- Matt Kiano Is “Going for a Walk,” And Leaving The Past Behind
wHailing from South Wales, a new solo recording artist but a veteran musician and singer-songwriter Matt Kiano continue navigating through the music scene with his angst-ridden and powerful sophomore single, "Going for a Walk." Matt Kiano first took the music scene with his debut solo single, "Life is Fair," which captured listeners with his innate vocal and performance similarities to Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. Kiano has spent ample time in various punk rock bands, and he's still a part of the Guilty Rascals, but a solo music career outside of that mold was necessary to broaden his horizons. Coming on the heels of his debut single, "Life is Fair," Matt Kiano just released an even more personal and cathartic tune with "Going for a Walk." This song tackles similar themes as the debut single but shows us different angles of life's peaks and valleys while attempting to dig your way out of confusion. Diving into the new single, "Going for a Walk," the song opens with a killer and thick bass line that reeks of grungey alternative. As the dense and mid-tempo drums from Ty Walker begin tapping through our speakers, Matt Kiano begins to emotionally elaborate on feeling like he's out of time and how there's a target on the back of his head. This song slowly escalates in power and might, blasting us with a vibrant and rich punk-rock hook to wash listeners with an anthemic and chant-worthy experience. We appreciate how Matt Kiano goes back and forth from such bright hooks into ominous and haunting verses where the deep bass lick stands out like a sore thumb. He takes us around the hook one last time to fuel us with sensations of release while moving onward and upward. Feel the magnetic pull of Matt Kiano's powerful and piercing sophomore single, "Going for a Walk," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Matt Kiano. You've honestly bulldozed us with your emotional and powerful new single, "Going for a Walk." What inspired this anthemic and personal piece? Thank you. I think I’m gonna hit you guys up whenever I’m having a bad day. I never really know what I’m writing about until the song is near completion if I’m honest. It’s only when I look back at the near-completed piece that I kind of realize what I’m saying. It’s like, a subconscious thing I suppose. I’ve been listening to a lot of Violent Femmes and Oliver Tree lately and I’m always fascinated by songs that don’t really follow a structure and I like to think that I’m smart enough to do similar. I take a lot of inspiration from whatever I’m listening to at that time and place. How does "Going for a Walk" continue the story within your debut single, "Life is Fair?" How do these two songs relate to each other? I know it sounds crazy. That they relate in any way shape or form but to me, they’re both about life – just different aspects. ‘Life is Fair’ is a reflective song, somebody looking back on their life and remembering that one person who pushed them off their bike when they were younger. ‘Going For A Walk’ is about creating and giving birth to whoever or whatever Matt Kiano is. It starts from the perspective of somebody who isn’t Matt Kiano and ends from the perspective of Matt Kiano. Did you work alongside any producers or musicians when creating the instrumentals for "Going for a Walk?" What sort of vibe and atmosphere did you want to give the song? It was recorded in the same place I record all my songs, Unit 13 in Tredegar. It’s a great little spot and the boys down there, Sam and Aled really know what they’re doing. But in terms of the instrumentals, I like to write everything before going to the studio. I like spending as little time as possible in the studio, I like to be as efficient as possible. Just in and out. So I created a rough demo, then I sent it to my drummer boy, Ty Walker who once again did not fail to impress me. Then once I had everything down, I essentially head into Unit 13 and recreate my rough demo. For the vibe and atmosphere, I knew I wanted to steer away from the bounciness and lightness of, ‘Life is Fair.’ I wanted something a little moodier but not depressing. I ain’t got time to listen to music to feel sad. You really do sound like Billie Joe Armstong. Do you feel this gives you an advantage? Or is it challenging to set yourself apart from him and Green Day? At this point, I think it’s only a matter of time before Billie Joe Armstrong has to cancel a tour because he’s sick and I get a call. I’ve heard it my whole (semi) professional music career, at least one person at a gig will tell me. It’s fine though, he’s a great singer and a massive talent. I think it’s because Green Day was the first band I was obsessed with. Like, I’d fall asleep nearly every night watching ‘Bullet in a Bible.' I love them. I learned how to sing and play guitar whilst listening to their songs. It’s not so bad in my solo music because the music is different from Green Day but in my band, ‘Guilty Rascals’ we’re a bit more punk rock and it’s very easy to just go, “oh this must be a B side Green Day song”. But if anybody knows Mike Dirnt or Tre Cool’s phone number and Billie Joe starts playing up – hit me up. What's next for you? Next up for me is trying to get this song out there as much as I can before falling into hibernation for a few months and then doing it all again. Instagram Facebook

