- Beau James Wilding Gives Us “The Dove”
Hailing from the South-Central coast of California, Beau James Wilding is a solo artist whose musical prowess has been shaped by diverse influences, spanning from punk and blues to jazz and traditional music. Wilding's journey as a musician started at the tender age of fifteen, with his passion for songwriting and guitar playing blossoming over the years. A life-altering event at eighteen, when he was rendered "legally blind" due to disease, propelled Wilding's relationship with music to new heights, transforming it into a spiritual practice. Wilding's latest release, "The Dove," is a testament to his ability to craft enthralling musical experiences. This enchanting track masterfully merges a Mediterranean guitar style, resounding violins, and evocative grungy vocals to create a unique, multi-dimensional sound. The song is an homage to various genres and inspirations, encapsulating a harmonious fusion of rhythmic guitars, mellifluous strings, and alluring vocal lines that captivate listeners from the first note. In "The Dove," Wilding explores embracing life's perceived imperfections and transforming them into a work of art. Inspired by his father's significant brain injury, Wilding's message resonates with listeners as it delves into the universal human experience of living with imperfect bodies and the beauty of allowing those imperfections to tell one's unique and magical story. In addition to the song's musical and lyrical prowess, "The Dove" also stands out due to its exceptional production quality. The track's sonic landscape is finely crafted, ensuring that each instrument and vocal element is given ample space to breathe while still maintaining a cohesive and immersive listening experience. This attention to detail elevates "The Dove" from a mere composition to a sonic masterpiece, demonstrating Wilding's commitment to his craft. As Beau James Wilding prepares to release his album "seeing i god" in April 2023, this talented musician's future appears incredibly bright. With "The Dove" as an indication of the depth, emotion, and ingenuity that can be expected from his forthcoming album, it is evident that Wilding is on a trajectory that will undoubtedly propel him to the upper echelons of the music world. Roll with this one; out everywhere. Welcome to BuzzMusic Beau James Wilding. Cheers to your latest vibes, “The Dove” In "The Dove," the intricate guitar work and sweeping strings play a significant role in the song's overall impact. How did you approach composing and arranging these elements, and what challenges did you encounter in achieving the desired balance between them? The song is about my father and his journey of recovery and rehabilitation after a significant stroke he encountered when I was five. It’s about my experience watching him struggle for the rest of his life to overcome this debilitating brain injury and his eventual death. My father was called “the Dove” in college because of his peaceful, calm demeanour. His lifelong close friend Bob who told me this, played violin. My father didn't play the violin but loved all music, including violin music. I often heard him playing Jay Unger’s Ashokan ‘Farewell’ on piano, as much as he could do given his condition. For that reason, and in homage to Bob, the violin felt right for the track. The violinist on the track, David Stone, is a classically trained violinist from Santa Barbara. He was in my band at the time, and so I asked him if he could play on the track. This part was largely improvised in the studio, with me coaching and encouraging David on what I wanted. The image I had was of a dove travelling through space on to its next adventure, which is how I see my father after having left this earthly realm. I remember telling David, “Don’t be afraid to get weird—think after ours and a couple of whiskies deep at the Scottish fiddler’s convention, think psychedelic dove in space!” The violin adds a great depth to the track, and I’m grateful he was willing to contribute his skills. The dirty electric guitar is meant to invoke a sense of life's grittiness, suffering and simultaneously the hard-edged determination to transcend it. I also wanted that deep feedback drone from the electric to pervade the whole track. I’m fascinated by drones and thought they would add to the rough eeriness of the whole composition. The engineer JP and I had many layers of electric guitar and violin, and it was a process to balance them all. The end goal was a feeling of build-up of intensity with a climax at the instrumental break before the last verse. JP and I meticulously went through each cut of violin and guitar, editing mistakes and foibles and weaving the many threads together to create the final tapestry. Throughout "The Dove," your grungy vocals contribute significantly to the emotive quality of the track. Can you share the process behind developing your distinct vocal style and how it complements the theme of embracing imperfections? From around fifteen, I wrote songs and dreamed of being a songwriter. But I always