- New Single “Swear To God” by Mighty Tortuga Provides a Moment of Escapism
Mighty Tortuga is delivering authentic dream-rock from Connecticut. They combine nostalgic sounds of the ’90s, emo power punk-pop and relatable, accessible themes. Instrumentally throughout “Swear To God” there’s something of a punk-rock vibe to the track at first, that electric guitar riff is simple yet effective – memorable and contrasting enough to create a dynamic with everything else. Following this, Mighty Tortuga injects a brief yet rhythmically effective melody and story-line that redirects the experience. That vocal has more of a dreamy-rock tone and style about it during the smoother moments. “Swear To God’s” subject matter is also notably thoughtful, offering personal depth and reflection that feels way more singer-songwriter-like than anything simply designed as an anthem to entertain. All of these qualities work in unison to give Mighty Tortuga a sound and approach that’s all their own right now. “Swear To God” may sound familiar and nostalgic from afar, but what you find within is something well worth venturing into more than a couple of times. The lyrics of this three-minute hit intrigue and fascinate right the way through. With each new listen, they connect a little more intensely. An impressive single and a genuine, organic style of writing and expression. Check out “Swear To God” here and read more with Mighty Tortuga below! Welcome to BuzzMusic Mighty Tortuga! We’re really happy to be featuring your song “Swear To God”. It’s very catchy, but also incorporates an integral message within. Can you explain to our readers the truth that is embedded within the track? Thanks so much for sitting down with us! I think the message within the track is subjective. It is always interesting to see the different theories our fans have when it comes to the lyrics of our songs, and I typically like to keep them guessing. What I will say about “Swear to God,” is that it deals with how two individuals work through trust issues with one another. We’re always curious to learn more about how bands form! How did Mighty Tortuga officially come to fruition? Mighty Tortuga was formed in the Summer of 2018 stemming from a group of songs written one night in a basement. We all came from other bands working to formulate something fresh and exciting for a scene that is currently saturated by pop-punk. The “emo dream rock” vibe of the band is something we all wanted to dabble into, and so far we have had amazing response on tour! Who has had the biggest influence on your life musically thus far? Can you describe the impact this particular individual has had in terms of your new song “Swear To God”? Since we produce and record our own records, I would say our amazing group of friends, family, and fans have the largest impact on our songs. Every experience we’ve had thus far forms the experiences we have now. That is all thanks to the support we get from them every single day. What are some of your ultimate goals as a group? Are any of these goals currently being put into place/being worked on? Collectively, our goal as a group is to keep creating music we love, playing it as much as we can, and most importantly–supporting each other. We want to make sure every local band gets the recognition they deserve, so we can all grow together. We are currently in the studio working on our second record with the goal of putting out the best songs we possibly can. No sign of slowing down any time soon, and we are really excited about the direction of these new songs. It was great having you here on BuzzMusic! Tell us more about what's next for you after this song release? We are currently out on the “Swear to God Tour” that runs until November 8th, ending in our Hometown of Hamden, CT with some amazing CT local bands. Also, as mentioned before, we have been heading in and out of the studio to wrap up our next record. Until then we have a few surprises coming, so keep your eyes peeled. Thanks for having us! - Exclusive Interview With Artist Voiyce on His New Music!