Welcome to BuzzMusic, Prophetic Poet, and congratulations on your latest release "Don't Tweak." What was your main inspiration for it and how did it come about? The main inspiration for the song “Don’t Tweak” was really the notion of not allowing anyone to play with you cause in life we always come across someone who believes that they can either talk to us in any kind of way or treat us any type of way it’s like an immediate defensive shield anytime someone tries to tweak you tell them hey “Don’t Tweak” With your crazy amount of wordplay in "Don't Tweak" what were your most challenging when creating this record? The most challenging thing about creating the record was the direction of where the song would be taken in the beginning I didn’t know exactly how I was going to come on the song, the flow, the energy, or anything like that it was different from songs I made originally. But I didn’t back out of the challenge of creating something different. As a rapper entering the male-dominated industry what can you tell us about what you've learned over time and how it has changed your perspective on certain things? With entering the industry I can tell you that I have learned a whole new meaning of consistency to be the best at whatever it is that you want to do in life you have to be consistent it’s the key component for everything to work it changed my perspective where I can say that I really understand what a lot of my favorite artist goes through when it comes to being in this industry you gotta keep at it and master your craft if you want to be the best. "Don't Tweak" brings across a very upbeat and fast-paced moment that we cannot get enough of. Have you ever thought about branching out and trying other genres? If yes, which genre and why? I’ve always thought about branching out into different genres my goal as an artist is to be as versatile as I can possibly be with my music I wouldn’t want to be marginalized in one genre of music a lot of music in my catalog ranges from different genres I feel that it really helps the longevity of an artist being able to create different styles of music because music is universal it’s not just one sound. What's next for you? What’s next for me is continuing to brand myself getting the name of “Prophetic Poet” everywhere into the masses to establish my own core fanbase that’ll grow with me on this journey I’m in with making my staple as a musician being able to really touch people with my music and have it travel the test of time. Ask questions and find your answers in Amanda Sum's cerebral and stunning new single, "New Age Attitudes," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Amanda Sum. We love the soothing yet thoughtful vibe in your recent single, "New Age Attitudes." What was the main concept or lyrical theme you wanted to push in this piece? Hi BuzzMusic! Thank you for listening and for having me! This is definitely one of my more broad-themed songs! But if I were to generalize it, this song is trying to pinpoint what it is to live in this day and age; where all your choices and decisions seemingly come with such high stakes, where it feels like whatever move you make, someone warned you against it, and where you’re searching for little simple pleasures to ground yourself when moving through an impending existential crisis. Haha! What inspired you to write the lyrics for "New Age Attitudes?" Did any moments or experiences leave you in need of a creative outlet? I think a lot was going on for me at the time I wrote this song. It was late November 2019, and I was finishing the last course of my undergrad, I was working on the biggest theatre contract I had ever been a part of, I was just beginning to question why I was steering towards making music when I would soon receive my degree in theatre creation, and I had just had my heart thrown around. I like to write in questions, and I had a lot of questions then. What was it like creating the blissful sonics and instrumentals for "New Age Attitudes?" Who helped bring that jazzy and poised sound to life? This song was hands down my favorite song to write arrangements for!! The keys part that I’m playing is already quite jazzy, so I wanted the rest of the parts to help bring that out. Jamie Lee, who is playing drums on the track, was instrumental in helping to find that groove. Then I wrote some trumpet parts, played by Viola Sabean, synth bass, and pad parts, played by Mary Ancheta, and I had fun making a backup vocal arrangement, especially for the outro. I think the end serves as a huge question mark to the never-ending query that this song presents, so I wanted the outro to reflect that by having everything calling and responding to each other; a bit of a sound circus before its uncertain resolve chord at the end. Emily Millard is my producer, so I would run all my arrangement drafts by her, and she helped shape everything and kept the show