felt I wasn’t good enough to pursue my calling for some reason. I tried singing a couple of times but never quite felt comfortable with it. I thought my voice was weird and unpalatable, certainly not beautiful. In other words, imperfect for sure. It was when I found “weird” or different-sounding singers like Louis Armstrong, Tom Waits and the many strange and intense vocalists of the punk rock world that I began to feel a sense of licensure to be myself. To name a few, Henry Rollins, Glen Danzig, Bobby Sox, Ian Curtis and Steve Ignorant, amongst others. Blind Willie Johnson and Ronnie Drew were also a major inspirations. I figured I would accept my so-called imperfect voice, take pleasure in my weirdness, push it as far as I could push it and see where that took me. I had heard that Tom Waits used to scream into a pillow to give his voice the rough quality that it has, so I started doing that, and it seemed to help loosen me up. I became known for my screaming pre-rehearsal. I remember screaming a bit in the studio when recording this record. There was a time in which I had to push the roughness and the weirdness to the extreme to experiment and feel out what was right for me. The first record, “Violet of the Pacific,” is an example of me pushing my voice way too far, so much that it is painful. But I may not have gotten to the point I am now without experimenting with the extremes. A note of interest on the vocals for “The Dove”; this was a tough song for me to sing. I wanted to convey a sense of immediacy, of aggressive determination as well as a sense of theatricality. That balance was difficult to achieve. My original idea was to speak some parts and sing others. JP suggested that I do both and add an additional whisper track. So, the vocals blend sung, whispered and spoken words. The lyrics in "The Dove" evoke a sense of vulnerability and self-acceptance. Can you discuss any personal experiences or emotions that inspired these lyrics and how you channelled them into the songwriting process? As stated, the song was inspired by my father, who had a disability when I was five. But I have also had my own lived experience with a disability as I am “legally blind.” My wife is completely blind, and in my other job, I work to help support the disability community here in California, so disability touches my life. Something I’m stating without stating in the song is that we all have perceived flaws, perceived imperfections, whether you have a bona fide “disability” or not. I see a lot of separation between the disabled and non-disabled communities, with the non-disabled folks often treating us as unfortunate others. But disability is a natural part of the human experience. If you live long enough, you will likely age into some type of disability. This relates to my overall ethos. We are all part of one human family, one beautiful human rainbow. With no true state of perfection attainable, how could a state of imperfection even exist? The only state imperfection can exist is in the context of comparison. In the first verse, I am playing with the spiritual concept that one chooses their existence, chooses the form they will inhabit before birth to help the world. A friend once said that my father came to this world in the form he did to show us all how loving presence is our most valuable offering. Hence the lines “I will break my back and tear out my eyes/And still prove I am love through majestic flight”. In the second verse, I am discussing growth. This gnarled and twisted process is self-improvement, and emphasizing that the at-times the flashy state of supposed perfection is not always what is of highest value: “Though my thorns be mangled/Petals droop like heavy sighs/It’s my quiet strength that abides and inspires life.” In other words, it’s not always the surface-level expressions of beauty that are most valuable for one to aspire to. And the conclusion “Man said to God/through the broken body you gave me I have learned/I’m love not form/boundless, beyond time” is the transcending, the equanimity, the sense of personal triumph, joy and connection that comes from living true to one’s own personal path. Considering the beautiful blend of various genres and inspirations in "The Dove," can you share some of the key artists or musical influences that shaped this unique sound and how their impact is reflected in the track? In “The Dove,” as with many other tracks on the album, I’m attempting to fuse some elements of 80s hardcore punk with elements of Irish traditional music and traditional folk music, more broadly speaking. Some touchstones of the punk world would be Black Flag, particularly the guitar work of Greg Ginn and Henry Rollin’s mid-career vocals—also, the experimental punk of the Flesh Eaters and the amazing guitar playing of Jay Mascis. A life-changing record for me was the Planxty self-titled/”black album,” which inspired some of the acoustic tones and the use of the bodhran. I was listening to a lot of Lankum, in particular, “Cold Old Fire” and “Between the Earth and Sky,” while recording the record. I’d