Welcome to BuzzMusic Voiyce! How did moving from Texarkana, Texas to Los Angeles, California develop who you are as an artist? How do the music scenes compare to one another? I could definitely say that the move had an impact on my development as an artist. It's like when I came to this environment it put me on a whole different level than I was in my hometown. I have gained so many fans since I've been here it's a blessing. The music scene here is very welcoming and supportive. The music scene in my hometown is full of great music artists men and women, I think the only difference is the location. I'm from a small town and LA area is gigantic so there are more opportunities out here I think that's the only difference. You've quickly gained an impressive catalog and fan base. With over 700k streams and close to 15k monthly Spotify listeners, what has been the biggest challenged you've faced while building your musical career? The biggest challenge I would say was to get my fanbase up and streams up on streaming platforms. It took a lot of hard work and consistency to build what I have now and to reach that number. Staying on it and never giving up is key, oh yea and investing in yourself is very crucial as well. You've accomplished so many impressive feats including opening for Chief Keef, Jim Jones, and Too $hort. What was the most memorable moment from these experiences? Lol, I would probably say Too $hort was one of the most memorable shows I've had. The crowd was hyped and very supportive not to mention the venue treated me like royalty it was an amazing experience. Also the groupies, yes the groupies or women fans of your technical lol. What can you tell us about your independent record label Rayne Records? Rayne Records is a powerhouse independent label that houses me and a few other phenomenal artists. I've been with Rayne about two years and I'm releasing my debut album "EVO" with Rayne Records. It's a great label to work with and get support from. We are more like a family than anything and that's what they build their foundation on. We are all close and support each other's crafts and genres. It's an amazing label to be a part of and I cant wait to see what the future holds. It was such a pleasure to talk to you about your music and achievements and share it with our BuzzMusic readers! Can you shed some light on your much-anticipated upcoming album "EVO"? What's the official release date for this project? There is no official release date right now for my highly anticipated album "EVO" but I can guarantee you when it drops firefighters are going to have their work cut out for them because all the fire that's going to be on there lol. This is one of my best projects yet to date and it's going to be a classic. - Mandi Crimmins is Back With an Incredible EP “Metanoia”
Mandi Crimmins is an unchained artist screaming her truth with her hyper-confessional music. Born in the Boston area, Mandi attended Berklee College of Music, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in Songwriting. She studied songwriting with top songwriters like Grammy award-winning artist Paula Cole, who become more like a mentor and friend. In 2019, Mandi was nominated in the New England Music Awards for “Pop Act of the Year” as well as a competitor in RADIO.COM’s “The Opening Act” to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. She has performed numerous shows, including Battle of the Bands in Boston, Paula Cole’s Songwriter Showcase at Berklee, and opening for country artist Randy Houser. Her brand new EP “Metanoia” is out now and available on all major streaming platforms. “Metanoia” is defined as “the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, self, or way of life.” Pouring through with precisely that nostalgic balance between passionate melodic delivery and absolute distortion and grit, “Lying To Myself” is a powerful song that utilizes contrast brilliantly and begins “Metanoia” with a powerful intro. Progressing from honest and open verses to an utterly enveloping and mighty hook section, “Lying To Myself” tips its hat to the original sounds of rock and metal, whilst holding close to that melodic aspect throughout. “Metanoia” introduces an increasing number of curve-balls and flickers of identity as it progresses. “You’re Still Here” hits with impact in the way that rock once did, way back when, and meanwhile, the vocals rain down spectacularly. Mandi Crimmins offers genuine angst, emotion, and a poetically thoughtful story-line that seeks and succeeds in connecting with even the most distant of listeners. “You’re Still Here” is a song that begs for you to play it on repeat. That quietly intense intro is superb, space and rasp presented in the performance paves the way awesomely towards the full-throttle vibrancy and unexpected warmth of later on. The song doesn’t drive with darkness in the way that metal does, rather it fuses a touch of that with something a little more blues-rock like. “Something’s Missing” follows on, a song with a quickly recognizable set-up and series of riffs. A classic alt-rock creative twang emerges, and all the while Mandi pour endless levels of passion and soul into the process as well as being consistently impressive in terms of musicianship. “Something’s Missing” is something of a stand-out for its unusually optimistic and bright aura. Lyrically and musically, even structurally, the song feels accessible and uplifting. There’s a level of hope and possibility to the song, it embraces the listener, it comforts them, and this shines brightly following the weight and