Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your career as a musician! Well firstly, thank you for the opportunity to be on your platform. And to get right into it, I was born and raised in Jamaica and moved to Toronto when I was 18. Two years after moving there I met some guys and we all had an interest in music. Initially it was just listening but then, as all young kids do, we tried our hand at making it. Our first songs looking back were not the greatest to say the least, but we got positive feedback and that essentially fueled the fire to what became KANM Crew, which is our musical collective. Overtime life got in the way of group aspirations but I was still passionate so i kept going on my own. My rap name is MG the realest. The "MG" stands for Misunderstood Genius because I do feel like I am that. I'm still in the beginning stages of my career. I really don't know how to really begin outside of making the music. The getting my music out there to a visible audience is my biggest hindrance right now. What inspired you to begin rapping? Like I said, we were all passionate about music and we all decided to give it a go. It's everyone's dream to be able to create and have people love and admire that creation I think, Or maybe that's unique to a specific subset of people that were really made for this music thing. I don't know but I just know that when I hear an instrumental, my mind goes into a trance and I have to write and record. There's something therapeutic and amazing about having a thought, extending that thought, making it rhyme, and also flow over an instrumental.  The act of making words rhyme is my inspiration if that makes sense. Love the new single "Heard". Can you tell us a little bit about the creation process of the song? Yeah. So Heard is essentially a song about my aspirations to make it in the music business and how, in my mind, when I make it I won't change who I am even though my circumstances have changed. Secondly its about my belief that i have the talent, intellect and perseverance to make it in the first place. It's also about being skeptical of the people that weren't really supportive but when you make it, they all want to come around. So like I said, I had all these thoughts and I heard the instrumental, which is from one of my favorite Toronto producers "6ixsounds" and the words just poured out. I had the thoughts and I made it rhyme and created a song that I personally think is very good. What inspired you to write the song? What is the meaning of "Heard" to you? For me, the instrumental is the inspiration, because the melody, snare drums etc pull the ideas out of me. I never write before hearing an instrumental because the instrumental is the most integral part for me when making the song. It sets the tone and molds my thoughts for the final product, which in all honesty is usually a surprise. It's almost as though, something takes over and then I wake up and the song is done. What's the Toronto music scene like? Are you performing live? Since the success of Drake and the Weeknd, followed by all the other major artists like Nav, Roy Woods, Party Next Door etc. Toronto has set itself up as a premier musical hub and I think it's fantastic. The sound of the city however, outside of the well known people isn't necessarily for me though. People like pressa and others, don't really do it for me musically but with that being said I'm glad they give the city shine and for that i'm grateful for them. In regards to me personally, Whats under underground? Because that would be me! I haven't done any shows but i'm definitely open to it, if the opportunity arose. What's next for you through 2019? My plan for 2019 is to try and up my visibility. I have the music and I know my sound is something people would gravitate towards. I just need to be seen and heard and that's why for 2019 my motive is definitely to go hard with putting myself out there because it would be a shame to keep the best unheard rapper under wraps forever. So you’ve obviously been singing forever, but it wasn’t until your senior year of high school that you started to take music seriously. How did that come about, and what clicked in your mind? I was really into sports when I was younger. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I realized my future in sports was not going to work out, so I switched my energy to music - learning the guitar and starting to sing more and more. I wrote my first song while a freshman at Texas A&M (2001), and then had my first paying gig in 2002. You’ve just released “House of the Rising Sun”, and you definitely bring something new to the table for a song that’s very famous already. How did this song come about, and what prompted your decision to sing Amazing Grace in the middle? "House of the Rising Sun" was one of the first songs that I learned to play. It wasn't until years later that my mother-in-law requested me to sing it while we were sitting around a bonfire. Since then, I've been playing it out at my live show, and have had a great response. I think sometimes, in country music especially, there aren't a lot of "big moments" in