come home from the studio, make the dinner and throw one of those on the turntable and get lost in all the layered, textural tones that are swimming about together, building and taunting one another until a roaring wave-like crescendo is reached. I wanted to create something like that in my unique sphere, using my unique musical toolbox and aesthetic. Around the time that I composed the Dove, I had just begun listening to Rodrigo y Gabriella. There was also a record on my turntable pretty regularly at that time, which is a live, duelling piano recording of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock in which they play with some improvised flamenco motifs such as clapping, finger-snapping and the Andalusian cadence. So that “Spanish” style, which to me is so energetic, eerie and beautiful, was also on my mind. The chord progression for “The Dove” is a reverse Andalusian cadence. With the upcoming release of your album "seeing i god" and the success of "The Dove," what are your aspirations for the future, both as an artist and in terms of the messages and themes you hope to explore in your forthcoming projects? I hope to keep building the project and adding to the snowball! My live sound partner Tom Kenny and I are taking off to Ireland and will be playing gigs there. (Shameless plug, if anyone in Ireland wants to set up a gig, we’ll be there from 4/30 – 5/15! Let me know if you are interested!) My goal is to continue to develop interest in my home region on the central coast in California and I’d love to make some connections in the Pacific Northwest after that. I’d like to play more festivals, get some non-commercial radio exposure, and just keep marching forward to the next right thing! If it sounds like fun, we’ll probably do it. As far as themes, determination, being true to one’s self, individuation, the creative process, studying the self, the human experience and breaking down boundaries between people to find greater connection are all lyrical themes I think I could explore for quite a long time! What excites me the most musically is making something that sounds at once ancient and modern, natural and industrial. That clash has become how we live. The oil derricks in the middle of the beautiful Pacific you can see if you walk out my front door are an example. So I want to keep listening to the oldest folk music, moshing to the weirdest rock n’ roll, finding a way to fuse a feeling of ancient mystery with edgy modernity, and let passion flower and flail to its greatest potential! - Sister Swire’s “She’s Fun” Takes Us Into A Theatrical Craze Of Neurosis And Paranoia
Sister Swire’s female-led rock band is a spirited group that harmonized pop, punk, and folk influences to create a heavy-hitting and edgy force that challenges its listener to its wittyful sentiments. A dynamic group led by a talented performative artist, Sarah Swire. Sarah’s background is steeped in diverse artistic accolades not limited to her musicianship. Along with her title as a singer/songwriter, she is an actor, choreographer, and theatrical performance artist. She uses her diverse talents and experience to incorporate theatrical undertones into her songwriting discography. Upon the release of Sister Swire’s self-titled studio album, the dynamic “She’s Fun” is a record that features in this new body of work—produced by the Canadian musician and producer Joel Plaskett. Sister Swire touches on their new album stating, “The album speaks to fans of classic rock & pop with punk & theatrical undertones, but from a narrative perspective, the album speaks particularly to those who have struggled with addiction, obsession, anxiety, paranoia and the dangerous coping mechanisms that lead to an uncanny duality in personality. It’s a study of guilt for how one's behaviour affects their community, world, and love for themselves.” When listening to the song, you are immediately immersed in the presented theme's chaotic, paranoid, and obsessive aural dramatization. Sister Swire achieves just that. Lyrically, you’re taken aback into the mind of a paranoid and anxious state of chaos. Singing with exhilarating force, this engulfs the listener into a neurotic world of someone caught between the world of guilt brought on by the isolation of a dissociative tendency, attempting to keep the chaos at bay. Dive into the "She's Fun" chaos, available everywhere now. Welcome to BuzzMusic Sister Swire, and congratulations on your latest release, "She's Fun." There is a distinct evocation of a paranoid, anxious, obsessive state in the song, both lyrically speaking and in its production. Is this what you’re imagining mentally in a narrative sense? Oh yeah, 100p. Like, I’m crucially tired of lethargic, sad songs. I self-medicate with music, and they seem to make everything worse. I know there’s evocative sensuality in vulnerable truths and fragile voices, but that's not how I feel. I articulate my emotions to my peers and therapists to be comprehensible and tolerable, but the true nature of my thoughts is violent and bonkers. And Sister Swire is an opportunity