hard-rock soul of what came before. “Ashes” finishes things up with a bang, conceptually interesting, emotionally appealing, and brilliantly progressive musically. The delicate piano begins the single and slowly builds with intense distortion and descending power chords. Mandi Crimmins’ vocals explode to create a hugely passionate moment of togetherness, presenting the ultimate anthem for fans to get lost within. A superb way to go out. Mandi Crimmins has clearly figured out and mastered her sound and style, and this EP makes for a strong introduction to that. We can’t wait to hear more! Listen to “Metanoia” here and read more in our exclusive interview below! Welcome back to BuzzMusic Mandi Crimmins! It’s such a pleasure to be chatting with you. You seem to be an artist that puts a substantial amount of thought into your lyrics! Who/what has inspired you to be the artist you are today? It’s so great to be back!! Yes, I do actually! Lyric writing is one of my favorite parts of the whole writing process. I grew up listening to music from artists who bared their souls. They wrote about the parts of life that weren’t so glamorous, but ones that everyone felt at one point or another. I always wanted to be an artist like that. My life hasn’t been all roses, and I know there are people out there who would benefit from me baring my own soul. Your new EP “Metanoia” is deeply personal. Is vulnerability something your fans can always expect from your music? Can you tell us about a particular song that required you to channel the most emotion? Haha…yes vulnerability is definitely something to get used to when it comes to my music. I find I create my best art when I’ve broken down every wall and I’m crying into my keyboard. Honestly, each song on Metanoia is incredibly emotional and personal, for very separate reasons. However, I’d have to say that the two most emotional tracks for me personally are “You’re Still Here” and “Something’s Missing”. When I wrote “You’re Still Here” I was in college and frankly severely depressed. I was in a toxic relationship and just couldn’t pull myself out of my depression. I wrote this song as a sort of haunted love song to my depression - addressing it like a real entity. “Something’s Missing” is written about a very specific person who was in my life and caused so much damage. Channeling the pure anger, pain, and resentment I felt into something beautiful was such an emotional journey for me. I cried writing it, and I cry listening to it every time - tears of relief! How do you personally feel about live performance? Would you say that you prefer the live performance aspect of music more over the writing/recording process? I love both so much! They are very different from one another, but I’d have to say I love the studio/writing process more. There’s something so beautiful when you make art out of pain. What predominant message was integrated within "Metanoia"? Well, when I read the definition for Metanoia, I knew it was the perfect box to place these songs in - it explained my message so clearly. Metanoia is defined as the journey of changing one's mind, heart, self, or way of life. Which is exactly what these songs represent - the journey of change. The album starts with me lifting a veil in “Lying to Myself” and actually seeing things for what they were, then the following three tracks document the difficult realities I faced when I did. I encourage listeners to start on the first track and progress through. It was great having you here on BuzzMusic! Tell us more about what's next for you artistically? Any shows in the near future to support to album?! Ahhh more music of course!! I’ve been writing so much lately, and it’s all music that’s been challenging me in the best ways possible - no comfort zones. I do have a few shows lined up for the EP release! One is my EP Release Show at the Middle East Club in Boston, MA on October 25th! The other is exciting as hell - I’ll be opening at the Bowery Electric in New York City on November 4th! - Catching up with Gerry Smoot!
Hey Gerry Smoot, welcome back! Great to be showcasing some of your new music on BuzzMusic! Tell us more about your personal upbringing within the music world? It's an honor to be back for another interview. Well as some people who follow me are aware that I was born and raised in a place called Owensboro, KY. The smooth jazz scene is not really huge in the area I was born in but I've taken a great interest to it after playing behind a great gospel jazz artist by the name of Ben Tankard. I was fortunate and blessed enough to play with that man at 14-15 years old at a concert in Louisville, KY. Anyway, after that very moment, I knew that I wanted to do smooth jazz. So I started listening to the various artists (including those who are/were in the traditional jazz era) from Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, George Duke, Jeff Lorber.....the list goes on and on. I am also a multi-instrumentalist. I started playing the keyboards at the age of 2, and tackled bass and drums around the age of 9. Do you believe that the way you intend to communicate your messages through your music is easily received by your listeners? Honestly, it varies. Some people are into it and some people are not. For those who appreciate smooth jazz then the answer is yes. There's a musical social media platform that I go to often and I get messages daily telling me that my music is great and want to hear more, or my music helps them when they feel depressed and their spirits get lifted after listening to a song, etc. Those types of