  • “That Don’t Mean A Thing” By Chupapi Will Give You Chills

Chad Strephen Walt, better known for his professional name, Chupapi, is a talented recording artist from Toronto, Canada. Playing with writing lyrics since he was 9 years old, Chupapi was always obsessed with the arts. He consistently wrote music on his piano and always kept a journal of all his song ideas. At age 15, Chad decided to buy a microphone from his local music store and began recording his own lyrics. “I honestly use to release everything I put out. This is where I was wrong. It’s important to stay active but still maintain an element of mystery.” After releasing 3 albums under 3 different music accounts, Chad was slowly developing his craft as an audio engineer. In late 2017, Chad began has career as “Chupapi”, a word that started as a childhood nickname transformed into this young man's artist name. He has recently shifted his genre of music from Trap/Hip-hop to R&B/Acoustic songs. Chupapi is currently streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and more! He currently has released 11 singles and one album to date. We are looking forward to his new single “Love Song, Dear” that drops mid August 2019! “That Don’t Mean A Thing” is a flawless R&B hit. The slow deliberate backbeat and echoing synths remind me of The Weeknd’s sound, but Chupapi is more original than that. The melancholy and emotion in his tone takes on a striking physicality. “That Don’t Mean A Thing” weaves through a vulnerable side of Chupapi to show the fragility of broken relationships as a key point for uncovering subtle textures in his sound. He is able to paint a picture in our minds through his skilled lyricism and layered vibes. I love this single because it’s easy to chill to but allows you to escape into the lyrics and sound. I highly recommend checking out “That Don’t Mean A Thing” and Chupapi’s entire repertoire available on all major streaming platforms. Stay on the lookout for Chupapi! Check out “That Don’t Mean A Thing” here and read more with Chupapi in our exclusive interview below! Hi Chupapi! Can you talk more about the meaning behind “That Don’t Mean A Thing”? That don’t mean a thing is about that one lover that you hope to feel the same way about you that you do for them but sometimes things are different in your own mind then they are in the ones you most care for. What do you hope your listeners take away from this song? To learn to move on. Learn to live your life how you want to and not depict the way you act according to others standards. Don’t let your love for other people and the outcome of that love determine your own happiness. Can you recall the first song you ever wrote? How would you compare it to your writing abilities now? Haha the first song I ever wrote was called “feel em now”. A trap song about becoming famous and wanting others to perceive my message in my music in the way I intending it to. Now a days I’ve branched out in my writing topics. I write about what occurs on a daily basis rather then what I hope to see in the future. I’ve learned to work now and look for results later, and by focusing on the now you can subconsciously help plan for your own future. I hope to one day release that song :) What are some challenges you faced while writing “That Don’t Mean A Thing”? The hardest thing was putting my feelings into lyrics. When I write about money and cars and things that I aspire to have, it’s all fun and games but when the love is real, it’s hard to actually express it because how you feel in your mind is always way too complex for a pen and paper. In your music career so far, what would you say you're most proud of? My proudest moment was getting on Spotify’s discover weekly and having my song titled “beneath her heart” shoot up in its listens extremely. The song is currently at 90k listens and it’s surreal that I almost hit 100k listens. This will be a huge mile stone for me. I hope that these songs are as fun and meaningful for you all as they were for me writing them. • Justin Golden Keeps His Style Vivid In The Relaxing Hit, “Talking”

Justin Golden origins are deeply vested in the blues. He’s always felt most connected to this genre due to his southern esque background. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 19 and everything just musically and naturally flowed through him. With an extremely diverse musical palette, Golden aims to bring some new ideas to traditional blues forms. So we took a listen to Justin Golden’s new single titled “Talking” and it was everything we needed and more! The blues in this record had its way of creating this southern and soulful rhythmically vibe that you can’t help but fall in love with. I loved the representation of different blues instruments in the record because it was able to highlight the artistry in Justin Golden and bring out his style significantly more. Justin’s voice floats effortlessly across the track with a smooth-sailing fusion of both. Justin Golden keeps this relaxed style to his singing, not adding too much pressure but still showcasing his high skill set and talent as an artist. “Talking” was a nice and smooth execution that really gave us an idea on who Justin Golden is. The delivery was flawless and the vibes were immaculate. Listen to "Talking" here and get to know more about Justin Golden below! Welcome to BuzzMusic Justin Golden! Growing up, who would you consider some of your direct and main influences for your music and style? Thank you so much! You know, I didn't really start playing until I was 19 or so.  