- New Music Monday: Shelby Olive Talks New Single "Spin Me Around"
Hey Shelby Olive! Welcome to BuzzMusic! What does your song “Spin Me Around” represent for you, and how did you come to write it? Spin Me Around tells the story of meeting someone for the first time and knowing they're going to bad for you but you want them anyway. There are all kinds of signs telling you to stop and turn around...but you're like "Nah, I'mma do this!" It's fun, it's flirty, but it's also a little bit cautious. It's the first track off of my new EP, Bad for Me, and the EP as a whole tells the story of a broken relationship from beginning to end. Spin Me Around is the launching pad for the rest of the record. Funny enough, it was actually the final song I wrote for the project. It just barely made it onto the EP! I had scheduled my final studio session before having the song finished (rookie mistake) and after multiple writing attempts that didn't pan out, I woke up at 5am the day of the session and started writing SOMETHING. I came up with the piano melody pretty quickly, but lyrics took longer. I ended up finishing the song in the car on the way over to the studio-- literally sending my husband voice memos of me singing while driving asking for his feedback on the lyrics. I totally procrastinated it and wasn't sure how it would pan out, but it's honestly one of my favorite ones on the record! I guess I work well under pressure! What’s the songwriting process like for you? Where do you begin, and how do you know when a song is truly finished and ready to share? What a tricky question! My songwriting process varies from song to song, but typically my process looks like this: I come up with a chord progression I really like and then I sing some nonsense melodies over top of it until something sticks. Then come the lyrics! My lyrics tend to take longer for me because I'm really picky! Sometimes I start with a lyric and elaborate on that, and sometimes the lyrics come at the same time as the chord progressions! I really enjoyed the process of collaboration with this new record in particular. My producer, Wes McCraw, and I got to work together to bring these songs to life (a lot of them started with just a basic piano loop) and it was truly a blast bouncing ideas off of each other and building these songs. Knowing when a song is truly finished and ready to be shared is really difficult! I tend to believe that no song is TRULY finished or 100% ready. There are always going to be things I could change or adjust and I know it'll never be perfect. I think it's really a matter of 'ripping off the bandaid' so to speak. I obviously want the music I release to be the highest quality, but I try not to put pressure on myself. Ideally, with every new release I'm getting better at what I do. Having that perspective helps me with letting go. It's really therapeutic letting a song out into the wild and looking forward to what comes next. What can you tell us about your EP “Bad For Me”? What’s the underlying concept? The songs on 'Bad for Me' were inspired by a friendship of mine. There are a lot of complexities within our relationship and in recent years this friend and I have had quite a lot of ups and downs. I was finding that even in the worst situations, there was something about this person that I just couldn't let go. I guess I was holding on to versions of ourselves that didn't even exist anymore. This kind of thing happens so often in relationships. We know someone is toxic for us but we want to feel the burn anyway. That's where the idea of 'Bad for Me' came about. I decided to twist my vulnerable situation into a story about this very thing. Why do we as humans want things that are bad for us? It's self-sabotage at it's finest. Who in your life would you say has had a great effect on your music and your direction as an artist? My dad is a songwriter and performer and growing up I got to watch him do his thing. I was always surrounded by music-- at church, at home, and at school-- but I wasn't really interested in music until 5th grade. I started playing the saxophone in 5th grade and joined a show choir that same year. That's when thing really changed for me. Show choir introduced me to musical theatre and quickly I fell head over heels in love with the music of Wicked, Wizard of Oz, Little Shop of Horrors, and more. My show choir director, Cheryl Boigegrain, believed in me when pretty much no one else did. She really set me on the path towards performing. I wanted to be on Broadway when I grew up. As I entered my teenage years, I started recording covers for Youtube. My parents got me a ukulele for Christmas in 2009 and that's when songwriting became a very natural progression for me. I wrote music about things any 16-year-old girl would write about...cheesy love songs about my first long term boyfriend! Finding my 'sound' took a long time. I started a ukulele band with my high school best friend, Ariel McCleary, and we performed together for a good five years. I loved collaborating with her but there came a time when we entered college that it just felt natural to go our separate ways. I started writing more and more and playing live every chance I