messages are what encourages me to keep going. “The Inquirer" was an incredibly versatile and catchy track. Where did you draw the inspiration to create this particular type of sound? Well, it's funny how that song came about. In a local band I play with, we was in band rehearsal and I just started playing something just off the top of my head. And it sounded very different to what I normally do. So in the middle of just messing around, I turned on the video on my phone and started recording it. Now mind you I was messing around with that idea even before the previous album of My Musical Journey. I happened to go through my Dropbox one day and ran into it, and was like I need to add more to this song. Then the rest is history. How would you say that "The Inquirer" compares to the kind of music you curated when you first started out as an artist? As I stated in the last interview, I always set a goal to make my music better than my previous albums. So I think that album has progressed very far than my previous 2 albums. It seems like my sound is more mature than before. Do you prefer the more intimate recording process over live performance? How do you personally feel when you're performing your music live? I'm more of a recording guy, but I also love the energy of a live performance. That's honestly a hard question to answer. But if I had to choose one, it would have to be the intimate recording process. It was awesome to be able to present "The Inquirer" here on BuzzMusic! What do you think is next for you as an artist? Where do you hope to progress within the next couple of years? Well hopefully, my name spreads out to where anybody who's into smooth jazz or in the smooth jazz music industry themselves know who I am. What's next is I'm dropping another album somewhere in the spring or summer of 2020. I can't give out too many details on that just yet, but be on the lookout for it. Usually, I post on Instagram or Facebook what is to come next. And once I spread the word on what's to come, I'll make sure I'll let y' all know about it... facebook.com/gerrysmootofficial instagram.com/g_smoot twitter.com/GerrySmoot numberonemusic.com/gerrysmoot #BuzzMusic
- The Dead Licks Are Back With A Brand New Rock Anthem “Shapeshifter”
The Dead Licks is a contemporary/modern alt-rock band consisting of members Jack Grbac (guitar), Tom Inzinga (guitar, vocals), Jimmy Gallagher (drums) and Johnny McNamara (bass). They released their debut album "Stay Away from the Aliens" in 2018, and have garnered nothing but success since then. Their sound embodies true eclecticism in an alternative rock fashion. You're going to feel uplifted by their passion, and drawn to their dramatics. The overall musicality of their sound is what sets The Dead Licks apart in the rock music scene today. The Dead Licks much anticipated single "Shapeshifter" is out now and available on all major streaming platforms. “Shapeshifter” makes for a stunning example of the kind of passion and weight that The Dead Licks pour into their music. Balancing the classic intensity of Soundgarden, the music builds up and envelops listeners in an incredibly immersive and memorable way. It’s been a while since a rock band has lined up all of the elements to such an effective degree. That classic, hard-hitting escapism has finally returned while superb guitar work meets with incredibly appealing vocals that cut through the weight of the soundscape with relevant ease. The Dead Licks are insanely good at what they do. Rock has been hinting at making it’s return to the mainstream in recent years, but this release marks its official move from a hint to an absolute promise. Check out “Shapeshifter” here and read more below in our exclusive interview. Welcome back to BuzzMusic The Dead Licks! We love your nostalgic sound! Can you introduce the members of the group and tell us about how The Dead Licks came to fruition? Tom Inzinga - Vocals/Guitar Jimmy Gallagher - Drums Johnny Mac - Bass/Keys Jack Grbac - Guitar Our freshman year at the University of Dayton I sent an email to the campus recording studio asking if anybody wanted to jam or knew how to work anything… and Tom happened to be the only person to email me back. We later asked Tom’s old friend Jimmy if he wanted to play the drums, and then Johnny joined a year later on bass. We played gigs around campus and made our first album at school, until moving to Chicago in August of last year. -jack “Shapeshifter” is a completely captivating and versatile track. What was the writing/recording process like? Can you dive into some details about the lyrics? Shapeshifter was a song that took us a long time. It started with a riff that we basically wrote around. It’s a heavy song of ours, riddled with distortion. I think while writing this one I had the idea of someone who is manipulative. At some points your friend, and others your enemy. I think everyone can fall into this category at different times in life, which makes it interesting to think about and write about. A bit of a nod to the fact that not all things are black and white. How do you personally feel about live performance? Would you say that you prefer the live performance aspect of music more over the writing/recording process? I personally love both recording and playing live. It’s exciting to take songs from live performances and see how they transform in the studio, and vice versa. When we play live we try our best to replicate what’s been done on the recording, but we aren’t too hard on ourselves. The uncertainty is part of what makes it fun - Jack. What are some of your ultimate goals as a group? Are any of these goals currently being put into place/being worked on? From the time we started we just wanted to hang with our buds and play music. I think that’s still very much our mindset right now. We’d love to make a career out of this, which is hopefully the next chapter for us. We love traveling and playing out-of-town gigs, and we’re going to continue writing music that excites us. It was such a pleasure to feature your new music! What’s next for the band artistically? Thank you we really appreciate it! More songs & more shows! We’re writing a ton and planning to release a full length album...soon(ish). instagram.com/thedeadlicks facebook.com/thedeadlicks twitter.com/thedeadlicks #BuzzMusic
