  • Take A Trip To Fourth Born’s “Heartbreak Retreat”

James Stephens, also known as Fourth Born, is an alternative folk artist from Wasaga Beach, Ontario. His songwriting journey began at 14, leading to a performance career around Greater Toronto. In 2020, as the pandemic caused a shift in his musical journey, James sought financial stability in the forestry industry of British Columbia. Living amidst Canada's wilderness ignited a spark of inspiration in him, guiding his sound toward a folk-like sound. Beyond singing and songwriting, Stephens' skills extend to mixing and music production. His latest 8-track album, "Heartbreak Retreat," harnesses the aura of a cedarwood cabin near Nelson, BC. This body of work signifies a debut into an alternative folk era for Fourth Born — and it's one you won't want to miss. "Heartbreak Retreat" is an auditory journey of introspection, reflecting Fourth Born's life experiences and his bond with nature. The album beautifully captures the authentic folk essence from Stephens' introspection within South Eastern BC's quiet, deep woods. The opening track, "My Soul," graces the soundscape with its acoustic guitar melody, followed by subtle banjo strumming. With a rich tone, he sings the lyrics, "Your soul is young and alive, and mine's like the radio," - It captures a duality of yearning and acceptance, setting the stage for this intimate journey. The fifth track, "Future Plans," introduces an uplifting guitar melody that crescendos into James' evocative lyrics: "Even though I'm strong, there are still some things that I need- like food or sleep," and "when you'd run your hands through mine, and talk of future plans for life." This song encapsulates the complexities of grief — the strength to endure and a yearning for previously shared aspirations in a past connection. Through this melodic storytelling, Fourth Born shines a light on this bitter-sweet reminiscing often associated with Heartbreak. Welcome to BuzzMusic, James, and congratulations on your latest release, "Heartbreak Retreat." How has transitioning to a more secluded lifestyle affected your approach to songwriting? I would say the lifestyle change has influenced my approach to writing significantly. I started out writing as a young teen - Maybe 14 years old. I remember constantly feeling at a loss when it came to writing topics. I could carry a tune and had good friends in a band. But no life experience. My first album was based entirely on a fictional character. Which, of course, has been taken off the shelf a long while ago (I was just learning how to mix music) Last Cigarette and Masters of Disguise are both songs of irony based on toxic relationships. And The Snow EP is a collective of songs I had written as a teen, with some newer songs in there as well. The snow ep is definitely closer to something personal. But there's definitely some fictitious overlap in the writing (based on the character I started developing in my first album). Anyway, when I sat down alone in the cabin - after just living my life and taking some exciting risks. The only topic I could think of was me. Who am I? What am I feeling? Why am I feeling it? Moving out on my own and in such a nomadic way has developed a lot of character in me. And so now I have my own life to write about. This album is just who I am and what I was going through in 2022. And I plan to write like that moving forward. Writing has never come so easily to me. There's still much to work on as a writer regarding vulnerability and tightening my new approach. But I'm thrilled to have gotten to a place where I write about my life in a literal sense. What's the significance of the title "Heartbreak Retreat?" I would say the significance of the title "Heartbreak Retreat" is just how literal it is. I went through a breakup, broke my heart, and then retreated to the mountains of BC, over 4500 km away. I started renting out a cabin to seclude and work on myself so I could figure out my life. I was meditating heavily and put myself to work in the West Canadian forestry industry. Walk us through your process when creating "Heartbreak Retreat." Did the album begin with a central concept, or did it unfold organically as each song was produced? The process of this album began as soon as the break up was coming to fruition back in January 2022. I was driving from Ontario to my and my previous partner's apartment in Quebec when "My Soul" butted its way into my head repeatedly. The breakup happened so fast, and we had such a lovely relationship. I abruptly moved out west afterward, and I then spent six months working super hard and not writing at all until I got back to the cabin I had picked up in November. That's when I started writing the remainder of this album's songs. The songs are pretty much in the exact order I wrote them in. It felt less like creative songwriting and more like writing in a journal this time. It truly is just an album outlining my journey through processing heartbreak. I think the simplicity in that hits home for me. I can listen back and appreciate and now feel thankful for what I went through. Which of the eight tracks in "Heartbreak Retreat" would you consider your favorite? My favorite track is probably "Who," which is track number 2 and the first song I wrote in the cabin. The reason I love this track is because it's just so honest. I mean, I like to think all my writing is honest. But "Who" really just nails it for me in terms of describing what it feels like to feel heartbroken. We all want connection, to feel loved, and to love someone. One of the biggest universal questions we all bear in our psyches is: Who? Do you see yourself continuing down this path of alternative folk music, or do you plan to experiment with other genres? Yes, I think the alt-folk genre is an excellent platform for me to be more vulnerable with my songwriting. This isn't a very commercial release; most of my stuff isn't. But it helped me personally to be able to put my thoughts and feelings into song. Regardless of the success of this music, writing, and recording, it has done more for me than I could have ever asked for. As for other genres, of course. Last Cigarette is my most successful track, and people still praise it when complimenting my music. I already have some songs in the works that emulate Last Cigarette's sound. I also write instrumental tracks for sync licensing opportunities. Cinematic, corporate, commercial jingle kind of stuff. There really is no limit to what I'll take a crack at. I've cultivated the skills and equipment throughout my twenties toward being surrounded by the options to create. If I can land in a market, then that's awesome. If not, I'm still super happy to be able to do what I do when I can find the time in my off-seasons. Instagram Facebook