running in the studio. How does the single "New Age Attitudes" help prepare listeners for what's to come on your debut album this fall? New Age Attitudes is the lead single and title track off the album because it is the big umbrella that the rest of the record huddles underneath! Both in theme and sonically. This single will prep you for more jazzy warmth, more odd time signatures, more questions, and maybe even some statements too. What's next for you? Album-related, I’ve got some exciting music videos on their way out! It has been pretty dreamy. The album is made by an all-female team and played by an all-Asian female band. I think that rocks! And I hope to see more teams like this emerge, but it takes care, thought, time and effort, and I hope people understand that the work is worth it. Non-album-related, I’m working on some theatre projects, dancing in my living room, and watching flower arrangement videos. Instagram Facebook
- Mike Habhab Reflects On When He First Met His Wife On, "I Ain't Giving Up"
Troy, Michigan, is home to the melodic talents of Mike Habhab. Back with yet another thoughtful tune for his audience, "When I First Met You" is the follow-up to the singer-songwriter's very well-received record, "I Ain't Giving Up." Written by Mike Habhab, performed by Zach Radcliff, and produced by Super Producer/ Engineer Chuck Alkazian at Pearl Sound Studios, "When I First Met You" will tug on your heartstrings as you embrace the warm emotions that flow your way. As the opulent essence of warm guitar riffs and passionate keys are performed, this striking rendition takes us to the brilliant timbres singing sounds of sweet love. You hear the emotion packed into the lyrical motifs and then professed by the velvety croons. When writing this piece, Mike Habhab spoke purely from the heart, as the song's concept is based on his take on love with his wife 15 years ago. Taking the dreamy melodies and allowing others to relate to his moment of love at first sight, those who worked on the record are eager to see people sharing their feelings and experience as they apply them to their thoughts and sentiments. So it's only natural for this song to feel personal and relatable to our lives as it sends us into the depths of our loving capacities. What we take away from it is a feeling more significant than another great track, but we feel our hearts open up that much more and bask in what nostalgia does to the soul. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Mike Habhab. The entirety of "When I First Met You" has us absorbing emotions in such a pure way. What does it feel like to you to have your love story affecting the hearts of listeners out there? Thank you. I was hoping for that kind of reaction when people listened to this song. It feels great to share my story of how I unexpectedly had the good fortune to meet my wife Dana 15 years ago. I am confident that others had a similar experience with their loved ones as well. Was there a particular moment or story that inspired you to revisit your and your wife's first date? Does the music you write tend to come from a personal place? The particular moment was when I first saw her and thought that I had to have her. We were on a double-blind date with her friend and my best friend. Throughout the evening, we kept giving each other googly eyes, laughing, talking, and just enjoying each other's company. At the end of the evening, I just knew she was the one. I would definitely say that all my songs come from a personal space and the experiences that I have encountered or felt throughout my life. Meeting my wife is one of those experiences. Could you please share a glimpse into what it was like in the studio when bringing this song to life? How did everyone help contribute to your vision? I knew that going into the studio that day and recording was going to be overwhelming for me; it was about my wife and the love I have for her. During the recording process, I kept getting choked up and emotional, I was thinking of the memories and of her face, and it hit me hard. When I went to the studio, Chuck and Zach talked about how they wanted it done and the instruments we would use. Zach already knew the direction of how I wanted it recorded. The end result was beautiful. We have to know; how does your wife feel about this song? Was she surprised when first hearing it? Hi BuzzMusic, wife here. I thought it best that I answer this one on behalf of Mike. Essentially it boils down to love. I love this song because I felt his emotions on another level. For me, it was like going down memory lane and revisiting that night; it was sweet. Was I surprised when I heard it? Yes and no. Yes, I was surprised how it turned out, and no, because I was there when he was writing it. However, the end result turned out beautiful. He would come to my work during our lunch break, and we would listen to it together during its rough stages before completion. What's next for you? What is next for me is to keep writing and expressing to the world how I feel and hope to inspire others in their journey to find true companionship. Instagram Facebook

- Ryan McMahon Searches For “One More Fire”
