- The Reminiscent Sounds Of Alice Austin Will “Break The Spell”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alice Austin is known for her long career as a solo artist and a frontwoman for the internationally acclaimed Black Sabbitch. Shaking the airwaves with her latest nostalgic release, "Break the Spell," has AliceAustin offering listeners a genuine glimpse into the sounds and themes of 1985. Knowing this era as one who lived and experienced it first-hand, Alice Austin's perspective sonic lens is riddled with authenticity as we peer inside. Through each melody shed, you can hear her timeless musical influences like Cyndi Lauper and Robyn inspire this dreamy atmosphere we fluidly groove through. The crafted upbeat atmosphere is reminiscent of 80s synth pop as the eclectic glimmers of synths, and moody counterbalance of ambient pads fortify a foundation of a signature 80s hit. Alice Austin lays her poignant croons overtop this colored framework in a way that fully entrances us. The more we breathe in "Break the Spell," we feel the maturity that stems from an experienced life. It's as if Alice Austin has returned in time and shares her knowledge with the teenage version of herself, navigating this ever-changing world. Latching onto her opulent timbres that cascade through reverberations and self-assurance, Alice Austin emanates a mystical ambiance that transports us back in time. Listen to "Break the Spell" today on all major streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Alice Austin, and congratulations on the release of your latest single, "Break the Spell." We love the nostalgic concept that you've placed into this composition. Was there a moment or story that inspired you to approach this song as such? Thanks so much. The feeling of nostalgia in “Break the Spell” came about after I sang backing vocals on a track called “One of Us Now” by Cold Engines. They captured the sense of time and place so well, and it brought me on a journey back in time to revisit some artists and sounds from the 80s that I hadn’t connected with because I was so wrapped up in hair metal and hard rock. I started thinking about the technology and sounds of the time and went deep into the archives. Please share a glimpse into the creative process of bringing this song to life. Did anyone help you craft such an evocative production? I wrote the lyrics on the plane and the music later that night. It felt almost too easy, as though it wrote itself. David Drouin, my producer and friend, loved it and knew how to get it where it wanted. We started with a Juno 60 synthesizer which was an unusual process since we are both primarily guitarists. The keyboard, as the first instrument, separates this album from all of my others, and this has been really exciting to watch develop. If you could pick any musical influence to feature on this song, who would you want it to be and why? Cyndi Lauper, because of her phrasing and melodies. Do you feel that "Break the Spell" fits your mission statement as an artist? Not at all. One of the things I love about being an artist is that I have never felt as though I’ve had to have a mission statement. I’m really whimsical and just follow the ideas. What's next for you? I’m torn between a really minimalist album and a hair metal record, but definitely one of the two, probably both. Instagram Facebook
- Augustine Frees Her Soul From The “Silence”
Haunting our speakers in ethereal melancholia is a singer-songwriter and dark folk recording artist Augustine with her introspective single, “Silence,” from her sophomore album, Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True. Augustine’s sound could be described as an intimate dark folk soundscape with influences from dark wave, rock, folk, experimental music, and medieval soundscapes. With raw, velvety vocals and delicate yet powerful instrumentation, Augustine is proving herself as an artist to watch in 2023. In 2016, she released her debut album, The Devil in Me, which focused on obsessions over failure, dreaming, longing, and love. More recently, the chill-inducing songstress dropped her sophomore album, Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True, featuring seven haunting songs like “Silence,” a somber anthem for the lone wanderer. Drifting into “Silence,” the song softly opens with tender piano melodies that set the emotional, heartfelt, and dark tone. As Augustine’s breathy and soothing vocals float through our speakers, she chills the spine with the emotional and relatable lyricism of feeling isolated and alone due to being a child born from the “Silence.” The entire piece is incredibly