songs. I wanted a "big moment" where I could really showcase my voice, and this songs lends well to that. As for the "Amazing Grace" snippet in the middle of the song, that was kind of a fluke. My wife and I were in the car and I started playing around the lyrics for "Amazing Grace". Once I sang it with the "House of the Rising Sun" melody, my wife told me that it sounded awesome, so I tried to come up with a way to incorporate it in the song. Who would you say are your biggest artistic influences? What inspires you to write? My biggest artistic influences are the country greats - George Strait, Merle Haggard, Garth Brooks, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash. I love that traditional country sound, but I also like to "rough it up" a little bit by adding a rasp or growl, electric guitar and/or a little Southern rock. We are on the road most of the year. Last year I played 172 shows, coast to coast. My writing partner and manager, Jamie McKean, is always by my side. Most of the ideas we get for our songs come from our travels. It might be someone we meet, a story we hear, something we see or read along the way or a place we have visited while on the road. Would you briefly walk us through what your creative process is like? We have been fortunate in that we have written with some great songwriters in Nashville. Before we moved to Nashville this past year, we would come up for about a week every other month to write. Normally, Jamie and I meet with another songwriter or two at a Nashville writing room. We bounce song ideas around, and whatever idea everyone in the room agrees on is the direction we start with. Sometimes the idea gets turned around, totally left behind and/or switched from chorus to verse, but it gives us a direction. What can we hope to see from Cody Joe Hodges in the future? Great things! I am constantly working - gigging year-round, focusing on songwriting, and meeting some great people.  I'm really excited about some of the new material that we've been working on, and about some new touring possibilities. The Sophisticated Psychos is a New York City based creative partnership consisting of poet-producer Kyriaki and producer-songwriter Nicky Scorpio. The duo met in a recording studio in Hell’s Kitchen in 2012, and they have since focused on building a lifestyle and brand centered around wellness. They create music to “celebrate anxiety, depression, and most importantly, ourselves.” They have just released a new video for their self-produced song “Belligerent”, which Nicky describes as “acknowledging that we are all hypocrites - we say we want peace and choose chaos. Most artists are using their platforms for negativity and false lifestyles - but we are the faces of the new generation who don’t agree with the fear and negativity that is force fed to us and don’t want to be told that we’re wrong anymore.” The Sophisticated Psychos latest single “Belligerent” is a dramatic single that encompasses a wide variety of emotional content. There are topics of hypocrisy, anger, dissatisfaction and most importantly, overcoming these things. The vocals are unique and unconventional, but it suits the vibe of this song perfectly. The contrast between male and female vocals is pervasive throughout the song and provides some welcome variety. The overall feeling of the song is one of eccentricity, and this dynamic duo definitely bring some unique flavors to the table! Would you two mind describing your background(s) and how you first got involved in music? Kyriaki and Nicky both come a come from a musical family. If there wasn’t music playing someone was singing. It was really when Nicky first heard Tupac’s voice and his message that he realized he could tell stories through music. Who would you say your biggest artistic inspirations are? Nicky - Tupac and The Beatles, more so the energy they had and how they made (and still make) people feel. Nicky appreciates anyone who is artistically not afraid to make bold statements, even if they disagree or don’t understand. Kyriaki - Sade, classical music, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Stevie Nicks, all of the Oldies, to name a few! “Belligerent” is quite the emotional journey, how did this song come about? Nicky produced, wrote & recorded this song on the islands of Greece.  After seeing how a culture that is going through hard times is so beautiful and much happier than most Americans because of their community, their family and then seeing the complete opposite in a place like Los Angeles, where people are always looking for the bigger and better deal. No loyalty. The other aspect for Nicky is that he is tired of the older generation disrespecting the younger generation simply because we do not subscribe to old-fashioned and hypocritical beliefs. P.S. clicking an angry face on Facebook will not make a change. In general, would you describe what your writing process is like? We channel messages and melodies. Thank God for smart phones so it’s easy to capture the art in the moment.. Nicky does very well writing lyrics and songs when he is in motion & traveling. Overall, all our songs are focused on a theme of being true to yourself, being okay with being awkward, or different, and talking about uncomfortable things we all share in common and celebrating ourselves as we are! Where did you get the inspiration to write “wish you were dead”? “I wish you were dead, so I didn’t have to hate you and I could just miss you instead”.  