I attended Collage for music and audio technician at Musitechnic in the Montreal area. Knowing you’ve performed at multiple venues in your lifetime, which has been your favorite and most memorable and why? The most memorable is the first Ottawa reggae festival in 2008. It's so distinct because it was my first time in front of so many people. I met so many artists like Snow, Collie Budz, and Maxi Preist. I had a genuine experience at a young age. What inspired you to write your single “Feel Like”? Well, when I was writing the song I wanted to let my self know not to get caught up in the false reality of my self and the world. I also was writing to my self as a reminder of what not to be. Reenforcing to myself, the life we live in is in our hands and we can do what we want. without hurt to anyone else or our self's. Life is very short and I learned this young. so I wanted to write a piece of music and song to my self and people that anything is possible, and never stop believing in oneself to achieve one's true purpose. Even with distraction and negativity in the world. I need to be positive and light to others. I do what I like and that feels good. “Feel Like” seems to have a strong underlying message behind the lyrics. Mind detailing this to our readers? Don't let other's tell you what to be and when you find who you are. Be that with power and action to inspire people in a healthy way. Always stand up for what you believe in and help people to understand. It's about clarity so things aren't left for misinterpretation. When can our readers expect another hit like “Feel Like” from the only Kerone? I have more projects coming in the near future. I really can't wait to share them. - Nashville Based Duo City Silos Releases New Single “Just Like Her”
City Silos is the dynamic power couple and musical duo of Chris and Kristen Butler. Working tirelessly for the last four years, the husband and wife combo of City Silos has wandered through day jobs and late-night songwriting sessions, sleeping in a van and living on the road, to emerging with a statement-making debut record, “Happy Thoughts”. The spectacular debut album combines melodic rock guitars and synth bass, with a dance groove reminiscent of 80’s pop. They wind their way savagely through blues pop- inflected guitar riffs that stick on the brain and jolt the system alive, guitars crashing into one another and the drum kit setting the whole show on fire. Originally from different corners of the south, Kristen and Chris meld their upbringings, musical backgrounds and styles with ease. Nashville duo City Silos have the sound and alluring capabilities of a veteran act. The chemistry and sheer talent that flows through the speakers in their newest hit “Just Like Her” is breathtaking. Kristen’s vocal register flows freely and flawlessly through emotive lyricism. Pummeling guitars fused with synth laden bass and powerhouse vocals make “Just Like Her” a timeless hit. The track is groovy, relatable and an impressive release from the duo’s debut album. City Silos have the admirable talent of curating music that all listeners can interpret and relate. It’s skills like this that put City Silos on the map in a big way to inspire and galvanize the music scene today. I highly recommend you check out “Just Like Her” and stay tuned for the release of City Silos debut record “Happy Thoughts”. Listen to “Just Like Her” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Welcome to BuzzMusic! When is your debut album “Happy Thoughts” set to be released? KRISTEN: Thanks for having us! Our debut album "Happy Thoughts" is releasing on August 30th, but is available for pre-order on all digital stores now! You can also go to our official store on our website at www.citysilos.com to reserve a copy of Vinyl or CD. How do you draw inspiration from your various musical influences? CHRIS: I don't think it's something intentional that you do but when you start writing those influences just start to come out. For us, it's fun to hear those influences come out in our music, like Paramore or The Black Keys, without trying to. Especially with artists/bands that we grew up listening to like Eric Clapton or Aretha Franklin. Tell us more about the lyrics in “Just Like Her”! What emotions did you have to channel while creating this song? KRISTEN: On the surface, the song describes a woman at a party who's very effortlessly herself and cool, and I think lyrically it's just painting a picture of a woman that is very confident and that other people at this "party" recognize that. What I just described is what the song talks about, but the emotions are influenced by recognizing insecurities and jealousy. What’s your favorite lyric line in “Just Like Her”? Why? KRISTEN: I really like the line "sippin' on her solo cup". I like that because we associate that with the red plastic cup, but it's really an indirect way of saying that she's a "solo" person and doesn't like to lean on others, and that's what that is actually referring to. What can your fans expect from your much anticipated record “Happy Thoughts”? CHRIS: It's really a collection of songs that encompasses everything we wanted to showcase as our debut album. Our influences, thoughts, feelings, etc. The album has an overarching theme of human emotions that aren't so "happy" and we played on that with the title and the title track "Happy Thoughts". What's next for CITY SILOS? KRISTEN: We have one more single and a music video to be released before the album drops on August 30th. We also have a special release showing coming up in Nashville at The Basement on August 26th that people can get a copy of the record early. We'll be hitting the road this fall in support of the album release so keep an eye out on all of our socials for new tour dates! - Don't Mess With The Coolers Or You’ll End Up “Where The Fish Live”