got. I released my debut solo album, Make Sound, in February of 2018 and that's when I began figuring out the direction I wanted to go. Make Sound is kind of a hodge-podge of all the things that influenced me as an artist from the time I started songwriting to the time of its release. It's a really diverse blend of genres and topics from so many parts of my life. In 2018, I began playing live with a full band. Playing with a band taught me so much not only about collaboration, but about who I was as an artist. It gave me the opportunity to lead and really make these songs sound like me. With the release of Bad for Me in 2019, I feel like I've crafted a sound that is honest to me. I've always loved pop music and I know it gets a bad rap, but in my opinion there's NOTHING quite like a good pop song! I'm forever influenced by artists like Sara Bareilles and Emily King-- who can perfectly craft songs that are catchy (aka the pop 'hook') but are also flooded with honesty and vulnerability. There's a fine line you walk when you're making pop music but what these ladies do is what I hope to do. <3 What’s the bigger picture for you? What are your hopes for the future as an artist? NEW MUSIC IS COMING! I will be releasing a string of singles in the fall that I am really excited about. I've been working with new producers and new musicians on these songs and it really feels like things are headed in the right direction. My hope is to reach more people with each new song I release. I don't know where this life is going to take me, but I'm gonna continue writing about things that I feel and hope that other people can relate. That's why I do what I do, really. Human connection is a beautiful thing and I think music connects us in a way no other art form can. If I can make just one person feel something honest and real, I've done my job as an artist. - Check Out “Bold Face” By Canadian Hip-Hop Artist Ty-Rex
Ty-Rex is a Canadian artist from Toronto/Hamilton, Canada. The new age lyricist details his struggle and experience through the various energies that music can provide. Witness his journey and go along for the ride. Ty-rex does it all in memory of his late great childhood friend Chrisist. “Bold Face” presents an impressive balance between intensity and calm. A dramatic beat keeps a mellow rhythm, Ty-Rex’ rap delivery and lyricism offer an interesting sense of character, and a story-line that’s genuinely refreshing. Ty-Rex captivates right the way through. He does so without volume or gimmicks, just with the strength of his own bars and the unique quality of his voice. Structurally speaking, the back and forth between the verses and the hook works perfectly. “Bold Face” emerges with weight and originality, but still it provides this easy-going groove that feels unexpectedly uplifting and even motivational. You get a sense that Ty-Rex follows his own rules entirely, but does so with skill and consideration. These bars are thoughtful, clever, honest and reflective and the music meets the needs of this conceptual depth brilliantly. “Bold Face” is a superb track, an easy personal highlight for 2019. Listen to “Bold Face” here and keep reading for more with Ty-Rex. Hey Ty-Rex! How long have you been making music? Hey Buzz! I’ve been making music for longer than I can even remember... my dads a DJ, so I was always around music, Lil Bow Wow was my hero as a kid, and I remember wanting to be an artist since watching Disney musicals, Cheetah Girls (pause), and 8 Mile. Can you dive into the lyrics of “Bold Face” and give us more details on what the inspiration of this single is? The inspiration of this single is pretty straight forward, I open the song saying “Sometimes it’s hard to be vulnerable as a man, so imma let the pen bleed on the paper, and document my pain”.This record is just my pain put into words, family things that are personal, things that I haven’t said to my parents to their face, and I don’t know if they will ever even hear this record, but if they do, I hope it’s at the right time and place and hopefully they don’t misinterpret it because all though it’s from a place of pain, it’s also from a place of honesty and LOVE. Whats the mainstream hip-hop scene like in your hometown? What sets you apart? The mainstream hip hop scene in my hometown is growing at a rapid rate, everyone seems to be stepping up their quality and new artists are emerging everyday. I feel like inner city politics stops us from collaborating more, if we did we can make it a lot farther. Also, lots of artists don’t want to collab because they think they’re too good to collab locally but they need to understand that whether someone has 1000 views or 5000 views, were still in the same realm and were both still a hit single away from changing our lives. The race is for the long haul, it’s not about who makes it first, as long as we can make it together. What sets me apart from the other talent in my city, is, I believe that im one of the few artists left with a traditional rap style, in terms of hardcore lyricism from the old school that can still merge well with the new school. I’m some what of an anomaly because not many people can do both. I’m definitely a