- Honeytiger Release Brand New LP “Brain On The Wall”
Vocalist and guitarist Isaac Clark teams up with drummer Josh Glauser to create the two-piece indie-rock outfit of Honeytiger. Hailing from Philadephia, Honeytiger delivers catchy alt-rock melodies with dark indie sensibilities. Their latest full LP 'Brain On The Wall' is out now and available on all major streaming platforms! Beginning with the immediately impactful “I Quit”, Honeytiger’s sound pours through with a nostalgic purity that seems all but missing from the modern indie-rock sound. There’s an anthem-like, near driving-ballad sort of aura to the song, particularly the vocal. It rises up from softness to intensity, and the soundscape effectively supports this, showcasing the progressing stages of the lyrics in a powerful and fitting way. While there’s an accessible and relatable quality to the sentiments, the next track titled “Dawdler” has taken to exploring these in an again classically rooted manner, giving the whole song a poetic undertone that intertwines beautifully with the developing power of the music. This kind of style can be found in varied fashions throughout the project. Always the drums and the guitars cascade in a refreshing and genuinely creative yet raw manner, which appeals for its realness, and reminds you that a live show is undoubtedly where things would really come alive. During “Point Breeze”, the leading voice grips you more and more, moving from delicate and nearly spoken word during the introduction, to ultimately passionate and just gritty enough to really present this story-line with genuine heart and struggle. “Sundrop” adds an element of brightness in terms of the musical mood. The melody captivates as a few notes rise up and fall back down to layout the personal story-line. A hint of mellow and lightness follows later and helps build an interesting structure. “South Philly Summertime” afterward leads with more entrancing riffs and quickly captures your affection for its fine balancing between the quick and the mellow. An easy favorite for the simple yet still huge hook section. The simplicity allows for creative freedoms with smooth guitar and punching vocals. “Ultraviolet Buzzing Machine” is another highlight for the contrast with the rest of the album. It brings something melancholic and powerful combined with the steady pace of the vocal creating something easily memorable and quite classic feeling. Again, the lyrics and the general vibe of the music seem to hit less intensely, but with a second listen you start to form those meaningful connections! “Piece of Cake” comes into the mix with a soulful guitar line. As the percussion sections move in, we’re graced with 4 minutes of indie-pop brilliance to take us further into this incredible project. “I’m Alright” features harmonically rich and emotional vocals to paint a soundscape in your mind, Honeytiger allows the listener to escape into an alternate reality and live in the music. “I’m Alright” changes the pace of the album, with light guitar strumming and a simple melody. The vocals are perfectly suiting the sentiments and light-hearted aura of this song. The musicianship on this project is consistently flawless, whether the moment is high energy or more of a subtle, intentional gathering of layers, this duo knows precisely how to bring about the right pace while still managing to impress. “Confinement Howl” has a simple yet addictive melody accompanied by intriguing lyrics and the minimalist strum of an acoustic guitar. Things begin on a strong foot and grow to be all the more immersive and musically wonderful as the song pours through. Easily worth a second listen before moving on, a stunning indie track with a beautiful sense of depth and a brilliant hook. “Robot” is another highlight, showing a more rock theme embedded within the musicianship of the track. The hypnotizing vocals quietly calm and entrance the listener, while even more deeply considerate and honest lyrics drive a concept through. You get so much clarity from this project as if these are the songs that had to be sung, the thoughts that had to be shared. It’s a classic playlist and not a moment has been wasted or included purely to fill a space. “Same Fears” undoubtedly stands out for its cinematic ambiance and the gritty nature of that driving rhythm. A blues-like scene is set, within which a simple yet captivating, poetic song works in a hypnotic fashion to envelop the listener and contrast hits hard as the hook falls into view. “Endless Somersault” brings the album to a sweet yet mellow finish. The silence that follows after the playlist is finished will absolutely encourage another listen. That vocal tone and the style of these songs offer a distinct thread throughout, mood-wise though there’s plenty of eclecticism at work, and for these reasons, the album