cinematic. Augustine’s instrumentals gradually expand from the background to create this melancholy lullaby any listener can appreciate. The haunting vocal melodies and bone-chilling instrumentals give this song an atmosphere like no other. Free your soul from the silence with the help of the captivating stylings of Augustine in her recent release, “Silence,” from her sophomore album, Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True, now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Augustine. Congratulations on releasing your chilling sophomore album, Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True. What was the source of inspiration behind this project? This album, as its title maybe suggests, explores something that I call a “purgatory” state. The songs tell tales of feeling both stuck and bustling with desire and energy, anxious and confident, hopeful and desperate – both feelings being respectively so intense that they cancel each other. I daydream a lot – in fact, I spend most of my time daydreaming. Done so for as long as I can remember. And I fear many things, as well; I’m super anxious. With time, I’ve realized something that both comforts and saddens me: most of the things I fear never actually come to exist or manifest. The same goes for the things I long for. Or at least, when either bad or good things happen, they are never quite like I so intensely imagine them. My dreams and fears live in some interior, introspective space that never reaches reality. They are vivid but trapped. How does track number two, “Silence,” tie into the theme and concept of Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True? “Silence” and all the songs of the album are written from this interior space of dreaming and fearing; they embody that feeling of both stagnation and vibration. What message or theme did you want to convey within “Silence?" What did you want to get across to listeners? A certain vulnerability, frailty. An incapacity to reach out. Did you work alongside producers or musicians when formulating the haunting instrumentals for “Silence?" Who helped bring this song to life? I worked with the record producer, Montreal-based singer-songwriter Antoine Corriveau on arranging the song. We tried a few things, building up our arrangement around the delicate, repetitive piano pattern that's playing through the whole song. Antoine suggested we work with violinist Melanie Bélair. She did the string arrangements and, phew, the first time I heard her work. It blew me away. She also contributed to “Slow Train,” “The Wish,” “Unhomey Home,” "Sleep," and “To the Victim” on the album. And then vocal arranger Rose Normandin joined it and truly brought things to another level yet again. She came up with very chilling, moving, and complex vocal arrangements, with drones and beautiful dissonance. Rose also contributed to "Slow Train," "Thérèse," and "Sleep" on the album. I feel very lucky that Antoine, Mélanie, and Rose worked with me on this song and the whole record. How do Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True contrast your debut album, The Devil in Me? What are the core differences between these two projects? Even if I explore vulnerability and frailty a lot in the lyrics of the song, I feel like, musically, this album is less delicate than my first one. It remains quite introspective, but all the while being a bit more “in your face.” I feel like it is more expansive, and the approach is more direct. The Devil in Me was tiptoeing on sadness. This album feels like an interior, contained explosion.

She reiterates vulnerable words like, "I still don't know who I am," we couldn't find those words more apparent to those navigating life through a perspective lens. "Talking to Myself" has an immediate replay factor as we envision ourselves cruising the freeway and getting lost in a medley of our thoughts. Find yourself through Ajanne's "Talking to Myself" on your favorite streaming platform. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Ajanne! We're thrilled to have you here chatting with us about the new release of your latest single, "Talking to Myself." What emotions were running through your head when creating such a reflective single? The main lyric I built the rest of the song around was the part, “she took me, and then she kept me….” There is both fear and excitement in that line. I wrote this song around when I planned to move to LA, so I was very scared. Some of the fear I was holding onto came out in this song. What message do you hope your audience can take away from this song? I’ve noticed that tarot reading has become so popular, and I find them very interesting to watch. Still, I started to really like to lean on them for how to behave for the following week, but the thing is, we don’t really know what the future holds, and we should embrace the unknown, grab it by the balls and make the unknown happen. This song holds such a prolific essence, and we can hear it playing in the background of so many movies! What would be your ideal movie to have this playing to? Definitely, a coming-of-age type film, a young artist moves to the big city and conquers; that’s the dream. Your sound is so unique yet holds mainstream appeal. What is the Detroit music scene like, and have you found it to shape your sound as an artist? Detroit is so underground and rich with diversity, and I feel like that’s exactly who I am; I feel like my sound is a little of everything because that’s how I listen to music overall. What's next for you? I wanted to set the tone for this year, so I plan to continue releasing more music throughout 2023. This will be my year! Instagram Twitter
- Autonomica Instills A Heavy-Hitting Energy With Their Latest EP, 'Mr. Friendly'
Formed in the heart of Los Angeles in 2021, the alternative/hard rock band Autonomica is comprised of Maria Schneider (vocals), Filip Ilic (guitar), and Garrett Althen (drums). As a band, Autonomica strives to include both the familiar roots of punk music with a new modern twist, thus combining the familiar with the unique to make one incredible sound. This stands especially true in their latest three-track EP, 'Mr. Friendly,' – a brilliant blend of turbulent musicality and dynamic vocals that set the tone for abstract themes. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tad Doyle at Witch Ape Studio in Seattle, Washington, Autonomica kicks the project off with the title track and introductory single, "Mr. Friendly." Sizzling guitar riffs pan through the speakers as the intense atmosphere immerses you in its presence. Accompanied by colossal percussion patterns and haunting timbres that fuel the energetic opener, you're submerged in a headbanging frenzy that has you feeling more than just the instrumentation. But, ushered into dissecting the crafty lyrical motifs conveyed, it seems that "Mr. Friendly" isn't so friendly after all. Next up on the EP, we take the heavy-hitting pulse down as we ease into the rhythmic essence of "Something I Wanted" – a song based on someone else's idea of you. Combining the graceful relief of Filip Ilic's mid-tempo guitar riffs rumbling through your speakers, there are moments in this track that intentionally up the ante as the drum patterns scurry with anticipation to match Maria Schneider's chilling croons as she cries out lyrics like, "That's something that I'll never let you know." Finally, carefully pulling us towards the final piece of 'Mr. Friendly,' we're awestruck by the dynamism presented thus far. "Vices" is the third and last track from this body of work; let us tell you, it does not disappoint. It embodies theatrical chaos, yet it's conceived with utter beauty in mind. The instrumentation's disorderly array amalgamates uniquely to profess the passion of Autonomica in its purest moments. Thankfully for Garrett Althen's tightly knit snare hits that drive home this record, an amplified groove is instilled in "Vices" as it leaves the entirety of 'Mr. Friendly' on our mind in a profound manner. Everything on 'Mr. Friendly' is executed through a boisterous framework and passionate performance. As we take in Maria Schneider's exceptionally written verses, each song's integral structure courtesy of Filip Ilic, and Garrett Althen's impactful energy through bold percussion, we see just how loud and remarkable Autonomica's work on 'Mr. Friendly' is. Listen to the whole EP on all streaming platforms. Instagram Facebook
- LIBERATI Proves Love Will Always Win In "heartbeat of inspiration"
On any given Tuesday, you can find cinematic pop artist LIBERATI cruising Pacific Coast Highway, top-down in a Jeep truck, blasting Tears for Fears during golden hour on the way to his favorite winery. He calls this the "heartbeat of inspiration." The former collegiate All-American quarterback, an Ohio native turned Malibu local, marries his Midwestern charm with the dreamy summertime magic of the West Coast to create a synth-driven sound that pays homage to his heroes of the '80s with the modern story-telling of bands like The 1975, LANY, and Joan. Teaming up with fellow The Songhouse alum Rebecca Brunner, the two make a sonic endeavor out of professing their emotions with the release of the passion-fueled ballad "Find Out." The wistful synth-backed jungle takes our