to channel the obtuseness of my impulses that Sarah Swire monitors to be socially graceful. Cameron Reed (electric guitar), Nicholas Posthumus (bass) and Lawrence Libor (drums) arranged for this song in a way that makes it feel like a real bloody spit take. I love them dearly. They are geniuses. This album is what it is because of their compassion and artistry. Can you share the creative process in an intense emotive experience such as the one in “She’s Fun?" In the timeline of my heart, I was waking up every morning at 4:30 am full of rage, going into a trance and screaming at people who weren’t there. For hours. Then I’d get a coffee, make it worse, and deepen my unhealthy codependency with my tarot deck. But in practice, back in 2020, I flipped through a thesaurus, slapped my finger down 3 times, and made a story out of the chaotic constellation of terms. It was on point with my misery. And I think that book permitted me to take the screaming away from the mirror and in front of people. What’s it like working with Joel in the studio? I’ve had the privilege of working with many brilliant artists, but no one is as incredible and unique as Joel Plaskett. I’m also a choreographer, and his relationship to sound feels more like a dancer improvising than a musician gear-shifting between systems & techniques. Everything moves, in listening, in playing. The parts that touch strings generate sound, but from what I can tell, the rest of his body is just electric intuition. It’s…unbelievable to watch. There’s something spooky about analogue spaces. The machines become player 2, and you must bend to its humour. And for that reason, there’s almost less work to be done; choices are made for you. In the infinity of a high-fidelity digital space, the magnitude of choice casts such a wide net of options that ideas initiate from a basic place to ground yourself in the decision-making process. In these analogue spaces, control is relinquished to these unpredictable, invisible, separate imaginations. And you work together. We both enjoy a podcast called Weird Studies - one of the hosts, JF Martel, once said about the limitation of a rhyme scheme, “You work with it to tease out symbolic correspondences.” Which I think also applies to Joel and Thomas Stajcer’s studio, Fang Recording. This is a very raw and honest look at addiction; if you’re comfortable sharing, how have your life experiences led to the creation of this album? I had a weird out-of-body experience that let me view ‘My Addict’ as separate from myself. I wouldn’t be here if I hadn't. That, and some unbelievable friends who were brave enough to tell me my whiskey breath and snake eyes at 11 am ‘weren’t good enough.’ It’s changed my view on reality and, consequently, art. I am in deep & constant surrender to something larger than myself. A huge struggle for addicts is the inability to identify their true selves outside the addiction agenda. Or as a multitude. Currently, my addict and I ‘co-exist’ as a sort of host/parasite situation LOL, and in so many ways, it is Sister Swire. I’m letting it talk so the dynamic feels playful instead of powerless. Also, alcohol and drugs made me brave. It taught me how to argue; it offered me the confidence and lucidity to articulate my weirdest and most passionate opinions. I needed both experiences: rock bottom and its slow recovery. I know that’s not true for everyone, but it is why I am making music now. What would you like your listeners to know about your WHY as musicians? At a fundamental level, what inspires you to do what you do? I don’t know. I truly don’t. I get a ‘funny feeling,’ and I act on it. I’ve been doing that since I was a child. And if I carve the time & space to flow it out, really cool things happen. I could try and articulate it better, but it would feel disingenuous. It’s just a simple, subtle, funny feeling. I think most musicians would say the same. Instagram Twitter

How did you develop the song's idea, and what was it like working with Wes Mack and Dan Swinimer? Hey Friends! Thank you for the warm welcome and for having me! Much appreciated! “Bleed Country” was produced by Dan Swinimer in Vancouver, BC. I wrote this song over a Zoom call during the pandemic, and there’s nothing like this on the radio right now in Canadian country music, and I’m pumped to release it! I think it's my best work yet! It was a very special and meaningful songwriting experience working with the incredibly talented Wes Mack and Dan Swinimer on this song. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it! As far as fitting into the current landscape of Canadian country music, I sincerely am not concerned or thinking about that. I'm not looking to copy or sound like anyone but me. Your career has been on an upward trajectory with multiple No.1 tracks on Sirius XM's Top of The Country and several CMA Ontario nominations. I think there are a lot of artists out there “playing house” and pretending to “be an artist” when that never carries you. I am who I am and am very proud of my accomplishments. If I continue to work on myself, I will always be proud of my work. I compete with no one but myself. Looking ahead to the future, what can fans expect from David Boyd Janes in the coming months and years? - Mauricio Alexandro Lopez Digs Deep With 'EYEr'