As I have been growing as a musician, some of my biggest influences have been the old school blues greats - Taj Mahal, Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell, Blind Willie Johnson, Lonnie Johnson. What has been the most challenging aspect for you so far as an artist? How do you overcome such obstacles? I think it's been a real test of my patience and focus.  Being creative is a very difficult and long process for me.  When I have burst of creativity and get a song done quickly, I immediately want to share it and get it out in the world.  I've had to learn that things take time to get right and if I want to put my best foot forward, I need to exercise some restraint. I have been trying to overcome my creativity issues by just finding time each week to try something new with my instruments. We loved “Talking”. What was the main inspiration behind these lyrics? I'm so glad to hear that! The lyrics are inspired by that real life experience of a friendship that could be something more. you know, when you're not sure if romance is blooming, but that person stays on your mind. In what ways does “Talking” represent Justin Golden? "Talking" in my re-entry into the Blues world.  I love playing blues music but I challenge myself to find ways to bring new ideas to what people consider The Blues.  I think "Talking" has kind of a classic sound, but it definitely doesn't have a Tradition blues structure or form.  It's me just trying to find where I fit into this scene. What can we expect from you this fall? Any exciting upcoming releases? I will be releasing a full-length album sometime this Fall! I'm in the studio now trying to get it done, between gigs and tours.  I can't wait to get this thing into the universe. Connect with Justin Golden on social media www.instagram.com/justingoldenmusic

His next single "City" is expected to see nothing but success. “City” is a retrospective track that allows the listener to feel Ryan’s true thoughts and feelings. During the catchy hook, Ryan sings, “I don’t like this City” which refers to the place he’s stuck in his emotions and feeling like he doesn’t belong. In a huge city like Los Angeles, it’s easy to be overwhelmed and feel like you won’t make it. It’s a vicious cycle of not being able to fit in, and then not making it anywhere because you feel like you don’t belong. Ryan Nealon has persevered and found an outlet for his fears and emotions. “City” is a truthful anthem that focuses on the struggles of being an artist. The sound arrangements are refreshing and not over produced. “City” is a timeless pop hit, it’s a light-hearted tune with layers of raw lyricism. Ryan Nealon strives to connect with his listeners and make them understand they are not alone. “City” was written by Ryan Nealon, Bret Paddock, Kylie Rothfield, and JBACH, and was produced by Nealon and multi-award winning producer Zack Djurich (Kanye West, NAS, Teyana Taylor). Djurich also mixed/mastered the track at his studio in North Hollywood, CA. I highly recommend you check out “City” and add it to your summer playlist and stay tuned for more from Ryan Nealon! Listen to “City” here and keep scrolling for Ryan Nealon’s interview with the BuzzMusic team! Hey Ryan! We’re so excited to be chatting with you about your new single “City”! Can you tell us more about the lyrics in the song? What emotions did you have to channel when writing it? Thanks for having me! My song "City" is a powerful anthem about feeling uncertain with your career path and whether or not you belong. The song's about my tumultuous relationship with Los Angeles, and I had the privilege to create this with Kylie Rothfield, Jonathan Bach, and Bret Paddock who equally poured their hearts into this track. We wanted to write a song which told the truth about being an artist--especially in a city like Los Angeles. When we were writing the lyrics, I wanted to be as honest as possible about my current situation. I work long hours, I am in countless sessions week after week, and it's so hard to feel like it's not all for nothing especially when you're not seeing a financial result. That's why when I said "don't know where I'm going, every door won't open, I can't find a way to get inside," I really meant it. Overall, this song is about feeling like you don't belong, and I hope people can relate and realize that they're not alone. How does living in Los Angeles affect who you are as an artist? I like to describe living in Los Angeles as a double-edge sword. On one hand I feel so incredibly inspired and driven being in such a fast-paced city with so many other creatives, but it also really weighs down on me and leads me to constantly compare myself to others even when I feel like I'm not. I've grown up so much since moving out here in 2013, and I