  • Embrace The Edge And Raw Catharsis Of Hillsboro’s Single, “Dissolve”

Hillsboro, emerging in 2019 from the depths of the Pacific Northwest, brings forth a raw and unorthodox musical journey. Nima Walker's initial bedroom demos evolved into a distinctive blend of bone-buzzing distortion, haunting violin wizardry courtesy of Dexter Hodgins, and an infectious rhythm section comprising Oliver Hollingshead, Tucker Hoey, and Samuel Wells. Their live prowess, lauded as the best in their local scene, has seen them open for notable acts and earned them The Zone's Band of the Month accolades. Their music provides an outlet for catharsis and vulnerability, echoing the turmoil of today's world while offering a glimmer of escape. Their sound celebrates the thrill of narrowly avoiding disaster and shares it openly with a community unafraid to confront pain, making Hillsboro a compelling force in the contemporary music landscape. Being the antidote to indie music's predictable confines, their latest single, "Dissolve," from the self-titled debut album "HILLSBORO," is a thrilling testament to their boundary-pushing ethos. This edgy and melodic indie-pop rock band isn't here to play it safe. They've just dropped a mesmerizing music video for "Dissolve," a visual spectacle. "Dissolve" delves deep into the melodrama of '90s emo and grungy pop, carving out a sonic space where Hillsboro thrives on extremes. Frontman Nima Walker's journey of assembling journal entries and drum machine-laden demos over three turbulent years culminated in this unapologetically maximalist masterpiece. The band's unconventional approach of recording instrumentally before deciding on lyrics pays off in spades, allowing their ethereal fiddle melodies to shine. Hillsboro's collective synergy is undeniable. They eschew traditional guitar heroics in favor of a tight-knit unit, allowing Walker and drummer Oliver Holingshead's textured production to envelop their recordings. This refreshing DIY approach sets them apart from the indie crowd, and they're unafraid to challenge the status quo. The music video for "Dissolve" is a mood-driven masterpiece that seamlessly blends elements of early shoegaze with a dash of Y2K nostalgia reminiscent of games like Silent Hill. It's a visual journey that perfectly complements the song's emotional intensity. Hillsboro isn't just a band; they're an immersive experience, pushing the boundaries of sound and visuals on their terms. With a west-coast American tour on the horizon, it's clear that Hillsboro is a force to be reckoned with in the indie scene. "Dissolve" is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their art and fans. Take the chance and join them on this sonic adventure. Your music video for "Dissolve" blends elements of shoegaze and Y2K nostalgia, which we adore. Can you tell us about the creative process behind the video and what inspired its unique visual style? We went out to this abandoned mansion with a couple of hours of town with Pablo Garcia, who directed the video. We explored and found all kinds of weird stuff. Towards the end, we thought it would be a good idea to shoot off some fireworks inside and almost die. The style comes down to Pablo's direction and editing, but we all love the look of old video games like Silent Hill. The entirety of "HILLSBORO" has been compared to the work of veteran counterparts regarding recording quality. What steps did you take to achieve such high production standards independently? Honestly, it was a lot of trial and error, just recording stuff repeatedly until it sounded right. We all produce in the band, so that helps. Jon Epworth, who mixed/mastered the album, also lent us some nice gear to use at home, which was sick. With "Dissolve" being your mood-driven track, how do you channel your emotions and experiences into your music? What do you hope listeners take away from this particular song? It's not really something we think about. If it feels moving to us when we make it, then we trust our emotions are coming through. With the lyrics, it's a little more deliberate. I'm always writing little things down as I experience things, and those get collaged into song lyrics, sometimes years later. I don't know if I have anything specific listeners should take away. I just hope it helps people feel better. Your approach to recording, with instrumentals first and lyrics later, is unconventional but successful. How did this process contribute to the overall sound and emotion of the song? That way of working puts you in a mood first; then, the lyrics come to match or push against whatever that vibe is. It lets us find an emotion without being limited by words cause they suck. It feels the most natural to me. What can listeners expect from the rest of "HILLSBORO?" How does it define you as a band? The album varies quite a bit in style, but it's all unmistakably us. There are just a ton of ideas that found their way in there, and if you listen closely, it's pretty dense. I don't want to think about defining the band too much; it gets in the way of making more good music. I think this album is like a prologue; it's a diary of a specific time in our lives, which has been super important, but I don't think it will make any sense until we keep living some more and make some more albums. • Caprice Soleil Opens Up On The Creation Of "BLVCK RAIN"