attention to the elusive atmosphere etched into the instrumentation, all while the tightly knit percussion roars with intention. LIBERATI's velvety timbres simmer through the speakers as his words tell a tale of exploring the space between new love and an old heartbreak. Soon joining him with her powerful croons, Rebecca Brunner adds a wanted dynamism to the record to drive the song's concept home much further. Listening to each melody as the two blend their harmonious bliss to convey the ultimate lulling pop hit, the lyrical motifs burst from their context and come to life. From hopelessness to faith, from despair to excitement, LIBERATI and Rebecca Brunner do an impeccable job at emanating an earnest environment for listeners to feel their inner sentiments truly. Saying what we're all thinking, "Find Out" is a brilliant representation of the end of love before a new chapter whisks us off our feet and has us falling into its embrace once more. Listen to the two divulge a heartfelt masterpiece as you take in "Find Out" on your favorite streaming platform. Welcome back to BuzzMusic, LIBERATI! Congratulations on this charismatic release and collaboration with Rebecca Brunner. What was it like bringing this vulnerable concept to life with her? It’s been a fast and wild ride! I met Rebecca through The Song House in Nashville and had a write-on the books with her in early November 2022. I figured we would write something new for either my solo project or hers, but when we talked about what we should write about, I pitched the idea of doing a duet. That’s when the idea to show her “Find Out” came to mind. We vibed on it instantly and wrote it in 45mins. I had to fly back to L.A. the next day, so I had no idea when we would actually record the song. For the next week, I couldn’t get it out of my head and made it a goal to make it my next single. I started working and obsessing over the production to get something for Rebecca to sing to ASAP. Rebecca had the craziest schedule at that time with gigs and filmings and managed to track her vocals in Nashville in the one spare hour she had at that time. As soon as I got that vocal takes, I worked tirelessly to prepare the song for a post-Christmas release, and here we are! I still can’t believe she cut those vocals in an hour. What moment or story inspired the creation of the vulnerable and authentic "Find Out?" I was on the road touring with Jimmie Allen, playing in his support act Neon Union early last year. Over the course of that tour, I took a liking to a lot of Jimmie’s songs, particularly the ballads. Inspired by his style, I put together the chord progression and chorus line of “Find Out” and played it during a soundcheck. The Neon Union boys instantly turned their heads and said, “whoa, what was that?” I knew at that moment that the initial idea was as special as I had hoped. Knowing that I shelved it for almost a year because I didn’t feel emotionally ready to write the rest and give it the shot it deserved. You've mentioned that you've been sitting on this concept for over a year. What shifted your perspective and emotions to release this gem to the world finally? Do you recall a pivotal moment? The pivotal moment was hearing and seeing Rebecca’s reaction when I first showed her the chorus idea. I could tell she instantly felt the emotion and storyline as if she had been there. When she tossed out a few lines after that, I felt safe that this idea had found the right home. Rebecca’s voice had the perfect balance of sultry and tender to convey her character's emotional state in the song. What's your mission statement as an artist, and how do you feel "Find Out" speaks into that? I’ve always felt my mission statement was to facilitate connection using my musical gifts. I seek to tell authentic stories of the human experience using music in an attempt to create soundtracks to core moments in people’s lives. There have been so many times in my own life that music has guided me, helped me make sense of certain situations, and was the friend I needed in tough times. I want to provide that for others. “Find Out” follows two people navigating their rock bottom moments, trying to make sense of their respective heartaches to find the love they’ve been looking for just when they stopped looking for it. I can certainly attest to this experience myself. I love the plot twist of the down-and-out-turned-triumphant. What's next for you? I plan to continue releasing singles installments of my new album every 4-6 weeks throughout 2023. I can’t wait for everyone to hear these new songs! Instagram Facebook
- Why Does Music Sound Better When You're High?