have faced so many emotional hardships. I had my first real encounter with depression and anxiety, I went through periods of severe loneliness, I felt constantly judged for my outward and inward appearance, and through all of this I've really grown as a person which I think is pretty neat. As an artist I definitely take a lot of inspiration from Los Angeles because it's the most infuriating place with so much beauty and character at the same time--heck that's how "City" came to be. I also credit Los Angeles with helping me weed out the fake people in my life along with helping me find a tribe of friends that are more than friends--they're family. What challenges have you faced as an independent artist? How do you overcome those challenges? To quote one of my favorite bands ABBA--"Money, Money, Money." Being broke sucks a lot, but I have to keep pushing myself to stay focused and keep my eye on the prize, which for me is to be able to earn a living doing what I love (music). I feel like all independent artists put a lot of pressure on ourselves to "Keep Up With Jones'," and to constantly release very high dollar boujie content which truthfully no one can afford without a label. Do I have an answer on how to overcome this? Absolutely not haha; I'm about as broke as they come. But, I utilize my community, and have befriended lots of creatives who genuinely believe in my artist project to help me reach my goals which in return helps them reach theirs. What do you hope your listeners take away from “City”? I just really hope that people hear and understand the context behind City, and for those who are in Los Angeles, I hope they connect with it. This is a song I honestly wasn't even going to release, but it really helped me move on from a dark time in my life, and I wanted to be able to share it with the world and my community. As an artist, I'm all about transparency, and I want my listeners to know how I'm feeling and what I'm going through because it helps them get to know me better. What’s next for you through the end of 2019? I'm actually so beyond stoked for the rest of this year. 2019, was and is already such a massive year for me as far as growth is concerned. I released my song "Closer" off of my latest project in May, and after releasing "City," I have a song coming in late September/early October, and hopefully one more in November or December! These 4 songs, are very close to my heart, and I'm really excited that people are finally getting the chance to hear my original music! I’ve lived in Maryland all my life, but I’m moving to New York in two weeks for school. I’ve always been super into music, but I didn’t start taking it seriously until my freshman year in high school, when I linked with a guy who had a studio at his house and let me come record...even though I was a little trash haha. Let’s talk about the lyrics of “Shoreline Pt.1”! What theme does this track carry? What inspired it? I want people to hear this track and feel like they’re just having a great time at the beach, and also feel like they’re that man at the same time, because what inspired the song were those exact feelings. From an artist perspective, what do you think is the most powerful lyric in “Shoreline Pt.1”? “Don’t hate on me, hate the bud, cause when I’m off tree I just love throwing nuts.” I don’t know if this is the most important bar, but it’s my favorite because when I wrote I couldn’t stop laughing. Do you have any upcoming shows we should know about? I have a show tomorrow actually. It’s for the release of the whole EP. What’s next for you? The move to New York is definitely on the forefront of my mind, but in terms of future plans I just hope I can get New York, and the rest of the world to love me and my music. • Chi Tashi Boasts Lyrically Depth In "Nice Things"

With Lowell's Chi Tashi, you get an authentic point of view of an immigrant's son coming into his own. The duality of his upbringing can be heard throughout all of his songs using his emotional lyricism and unique rhyme schemes, the 29 year old MC paints a vivid picture of his personal trials and tribulations growing up in the city. Developing his craft over the years, Chi has established himself as a talent to look out for in the New England hip hop scene through his live performances, videos and singles releases. “Nice Things” (produced by 4AM Beatz)is the first single off of Chi’s album “Honey Off Thorns”. At first listen this is a bumping anthem with a west coast vibe chorus but given a few more spins and dissecting the lyrics you hear the layer of morose. It explodes through the speakers with a hard-hitting bass line and Chi Tashi’s legendary vocalism.  