Congrats on another banger in the bag with "BLVCK RAIN,” which has a haunting and vampiric tone. Can you walk us through the production process behind the song and the inspiration behind its sound? Thank you for having me. BLVCK RAIN is a single from my recent album "LIFE+MOSH." When I made the song, it was a rainy summer night in 2021 at my condo downtown Kitchener where I had my kitchen studio setup. I was feeling super motivated going through beats and once I pulled up this one my homie sent me. It just had the perfect vibe for how I was feeling at the time so I recorded the song and had it finished in under an hour. I’ve been songwriting, producing, and engineering my own music since 2012 so I feel that I’m finally at a point where I can create complex arrangements that sound polished and well-produced. How does your experience as a producer and engineer influence your approach to writing and recording your own music, particularly on tracks like "BLVCK RAIN"? My experience as a producer/engineer makes it easier for me to think critically about my own work, I'm still learning new things every time I open Ableton even after 10 years of using it, but my process has become faster and less complicated. As far as songwriting I find that I’ve been using the punch-in method a lot more these days when it comes to recording vocals. Rather than sitting down and writing songs to instrumentals for hours at a time, I just pull up the beat and freestyle the first thing that comes to my head and branch off of that with different flows and melodies. With that being said I’m not always content to simply recording a song and leaving it at that, sometimes I go back to a song after months and alter some things whether it's a verse or a certain 808 I chose to use. The music video for "BLVCK RAIN" features a lot of dark, surreal imagery. What was the concept behind the video, and how did you work with director Az Heatley to bring it to life? Me and Az have been good homies for a while now, whenever we get together, it’s easy for us to come up with dope ideas to bounce off each other. With this video, he had the perfect location worked out. The haunting instrumental and subject matter inspired me to take a dark, surreal, and horror-influenced direction with the music video. I first began searching for a gothic / castle location to shoot at (which proved hard to find in Ontario) and eventually came across the Screaming Heads castle. Inspired by druids and ancient Britain, the sprawling landscapes and various sculptures that include a giant head, a two-headed fire-breathing dragon and hundreds of screaming stone faces make up an art display that is both mysterious and frightening. I instantly fell in love with the place, and despite the lengthy four-hour journey, I was determined to shoot at this location. We luckily ran into the artist and owner himself, who allowed us access into private areas and even let us shoot on the roof of the castle which was where he lived at the time. The visuals that followed are soaked in medieval, horror, gothic, and fantasy undertones. The metaphorical "black rain" being a darkened mindset that has its grasp on the artist Caprice Soleil, isolated in a surreal landscape with nothing but his thoughts and demons. I chose black and white to evoke an old cinematic and horror feel that paired well with the dreary and atmospheric location. The analog VHS scenes shot on Hi-8 tape lend nods to found footage flicks such as The Blair Witch Project. Other inspirations include the 1970s Lord of the Rings animation (which features on the video's title card and in other quick flashes during the video). The entire project was shot on a zero-dollar budget with a skeleton crew.” - Az Heatley You've mentioned planning a DIY tour with support from punk and hardcore bands. How do you see your music fitting into these genres, and what can fans expect from your live performances? About a year ago I started working with the homies at No Funeral & Smiling Friend Records and it's been super beneficial for me to get involved in the punk scene, it creates a platform for me to reach new audiences who have never been exposed to my music before. You can tell the shared passion for music and performance creates a connection between the artists and the audience, and that’s what I love about it. I can see a lot of my music fitting into these genres easily because a lot of projects I work on are more dark and hard-hitting. As I was growing up, my dad was actually a guitarist in a band, so I listened to a lot of different bands such as Green Day, System of A Down, Jimi Hendrix, Tool, and Bob Dylan, all at a very young age. Performing has always been fun & easy for me I always try to engage with the crowd as much as I can and keep it interesting considering I’m a 1 man band. When I was young, I was a model for The Bay magazine and also did some acting on TV shows for Treehouse & YTV so I feel like doing that really helped eliminate the nervous stage fright anxiety feeling that most artists deal with before performances. Your music has been described as a pastiche of different genres and styles. How do you see yourself continuing to innovate and push boundaries in your music in the future? I've always been drawn to a variety of genres and musical styles, so it's natural that my music would reflect that. When getting in the studio I never really have a plan in mind I kind of just go with the flow of how I’m feeling that day, I love experimenting with different sounds and textures, and finding ways to blend them together in unexpected ways. With that being said I’m always trying to evolve, whether it's getting new studio equipment or learning how to make beats and chop up samples better. Instagram