punchline/motivation rapper but I love to be versatile with my styles so I can’t be boxed in. Where is the best setting to listen to your songs, and what do you hope people take away from them? Depends on the song. The best setting to listen to my music completely depends on the song because different songs are for different vibes and different moods. I may have a song to help u grieve and reflect on losing a love one, another one may be about the love of your life, and the next one can be about shooting 20 niggas, & robbing 20 banks with a bunch of metaphorical out of this world punchlines with no real subject matter but it still rocks. What are your main aspirations as an artist going forward? I don’t aspire to be the biggest pop star hit maker in the world. I do believe in this climate I can have my own pocket, so if I capture a niche audience who I know I can connect with on a different level, I believe I can create a cult fan base, and change peoples lives one day at a time through my art. I obviously wanna be rich and famous to a degree like everyone else, but my main objective is impact, I’d love to go down as one of the greatest to ever do this. What other projects are you working on through the end of 2019? I just released my project “Jurassic Park EP” on September 11th, 2019. I’ve been getting great feedback on it and my focus is to push that project through the end of the year. For my roll out, I put out a single a week for 4 weeks up until the release of the 5 track EP, then I put out a freestyle to Dreamville’s “Down Bad” a day before the projects release. It’s a smooth, easy 15 min listen, and I focused on making great records instead of strictly showing off my rapping ability. I make music at a high volume and I plan to release at a high volume. I may put out a few singles by the end of the year but as of right now I’m focused on pushing Jurassic Park EP, and gaining more exposure while working on my next project, “Carnivore Season Vol. 2” most likely coming in 2020. Thankfully rock music is returning to the passionate, skillful escapism of its roots. Listen to “Love You More” here and keep scrolling to read our interview with Onism E. Hey Onism E! How did your band come to fruition? Hi! Well, the word Onism is the knowledge that you could be anywhere at any point in time; the frustrations of being stuck in one body. That's this band in a nutshell. Ha. I had a lot of moving parts for a bit because at the beginning it was just me. I would play, write, and record on my own. There were a lot of times I thought, if I was in LA I could play with that cool bass player or if I was in Austin, I could play with that amazing drummer. It was tough at the beginning. Now, I have a rotating cast of characters so to speak that play shows with me BUT, it looks like a permanent lineup is on the horizon and I am excited about that possibility. Tell us about your new single “Love You More”? What inspired it? "Love You More" is about a friend of mine. He was amazing, brilliant, sweet and kind. He was everything any proud parent would want with one difference, he was transgender. His family basically disowned him and that crushed him. That was my song to him. I wanted him to know that I would love him no matter what and that I would always be there for him. I needed him to know that someone loved him "as is" and that my view of him would never change. When he took his life I wasn't sure how to finish it or if I would release it but then, I realized I needed to because it's his song. My hope is that it reaches those that need it the most. I hope it gives them courage, helps them find the strength and makes them feel a little less alone. Is this new single leading up to a bigger project? Kinda. Ha. I've been releasing singles all year. This song is the fourth one and we have a couple more to come...I think. Ha. I think a big project might be in store for 2020 but for now, I'm happy releasing singles and figuring out things as I go. Where is the best setting to listen to your songs, and what do you hope people take away from them? Hmm. Well, I have a friend that said the song, "Stay" made him workout harder. "Let You Go" made a friend cry. She told me that I needed to warn her when I was going to pull that crap so that she could prepare ahead of time and be home with a box of tissue and a glass of wine. The response to "Love You More" has been about love and hope. Again, a friend told me it made her cry. I don't mean to make people cry but I seem to elicit that response. So I would say, it depends but you may need tissue. Ha. Does that help? As far as the take away, I write and share because we all deal with hurt, joy, love, sadness, anger, betrayal, defeat....I hope they listen and it makes them feel less alone and more hopeful. Some of the best songs have made me cry until my eyes were all puffy but afterwards, I felt better. Music can be so powerful and I hope people see my songs that way. What’s next for you going through to the end of 2019? More music and we're going to tour some so I am excited. We have played a lot of private shows but we are finally going to get out there to play some cool venues. So to those that have asked when we'll be playing live, follow us on your favorite social and stay tuned! Keep up with Onism E through social media: www.instagram.com/onism_e #BuzzMusic