Equipped with a dynamic sound and bass-filled beats, Chi Tashi is sure to have you vibing along. His vocals are deep and hypnotizing. His smooth flow and flawless bars can be accredited to his years of experience and raw talent. The second verse was created by Chi after the passing of his Father. His music and writing style it's about the duality of life, taking the good with the bad. Chi Tashi’s upbeat flow and flawless, witty bars make “Nice Things” unparalleled in today’s hip-hop scene. Getting a message across, effortlessly reciting perfect lyrics, and finding/creating beats to match is admirable. I highly recommend you give this track a listen and dive into the lyrics with Chi Tashi. Check out “Nice Things” here and read more below in our exclusive interview. Hey Chi Tashi! Can you start by telling our readers more about yourself? Where to begin, well, second son of Margaret and Kings Tashi. First generation of Cameroonian decent, Massachusetts resident, Lowell’s very own. 30, father, cook, writer, music is my life blood, beer enthusiast and a plant lover. Also your new favorite rapper. Love this track “Nice Things”. Can you explain the writing process and any challenges you faced along the way? Starts by linking up with 4. I’m always on the search for producers and came across him, reached out and over time built a good relationship to the point where he trusted me with his google drive of beats. It was like a legit treasure cove, this was the third beat I ended up grabbing. Had the hook for a bit, 1st verse was completed shortly after that then I sat on the song for what ended up being a year. That tax reference in the chorus is from last season lol. 2nd verse came after my Dad died, the immediate effects of his passing and dealing with those emotions fueled not only this track but the album as a whole. What would be your dream collaboration? If you asked me like 3-4 years ago I would have said Kanye, he was an early influence, I related to his story a lot. Before rapping I was in a band and didn’t think I could tell my story through the avenue of rap considering the era of hip hop we were in during the early 2000’s. He inspired me. Now it’s fuck him, that Trump shit. I’m good. Right now…this is hard, umm, Kendrick or Childish Gambino, their versatility as creators! I’d like to be in that studio, cook something. What do you think sets you apart from other hip-hop artists? What set’s me apart is that I’m me, my music, is my story. I unapologetically put myself in every song. I’m grateful of that fact that people can relate but we all have our own unique experiences even with those shared, and our view of the world is shaped through that. I describe my music as “authentic, honest lyricism with a lot of sauce” haha and I mean it. My music is an direct representation of me I put that energy into the songs, music videos and shows. Can we expect more collabs with 4AM? Definitely, 4 has a dope sound, we have two other tracks that will make the album which I’m excited for y’all to hear. • Mischa Releases A Charismatic And Outgoing Hit, “Up Now”

Born and raised in Ontario Canada, Hip-hop and R&B artist, “Mischa” is based out of Ottawa, Ontario. Mischa began writing music in her early teenage years and was influenced by her friends who were musically inclined themselves. After a lot of dedication to her music working with various of artists, and releasing catchy melodies, Mischa has found a unique way to add a pop flavor to the hip-hop tunes she creates. Mischa released her single and video “Up Now” and this was a BOP. I was fascinated by the transitions from her singing to her rapping and she had this unique ability to make hip-hop look more vibrant. “Up Now” is a catchy song that is bound to become glued to your memory. After the first listen, you’re instantly replaying the single due to how addictive it is. This is a major sign of an artist who knows how to gain traction to her music. The lyrics were clean-slated with a well-executed flow and delivery. The rhythmic motion in the beat represents the pop elements that are weaving in-between with your standardized hip-hop components. “Up Now” is a song that has you feeling bright, charismatic, and fun. These optimistic vibes are just radiating through its listener, and it was enough to transform you into a fan of Mischa. She raised the bar high, now we’re excited to see how she keeps this momentum! Listen to “Up Now” here and get to know more about Mischa below! Check out Mischa's new EP "Like, Whoa" here! What’s up Mischa! Welcome to BuzzMusic. How was it growing up in Canada? Was your artistry influenced by your environment? Hey! Thank you so much for having me. Canada is an amazing place. I currently live in the Capital of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario. Ottawa is such a great city. The music scene is really developing from when I first moved here in 2015 and it’s amazing to grow with it. I grew up in Kitchener- Waterloo, Ontario. It’s a small town with some amazing people. I go back to visit as often as I can! I have also spent a large amount of the time being in Toronto, since KW and Toronto are about an hour in distance and a lot of my friends and family live there. That’s the city where my music started out of. So that’s a shout out to the 613, 519 and 416! I think the first time I ever wanted to see if I was capable of rapping was when I was 17. I had an extremely talented friend named Spiff, who would listen to instrumental hip-hop beats and freestyle over them. I would low key, go home and bring up instrumentals on my laptop and freestyle. I would either write down what I remembered in a notebook