A fiercely passionate artist whose undeniable talent has seen him build a loyal following for himself, his ability to capture the heart and the mind through his delightful musical offerings has seen his stock rise as he looked to cement his legacy in the scene. As he continues to push his craft even further, de Brito seems like he’s positioned himself for a breakout run, and his ascent seems almost inevitable. Originally from Portugal, the artist Andre de Brito would split his time between the vibrant cities of Lisbon, London, and Los Angeles, which are united by a shared possession of rich musical spirit. His music has been played in radio stations in places as diverse as the USA, UK, Netherlands, and France (among others), showing the much-coveted ability to make music so good it transcends trivial things like language and national lines. Driven by the desire to continue making music that touches his audience on a deeper level, de Brito’s releases continue to be imbued with an underlying passion that’s becoming increasingly hard to resist. “Queen of Spades” is one of those releases that feels like quintessential Andre de Brito. The track begins with the gentle sound of the waves washing over the shore, instantly draining your stress away before a vibrant beat kicks in and gets you in the groove. Accompanied by a gorgeous black and white music video shot on the beach, de Brito strums his guitar as he dances and walks with his female companion, his “Queen of Spades.” Triumphantly singing, “No matter what we do/ No matter what we say / No one can take this love away,” “Queen of Spades” is not just a song. Whenever you’re ready for some liberating new music, tap in and stream Andre de Brito’s release “Queen of Spades,” available on all majour streaming platforms. We were captivated by your latest release, "Queen of Spades." It's a delightful and liberating addition to your repertoire. Please share with us your initial vision for this release. "Queen of Spades" holds a special place in my heart as it is a single and inspired album of the same name. I recorded this track during the summer of 2020, and the music video was shot in October of that same year. Initially, I created a pop record heavily influenced by disco, funk, and house music. However, as time passed and I continued composing and releasing new singles, the album's concept evolved. Ultimately, it took on a dual personality, one deeply rooted in dance music and another embracing a more intimate, introspective vibe. What aspect of the creative process do you find most exhilarating when crafting a release? For me, the entire process of composition and recording is incredibly exhilarating. While some musicians prefer the stage, I'm drawn to the soul-searching and constant generation of musical ideas in the studio. I enjoy playing various musical instruments but am always open to collaborating with fellow artists. Creating an entire album on your own can be a monumental task. In future releases, I plan to collaborate with a band in the studio to make the process more manageable if the opportunity arises. How would you define the quintessential Andre de Brito release? If I encapsulate the essence of an Andre de Brito release, it would undoubtedly be musical diversity. I enjoy blending various musical genres and embarking on different creative paths. While I understand that from a commercial standpoint, crafting an album with such diversity may only sometimes be the most conventional approach, my mind is constantly inundated with artistic ideas that are sometimes difficult to contain. If your audience could take away just one thing from your music, what would you hope it to be? I want my listeners to embrace the concept of musical diversity. Creating an album that traverses diverse musical landscapes might seem unconventional in an era where everything is meticulously categorized. However, I find it challenging to control the influx of artistic ideas in my mind, and this diversity is what makes music so rich and intriguing. What's on the horizon for Andre de Brito? Can we anticipate more new music soon, and is there a message you'd like to convey to your fans? I have exciting plans in the pipeline! I'm working on new material and will release a brand-new album next year. I want to reduce the time between my releases and share more music. I'm eager to share my musical journey with you all. I want to express my gratitude to my fans for your unwavering support. Your enthusiasm fuels my creative spirit, and I can't wait to embark on this musical adventure with you. Stay tuned for more captivating tunes shortly! Instagram Facebook

  • Let’s Pause, Breathe, And Reminisce With “27teen” By Monica Moser

As part of her new album "27teen (the beginnings)," Monica Moser, an artist, writer, and podcaster from Texas, takes us on a trip down memory lane with her most recent single, "27teen," released on August 18th. Monica has had a rich experience in music, actively participating in the industry and creating pieces for her audience, which allowed her to find her voice, find her style, and define what she is passionate about. Monica explained: "Over the years, I've learned that I love performing and nothing can compare with that feeling, but that creating something feels infinite." Her jazz/blues and folksy style paired with these amazing lyrics of "27teen" lets you connect with her as an artist; simultaneously, we connect with our past, inner child, or inner teen. This very nostalgic piece allows you to stop for a second and reminisce about all the situations, all the good and the bad that you've lived and are still here. We consider this an empowering, honest, and relatable song. People of all ages, stages, and situations can relate to this song's feelings. Everything we lived in our past has allowed us to become who we are now; being aware of where we've been before is a great mental exercise we feel inspired to do when we listen to this beautiful piece. We're glad we realized how fast time goes and how good it is to pause. Monica Moser and "27teen" have allowed us to do so, and we hope you can, too.