Hailing from British Columbia, singer-songwriter and musician Ryan McMahon unleashes his desire for life and togetherness with his new high-energy single, "One More Fire." Growing up loving the feeling of evoking emotion from audiences at an early age led McMahon to carve out a 20-year career in Canada's vibrant indie music scene. His goal to create songs that speak to the human condition has landed the BC-based artist on stages alongside Mother Mother, Nickelback, Buffy Ste. Marie, Lisa Loeb, and more. Fuelling the fire that powers our existence is the core concept and theme within Ryan McMahon's latest single, "One More Fire." The song itself is this thrilling country backroad foot-stomper that leans into folk-rock through the beaming electric guitars and upbeat drum patterns. That said, it's what's deeper that makes us feel included, seen, and ready to hit the next concert in town. Expanding on "One More Fire," the tune kicks off with a toe-tapping upbeat drum arrangement and a plucky acoustic guitar with some added background banjo. As McMahon jumps in with his ferocious and lively vocal performance, he begins setting the scene with picturesque lyrics that forget our times locked inside, ready to seize each day that comes. The song's hook offers all the energy and passion we missed out on these past couple of years. If anyone's in search of a good time, trust us when we say it all starts with Ryan McMahon's new anthemic single. A few transitions, anticipation-filled breakdowns, and guitar solos keep us locked in until the song's very last beat. Keep your head held high with Ryan McMahon's latest feel-good tune, "One More Fire," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Ryan McMahon. We're singing along with you in your latest anthemic single, "One More Fire." What fuelled your fire to write this optimistic hit? I can hear you! "One More Fire" exists due to a conversation with my friend Aaron Pritchett. He and I worked together, along with his son Jordan and future daughter-in-law Danielle. We talked about writing something inspirational and fun to shake off pandemic blues. I had a desire to stay true to myself lyrically as I always have but also wanted to create something up-tempo that could potentially move a large audience, no matter the genre; Country, Americana, Folk, Polka… Did you want your audience to hear "One More Fire" and picture those nights at a memorable concert or event? What did you want to evoke in this listener? Hope, most of all. After rolling through a couple of years of no touring, family health issues, and my wife's near-death experience in a car accident, I knew the lows that I was going through and that many others out there were going through the same or worse. I wanted to have some lines in there that were reassurances that better times could be ahead if we could keep our heads and focus on them. When we created the video, I wanted the message to be simple: a room full of my friends and hard-core fans who've been with me forever, just getting together and celebrating being alive once again. Did you have any other hands-on-deck during the songwriting or instrumental process for "One More Fire"? What did that look like behind the scenes? Recording at the Warehouse in Vancouver is amazing. The live room is almost like its own instrument in itself. Huge and ancient; it gives whatever is being tracked in there its natural reverb that I love. As far as the writing process goes, I did that. But once you gather great studio musicians Scott Smith (guitar, banjo, pedal steel), Jeremy Holmes (bass, mandolin), Pat Steward (drumkit) & Darryl Havers (keys) together - playing all the main tracks live off the floor - that's when things take off. Everyone in that room is so accomplished, and other than asking for a few things here and there, I just let 'em go. It's inspiring as a vocalist to ride the wave that all these folks are creating for you; it all came together so fast, and it just pushed me to sing my lungs out with my whole heart. Once Jordan Pritchett and Danielle Marie King (co-producers) got their mitts on it, the song morphed once again. They're both so talented. The harmonies they came up with weren't anything I had thought of myself, and they're sonically my favorite part of the song. Why did you want to create "One More Fire" to be so anthemic and bold? Do you feel this loud and proud sound captures what we've missed during the pandemic? I feel that the loud and proud sound captures something that I might've been missing even before the pandemic. Sometimes, as a writer, I tended to get lost in subtleties and inside stuff that might not reach all audiences, ya know? It's really important to me, at least at this juncture of my career, to land a couple of cuts that are more shareable with the listeners. Something relatable that we all feel, not just 'my story.' That lesson has taken me a little longer to learn as a songwriter, but better late than never, I hope! What's next for you? Once "One More Fire" comes out, we've got a couple more singles that we recorded at the Warehouse just last week. They'll get released one by one as 2022 unfolds. The goal is to have a collection of songs released on a full album in early 2023. It's a long game and a new method of releasing music for me, but it makes the most sense for us at the moment. I'm focusing on getting a new agent and getting the band on the road for longer stretches as well… I don't know if it's a mid-life crisis thing or what, but playing loud and up-tempo sure feels good to me these days. I'll always have that acoustic show in my pocket - I still love playing solo - but when great musicians are onstage helping you deliver your message to the audience, well, that's just the best feeling in the world to me. - Indulge In Tonne Desai’s, “Feelings”