or I would record the cypher on my phone. Then one day I was like “okay, I can do this.” and started freestyling to him and I just never wanted to stop. So growing up, he was the one that really got me into it. I’m so grateful he did. What was the ultimate vision behind the music video for your single “Up Now”? I knew I wanted to film a music video at this location as soon as I heard the beat. I knew this was going to be the single on the project “LIKE, WHOA.” I didn’t want this video to not have a theme. I’m such an organized person. I quickly put this plot together and knew how to bring it to life. I called up Quest, told him the plan and he was instantly on board with it. I had the pleasure of bringing on Stephanie Plouffe, Jonny Brown, Vante Poems and WLFKT to the cast and crew. We all worked so well together and just overall had the most fun with it. The video was filmed at Ward14, this hidden gem in Ottawa. It’s a consignment bar. Everything inside it is for sale! Except for the penguins in the video, those are mine. Anyone who knows me, knows how much those penguins mean to me! Honestly, I wanted this video to be a vibe with some of the people I care about most. Why not drink Moscato out of a teapot at 3pm on a Monday? I mean, it makes blowing up a 6 foot inflatable flamingo and filling it with colourful balls a lot easier! Were there any obstacles you encountered in creating this record? Organizing a music video takes a lot of time, effort and hard work. You have to have a vision. You have to have a plan. The difference is in the details. But to be honest, I really feel like all of the finer details are my strong suit. I’m blessed that everything was just amazing with this track, video and the whole EP. Can you tell us more about your project “LIKE, WHOA”? “LIKE, WHOA” is a 5 track ep produced by Dvd2x, recorded/mixed and mastered by Geoff McNeely and written and performed by myself. This ep is a big project for me as it not only closes a door but opens a new one at the same time. There were things that I had to battle in the past 2 years that would have made it very easy for me to give up my career as a hip-hop artist. However, these same things pushed me to want to be my absolute best. I found with some of my older music, I wasn’t being as true to myself as an artist with how I wanted my music to sound. I started making the change about 10 months ago when I realized I had found my sound. In “LIKE, WHOA” there are some hidden references and elements from some of my earlier music as I wanted it to take those elements to close off that chapter. At the same time, in “LIKE, WHOA,” I showcase my sound and express that you haven’t heard all you’re going to hear from me. What's next for you? Oh my favourite question! I’m having a huge ep release party on the date “LIKE, WHOA” is released so I’ve had my hands full with a lot! I am currently finishing off writing an album that is set to release in 2020! I won’t say too much, but I’m excited. I have a project with Vante Poems on the go titled “Head over feels”. It’s set to be released later this year. I’m also in the midst of collaborating with a few Canadian artists. On top of that, I absolutely love performing. So I will be releasing more show dates shortly! • Deenyo Drops Much Anticipated EP “Reverse Archaeologist”

Talented rapper and lyricist Deenyo is back again with his explosive new EP “Reverse Archaeologist”. Making waves out of Baltimore, Deenyo’s latest release is extremely lyrical and personal. The “Reverse Archaeologist” concept is inspired by Lupe Fiasco’s song “The Cool”. In the song Lupe says, “Working like a, hmm, Reverse Archaeologist, except his buried treasure was sunshine”. Deenyo has always appreciated the vivid imagery in that lyric. As a whole, he tells a collective of stories on this project. Each track is immensely diverse and unique, the album can easily be played on repeat to understand every layer, symbolism, and the overall wordplay. “Open Letter” is a meaningful beginning to a powerful EP. The track is a poem that Deenyo turned into a song. The poem titled “Like a blind man, Like a deaf man”, is a blind man lecturing a man about things in life that are important that aren’t visual and a deaf man lecturing about the importance of things that cannot be heard. Through the song you realize it's the man’s inner thoughts speaking to himself. It’s a clean track with crisp lyricism and flow and starts off “Reverse Archaeologist” to an incredible start. “Sunlight” is the next track on the EP is the true ode to Lupe’s track “The Cool”. The first song Deenyo wrote for this project, “Sunlight” is all about love, heartbreak, and the struggles in between. It sheds light on the pain we deal with when love has been lost. Using the concept of being buried beneath the surface, the reverse archaeologist in the story attempts to dig himself out of the ground to reunite with his love, his “Sunlight”. Groundbreaking and meaningful, Deenyo puts his artistic poetry over a contemporary beat and stuns in “Sunlight”. “Time Travel” is about a heartbroken time traveller trying to go back in time and repair the love he’s lost. After failing every