The Coolers are a rock band from right here in Los Angeles, California! They were formed in the summer of 2018 under the roof of drummer/singer Sergio Gonzales’ garage, with long rhythm guitarist Sadie Dean, guitarist/singer Leslie Bumgarner and bass man, JD Ramage. The Coolers are on a mission to prove rock and roll is not dead. With their gritty, raw, catchy and hypnotic guitar hooks and self-reflective lyrics, their 60s meets 90s rock sound and attitude will leave you with a warm cup of nostalgia. With the release of their first self-produced live 2019 EP, “Troglodyte”, at the world famous Clear Lake Recording Studios and mastered by multi-Grammy award winning Lurssen Mastering, they aim to bring the authentic feeling of being at a live show. “Where The Fish Live” is a pummeling new hard-hitting track laced with elements that are dark and haunting. The rhythmic and heavy textures layered with experimental melodies and grooves are what set this track apart in the music industry. Pulling inspiration from their diverse influences, “Where The Fish Live” bleeds through the speakers with a high energy confidence and intense strength. The chemistry within The Coolers becomes clear when you hear the finely-tuned production quality and precise fusion of musical arrangements. ““Where The Fish Live” is a track that has emotion and soul behind it, it’s admirable and leaves us craving more! Stay on the lookout for The Coolers! Check out “Where The Fish Live” here and read more below in our interview with The Coolers. Welcome to BuzzMusic! How did The Coolers come to fruition? How did you create your stage name? We got our stage name from a news article headline that caught Sadie’s eye – in a nutshell a man named Van Ert locked himself in a liquor store beer coolerovernight. When the employees came back the next morning, they found him passed out with all of the cheap beer he could drink. We thought it was super hilarious, felt a deep connection to the dude, because we also like beer. Can you tell us more about the lyrics in “Where The Fish Live”? Down to heart, the lyrics are about murdering your physically abusive spouse. Leslie had the idea of flipping the script in the song world, and making it about a woman taking it into her own hands to stop the abuse from her husband, and give you that visual of how and where it would be done – "Hey man, enough is enough, you’re becoming fish food." Side note – Leslie is happily married, so it’s not art imitating life. What do you hope your listeners take away from your music? We like to think that we’re tipping our hats to old school rock of the 60s with 90s nostalgia. We hope our listeners feel that; just good ol’ rock n’ roll, that we love playing. And above all, have a fun time listening to our songs on repeat. What’s your live performance experience like? Depending on where we’re playing, we’ll switch up our set list to fit that venues vibe. And at every show towards the end of our set, Sadie and Sergio will switch it up, Sadie taking the drum throne and Sergio serving up some heavy riffs on the guitar. We like to give the music goers our momentum from the stage and the songs. And when the crowd throws it back at us, it’s an incredible feeling. We become adrenaline junkies after each show (without the heroin). What was the writing process like for “Where The Fish Live”? Leslie brought in a basic structure of the song that she had in mind for a bluesy gospel type song: lyrics and that pulsating guitar delay. Sadie took it from there giving it the dirty blues rock crunch structure and ocean like guitar curls you hear throughout, and Sergio kicked in the backbone keeping the steady rhythm afloat. When we write songs as a band, one of us will send the group a quick recording off of our phone, being like, "Hey, just thought of this riff/lyric, cool?" then we bring it to our headquarters (Sergio's garage) and go from there fleshing it out to a full fledged song. What’s next for The Coolers? With the release of our first self-produced EP “Troglodyte” coming out August 10th – we’ll also be putting on in tandem to the release, a free show at The Off Beat Bar in Highland Park. From there, plan is to get in new venues we haven’t played at yet, music festivals, shows outside of the LA basin. We’re already woodshedding on a slew of new songs, that we’re planning to record soon as a full album. We love playing music, so expect more of that! - Check Out The Psychedelic Stylings of Futurist In “Olive Mountain”
Futurist is a psychedelic, alternative pop/rock project launched in Brooklyn, NY, with a unique take on psychedelic rock and earnest songwriting achieving a sound best described as "future-classic." Through experimentation, practice and a high energy delivery, Futurist creates a wall of sound that ignites audiences with their own style and modern mythology. The band is known for its associations with folk-lore and psychedelia, with elements of this culture permeating the group's instrumentation, effects, and composition. Their debut 2011 LP “War Is Yesterday” laid the foundation for the anthemic duality found throughout the band's core sound. Groovy new hit “Olive Mountain” is making waves in the alt-rock music scene since it’s released late June 2019. The gritty and hard-hitting track features sultry blues undertones and hypnotizing harmonies. With quirky lyricism and a rhythm section throwing down tight grooves, we