Mauricio Alexandro Lopez, a singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer from Tracy, CA, has released his first musical project under his name, titled 'EYEr' EP. Raised in a family passionate about music, Mauricio grew up listening to various genres, from mariachi to West Coast Hip Hop. Eminem's performance in 8 Mile inspired him to write raps on napkins and notepads at 12. After studying at a community college for a few semesters, he moved to Los Angeles with his friends to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Mauricio's journey in Southern California helped him gain experience in different fields, including audio engineering and songwriting. He worked alongside his brother Aaron Lopez, recording groups and solo acts all over California, and became a formidable producer. Presently, he is a student and teacher of music and shares his journey with others through his podcast 'EP Plug Me In,' which streams on Spotify. With 'EYEr' EP, Mauricio aims to showcase his Mexican American experience and perspective and break away from the stereotypes associated with Latin music. The EP opens with "VIVA," a track that reflects Mauricio's heritage and roots. The lyrics pay tribute to his Mexican father, native Arizonian mother, and Texas influences, blending different sounds and cultures to create a unique mix. The song's chorus captures the EP's essence, showing that Mexicans can have a place in music without adopting well-known stereotypes of Latin acts. "The Mirror Doesn't Lie" follows with an introspective tone, reflecting on the struggles and hardships of growing up in certain areas. The song is a call to action to acknowledge injustices and strive for progress. The lyrics are poignant, powerful, and reflective, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and acceptance. "What Could Be" is a soulful track that delves into uncertainty and questioning oneself. The lyrics express a longing for something out of reach, and the hook adds a layer of vulnerability to the track. The melody is soothing, and the instrumentation complements the lyrics, making the song stand out on the EP. The EP concludes with "Do Eye Exist?" a track that features an introspective and melancholic tone. The lyrics express a sense of confusion and existential crisis, with Mauricio searching for answers to unanswerable questions. The refrain and chorus are emotive and powerful, and the verses glimpse Mauricio's personal struggles and experiences. 'EYEr' EP is a testament to Mauricio's talent and creativity. The EP blends different sounds and cultures, showcasing Mauricio's ability to tell his story through music. The lyrics are introspective, reflective, and poignant, providing a glimpse into Mauricio's experiences and struggles. The EP is an impressive debut and leaves listeners wanting more. Be sure to give this one a listen; out everywhere. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Mauricio Alexandro Lopez; congrats on representing your roots on your “EYEr” EP. The title of your debut EP, "EYEr," is quite intriguing. Can you tell us a little about its meaning and how it relates to your personal and musical journey? “EYEr” is another word for “seeker,” “truth seeker,” or “way seeker.” It relates to my personal search for identity. I wanted to create a conversation piece to provide a perspective in a lane that isn’t too common sonically, the Mexican American perspective. “EYEr" represents that journey beginning because every track aims to let you into my perspective. In my little Rorschach Test, I hold up a picture, and what do you see? Perspective is paramount; the name “EYEr” helps me remember that. Where I am at musically is blending Hip Hop and R&B in the form of monologues.” The lyrics in "VIVA" vividly depict your Mexican American experience and perspective. Can you articulate how your heritage influences your music and the message you hope to convey through your lyrics? “VIVA is inspired loosely by Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa. My heritage is connected to military history on both my American and Mexican sides, so I’m constantly caught in the middle of each identity. I took a History of Mexico class in college taught by a white man ironically and felt a need to convey myself as one with my heritage. I learned in the class that Spanish friar Diego de Landa burned, by his own account, 27 priceless Maya screen fold manuscripts in front of the church in the 4,000-year-old town of Maní, on the Yucatan peninsula, on the evening of July 12th, 1562. It was an attempt to erase the memory of their gods and ancient beliefs in the minds of the Maya people. July 12th is my birthday, another coincidence. As the story ended there for such priceless historical events, a new chapter began in my life as another writer of that history. “VIVA” was a fun way to say I'm like