Let us paint a picture for you: It's Friday night, and you get home from work ready to listen to your favorite artist's new album. Of course, you deserve a little pampering and self-care, so you set the tone by rolling up a spliff and pressing play on your favorite streaming platform – an experience so simplistic yet incredibly euphoric. There's no doubt that music and marijuana go together like peanut butter and jelly, a famous combination that we almost don't think too deeply about it. Cannabis has had an extensive and close relationship with music for quite some time now – whether it be for the people composing the melodies or the consumers tuning in. But why could music's sweet sound be much more enjoyable when high? Well, let's explore some of the possible reasons. Well, for starters, if you've ever thought that time seemed to move slower when under the influence of marijuana, you were right. Oddly enough, a study was conducted at Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom where Dr. Jörg Fachner, a professor of music, health, and the brain, exhibited that a 15-second time interval increases to an average of 16.7 seconds while high on the effects of marijuana. Considering the basis of sound vibrating bodies, and music is all time-based, the auditory system that processes music has to be extremely good at deciphering time. So, your theory is backed by research. This could possibly explain why you're able to notice intricate details in the production you may not notice when sober. It's as if you have more time to pay attention to each element contributing to your favorite tracks. Hold tight; this isn't the only way marijuana finds a way to affect our minds. In Dr. Fachner's study with an EEG, an electroencephalogram machine that tracks electrical brain activity, there are modifications in the occipital area, which processes the visual component, the temporal area, which processes the auditory and then in the parietal. These three connections seem to benefit the music consumer throughout their listening experience. When we look at the fact that cannabis actively alters our perception and heightens our experience in all aspects, the altered state of our mind allows us to hear the music more intensely, providing a more pleasurable listening experience. Tying into this, music is a natural dopamine booster. It enhances the nervous system's reward center, much like what happens when puffing on your favorite strain. If you're unfamiliar with dopamine, it leads to emotion and gratification in humans. Pair music and weed together, and we can thank the mesmerizing characters of our brains for supporting this theory. So, what's really happening to the stoner's brain when listening to music? Dr. Jörg Fachner has said, "Marijuana works like a psycho-acoustic enhancer. That means you can absorb, focus on something and have a bit of a broader spectrum. It doesn't change the music; it doesn't change the ear's functioning. Obviously, it changes the way we perceive ear space in music." We still have an abundance of knowledge to take in when understanding why and how marijuana affects how we perceive music and sounds in general. From clouds of familiar smoke rising through the crowd at concerts or the simplistic pleasure of lighting one up at home and putting your headphones on, maybe we're the best judge as to why it sounds so much better to us.

Allowing our imagination to walk away from this project with what we needed most, the three songs hold a timeless sound as they live up to their therapeutic essence. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Carl Adams! We loved being able to take in your latest EP. Creating solely from an instrumental perspective, we find that the takeaway from listeners is endless - which is a thing of beauty! So, in your own words, could you please share the meaning behind "Disentranced?" To disentrance means to awaken from a deep sleep. That's largely what this represents. It's the year's first offering after nearly an entire year off. The last song came out in September, but this entire 2023 was musically completed by February. So I've just quietly been waiting since then to start rolling out everything new. Was there a particular moment or story that inspired this concept? When naming anything, I usually lean toward abstract lines of thought, so this title showed up pretty early. Definitely helped shape how everything came together. Which musical influences do you look to for inspiration? How do you find they've helped you achieve the sound you have today? There are way too many to name—plenty of metal musicians and hip-hop producers, and artists for me to steal from. And I usually steal very tiny things. Even then, the challenge is to find an identity all your own, but I think I've done that. We would love for you to share more insight into the creative process. For example, are there any memorable moments that made the creation of "Disentranced" that much better in your eyes? Most of those songs were done in one sitting. And in writing them, there wasn't really a struggle. They came together pretty quickly, and that's always what you want. What's next for you? This EP will hang in the air for a bit. There'll be other things to accompany it over the next few weeks. Instagram