makes for a wonderful playlist to escape within. A great way to go out, superb guitar work yet again and an overall enjoyable, entertaining piece of music and performance. Honeytiger’s sound as it stands today is easy to spot. There’s plenty of individuality in the approach, and just enough familiarity to really appeal to the rock outcasts who crave that original, authentic aura. This LP “Brain on the Wall” is a strong release start to finish. We can’t wait to hear more! Check out the album here and read more with Honeytiger below! Welcome to BuzzMusic Honeytiger! Can you briefly introduce yourselves to our readers? How did you go about choosing your stage name? Well, thanks! Isaac and Josh here from Honeytiger. We're a Philadelphia two-piece that plays rock music and are friends. We've just released our LP Brain On The Wall through the Philly DIY collective label goodhowareyou records and celebrated that with a record release party/show/party this past week. How was the production of your latest LP? Did your initial vision for the album end up executing as you thought it would? Our vision for the album is very close to what it ended up being. We recorded it in our friend Dan Taney's basement with my brother Jamie Clark as well and we set out to make an album that is very obviously two musicians making music rather than a super-produced and perfect record. We wanted to create something that we'd be able to play live with just the two of us, no loops, just musicians who when they make a mistake you hear it happen and that's ok. We're not(?) robots. "Piece Of Cake" was that type of track that pulsates with energy! What kind of vibe were you going for when curating the track? One part of our music that comes through on Piece Of Cake and has become somewhat of a signature for us is having a surprising dichotomy between the verse and chorus of our songs. A slower, sweeter, more serious chorus with a big riff verse. It's not a purposeful thing but has become part of the songwriting style that we've embraced. The whole LP is extremely versatile and impressive! What would you say is the track that holds the most emotion? What’s the story or inspiration behind this song? Thank you! It's tricky because all of these songs are so special to us, but I think Dawdler is the song that carries the most emotional weight and feels the closest thing to a love song that Honeytiger has released to-date. I hope that through the music and lyrics people feel the personal importance and story of that song, but generally, it's about someone feeling blue on their 27th birthday and that's ok. Thank you so much for chatting with us! Do you have any upcoming events or shows to tell us about? We have some things in the works, but we're so happy and proud to have released Brain On The Wall and it's available to stream everywhere and vinyl is available worldwide at https://honeytiger.bandcamp.com/album/brain-on-the-wall Keep connected with Honeytiger & the duo's music through their socials presented below! - Solo Electronic Project Haelphon Creates Captivating Soundscapes In New Album “Haelphonics”
Haelphon is the solo electronic project of Zach Ciampa, combining notable influences such as Avicii, Kygo, and Drake to create a sound that we’ve never heard before. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Haelphon uses honest songwriting and finely-calibrated production work to create soundscapes that are becoming known around the globe. Haelphon’s songs were featured in a variety of commercial projects for companies like Victoria’s Secret, Nordstrom, and Contiki. Active since 2017, Haelphone has developed an impressive catalog of versatile tracks. His debut album “Haelphonics” was released in September of 2019 and truly showcases Haelphon’s vocal and production abilities in a different light. The 12-track album “Haelphonics” is a documentation of the artist’s transition into early adulthood using authentically honest songwriting and layered soundscapes. “Black Death” is a complex and satisfying single that benefits hugely from the way that Haelphon’s voice meshes with itself to create a warm and satisfying pad of sound, which elevates the chorus to something quite delicious. The whole production of “Black Death” sounds hugely confident at every turn. This composition is also all about the vocals, and they are terrific. His voice is all his own, and“Black Death” is a warming and wonderful slice of pop that delights, has great dynamics, and is very well mixed and produced to complement his talents. Check out “Black Death” here and read more with Haelphon below! Hey Haelphon! We’re really enjoying bumping your album “Haelphonics”. What was the overall concept of this project? Thank you! This is actually my first interview and I’m so excited to be talking with y’all about the music. Simply put, Haelphonics is a look at what it’s like navigating through the stages of young adulthood. The album focuses a lot on topics such as the passage of time, mental health, and (of course) love. As I continued to develop the LP, I realized that having overarching specific themes didn’t really make sense to me, so I just went with the twelve tracks I felt would be most authentic to both myself and my listeners and here we are! “Black Death” is a great song! What can you tell us about the inspiration behind this particular song? Did it turn out the way you initially thought it would when you began creating it? I’m really thrilled that this is the song that stood out to you the most. It’s definitely one of my strongest works so far. “Black Death” is a