- Dynamic Duo Depth And Soul Go Hard In “Fire On A Beat”
Depth and Soul are a dynamic duo from the sleepy city of Nelson B.C. Although the city may be known for sleeping and laying low these two are not. They mix like fuel and fire, and once they get together things get heated and great music happens. After realizing the connection these distant cousins decided to connect family ties and make something happen. What started as a song quickly turned into another song, and another and another. There was no turning back once that fire started. Pulling creation from hip hops forefathers the sound of Depth and Soul has a 90’s vibe with a heavy emphasis on both the drums and lyricism. The best way to sum up Depth and Soul is “music with a deep meaning that can resonate inside your soul.” “Fire On A Beat” was the first song Depth and Soul crafted and was fitting to be the first release from their album “Valley Of The Lost Souls”. The smooth and confident sound of Depth and Soul reignites for this latest release “Fire On A Beat”. Offering up a series of energetic and multi-layered hip hop tracks, “Fire On A Beat” deals with hard-hitting bars and quick verses. It leads with a relentless vocal outpouring and a quickly likeable groove. Fine production by lets the music stand tall, a strong mix means you can turn this up and engage with the energy of each soundscape as much as the personality and storylines at the heart of the writing. The concepts and the moods set by the music intrigue and appeal. The flow and the passion in Depth and Soul’s words are completely immersive and addictive to listen to. The colorful video is worth a watch to enjoy the full experience of escapism and hone in on every word. Depth and Soul are known to offer something refreshing and undoubtedly welcome in contemporary hip-hop. Check out “Fire On A Beat” here and read more with Depth and Soul in our exclusive interview below! Hey Depth and Soul! Welcome to BuzzMusic, how did you create your stage name? Hey, thanks for having us. Our stage name stems from our artist names being Soulemnity and Depth. The name came about by accident really, we were just talking about similar duo's from The Grouch and Eligh, Eyedea and Abilities and Depth and Soul came out. We both kinda looked at each other and knew that was it, had goose pumps and everything. Can you dive into the meaning of the lyrics in “Fire On A Beat”? What does this track represent for you? To me (Soul) it represents getting back in the saddle and swing of things. Not to hate on the top 50 or whatever but there some garbage music out there. We wanted to shed some light on that and get some thought provoking music out. How did your collaboration together come about? Depth was living in Vancouver for a couple years and decided to move back to Nelson, so he hollared at his little cousin Soul and said he wanted to make some music. Both of us were on a long hiatus from music so it was fresh and exciting to start working on something. If you had to pick just one song in your collection to adequately describe your sound, which song would you choose and why? Released?... hmmm... I think Fire on a Beat. Our album has a lot of emotions in it so its a good generalization from a collection of eclectic sounds. You could say it scratches the surface to a vault of music. What do you hope to achieve as hip-hop artists through the end of 2019? We just want the guy down the block to be listening to us or wearing a shit. We're humble dudes, we got another project dropping in the winter, hopefully in 2019. - DJ/Producer ZOLA, Teams Up With Singer-Songwriter Christen Morrell In New Song "Our Last Summer"
Hey ZOLA and Christen Morrell! How has 2019 been for you so far? ZOLA: 2019 has been great for me so far, I quit a job I wasn't happy with and have been really focusing on my production. I'm excited about the releases I have lined up and recently signed my first track to a label! Christen Morrell: So far, 2019 is going great! After finishing my second year at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, I returned home for the summer to Annapolis, Maryland where I had a number of performance opportunities locally and in Washington D.C. I was also able to enjoy reconnecting with old friends, did some travel/backpacking internationally and having more time away from my academics to focus on my songwriting. Now back at Berklee, Boston for the Fall semester, I’m looking forward to continue honing my craft, work on some new releases, perform around the city, and prepare to move back to Valencia, Spain in the Spring. Tell us about the creation process for your latest track "Our Last Summer"! ZOLA: I started producing the track while I was on vacation in Mexico. I was in a bit of a life-slump at the time and was incredibly unhappy at my sales job. I also had started thinking a ton about how everyone follows this path where they start going to school at around age 6, and then it's just school school school work work work. I don't know how we're expected to figure out what