Welcome to BuzzMusic, Chris Micheal! We're thrilled to have you here chatting with us about the release of "Highway Sound." We love the dimension you bring into a song of this nature. What is the inspiration behind the encouraging and heartfelt words you share? Inspiration is a great question; this stems back to where I grew up, which was like a fly on the wall of the big city. I grew up in a train town surrounded by all sorts of farming and mixed industries on the outskirts. I lived there till I was around 20, with a small portion living in Bc for six months, inspiring a larger view of life. It was a tough place to grow up because it seemed like there were more bars than coffee shops, and I mean literally 6 bars in a two-block radius and not a coffee shop on site. Of course, naturally, I had made many friends, and as I grew older, all my family had moved onto new lives, sprung out of there, and found new homes elsewhere. Honest to goodness, I was the last man standing in T-Town, and the lifestyle started to set in; really was no way to grow a career and try to make a life. The best option was either forging train wheels or some form of job in community relations. Not trying to age me, but that was over 20 years ago. Does your experience with the 90s grunge help you with any element of the country sound you embody today? I actually never really shared this much with my writing partner Stephen Arundell my motive to the tune. Back then, I lost the love of my life, and shortly after, I skipped town, but this song serves as a testament to how I would have liked it to go and gave me some internal closure. Could you please share a glimpse into the creative process of bringing "Highway Sound" to life? I wanted the song to have the feel-good driving down the highway vibe, be inspiring, and share the connection with fellow listeners. How does a song like "Highway Sound" express your mission statement as an artist? I definitely believe my past musical experiences add elements to my music; I am a country rock. After all, I try to maintain a lot of traditional Nashville elements as far as instruments and methods of recording. Those are core, but I carry no barrier to being creative and free and just being myself in the music. Highway Sound started as a writing session between myself and Stephen Arundell me, who also produced the song; we recorded drums, bass, and guitar altogether in Nashville format. Then added all the extra elements. It was about three months by the time we mastered the song. One of my favorite parts of working on this song was Stephen's approach and willingness to help achieve my vision as an Artist. What's next for you? What's next for us is we are currently working towards a seven-song Album I would like to release come spring and perform at many of my favorite festivals. Just want to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to listen to our music and come out to shows this past year. We are thrilled about what's next! Instagram Facebook

Thanks for joining us to chat about the release of "Shawty We Can." You create an energetic yet intimate vibe on this track, and we love it! What was the moment or story that inspired the creation of this song? The moment was putting a couple of stories together that I have been through in my life and just letting the wordplay explain it all. Sometimes things click for me, and it gets the creative flow going. It really all depends on what I want to show the fans and what side they get from me. With such witty lyrical concepts, what inspires your extensive use of wordplay? I think of different ways to get people to see how differently I can think outside the box. I do a couple of things to see if people catch on to what I’m trying to say; sometimes, it goes over their heads. Kind of a cat-and-mouse game to see who can figure out what before the next person, in this case, the next song. Could you please share a glimpse into the creative process of bringing "Shawty We Can" to life? Do you often use the same creative process? The creative process really changes with each song. Sometimes I listen to certain artists, and things start to click; other times, I put myself in positions to get those creative juices flowing and help me find what is going to happen next and what version of ProphiSee I can showcase this time. How do you find that your musical influences speak into your music? Have you always had this sound, or have you adopted and tweaked it along the way? I have adopted and tweaked it along the way; I can hear myself in so many people it’s crazy. And sometimes, when I rhyme, the wordplay is almost similar to what someone else would say, and I try to just put everything in my own words and stories. Creating your sound takes adjustment and giving it time for people to understand. What's next for you? The sky is the limit. Right now, I’m in a race to do anything that gets placed in front of me. Being at the top of the game is hard, and when you get there, you have to find ways to stay relevant in music and in life. So I’m trying to teach myself how to keep going and pushing myself past just being good and great to become a legend one day and engrave my name in people's minds because sooner or later, the walk of fame won’t be here, so how will you want to be remembered. - Say Farewell To Crow Speaks With The Edgy “Topical Clickbait Song Title”