time, he realizes that he can’t change things, but he can enjoy the time he has and the memories shared. JAY FRE$CO is featured on this song and absolutely kills it as usual. Producer DeCicco Beats created the melodic beat that we’re bumping on repeat. Keeping up with the theme of love trials and tribulations “Moonlight” is all about a girl who’s present in the night like the moon, but always leaves in the morning. The track is about a relationship based off of time and convenience. The moon shines her love and light over the man's world, but leaves every morning. Deenyo states in his opinion this is the most complete song on the EP. “Tired” is all about a man losing an important love in his life. He’s able to learn and grow from the experience but he struggles with being able to fully move on. The effort from sustaining this mentality has made the man mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted. This track resonates with me on so many levels. Everyone has dealt with the stress on their heart when trying to move on after a heartbreak. “Memory Lane” is an extremely retrospective track, it weaves through storytelling elements as Deenyo talks about vivid memories, mistakes and lessons. He digs up buried feelings and has a very emotional discussion with himself about why things didn’t work out, him holding himself back, but also realizing that the future is optimistic. Overall “Reverse Archaeologist” is heavily lyrical and emotionally-rich, Deenyo has truly outdone himself with his versatility and creativity. The emotion, soul and heart that is evident throughout the EP is overwhelming. This project will bring comfort to so many listeners through it’s honesty and relatability. Deenyo is most definitely the one to watch through 2019! I highly recommend you check out “Reverse Archaeologist” here and read more with Deenyo below in our exclusive interview! Hey Deenyo, welcome back! Congratulations on the release of “Reverse Archaeologist”! What is the overall message or theme you want your listeners to take away from this project? I want listeners to know that this project is a journey. The main character in the music strives for growth and love. His battles are intrinsic and he has to learn to deal with his emotions & grief in order to be successful. Which track on the EP is closest to your heart? This is a tough choice honestly. But if i had to choose one, it would be “Sunlight”. I was going through a very tough time when I wrote it and each line brings back those emotions I was dealing with at the time. What emotions did you channel when writing “Memory Lane”? Uncertainty, regret, anger, and fatigue were all emotions I felt when I wrote “Memory Lane”. I also felt opportunistic. We love that you did another collaboration with JAY FRE$CO! Is this something we can expect again in the future? Absolutely. Not only is he my favorite artist, he’s one of my close friends. We want to put out a joint project in the future. That’s definitely what I’m aiming at releasing next. How do you think living in Baltimore affects who you are as an artist? • Check Out Dilan Jay’s Heart Warming Album “3.14”

From right here in Los Angeles, California, the talented singer, songwriter, rapper, guitarist and producer Dilan Jay was the first artist from his country of heritage (Sri Lanka) to place on the U.S. Billboard Charts. Dilan spent 8 years as a rapper under his former pseudonym, “DeLon”, during which time he produced 4 hip hop albums and 2 mixtapes and saw much success. He is known by his followers as the “King of Ceylon” and has collaborated with American songwriter Jacob Luttrell, singer Ty$Sign, and other prominent producers in Sri Lanka. Dilan retired from his rapping career as DeLon in 2016. Adopting Dilan Jay to help represent his new musical direction, Dilan released 2 acoustic singing albums in 2019, “3.14” and “Songs About Love and Other Stuff”, with sounds similar to Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, and inspiration drawn from Fleetwood Mac. The 5-track album “3.14” begins with a touching piano ballad titled “Favorite Song”. Dilan bares his soul and has his heart on his sleeve through the vulnerable lyricism and raw energy. The harmonically-rich vocals showcase Dilan Jay’s spectacular range right out the gate. The reminiscent track focuses on the waves emotions that come with missing someone. Dilan belts out “If I’m honest, I still feel // The same way that I used to feel // And now that you’re gone // I’m still singing your Favorite Song” throughout the chorus and we can feel the power and emotion behind his words. The album transitions into a light-hearted and acoustically driven song “Ophelia” and we’re hooked. The catchy melody and overall comfort that “Ophelia” exudes makes us want to sing along and fall in love. Dilan Jay curates music that any listener for all walks of life can relate to and enjoy. “Pineapple Life” gives us a refreshing glimpse at Dilan Jay’s versatility within genres. He creatively weaves through a groovy soundscape with undertones of reggae, tropical and surf-rock vibes. This quirky composition will get you up out of your seat and singing along with the