This was the first line of a diary entry after experiencing major heartbreak a few years ago.  My experience of it felt like going through the stages of grief like you would if someone passed.  But trying to navigate the minefield of a broken heart was like running blind.  How could I mourn the loss when the person was still living and breathing, just choosing to live without me? That’s the place the song started from. Not so much a vengeful wish of death, but more so a self preservation of wanting to be able to miss that person instead of hate them.  I felt pretty vulnerable and nervous about sharing this one as it is so personal to me, but I’ve had such an amazing response so far of people resonating Music to me feels like my contribution to creating a better world.  Finding ways to relate to large amounts of people, using sound and lyricism to transport a listener to the inside of their heart.  We listen to music when we are the happiest, the saddest, when we fall in love, when our hearts break, in the best and worst moments.  We listen to feel, to be understood. When people step into their emotions it opens them up and when we have more people on the planet who are in touch with their own personal growth, then we all benefit! So that’s generally the driving inspiration behind me writing and releasing any song :) You said the power of music moved you beyond the heartache and into a positive mindset. Do you always tap into personal experiences when writing music? I often draw from personal experience to tell my stories.  I have had quite the full life already, so there are always plenty of moments to draw from.  If I am feeling like a challenge I do love to  write from the perspective of a “character”.  In that way by adapting to the way of thinking of a character I’ve created, I’m able to write from completely new angles and experiences that aren’t necessarily my own. Who are you listening to currently that inspires to create your own content? To be honest I’m sometimes a little behind on new music! I’m such a fan of the old classics from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s,  that I find myself listening to my favourites all the time.  However I have been following the journey of Billie Eilish lately, she’s really fascinating and I admire her authenticity to her self! Lana Del Rey has always been a favourite of mine.  Years ago I checked her out after a few people had pointed out similarities in our voices! I definitely found that to be a massive compliment! I As an artist what space do you create for yourself to allow your creativity flourish? I definitely allow myself to be a bit of a hermit if I feel the need to be.  Usually when I crave nights at home, feeling less social, my mind has trouble sleeping, then I know I’m in a super creative period.  I just roll with it, I take the time to give space for the magic to happen.  I’ve made myself a little home studio with everything I could need...fairy lights, recording equipment, speakers, keys, electric and acoustic guitar, plenty of pens/notebooks and a heart full of inspiration.  My kitten always loves to join me in there.  But then there are also times where inspiration will hit randomly while I’m walking somewhere and I have to do the awkward quiet voice memo!  So I guess I just welcome creativity in always, I will always have the space for it and make the time to let it flourish. What are you hoping the next year brings to your career and growth as an artist? I’m going to keep releasing music and videos all year.  I have so much ready to share, so get ready! I grew up in a musical family, my dad plays the guitar and writes songs, so he would play and sing a lot. Thank you! I was inspired to write Summer of Love after watching the movie " My King" one night (french movie starring Vincent Cassel, Emmanuelle Bercot) . The first scene shows the love and hate between us kind of similar how my break transpired also showed me stressing in the midst of things then show me rising above that getting a grasp on my career because it was either that or this while still being lost in the “Time Zone” as in my life I shot the visual in another Time Zone the break up happen in Baton Rouge my hometown and the visual was shot in Los Angeles. What was the impact that interview you had with Jermaine Dupri on Revolt TV have on your career? It didn’t impact my career at all but personal it impacted me a lot it gave me the motivation and inspired me to get the people in my city to support my music so I started putting together shows that did 100+ every time. What’s next for you? Being a full time artists quitting my 9 to 5 going on the road touring and creating a lot of dope music. ILLICIT is a rock band from the Ontario area of Canada. The band was started by vocalist/ guitarist