Arizona-based alternative catharsis rock project Crow Speaks began in 2016 as the brainchild of Edgar Sopper. Although musical writing commenced in 2013 in the Pacific Northwest, after relocating to Arizona in 2016, Crow Speaks released his first single recorded at El Ramirez Studios in Mesa, AZ. Performing as a solo act until the pandemic forced Sopper inside and into his first digital recording attempts, the experimentation took Crow Speaks to new-found levels. In late 2022 Edgar Sopper announced the closing of Crow Speaks with a self-recorded and mixed single entitled "Smile Through," as well as the final track to come soon after, which has brought our focus to "Topical Clickbait Song Title." The final offering is extended as Crow Speaks comes to an end. Sopper has stated that out of respect for cultures that hold the crow sacred, and another artist with an album of soothing flute music titled 'Crow Speaks,' these reasons have collided with his desire to leave heavy-emotional content behind and come back with a more hopeful sound, message, and name. Leaving listeners with an amplified sound that touches on a fresh-faced territory for Sopper, this record clocks in at 3:55 with pure grit heard throughout the instrumentation. Wrapping us in the sonic exploitation of electronic elements, there's much to dissect when listening to the entirety of "Topical Clickbait Song." From the boisterous energy that catapults from the speakers, there are glimmers of raw and authentic creativity streamlining this song. From sizzling synths that make you feel the essence of existence, hypnotic pads luring you into an underworld of abstract intimacy, and percussion that roars with no rhyme or reason, everything seamlessly fits together as the eclectic flair instilled constructs a bolstered foundation for Sopper's haunting vocals. Touring us through hefty unkempt emotion as Sopper's croons visit shrill and mellow peaks, this glitchy, cyber-punk extravaganza is Crow Speaks' way of going out guns-blazing and unlocking the maximum potential for future endeavors to unfold. Tune into the diverse frequency Sopper lives by and feast on the last offering Crow Speaks divulges to us. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Crow Speaks, and congratulations on the final piece to Crow Speaks' puzzle. How does it feel to conclude such a monumental era for yourself? It really feels like a breath of fresh air and like a huge weight has been lifted. I am so proud of myself for having the courage, determination, and perseverance to act on a long-time bucket list item of making my original music. Not what's on the radio but my personal preferences of sounds, textures, rhythms, and moods. I have put everything I could into my music and can walk away satisfied with no remorse knowing I gave it everything. Crow Speaks was a necessary part of my healing process in coping with childhood trauma, diagnosed with major bipolar depression and addiction. Crow Speaks isn't the happiest of stories to hear, so I hope that simply living out my best life quietly, with contentment is enough of an ending for anyone who took an interest in Crow Speaks to be satisfied knowing no more music means I'm not as emotionally turbulent or struggling. Ideally, the day comes when music for me is a natural, healthy, symbiotic part of my life, and without forcing anything - maybe I can manifest the polar opposite of what Crow Speaks encapsulated. Instead of suffering, despair, pain, confusion, etc. - reside and resound in joy, renewed hope, celebration, excitement, love, and assurance. Not putting that imposed pressure on myself, though, to have to create anymore unless it happens organically. With this track's abstract and oozingly charismatic representation making listeners feel myriad emotions, what message do you hope to send out with "Topical Clickbait Song Title?" "Topical Clickbait Song Title" was an instrumental I've been working on since around 2017 or 2018, so shortly after early counseling attempts and a year before beginning to get sober in 2019. I always heard this as a sci-fi/cyberpunk sound with the imagery happening internally. I'm one of those instrumentals before lyrics/melody people. I just started singing before I knew the words - just sounds that gravitated towards words and eventually sounded and felt right delivering. I'm sure it was influenced by my father, David, who displayed symptoms of Alzheimer's for years before getting a formal diagnosis in 2019. The line "Stuck here with this hardware that is failing" was changed from 'software' to 'hardware' to bridge the gap between my father's (and many folks' cognitive conditions) to a topic all of us can relate to, which is our amazing, incredible, self-healing bodies that do require us to make the most of the time we have. Make smart, healthy decisions for ourselves. Live, love, laugh, and experience as much as possible today because no one knows what tomorrow brings. My father's condition helped influence the lyrics; my cries for help and self-pity informed me, as well as a desire to try to explain or justify my perceived suffering and recognize suffering outside