love Futurist’s psychedelic rock sound. Upbeat and addicting, “Olive Mountain” is a song that anyone can listen and relate to, or just jam out to. The song gives off a mellow vibe, while still keeping things refreshing and modern. It’s hypnotizing rhythm keeps your interest, while the lyrics let your mind wander. The guitar chords are spectacular throughout, the drumming is precise with hard hitting high hats and the groundbreaking sound of vocals will have you craving more. With so much success already, stay tuned for what Futurist delivers next! Their Sophomore LP “Omens” is set to be released September 27, 2019! Check out “Olive Mountain” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Hi guys! How did you come up with the name Futurist? How did you all meet? There isn’t really any special story behind the band’s name, but we named ourselves Futurist shortly after I moved to New York City from Colorado in the summer 2008. Before I had been performing a lot of the same music under my own name when I lived out there. It has since become more meaningful though as our sound has evolved to use a lot of new technology in our live sound. I am the only original member that is still in the band. Like a lot of bands these days, we’ve notoriously gone through so many musicians given the realities of the DIY growth modern bands face. Joey Campanella, who is my right hand man in all of this, is actually the EIGHTH drummer that has performed with Futurist, but when I met him in the summer of 2011, he was definitely the right fit for what I was originally looking for and over time has become a defining aspect of our sound. The other members are either hired guns or long time collaborators. On our upcoming record, Josh Curry (bass) and Robert Sulzer (guitar) have both contributed substantially to the new tunes. As for our summer shows, we have some additional outstanding musicians on the road with us. When you’re not making music, what do you all do? I have a production company called Avalanche Artists (www.avalancheartists.com), that specializes in animation and graphic design. I’ve been making a lot of animated music videos over the past few years. Joey is a gigging and studio musician, teacher, and repairs instruments. Can you tell us about the meaning behind the lyrics in “Olive Mountain”? What inspired this song? As for the song, the title Olive Mountain is a play on the ‘Mount of Olives,’ from the Bible, infamously where Jesus was found praying in the Garden of Gethsemane the night he was betrayed. So overcome by the horror of what he was to experience in the crucifixion the following day that his sweat was apparently “like drops of blood” and he prayed for strength from God. I think that story is a good metaphor for what the lyrics in this song are ultimately about. The song is split up into two parts, the first being more personal; "Here I am again wallowing in it. Look at the mess you've made of your kingdom. It would appear you’ve gotten your comeuppance.” It’s a plea and a reckoning with a former relationship that was collapsing in front of me and the ways in which I had a hand in the matter. But I continue more haughtily; "I don’t want to know the reason you’ve been throwing stones at me.” There’s nothing I can do. The sides are drawn. The possessions, social circles, and love is cracked into halves and I’m too proud to show my underbelly. The tone shifts in the prechorus to something more sincere; "Okay, I get it. You’re happier, paid off the cable news networks and they’ll spin my words.” This was my internal monologue. The things I would say outright if things weren’t so twisted and hostile. The second half is more of a birds-eye view, the current state of the culture. It’s constant outrage, nihilism, and an ever-diminishing middle ground. Everyone virtue signals to strangers on the internet constantly about how THEY are on the right side of history, but couldn’t last two seconds outside of their own echo chamber, much less attempt to understand or tolerate a difference in opinion. I mean, no one is immune to confirmation bias. The second prechorus echoes the more tender inner thoughts of the first, except now aimed at the world at large; "Okay, I get it. It’s the end of the world. We might as well all go home and give up. I mean, what’s the use in ignoring the control freaks? They’ve had a leg up since before we were born.” It’s a bit tongue and check, but honest. However, it’s the choruses that are the true sentiment I've ultimately arrived at; "Bad undertones and diamond science.” And what makes the diamond shine? It IS all of that heavy and relentless pressure. Is that all you got? What do you hope your listeners take away from your music? We want to make music that people enjoy, and lyrically it’s an outlet for me to say what I really think and people aren’t so guarded against it with their own prejudices. At this point, I’d actually be more curious to know what people take away from it on their own. I love when others come up to me after shows and tell me what the music reminded them of and/or how they took it all in. What was mine is now everyones. What can we expect from your upcoming LP “Omens”? “Omens” is a major evolution from our first record “War Is Yesterday,” both in intention as well as sound. Our first album was very youthful and optimistic, but life happens and everything becomes a bit more nuanced. Our goal with this record was to churn out several singles so we could grow our fanbase, so this LP is to the point. Where our first record was me sort of pulling together the songs and music from scratch, this one is a lot more seasoned and sounds like a band that has been playing together for a while. As for the details, we’re releasing our second single “Bad Air, Still Water” on August 16 with a music video (made by me) and another single/music video on October 4. The record is available everywhere on September 27! Connect with Futurist on social media www.instagram.com/futurist_music twitter.com/futurist_music