eclectic stylings of Dilan Jay. As the album “3.14” transitions into “Kick Back”, it reminds me of a wittier version of Bruno Mars’ legendary track “The Lazy Song”. The doo-wop vibe and overall theme of wanting to chill and relax is contagious and a perfect song for the summer season. The final track on the album is titled “Better Days”, a truly touching song that’s extremely close to Dilan Jay’s heart. It’s about staying positive and never giving up hope, even in your darkest times. “Better Days” is truly close to Dilan because it’s all about when he lost everything and had to rebuild himself from nothing. I highly recommend you check out the inspiring music video to match! “3.14” takes the listener on a brilliant musical journey of emotions, laughs and incredibly acoustic arrangements. Stay on the lookout for Dilan Jay and his future endeavors! Listen to “3.14” here and read more with Dilan Jay below in his interview with the BuzzMusic team! Can you tell us more about your upbringing and how you got started in your music career? My music career actually began when I started DJing at just 12 years-old. I thought if I could play music, specifically at parties, I could become cool (a major goal for 12 year-olds!). Working parties thus taught me intricately about music and even more importantly, what sounds and beats made people move. I fell in love with music in those formative years, and I became a professional DJ for hire. My DJing eventually evolved into a rapping career, and so, I became a professional hip hop artist for more than 8 years (my pseudonym, “DeLon"). Performing as DeLon was an incredible experience which took me around the world and made me the #1 artist in my country of origin, Sri Lanka. I released 4 albums and 2 mixtapes as DeLon, and I also recorded hundreds more songs that I never released. In other words, I inadvertently became a producer. I became known by my fans as the “King of Ceylon” (“Ceylon” meaning Sri Lanka). I was the first artist ever from Sri Lanka to place on the U.S. Billboard Charts, and I had a #1 on MTV's Most Popular Music Videos, plus 6 #1 hits in Sri Lanka. I don’t say all this to brag; this is my story. In 2016, I decided to retire from “DeLon" so I could start in a new and different direction that I’d always been interested in — singing and playing guitar. I recently released an acoustic singing album called 3.14, which you can check out on Spotify, and I have another album slated to release this year. What theme does your album “3.14” hold? What does the name of the album mean to you? 3.14 stands for the mathematical pi, which to me represents the theme in life that everything comes around full circle. In my life, I began making music, I later achieved fame (as DeLon), and then several years ago, I lost literally everything: my car, my home, my money, and for awhile, my purpose. I then of course picked myself up, and started again. I reinvented my music career — not to mention myself — and I created more albums as Dilan Jay. So my album 3.14 not only represents the evolution of life that I think we all experience, but the sequence of songs on 3.14 are written and laid out to illustrate this growth-decay-rebirth cycle. Can you dive into your writing process for the track “Kick Back”? I was sitting with my producer, and at the time I was so exhausted from working that all I needed was 15 minutes to sleep on the couch. Just the idea of needing to kick back for 5 minutes, you know? He grabbed the guitar, played some chords, and I just started singing — and that’s how quickly the song was born. We wrote the entire song in just 20 minutes, just talking about how crazy life is and needing a minute to relax from it all. This was the fastest-written song on the album. What do the lyrics in “Better Days” mean to you? What inspired this song? I wrote “Better Days” after I had lost everything in my life, and there was only one thing that kept me going: sheer hope. So this song is for anyone who needs to believe that better days are yet to come, because I can tell you that if you persevere and work hard, things will get better. What do you hope your fans take away from the album “3.14”? I want fans to realize that life does come around full circle in time. 3.14 illustrates my real, true journey of being sad, to being super happy, to an “I don’t care what others think about me, I’m going to do my own thing now” attitude. You can start in one place, and then you can realize that simply: you are who you are. People gotta love you for that. And if they don’t? Then screw them. The songs on 3.14 are written in this full-circle order, too, so fans listening to this album will be taken through an evolution of life’s ups and downs that I imagine we all experience. No matter where you are right now, things will come around for you. I’m proof of that, and I want my music to inspire others to believe in themselves and keep going. What are you currently working on? We can’t wait to hear more! I'm working on releasing my first 3 music videos for 3.14. I'll also be releasing my next album very soon, and then of course, my tour is on the horizon for 2020 which is very exciting!