a new Revolutionary coming out of nowhere, musically.” "The Mirror Doesn’t Lie" touches on themes of identity and societal pressures. How important is it for you to use your music as a platform to address these issues and connect with your audience on a deeper level? “It’s the most important point of the record. “The Mirror Doesn’t Lie” scared me when I wrote it. I knew the history of African Americans more than I knew my own by Elementary School. I heard the “N” word frequently said by many who weren’t Black throughout my life. I have been called “White Washed” for not being Mexican enough, but what about my people being “Black-Washed?” That's a huge question I don’t think many people think about. Regardless of what culture you identify with the most, when you look in the mirror, you are who you are inside a long list of ancestry. “The Mirror Doesn’t Lie” is an absolute. Is there a difference between who you identify as and who your ancestors say you are? Excerpts from Prestigious Director Guillermo Del Toro and Actor John Leguizamo paint two sides of the current Latino coin. Guillermo says we need to come together because we are subjected to division amongst each other. John lists the uncredited history of inventions we are responsible for as Latin people. They use their platform to inform, so I shall do the same.” "Do eye Exist?" explores existential questions and the search for answers. Can you share with us some of the personal experiences or challenges that inspired this song and how it fits within the context of the EP as a whole? “DO eye Exist?” was inspired by going down the rabbit hole of TikTok conspiracy theory videos about The Simulation, The End Times, Past Civilization and the popularization of identity diversity. One thing came to mind if the world were to end, how many of us would be truly ready? Are we ready in this world where everything is a conspiracy and we can’t agree on our beliefs? In “What Could Be,” I speak of the Uvalde School shooting where children lost their lives. Will these events lead to a disarming of the nation? I begin asking various questions in the 3rd verse, can you find fresh water? Can you grow your food? Can you mediate your mental and physical health long enough to survive and help others? Can you find and operate a firearm? At that moment, it won’t matter who is more Mexican, black or white. You’ll be thirsty, hungry and scared. I close the track with an excerpt from Jordan Peterson, who eloquently drives the point home of us as a nation being so focused on owning our identities we lack an awareness of being “one” with each other. Myself included. You are ultimately asking for Hell on Earth. Super deep, yes, but with your attention, I plan on using my voice for all those thoughts we’re scared to discuss. That’s the EP’s purpose.” With the release of "EYEr," you've proven yourself a formidable producer, songwriter, and rapper. What can we expect from you in the future, both musically and creatively? Do you have any upcoming projects or collaborations that you're excited to share with your fans? “I am releasing music videos for the “EYEr” EP in May. You can find that on my Youtube Channel under my full name, “Mauricio Alexandro Lopez.” I plan on expanding this story of my Mexican American perspective with another collection by Summer. As well as another collection of R&B and POP music outside of this theme. Consistency is my only focus. I am excited to share if you want honest writing and something with substance. Blessings and Love. VIVA” Instagram TikTok

I'm a fan of 90's House and today's EDM. I considered what I liked about the past in terms of production and merged it with what I like about today's productions. Welcome, Gina D'Soto! Cheers to your freedom of expression on “Hide,” which presents an intoxicating mix of genre influences. Can you share the inspiration behind incorporating these distinct styles into the song and how they helped shape its unique sound? Thank you so much for the support! Yes, so much mix of styles and ideas...The first thing that came to mind was the lyrics; funny enough, I thought of it as Spanish and English... Most of the time, I think of things in "Spanglish" since I have to speak with people from Hispanic and/or English backgrounds, so I wanted to have both languages in the song as it speaks to both audiences. Originally the song was written as a mix of salsa, bossa, pop, jazz, and R&B; We added the rap or hip-hop part later. In live sessions or concerts, we like to keep it with this sonority, but for the release, we decided to add some electronic elements so it will speak to people from my generation. In "Hide," you explore themes of vulnerability and desire, evoking a sense of intimacy and connection. Can you tell us about your personal experiences or emotions that inspired these themes and how they contributed to the creation of the lyrics? I wanted to create something intimate that recreates the playful part of the beginning of a relationship. We all have experienced the feeling of the first 3-5 months with someone, and I believe