Independent singer-songwriter Tonne Desai lives in Nashville, also known as NashVEGAS. Studying music in school at Fisk University, it was in college that he was accepted into the now Grammy award-winning Fisk Jubilee Singers, where he toured and performed with the group for three years. Throwing himself into songwriting, he focused on what he wanted to write and what he wanted to tell the world. Writing in many genres, pop music speaks to Tonne Desai. With a passion for becoming an artist that anyone can relate to and connect with, Tonne Desai wants to share stories through his gift of music. The electro-pop scope of his latest single, "Feelings," tugs at our heartstrings and leaves us feeling abundant with thoughts and emotions conjured up. The wide vocal range of Tonne Desai is conveyed in such a saturated fashion. His heartfelt words glide into the speakers as they cascade upon the instrumentation and become one with the vulnerable concept at hand. With a track title like "Feelings," you can imagine that we're about to embark on a wistful conveyance of finer sentiments. As each word professed by Tonne Desai leads with passion and impact, we are welcomed into this universe that collides with the genres of R&B and Pop. The nostalgic croons are performed with an empowering stature that you couldn't imagine letting up. Through the prevalent hues emanated, we admire the desire that has gone into a track of this caliber. Each note in the instrumentation scoops us up and delivers us to exactly where we need to be. "Feelings" does wonder to our soul, and that's how you know it's a record that hits. Tonne Desai is an up-and-comer that you won't want to sleep on. So, set your alarms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Tonne Desai! Congratulations on the release of your latest single, "Feelings." In your own words, what is this song about? Thank you so much, and yes, "Feelings" are about still loving someone and having all those emotions, nerves, and "feelings" when you see them, but they have moved on with someone else, and you're wondering inside should you tell them or not. What struck up the vulnerable inspiration for its creation? Could you please share a glimpse into the creative process? Honestly, I heard the beat, and I was like, oh my God, I have to write something to this beat right now. I was going through my songbook, and I saw the word Feelings, and at that moment, I got a notification from Instagram, and I opened it, and it was a picture of the very person that I never quite got over, and they were with their new person. From there, it all started pouring out of me. The hook was first, and then I went to the verses, trying to pour out how I felt in a meaningful way. I sang it for a friend, and they were like, "this is the one."A Few months later, I recorded it, and now it's out! How does "Feelings" compare to other songs heard in your music catalog? It's my first Pop Ballad. I've written some in the past, but they didn't feel right or truly authentic. All the music I put out, I want it to be authentic; even if it's a pop record or a dance record, I'm always authentic with the writing. So with "Feelings," it just felt purely authentic and like something not only I needed but others in the world needed. We fight our feelings a lot, I feel, and we push them away, allowing love to get away; this song felt like it was not only a reminder of a love you had, but it also acts as a wake-up call to go tell someone how you feel before it's too late. What main message would you like your audience to take away from this song? Don't just fight your feelings and keep them bottled in. Tell that person, pour into that person. Also, it's ok to remember a love that got away or didn't work out. You may still have those feelings. If that person is still a part of your life, I know how hard it can be, but I hope this song gives those people an outlet to just live in those feelings because they are real. What's next for you? Well, I hope this song is what many are telling me it is, which is that "It's the one." I really wanna get the song out to the world and all of my music, really. Im definitely ready to show the world who tonne is, who I am as an artist. I definitely gotta be putting out more music and reaching out to a new fan base; I hope that connects with me and my music. I am so ready for this journey; it's something I've dreamed of for so so long, and I think this song might be that key to the door of so many dreams. I'm excited to keep going cause I'm not stopping! - Saint Rock Takes Us On Their Electric “Cakewalk”