our passions are and commit to a job where we'll be spending a large portion of our life. I told Christen I wanted the lyrics to comment on these thoughts I'd been having, a sort of break from the norm. We decided that summer nights/adventures would be a good theme for the lyrical content. After that, the lyrics were all Christen. Christen Morrell: Daniel sent me this track towards the end of my Spring semester and I immediately heard the potential for it. The track just sounded/felt like Summer and being so close to ending the school year, I was already in that mindset, (i.e. - tired of working and ready for vacation). Originally with the songwriting we were thinking about finding a rapper for the second verse, but being as Summer’s peak was passing, we made a team decision that I should go ahead and write the second verse in order for us to be able to release it in August… Maybe in a remix for next summer though! ;) Where is the best setting to listen to "Our Last Summer"? What do you hope people take away from it? ZOLA: I'd say the track plays well in warm weather and party environments. Based on what I mentioned before I want people to go out and enjoy life whenever they can. I think people should take more time to break from the norm and the sometimes mechanical nature of life. Christen Morrell: Exactly what ZOLA said! I think this song could also be played in the dead of winter when the summertime sadness comes in and you’re feeling nostalgic… tbh that’s probably what I’m going to do. What was it like working with together again? Is this something we can expect to see more of in the future? ZOLA: I've worked with Christen on two previous songs. Honestly it's always a pleasure, she has a great voice and is a talented lyricist. We've already started working on another project together. Christen Morrell: I love working with ZOLA. His tracks are always refreshingly different and have a clear structure that allows me to form a song lyrically. Apart from being an extremely talented Producer/DJ, his communication while working is really good which important when collaborating. Can we expect a larger full-length album from you in the near future? ZOLA: Personally, I'm planning on releasing a single around once a month. I released my debut EP, Take Off, a little over a year ago and have been focusing on consistent output. Christen Morrell: My debut EP is out on all streaming platforms but currently, I’m working on a few single releases for this Fall and January 2020. What other projects are you working on? ZOLA: As I mentioned before I just signed a track to a label, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to specify which one, but that was a goal of mine for 2019 so I'm pretty excited about that. I'm also working on a couple of other singles to release throughout 2019/2020. I can't wait to share them with everyone! Christen Morrell: Currently working on a few single releases for this Fall and January 2020. - Sumwhr Gives Us Blends of R&B and Hip/Hop In Track "Confidence"
Sumwhr is the type of artist that is mellow and contemporary with his stylings of music. As a predominantly R&B/Hip-Hop artist, Sumwhr can take a variety of sounds within his category, and transform them in a way that sounds almost electronic. Sumwhr pours his authentic self into his music and expresses his emotions in a way he is comfortable doing so: music. Music has shaped the person Sumwhr has become and acts as an integral aspect of his life. We definitely appreciate the programming for the majority of his music, and the beats held throughout his tracks are addicting to listen to. We couldn't help but notice the more mature sound his music captures and then adds a modern element in the mix. Sumwhr's latest release: "Confidence". "Confidence" will give you exactly what the title says. You feel elevated when listening to the music of Sumwhr, and especially so with "Confidence". We appreciate the subtle use of autotune in Sumwhr's vocalism. It's the type that isn't too overpowering but instead creates a certain type of electronic ambiance. The blend of synths, combined with his inert flow to the execution, is what brings this R&B track to the next level. Sumwhr maintains consistency throughout "Confidence", and has an undeniable charm that will keep your attention for sure! We're excited to see how Sumwhr can progress as an artist, and in the meantime, we'll be vibing along to his tracks! Give a listen to "Confidence" here, and keep scrolling for Sumwhr's interview! Hey there Sumwhr! Congrats on your release of "Confidence"! How did the curation process of the song go? I actually had the idea stuck in my head for about a week or so, and for me once an idea sparks I quickly begin to come up with melodies. So after a few minutes of sitting in front of my DAW, I developed a piano melody in the key of E melodic minor. I focused on creating an atmospheric sound with a pad, layered with foley background textures. The drums are very trap inspired which gives the song that modern edge. After a few minutes of producing, arranging, and mixing I began writing. What would you say is the predominant message you're trying to express to your listeners within "Confidence"? The message behind “Confidence” is to face and overcome a fear of opening up to a significant other. We all go through this stage in our lives when it’s really hard to let someone in. Sometimes we have to feel secure in our own way in order to move forward. We often forget that it’s all about balance, and being confident with ourselves to build strong relationships. As an independent artist, what would you say is the biggest challenge you predominantly face within the music industry? One of the challenges is knowing your strength and weaknesses as an independent artist. Having a team is something you should establish very early on, and I learned that the hard way trying to do it all by myself. One thing that is important is marketing your material to the right demographic and majority of the time this is the hardest element for an independent artist. Can you describe how the songwriting process compares to the recording process for you personally? The way I write is through recording, it’s just something about being in the moment you know, like the energy is different. Often times when writing I basically load up the session, press record and begin shooting out melody ideas. To be honest it all depends on how I am feeling, because some songs require a little more time. It was great to showcase your music here on BuzzMusic! What's your next big move in the music world? I would like to continue the momentum throughout the years end, which is to release a song every month. I also hope to land another big placement before the end of the year. Hey JMB Music! Congrats on the release of your new single “Am I Wrong?”! What does this song represent for you? Thank you, I really appreciate it! To me, this song represents growth. It's the first song I have released that I also co-produced, (shoutout to Spaceman) and getting into the production side of creating was one of my goals for 2019. This record is also special because I didn't lock in on a direction for the song. I created what felt good in the moment and didn't try to fit into a specific genre or category. Where is the best setting to listen to “Am I Wrong?”, and what do you hope people take away from it? That's a good question. It's an upbeat song with fun melodies and a catchy hook, so I think the best settings would be at a pregame before a party or event, or in the car on your way somewhere. Although it is a fun song, I hope people really tune in to the lyrics as well. Am I Wrong really embodies what the dating or "talking" scene is like nowadays. In the beginning, a lot of people claim they aren't looking for something too serious but somewhere down the line emotions get involved and it becomes hard to decipher their feelings and what to do. If you had to pick just one song in your collection to adequately describe your sound, which song would you choose and why? If I had to pick just one song it would be “Andele” off of my last EP, Late to the Party. "Andele" really showcases how I create and execute melodies and different cadences. Even though it's an up tempo song, the chorus still has an R&B vibe to it. So all in all, I guess you can say my sound is versatile, and Andele definitely shows that. What’s the concept of the music video for “Am I Wrong”? For the video we wanted to paint the picture of a first date or first interaction type of scenario. While on the date they are getting to know each other and they're vibing. At the same time, their intentions and each person's views on relationships or dating are also being exchanged. We definitely wanted to keep the visuals as fun and as colorful as the song is, so we thought the Atlanta Beltline was the perfect location because of all the artwork, eating spots, and good weather. Shoutout to my good brother Brook Waven on directing, shooting, and editing the video! Do you have any upcoming events or shows you’d like to talk about? What’s next for you through the end of 2019? I had a few saxophone gigs this summer, that were really cool. I am still working on the schedule as of right now, but I am planning to throw a soundstage pretty soon. It will feature me and some artist that I’m cool with, so I will keep you all updated on that. I also have another single lined up for the fall to get everyone back in their feelings lol. In addition to that, I will be working on writing some songs for artist and producing. Connect with JMB Music on social media: www.Instagram.com/j.middlebrooks
- “Just” By Five.others Delivers A Soulful Groove