it’s a beautiful thing to talk about and explore in songs and music in general. When I talked to Maky about writing the rap part of the song, I explained all these ideas to him and gave him complete freedom to create from his experience based on this topic. In "Hide," you encourage listeners to embrace the present. As an artist, how do you cultivate this mindset in your own life, and how has it influenced your creative and personal growth? As an artist, I believe in living the "today" and enjoying everything life offers. I have the mindset of creating the best day for me. This has helped me tremendously. Not worrying about the past because that can not be changed, and embracing the future as a way of keeping moving. Every day is different, so we should treat each one as a gift and a way to be the best versions of ourselves. Throughout "Hide," your powerful voice and captivating vocal arrangements are fully displayed. Can you describe the process of developing and refining your vocal technique and how it has evolved since your early days at the Manuel Saumell and Amadeo Roldan Music Conservatory? So when I started singing, I didn’t know how to sing and what was best for my voice because the music school in Cuba doesn’t have a voice curriculum for jazz or pop, only classical. Many of the singers I know are self-taught, which is incredible but also difficult. I started singing with friends and a few musicians that called me for gigs, and honestly, looking back, I feel proud of myself for doing such a demanding and challenging thing. When I moved to Canada and started studying Jazz Voice, I really saw the difference, and of course, after 3 years and lots of training, practice, and trial and error, I developed into the vocalist I'm today. It was definitely not easy, but so much worth it; my voice is so different, and my approach to singing has changed completely. Having a teacher/vocal coach does wonders, not only as a vocalist but also as a musician. "Hide" will undoubtedly resonate with listeners worldwide, showcasing your immense talent as a singer-songwriter and composer. As you look to the future, how do you envision your musical journey evolving, and what can fans expect from your upcoming projects? Thank you so much! I hope it resonates with people all over. One of my goals is to bring elements from my culture that haven't been showcased in a pop or R&B type of sonority. Putting out all this musical information and creating a long-lasting body of work that can resonate with younger generations, especially Cuba ( where I'm from), help them see another side of our culture. Fans can expect a lot of amazing sounds in terms of vocals and production and maybe an EP very soon. I'm confident they'll love it. Instagram

Joel's mellifluous voice effortlessly conveys the raw emotions expressed in the lyrics, while the underlying beat and harmonies create an ethereal soundscape that transports listeners to another realm. The song's structure ebbs and flows, reflecting the internal conflict in the lyrics and culminating in a powerful, introspective crescendo. "borealis" is a stunning testament to Joel David's growth as a singer, songwriter, and producer. The track showcases his ability to weave emotive and evocative narratives through lyrics and music, solidifying his status as a formidable force in the r&b and pop realms. As listeners immerse themselves in the lush sonic landscape of "borealis," they will no doubt be eagerly anticipating what this promising artist has in store for the future. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Joel David. Congrats on letting it all out on "borealis" where you explore themes of longing and self-discovery. How did the concept for this song emerge, and what specific experiences or emotions inspired you to craft these poignant lyrics? “borealis” is, on the surface, a song about wanting to see the northern lights. I hope to cross off this on my life bucket list someday. Unfortunately, people scout too many places to see the lights and sometimes never find them. On the other hand, some people not looking for the lights might see them from an airplane or somewhere where they aren’t typically seen. The central emotion of the track stems from the single idea: “Am I chasing something I can’t find?” I only have a lifetime to find the things I desire, but what if they are out of my reach? What if I spend a lot of time searching for something that isn’t there? The numerous, looming questions throughout these lyrics mirror the echo chamber in my heart. Through writing this track, I have accepted that the grass may be greener on the other side; there will be things in life that we don’t have and may never have. It’s never wrong to crave these things. These feelings are important and unique to each of us. We all have deep and meaningful desires and aspirations that drive us. Longing for experiences gives our lives purpose. As the lyrics state, I can “create my own reality if I’m willing to make the move.” The instrumentation in "borealis" is a fascinating blend of r&b and pop