Saint Rock is an Electronic duo based in London and Paris consisting of Adam Parker and Fabian Faupel. They touch on genres of RnB, pop, urban, future bass, EDM, indie, soul, and many more styles. Aside from producing their own music, they also produce music for record labels, DJs, TV shows, movies, commercials, and other sync opportunities. Saint Rock’s sound and songwriting are influenced by their broad knowledge of the music history of the past decades and classic pop music producers. A female vocalist is introduced to us by Saint Rock on their latest single "Cakewalk," who surrounds the production with a pop-like exhibition and an unforgettable weekend twist, as she floats elegantly over the beat with her poise and heartfelt lyrics. As she sings about a lover, she describes a relationship that went through daily struggles, and how she stood up for what she believed in, regardless of what was going on around her. The lyrics describe the enormity of his love for her and how she would rather explore and discover the unknown with him than spend time on the negative, and the line, "this should be a cakewalk," embodies those sentiments perfectly. "Cakewalk's" concept of 'breaking free into new and better fits perfectly with the song's upbeat and inspiring production, and the choice of vocalists complete the song's aurora as she carries us away with her lively and powerful lyrics. Saint Rock brought the heat with this one, tailoring it all for the perfect weekend experience, they've set out to shine bright this 2022. Welcome to BuzzMusic Saint Rock, and congratulations on your latest release, "Cakewalk." When you sat down to create "Cakewalk," what were your biggest inspirations, and what was the process like? So we wanted to write an upbeat pop dance track in the style of Sigala, Ella Henderson, and Kygo. But we took inspiration with soul and from a different direction, in particular, one of our favorite groups; the Bee Gees. We really liked the guitar arrangement in their early 90's tune "One." So we began with tracking down a chord progression with some guitar layering in a similar style to One. And then adding a light, breezy guitar riff. A pop dance song wouldn't be that style without plenty of modern synths and a fat bassline which, of course, we threw in. We then built the beat, drums, percussions, cymbals, effects, etc. We then filled the background with a bunch of pads and filtered synths to enhance the soundscape. Now for some vocals! We used triplets and o vowels to stay modern in the verses before getting more boulder and simpler in the chorus. Lyrics, in general, include a very positive, bright vibe. How was the name "Cakewalk" chosen for this single? The name "Cakewalk" honestly just came out of the blue. We usually go with unusual titles for the majority of our track names/or something a little different. What is the message you're trying to deliver with "Cakewalk?" The message we are trying to deliver is that when something really clicks and works, it can be so easy. It doesn't have to be a chore. It should be fun and enjoyable. What's next for you? What's next for us? We have a release early next month on escape records and the plan this year was ideally a release every month which we are currently on course to do. - Roz De La Cruz Saves a Relationship That’s Heading “South”
From the Philippines to Toronto, r&b/pop recording artist and singer-songwriter Roz De La Cruz releases the slow jam of the year with his latest passionate single, "South." Since moving from the Philippines, Roz has heavily impacted the vibrant Toronto music scene, having studied music and Humber College while performing his personal tunes all across The 6IX. His breathtaking performance stylings alongside his lush, soulful vocals definitely make Roz De La Cruz an act to keep an eye on. Now releasing his luscious, laid-back ballad, "South," the new song tracks the emotional road of a rocky relationship and doing everything in your power to save it from ending. The song was written by Roz and longtime friend/artist Kala Wita and produced by Roz's skilled production team. "South" was mastered by Grammy and Juno award-winning engineer Riley Bell (Daniel Caesar, Chris Brown, New West). Roz De La Cruz wanted to give "South" a modern twist on the familiar catchy Filipino ballads he grew up on, and he's done exactly that and more. The song takes listeners into this slow, soulful, and ultra-groovy space reminiscent of Frank Ocean. The overall blissful feel is quickly halted when Roz De La Cruz vocalizes those painful emotions in a troubled relationship. However, he does a perfect job of laying it all on the line and navigating where things started to go "South," attempting to make it right once and for all. The soothing r&b production keeps our toes tapping with the warmest tones and melodies, sending us into a harmonious listening experience that's truly impossible to resist. Feed the mind and soul with Roz De La Cruz's honest and groovy new slow jam, "South," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Roz De La Cruz. We