candid look at growing substance use problems around the world, especially in the United States. A lot of mainstream music glorifies that kind of thing these days, which I personally hate. I lost a friend of mine from high school about four years ago due to an accidental fentanyl overdose, plus a family friend and some other classmates as a result of the opioid crisis. I wanted to write something in their memories. Black Death calls attention to the grittier side of what some seem to glamorize, taking a realistic look at things like the opioid crisis and highlighting the systems which allowed for that to happen in the first place. Honestly, the song turned out considerably better than I imagined it would. I wasn’t sure I was going to get the right tone that I wanted at first, but I layered out the first couple takes and thought to myself “wow, maybe I’m actually on to something here.” To me, it’s a fitting tribute to those that we’ve lost, and it’s one of the best-produced songs on the record. We know that you're a lover of integrating a variety of elements into your music. Would you ever incorporate contrasting genres into your music, or do you think it would ruin the type of sound you're attempting to reach? Oh totally. Being able to put fun twists in the music is one of the most exciting parts about me being the producer, the writer, AND the singer. My creative freedom is limitless. You can tell a Haelphon track is made by well, me, due to how I like to layer and mix things, but each track sounds solidly different from the last. Stylistically, I set no boundaries for genre-mashing and that helps a lot. Sometimes I just hear elements of something in my head, be it from rock or country, so I just toss it in the mix for the hell of it and hope for the best. Usually, it ends up sounding pretty cool. Listeners can look forward to a lot of that in my post-debut releases, particularly with my upcoming heartbreak song “The Author” which starts off significantly more acoustic than I usually do and then it follows with this huge electric guitar hook. Music is a lot like fashion these days—anything goes—so I might as well have fun with it. Your musical catalog is beyond impressive! How do you remain on track and motivated to continue to create music so consistently? Well, I’m glad it appears that way! I actually get really intense writer’s block for months at a time. When I’m on my game though, I can crank out new stuff like crazy. I will say, even if I’m struggling to write something new, the purpose behind my music keeps me going. My main objective is to just give my listeners a space where they can find comfort in music. You don’t have to have just graduated from college to listen to a song of mine like Cabin Fever. Outside the direct context in which the song was written, the message can still apply to anyone and that’s one of the key elements of my writing style. Of course, I’m writing a lot about what I’ve personally experienced, but my focus is on making sure those experiences translate to something realistic and relatable for others. It also helps that I write a lot of music for TV. When I’m stuck on something, I can just pull from the minute-long cues that I’ve already written and use them to start something new. A lot of times I’m creating five or six songs in a day for networks, so there are a lot of little pieces to reuse when they’re all finished. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us. What's the next move for you artistically? Do you have any events you’d like to talk about? It was my pleasure. Thank you for letting me gush about my album! The next move for me artistically is actually literal. In 2020, I’ll be relocating to New York City to get more involved in the music scene there and take what I’m doing to the next level. In the meantime, keep an eye on my pages because there are a lot of new songs on the way, as well as some show announcements for my remaining time here in Boston. Until next time! haelphon.com facebook.com/Haelphon instagram.com/haelphonmusic #BuzzMusic

Your latest track "Since five" has been on our radars, and it's an incredibly mellow and relaxing R&B track. What was the intended atmosphere you wanted to create for your listeners with this track? When you listen to this song you will hear a new mellow vibe that is great to relax and zone out too. Are you able to explain to our listeners what your main message is in "Since five"? There is no particular message, but I want the audience to know that people may try to throw shade on you, or start rumors, but you can zone it out and do you. And that’s how the track was made. As an R&B artist who incorporates a variety of alternative elements to your music, would you ever feel comfortable blending in elements from contrasting genres that you've never worked with before? I would absolutely use elements form other genres of music. I do it all the time when I produce tracks and when I write my songs. I think more producers should try to do that too. It really helps me understand how to make melodies and choose samples that blend well with my voice and compliment my flow. Is there a reason why you have never released your first recorded track? Do you ever see yourself sharing that track with your listeners? Lol. My first track was pretty bad. Let’s just say I’ve come a long way. We're highly anticipating your upcoming album release! Are you currently wrapping up the album, putting final touches on it? How do you feel about your near future release?! My album “Eastern Lake Drive” is out now on SoundCloud GO SHOW SOME LOVE!