influences. Can you elaborate on your creative process for choosing and arranging the various elements to complement the song's themes and lyrics? I knew from the start that I wanted a clock ticking in the background of this track. This is an important piece representing a countdown—an existential timer, if you want to call it that. I only have a lifetime to find the things I desire, but what if they are things that I can’t find? What if I’m expending time on a lost cause or dead end? As for other production elements, I knew I wanted strong percussiveness and heavy bass. I’ve always attributed this to what the northern lights would sound like. One of my personal playlists on Spotify is called “aurora borealis” and pins down tracks that also mimic this sound. These beats and basses wonderfully complement the darkness and tone of the song as a whole. The vocal performance in "borealis" is captivating, with your voice effortlessly conveying the raw emotions expressed in the lyrics. How did you approach this particular vocal delivery, and were there any challenges you faced while recording? The vocal delivery on this track is meant to convey the expression of hopefulness yet hopelessness. As the song builds into a climax, the questions are meant to become harsher, louder, and more desperate. This was, surprisingly, the most effortless vocal performance on my album. I had expected the delivery to take a lot longer on this track, but it flowed out of me so easily. I guess that because of how strongly the lyrics of this song resonate with me personally, it was an unexpectedly smooth recording session. As for general challenges, I recorded this album in my apartment. Managing was tricky, but I built a PVC pipe vocal booth to record. It’s all covered with blankets and currently sitting in my living room. The initial challenge of figuring out the best way to record was very difficult. “fabricate” was recorded without any vocal treatment, and “Turn to dust” was recorded in a treated closet. However, both had shortcomings in vocal quality. I knew I needed a more substantial area to record that didn’t involve my mic occasionally picking up outside noises like neighbours slamming their front door. Once I put this booth together, I knew I finally had something to work with. “borealis” was the second track I recorded in the homemade booth and the fourth one from the album. When finished with the vocals, I knew the booth would be a great recording setting for the remaining tracks on the record. "borealis" is just one of the many tracks on your album "Everything Is Just Imagination." Can you discuss this song's role in the album's overall narrative and how it contributes to the broader themes you explore throughout the record? I specifically chose “borealis” as the first full-length track on my album to help establish an overall tone. As my record focuses on love, longing, and change, “borealis” begins covering all these grounds. The borealis is loved from a distance and longed for, and a change is needed to reach it. Further, the lyrics in the track open up the conversation for more than just the northern lights. By stating, “Can I crave what I don’t have and still not feel my life’s imbalance? You’re the only thing I’m longing for, but is it you or the borealis?”, I can convey the fight for balance in a variety of different areas in life. The longing for love, for example, is seen in “fabricate.” In that track, the lyrics are about being dangerously close to the pure love that isn’t artificial. In the “waiting room,” the desire for the future is contemplated with a focus on the necessities, yet redundancies of both change and stagnancy. In the outro of “borealis,” the fight for balance in these aspects of life is established through what I have and need. The track finishes with a dark and bass-heavy cycle of spoken word, “seeing, falling for it, fighting for it, got it, need it, see it.” Given the powerful impact of "borealis" on your listeners, what can we expect from your future musical endeavours? Are there any specific themes, styles, or artistic collaborations you want to explore in your upcoming projects? A few of my current musical inspirations are Tinashe, Summer Walker, and Kehlani. I would love to create genre-bending work that fuses together r&b, pop, and trap with a jazz influence. As of the near future, I’m interested in collaborating with artists that embody these artists and these styles. I may explore themes of self-discovery, self-love, and confidence later. I also have a passion for music production, mixing, and mastering. I’d love to explore these endeavours with other passionate musicians to grow my connections and overall scope/knowledge of the industry. I could also feel my songwriting ability strengthening across the creation of this record. I hope to explore that area of my mind and write lyrics that provoke emotion among my listeners. Finally, I’m also interested in performing live. It isn’t something I’ve ever done before, but I’d love to establish myself in that area sometime in the future. Instagram TikTok