were honestly stunned when listening to the chilling and blissful experience within your latest single, "South." What inspired this deeply personal and passionate piece? Thank you so much! I am so proud of this song. This was the first song I worked on with my team back in 2018. I think about how when I was brought up in the Philippines, I listened to a lot of power ballads and pop/r&b songs on the radio and was always watching those music videos on MTV and MuchMusic when I moved to Canada in the early 2000s. So I wanted to write a song that was reminiscent of those early sounds but with more of a modern edge to the production. Lyrically, this song is about those rough spots couples go through and emphasizes that talking things out when things go "south" is really important. I wanted to romanticize those old memories of relationships, the good and bad parts, and hope that the listeners can reflect and relate to those feelings. What sound and vibe did you want the production and instrumentals to offer in "South?" How did you want these aspects to make listeners feel? The team and I wanted the production to feel very modern. It starts out kinda lo-fi and then hits the listener with a full band when the beat comes in. I've been blessed to be surrounded by some great musicians in Toronto whom I regularly play with. It all started out when Sam Goswell, our lead engineer (and a killer drummer, too), sent me a beat sample, and our heads were immediately filled with ideas. We then experimented with synths and tried to get everything to sound real lush. A good friend of mine, Evan Porter, laid down the bass on this track, and he just knocked it out of the park. The bass on this tune is so much fun, and Evan helped bring that to life. Another buddy of mine, Raymond Eswagen, helped develop the guitar on the track too. For the drums, we wanted to create a blend of live and sampled elements, so we created a kick and snare groove and combined that with real live drum patterns played by Sam and our other producer Marcus Sisk. The mixture of real instruments and programmed sounds give off more of a unique, natural sound that still feels raw, authentic, and fresh. I think the listeners will enjoy the easy-going, bouncy nature of the track. We experimented a lot but made sure that we didn't get too carried away with putting in too much. We wanted to make sure that each sound we picked was essential to helping the song. Did you experience any challenges when creating "South?" Whether that's an emotional struggle or a physical hurdle? Every song that we've worked on has been a challenge to a degree. With this song, in particular, it was going to get botched. We tried re-recording the track as a more stripped-down version, changed the key, and we just were never happy with it. Then two years went by, we listened to the whole catalog of songs we had worked on, and listened back to the 1st demo version of "South" and asked ourselves, "What the hell were we thinking? Were we going to throw this one out? Are we dumb?!" We realized it was a great introduction as my first release and that it showcases my vocals. But it goes to show. Sometimes a song takes a day or two to make or two years. So follow your gut, trust your instincts, and you'll know what to do next. What was your songwriting process like for "South," alongside Kala Wita? Did this collaboration make it easier to find the words you were looking for? Kala (from the group New West) and I have been friends for a while now. We attended college together alongside the rest of my team, Sam Goswell and Marcus Sisk. They've been working hard to help develop the sound of "ROZ DE LA CRUZ ."When Sam sent the first demo for "South," I started writing ideas and lyrics, trying to make a song that encapsulates both the good and bad times in relationships. Then Sam and Kala helped me write the rest of the lyrics. I wanted the song to be catchy, memorable, and not too busy, so people could sing it right after hearing it for the first time. The verses and pre-choruses are simple, with the chorus lifting up the movement with a wavy and floaty melody that gets the point across. It's a pretty heavy topic about the importance of communication when things get rocky in relationships. Still, melodically and sonically, the song feels very light and romantic, which we always want to strive for in songwriting. Happy-Sad, Sad-Happy. What's next for you? After this release, I plan to put out 2 - 3 more songs this year. The songs all show slightly different sides of me. We're planning to release the 2nd single in the summer and the other ones in the fall and end of the year. There's no final date yet, but I plan to do a show in Toronto around November-ish? So keep an eye on that. We want to release enough material this year and keep listeners wanting more. On top of that, we have a self-made label called "Keep It Down! Records". So that will keep me busy developing our artists and creating more content. It's always been a dream of mine to be involved with as many projects as possible. But "Roz De La Cruz" will always be my priority, and I can't wait for you to hear more! Instagram Facebook