I highly recommend you give “Silence” a listen and stay tuned for Jenny Z’s future releases on Spotify! Check out “Silence” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us more about your launch into music? My name is Eugenia Jenny Ziss and I am a 21-year-old Greek chick from Montreal! My passion for music started at a very young age; singing in the crib to anywhere possible. My grandmother bought me my first microphone and recording system when I was just 10 years old and since then, was in the process of getting better! I have been writing music since high school but it is in more recent times where I started making my music public and introducing to the world my art. “Silence” is a great track! How did you come up with it? I came up with this track while going through a confusing time. I was inspired to write something that many people could relate to; about fake people and needing space apart. I found the beat that really caught my attention and the chorus came right away. After the chorus was made, the rest of the song came easy. Inspiration really does help with the creation of something great. A good friend of mine who is also an inspiration for this song, allowed me to use one of his bars which made the song even better! Who are your top three musical influences? It is very hard to choose my top three musical influences but if I must, Avril Lavigne was one of the first artists who inspired me to pursue music from a young age. Drake is another musical influence that has inspired me to write catchy raps and flows. Finally, Ed Sheeran is a great musical influence. His music is very inspiring and he has the voice of an angel. His songs helped me go through tough times and he inspires me to write songs that have deep meaningful messages. How do you feel about today’s mainstream hip-hop? What makes you stand out? In all honesty, today’s mainstream hip-hop is not what it used to be. Today, artists I’m not creative because what they talk about in their songs are either not relatable or full of nonsense. Some hip-hop artists kill the game and create really good music but they’re hard to find. What makes me stand out is my gender. Not many female artists are courageous enough to try and make it in the hip-hop world. With my flow and singing ability, I believe that I could become the new voice of this generation with the help of other successful musical influencers in the game. When can we expect the debut album to drop? The debut album is currently being worked on and if the timing is right, within the next year I should have enough songs mastered in order to create an album. - "ART IS ALIVE IN LA"
Kendra & The Bunnies are LA's newest music rage and we are loving the ENERGY! Lead singer and songwriter, Kendra Muecke shared a little more insight into what brought this musical project to life and where it's headed now! What was the last concert you attended that wasn't your own? Experiencing live music is truly something that moves my soul. The sense of community that arises through shared moments of concert creates understanding amongst us. I really dig that. This family-feeling of a grooving atmosphere is relevant to the Dead & Company concerts I attended at the Hollywood Bowl in June. I enjoy the melodic, bluesy direction that the band is truckin’ towards. It calls for swaying in the breeze and waving a flag of open hearts. Who are your top 3 new/ modern bands? Animal Collective is a favorite of mine. They are very influential to my way of hearing music through their usage of experimental transitions in pitch. The song “Chores” into “For Reverend Green” on the album, “Strawberry Jam”, always gets me thinking between the creative lines. I have also met them a couple times, good people. For sonic variation and life-changing live performances, I rely on Phish. The amount of range they provide in their layered jams and “conducive to saying ‘what?’ lyrics” is a spectacle to be seen and heard. I love those boys and travel often to see them. Thirdly, there is Z-Ro, a Houston rapper who came up in the game working closely with DJ Screw. His soulful slap-back way of describing pain is relatable. For days where I feel torrential emotional rain, I pop in my grey cassette, turn up the deck, and listen to his album, “Look at What You Did to Me”. FYI, that album is certainly explicit. Any dream venues you have yet to play? For sure! Dreaming big is part of who I am. I envision myself playing magical venues such as Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado, the Hollywood Bowl in LA, The Fillmore and Terrapin Crossroads in San Fran, and big festivals like Arise Music Festival, Bonnaroo, and Lockn’. I also look forward to creating music-centered events that give back to our community and raise awareness on important matters, such as water preservation and indigenous people’s rights. What is the best part of being a songwriter? For me, the best part of songwriting is giving poetry a well-rounded life through music. I love transcribing energy into text that becomes sound and then song. There is something about the vocal cadence of certain words placed adjacent to one another that really clicks. It’s like some words are just excited to pieces upon meeting each other. To get what I