myself. "Trying to keep the dying, who are living, all from dying while you're living in a country homicidal built on stolen land with stolen life." is a direct reference to anyone trying to support someone with any number of conditions to survive day-to-day, as well as the lives who were involuntarily taken from their homelands to be slaves or be neglected on unwanted land for the sake of the United States. The overall message I want to impart with "Topical Clickbait Song Title" is to keep speaking your truth and never stop speaking out about wrongs that need addressing. Many individuals seek to silence opposing speech for whatever reason they believe justifies it. We need free speech. We don't need free speech where one party or speaker does not come to the table able or willing to listen, consider the other viewpoint, and change if need be. It must always be a two-way street. Logic and the best interest of the community must take priority over the self-interested, unhealthy demands of a minority. Please take us into the creative process of bringing this track to life. Knowing this is Crow Speaks final release, did you approach it differently than you normally would have? I remember wanting to utilize the 'Punk' drum machine setting on the Zoom G1oN pedal to make something fast, aggressive, and explosive. The bass line came first, just what popped into my head with that fast drum machine beat and tempo. The first guitar came next, followed by the second guitar. I ended up changing the end of the first guitar parts to harmonize with the second guitar at the end of the phrase and thought it sounded Iron Maiden-y 80's ish kind of, which makes me feel both badass and silly at the same time lol. For the pre-chorus instrumental, I wanted to be no-nonsense and more abrasive. Then the chromatic bar chord walk-up for the chorus was just an attempt to create a feeling of unsteadiness or not having solid ground beneath one's feet. Always have to be on your toes and take nothing for granted. I was given a gift certificate to Zia Records for the holiday, which enabled me to get the missing glitchy, sub-bassy synth element I needed for this song. The Earthquaker Bit Commander really prompted the recording of this song. I ran a keyboard's bassoon effect through the pedal to fatten the signal and make it sound a little warmer. Really stoked about how it sounds. I went into recording this without having a chorus or pre-chorus, so after recording the instrumentals and trying out different mixes, the lyrics finally came to me at 3 am, and of course, unable to sleep. And that was how the song finally came to be after 4 or 5 years. There's a preoccupation with having artists consistently put out work. Some artists can handle that, but I admittedly cannot. Time to live, experience, process, grow, renew energy, and allow space for things to come together organically has been a theme for me. I did approach this track differently, not only because it's the final Crow Speaks track, and I wanted it to be the best quality I've produced, but also because it's my best/most dynamic song, in my opinion. I really wanted to honor the song and what I tried to make it stand for. Because of those two things, I also pushed myself to research more about utilizing compression appropriately and what it actually does, and saw great results. If you could collaborate with any artist or band, dead or alive, who would you choose and why? Oh damn, that's so difficult to choose just one! If I HAVE...to pick just one... I would love to scream my lungs out with Anthony Green from High and Driving, Zolof the Rock n Roll Destroyer, Audience of One, Jeer at Rome, Saosin, Circa Survive, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Fuckin Whatever, And There With Them Was Love, and LS Dunes. Anthony Green has a one-of-a-kind voice and seems to have so much damn creativity that he inevitably ends up prompting new music as a by-product of existing. He brings something very unique to all of his projects. I respect his vocal prowess, observable growth as a singer, stage presence and energy, consistent solo output, and willingness to share his experiences with mental health, addiction, and life. What can we expect to hear from your sound and music next? Don't expect anything, lol. Music has been both a blessing and a curse for me. I can really make myself miserable with self-imposed pressure and expectation for myself. I hope to live these days happily, and, at least with Crow Speaks, it means I'm dealing with heaviness and pain. In my head, ideally, in some years, I write, record, and put out an album of ambient, possibly psychedelic, upbeat, fun, joyous sounds and songs under a new name that can tell you about my life on the other side with love, acceptance, healthiness, contentment, purpose, and hope. I don't put anything past life, though. A buddy suggested the Crow Speaks sound might be so close to my soul that I could not escape it. Who knows? You'll either get more Crow Speaks under a different name or, hopefully, this new, fresh, hopeful sound and nuanced musical content. You would love to embrace more collaboration and are open to new projects to explore new areas! Thank you so much for letting me share my story with all of you. Instagram