Five.others is an indie/soul artist from Toronto, Canada. Also known as Greg, he’s a veteran of a decade in Toronto's indie music scene, Five.others has written, performed, and engineered for various acts such as The Lipstick Junkies, Swift Arrow, Naked Wild, and more. Short and bittersweet, Five.others debut EP “Sweet Blue” juxtaposes melancholic R&B and soul with funky slacker rock guitars to create something equal parts jazzy, groovy, and contemplative, perfect for a short walk home. Featured on the EP “Sweet Blue” is the soulful jam “Just” that pours through with a certain mellow delicacy that allows the listener to relax, to remove themselves from the rush of the world and lets the music create a moment of peacefulness around them. You become ready and willing to drown in this ocean of bliss with Five.others. His vocals, these riffs, this passion and soul that is the entire set-up, and the performance all work there magic. The song is incredibly relatable and can be interpreted by a broad audience due to its accessibility. Greg’s vocals shine beautifully at every step, carrying the weight of the concept with authenticity and skill. There’s nostalgia in the approach throughout “Just” but the melody and the style overall bring through a fairly incomparable vibe right now, and there’s so much value in that. Absolutely worth a listen if the weight of the world has been getting a little too heavy for you. Check out “Just” here and read more with Five.others below! Welcome to BuzzMusic Greg! How long have you been creating music I’ve been creating music since I started playing an instrument, so about 12 years ago. I’ve always been drawn to writing and creating my own things in general, so it was natural for me to start doing so musically. Who or what inspired you to begin recording and releasing your material? I started out playing in bands, and honestly that had been my primary focus throughout my adult life. As my friends and band mates grew up and our projects became dormant I needed an outlet for the musical energy I still had, and moreover, a sense of purpose became vacant in my life. It was a long road to try to find my singular voice in what had always been a collaborative experience for me, and I feel that I’m just beginning to scratch the surface of what that is. Ultimately the energy that drives me to create is utilitarian, as creating is the foremost medium in which I actualize and express my sense of self worth, a concept which otherwise eludes me. In short, recording is a habit that I need for my own sanity and well being. Releasing music, on the other hand, is less natural to me. I have an inherent struggle in both seeking attention and accepting validation, that being said there are reasons to push myself beyond the comfort of my anonymity and invisibility. I do need the attention and validation that I avoid to fulfill the very purpose that drives me. With the amount of time, effort, and resources that I’ve committed to creating music, my hope is to return to the world some of the meaning and emotion that music has given me. In turn, that others might be inspired is reason to share in itself. We love your song “Just”! Can you dive into the lyrics? For reference I’ll start with the lyrics: is it there when you close your eyes sweet blue vision guide you, to confide to, and remind you undecided, undivided, true over and over i’ve been racing back to start anew i’d take back all the days i’d wait up every night i’d find some other way just to make things right Lyrically, “Just” touches on themes that are present throughout my work, namely regret, guilt, anxiety, and the inability to grasp the conceptuality of how one interacts with their past, present, and future. It is important to me to maintain enough ambiguity and ambivalence in my lyrics that they are open to several interpretations, demonstrated by the multiple meanings of the word “just” (only, fairly, or exactly). The other distinction that contextualizes the song comes in the form of the second line, and name of the EP, Sweet Blue. What is sweet blue? Is it what the song is about? To whom or what the song is addressed to? Can you change it? How much can you change it? Should you? Will you? Did you? From there the contradictions and dichotomies portrayed throughout the song can be recontextualized. Personally, sweet blue could mean my depression, my music, a person I had or have a relationship with, or even myself, to give a few examples. It might be difficult to change the ways in which one relate to those things, even if the change seems small or justified. Really it’s about questioning that which you haven’t reconciled. What do you hope your listeners take away from this song? The main hope would be that people want to hear more! Hopefully “Just” is just the right mix of groovy yet contemplative to catch listeners off guard in a good way. What projects are you working on through the end of 2019? I’m glad you asked! I’m really happy to be continuing to work with some other acts that I’m a part of, as I’m recording, playing live, and maybe even shooting some videos with Naked Wild, Swift Arrow, and Vamplounge. As for five.others, I’m to play my first shows, and am excited to continue writing and recording music, as I’ve already gotten well underway to releasing more demos on the five.others SoundCloud. The next official release won’t be until at least 2020, so I’ll be promoting Sweet Blue as best I can until then. I’m so thankful for the acknowledgment and support that I’ve gotten so far, and for this project to officially exist. At some point I’d like to emphasize and incorporate my photography and poetry work as five.others, which can be found at my Instagram and Tumblr pages, alongside the music aspect as well. Until then I’ll leave a huge thank you to BuzzMusic for having me, and to you readers for making it through my nonsense!