Jordan Cantwell and drummer/vocalist Fadi Khoshaba in February 2017. After replying to a kijiji ad, guitarist Zak Taylor and bassist Dan Martin joined the group. Recently the band added third guitarist Jason Macdonald to the line-up making them a five piece. The five piece band instantly began performing music and released their first EP in May 2018 titled “Lost Days”. We listened to the electrifying record entitled “Lost Days” off their EP alongside watching the video, and we were highly impressed with the thrilling guitar riffs, refined drumming skills, and hypnotic vocals! The cleverly-written lyrics had this interesting contextual meaning behind it that studied the listener as much as we studied them! Around the 2:30 time measure of the song they give us an instrumental break that begins with a more subdued, muffled sound for a few seconds before the banging and explosive instruments all fuses together. Showcasing their badass caliber of guitar and drums, the track then transitions back into their enigmatic vocals that releases a string of sonic waves into our bodies! The balance between soft and bashful in dynamics were super trailblazing making “Lost Days” an incredible endlessly-playable hit! Jordan (Lead Vocals/Guitar): Musically I think the riff I had came out from listening to heavier tracks by bands like Stone Sour or even Heavier Nickelback songs. There some great riffs in that style of heavy rock music, so I just wanted to contribute to that. Lyrically the song talks about those days where you were just bummed out or not very optimistic. Fadi (Lead Vocals/Drums): Lost Days is about time felt like you’ve lost from life passing by so quickly.  Feeling like you get older the longer you stress. Zak (Guitarist): Well Jordan wrote the chorus and I took some time to come with a good idea as a separate riff to compliment the main riff. JASON (Guitarist): I was impressed by the eccentricities of the songs written when I joined the band. Dan (Bass/Vocals):What inspired me was the prospect of the whole recording process. The recording inspired me to write it something interesting. When creating the video to “Lost days” what was the overall vision and storyline you aimed to present? Fadi: The overall direction of the shoot was kind of unknown to us throughout working with Nick Iden because of how spontaneous the project was. By the end of the ideas and recordings, we tied it to the song. Dan: We knew we wanted to have some sort of a chase scene from the start though. Jordan: It was really fun to get chased around by all the dudes in the band and I also I enjoyed falling in the dirt for a scene or two. I think that I would make to be a decent action star. Tell us a little bit about the EP and what we can expect from it? Jordan: You can definitely expect a little more experimental approach to what we’re working on compared to what we first released. We’re messing around and creating our own personality to the songs. We have grown so much as far as our writing goes. One thing that hasn’t changed is our sense of humour. We’re still not funny. Jason: As we’re practising, we’re experimenting. I’m excited to hear how the songs are going to be from starting to finishing a track. Ian and APE Audio is wicked to work with and I know how these songs will turn out and even more excited to play it live. Dan: What you can expect are some really flushed out songs with super catchy choruses. I would also say some straight bangers! Zak: It’s more of a polished writing style then the first E.P we’ve done. Do you guys face any challenges in creating music that fits each member’s expectations and vision for the band? Jordan: My main goal when I write songs is that I just want to write a cool and catchy song that stick in your head. A tune that you remember for days whether it’s a poppy or a heavy tune. I think we all share the same goal as far as that goes but we all add our own style to the song idea and we’ll riff it out in the practise room. Jason: For me personally, I don’t think we have any obstacles. Each of our taste very to each person so we all bring something different to the table when creating something new. One obstacle we might face is trying to get all of our ideas organized for the songs. Fadi: There are barriers and challenges every band has to face when dealing with what each member play. The writing process for me is about expressing yourself in the ideas you bring to the table to create what you’d love as music. Dan: I would say no. It doesn’t seem very different to write music everybody likes. We're compatible that way. Zak: It can though be a struggle to balance the three guitars. What's next for you through 2019? Jordan: I just want to get our music out there to as many people as possible. Jason: Aside from the E.P, playing as many shows as we possibly can and getting a lock down on merch. Dan: Lots of show presence. Playing a lot of shows. New and different music. Fadi: Other than great music, the possibility of a sexy photoshoot for a calendar. The Como Brothers band is a refreshing group I haven’t seen in a while. They released their single titled “Diamonds On My