mean, try saying aloud this phrase from my song “Whoooo Are You?”, which will be on my next album, “of Thank You”. The lyrics read, “Yonder I call from bones that fall, from the rotund conjunction, from the human walking tall”. Those words house so well together. The sounds get up and walk hand-in-hand. Tell us about your latest video! Where was it filmed? My latest music video is for the song, “World Peace a Thing”, from my debut album, “of Vinyl”, by Kendra & the Bunnies. It is a chant singing for better days. It reminds that there is a place for peace within each and everyone of us. I believe it begins in our hearts. It then expands to our minds, our thoughts, and our actions. This song brings attention to the day-to-day ridiculousness of common societal struggles. After all, our neighborhoods and families are ultimately structured just like those in other countries. For the video, I placed myself in nature. When it comes to my mission, I draw energetically from the Native American prophecy of the White Buffalo Calf Woman. It is said upon her returning, world peace will brought into this reality. So, I dance for the shaking up of stagnant energy, allowing space for this healing to manifest. I filmed it in the canyon hills behind Hollywood in the valley. I bring my guitar and hula hoops up there often. What is the greatest part about living in Los Angeles? There are several things I love about LA. First, the historical facet of ‘old Hollywood’. I have a nostalgic frame of mind on a lot of things. Driving around town, I feel there is so much conceptual history that has been produced here in films. Doubling on that nostalgia is the Sunset Strip where a lot of rock ’n rollers used in hang in the 1970s. I like to go there and soak up that culture. Southern California is beautiful too. In places like Malibu, you can be on top of a mountain that overlooks the ocean. It is powerful. Any Vinyl plans for your new music? Yeah! I was recently invited in for a live session at Leesta Vall Sound Recordings in Brooklyn, NY. It is a record label that specializes in cutting tracks directly to vinyl. Basically, I will go in and lay down some songs to be recorded straight onto a 7” lathe cut record. This process makes each track completely unique. It is a snapshot of my sound at the time made specifically with one listener in mind. Brittany's debut album Stay Gold was self-released this year and received raving reviews. Showing off her arsenal of emotion-evoking R&B lyrics and vocals on Stay Gold, the album caught the attention of many fans. Already well known for her incredible vocals, Brittany Campbell’s album “Stay Gold” features the soulful track “Buzz”. A chill R&B vibe, Brittany Campbell keeps us captivated through her descriptive lyricism and intense sound arrangements. I love the textured layers of instrumentals and powerful R&B beats all fused into one spectacular ballad. The lyricism and emotion behind her words is captivating throughout the single and I’d love to know the inspiration behind this track. As a vocalist, Brittany Campbell is gifted beyond her years and we can’t get enough! She’s earned her success and we’re excited to see how much further this rising start will go. Check out “Buzz” here and read more with Brittany Campbell in our interview below! Hi Brittany! Can you tell us more about yourself and what inspires you to write music? I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. My family is 100% Jamaican, which meant I heard a lot of reggae growing up. I sang all my life. When I was 7, I was sort of drafted into the Metropolitan Opera which opened up music for me in a big way. I wanted to hear everything...al genres. My granduncle (is that a thing?) had a HUGE vinyl collection in the attic of our house. I used to sneak up there and listen to everything from Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, The Beatles, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin...Nat King Cole...The list goes on and on. I discovered Jimmy Hendrix/there was a guy in highschool that was really good at guitar so I started playing. I didn't really begin writing until my Junior year of college. I was at Carnegie Mellon's School of Drama...the focus was primarily on acting. A friend of mine showed me Garageband...I got hooked...I started writing music everyday. I think the biggest inspiration- what really got me writing was falling in love for the first time...and then my first heartbreak. Suddenly I had a lot to talk about. Can you describe your stage presence and live performance? I like to perform with a live band. I'm a big believer in analog instruments and musical ferocity. My music sounds like rnb pop on the record but it veers on the rock side of things when played live. “Buzz” is a great song! Can you tell us the meaning behind it? Lol well...its about getting fucked up lol. I wrote it about a time in my life when i was out partying all the time! I spent a lot of time heartbroken in my previous relationship and parties were my escape. My nights spent in an alternate/lifted state..wether that be because of the music, alcohol, whatever... What challenges did you face when writing this single and how did you overcome them? Absolutely none lol. I was fun as hell to write Buzz...and freeing. What makes you so passionate about music and how do you continue to feed that passion? Well music has always been tied together with love for me. I feel that love is very important and music is the best way that I can share that....as long as that remains true for me as a woman, as a person of color, as a millennial..as a human...I'll continue to make music.