Chain” and it shows elements of jazz, soul, pop, and R&B. All fused together to make one jam-packed 2 minute and 45 second hit record! Matt and Andrew Como, are musicians (singers, songwriters and performers) from Long Island who are passionate about their music with heartfelt lyrics, and an original sound. Combining a pop and rock easy listening tune with a blues vibe, they have written and recorded multiple albums and EP’s of original songs. The Como Brothers have had songs being featured in TV shows such as E! Networks Keeping Up with the Kardashians, MTV's The Real World, and The Oxygen Channel's Best Ink among many others! Establishing themselves as artists. They collaborated with the iconic Sam Woolfe, A singer-songwriter known for his original compositions and pitch perfect vocals, Sam has been hailed as a "natural singer whose soul and passion are undeniable in every note he sings." Together The Como Brothers curate the hit “Diamonds On My Chain” with an addicting hook, “you bring me up, to put me down” “Why should I worry? Why should I care?” and it isn’t the lyrics that makes the hook so addicting but the melody that’s so funky yet contemporary you just can’t help but want to sing along. I noticed how each of them have a slight different vocal style yet the way they fused all 3 styles together was almost effortless. They made “Diamonds On My Chain” not feel like a collaboration but more so as a union. They were able to work so well together where you can tell each individual artist apart yet listen to this song in one unit like it was one artist singing from start to finish. That chemistry blended superbly well on the record, and I believe artists nowadays tend to compete with one another on collaborative projects instead of supporting. Our names are Andrew and Matt, and we're The Como Brothers. We're a singer/songwriter pop duo from Long Island, NY. Como Brothers, when did you guys begin creating music? Sam, how about yourself? We started writing our own songs in high school. Writing is our favorite thing ever. We always strive to write songs that are both meaningful and catchy at the same time. The thrill of creating music never gets old. We want to make music that will resonate with people's hearts while getting stuck in their heads. Sam's been singing since he was a little kid. Care to share one of your favorite musical career highlights? There are so many moments I could cite for different reasons. However, playing in a Beatles tribute band with my Uncle Lawrence and dad when I was in high school is something that I'll cherish forever. As a 16 year old kid, there was nothing better than playing with my two heroes every weekend. How did the idea of you and Sam Woolf collaborating on "Diamonds on My Chain" come about? Diamonds came about as we were all finishing up another song that we were recording together called "Twisted". Our ultimate goal is to have songs on top of the charts one day, and I was really loving how Twisted came out. I was super excited about it while simultaneously feeling a little down thinking "I hope people like it". I went to my room and Diamonds On My Chain just flowed out. "Why should I worry? Why should I care? I'm going here, sitting down, looking 'round, Diamonds On My Chain". It was a little cocky joke to myself reaffirming that we're going to succeed. I showed it to the guys, and they loved it. They helped polish it up, and we recorded it. What are some major difference in styles and opinions between the three of you? We all have very similar influences and listen to very similar type of music. There aren't very big differences in style between us. What is your artist interpretation of your single “Diamonds On My Chain” ? It's a song about believing in yourself. It reaffirms that I'm going to achieve my dreams in an over-the-top way. I'm no rapper by any means, but I love rap music. I listened to rap & hip-hop music exclusively during middle school. Eminem, 50 Cent, G-Unit, The Game, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Notorious BIG, NAS, Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West, The Roots, etc. Lyrically, Diamonds On My Chain felt like it could have been from that 1995-2004 era of hip-hop, so we just went with that vibe. Sam has that John Legend kind of voice, so it really fit perfect to have him sing the hook. We had a lot fun recording that song. It was almost a competition; how ridiculous can we get? We don't come from money, we don't have diamonds, and we don't have chains...so the concept is ridiculous for us. But we just stepped into that role and had a lot of fun. We don't take ourselves very seriously, but we had fun pretending that we do on this song. What is not ridiculous is the underlying message of the song; I'm going to succeed at my dreams and make it. What can we expect from Como Brothers in the near future? We're going to be releasing a single every 2 months starting with our new song "One and Only" on April 15th. We have a lyric video that we'll be putting out for "One and Only" as well. We put out a live video of "One and Only" in late 2018 and it's gone viral in the Philippines.
