- Mesmerizing Melodies Lurk Within The “Creatures” Of Aaron Andreu’s Shadows
Singer-songwriter Aaron Andreu is crossing over into the English alternative scene, showing that he can bare his soul in any language. Having shared the stage with and written for various Grammy Award-winning artists, he’s embarking on a collection of his own brand of Latin Art-Rock. Closing out 2022 with an enticingly haunting single titled “Creatures,” we grasp the sonic textures Aaron Andreu effortlessly exudes in his genre-defying sound. Seeping through our speakers, his inimitable sound is wistful and ominous as it propels vast amounts of melancholic ambiance into the now broadened spectrum of alternative rock mixed with electronic nuances in which he’s endeavoring. We find ourselves easily escaping towards the multitude of layers that instill a robust feel to the entirety of the single as a brilliant forcefield of exclusivity can be heard in its agonizing foundation. Aaron Andreu’s lulling vocals are soft-spoken yet prevalent as he ushers in lucid croons that cast a cloud of hot-tempered edginess over you through the entrancing dynamism present. His carefully crafted lyrics form powerful motifs that etch into your mind as you’re induced to tag along through every word he utters in a dramatic manner. As we dive deeper into the instrumentation, we hear how the sonic foundation is riddled with ethereal intention. Each percussion pattern rings with conviction as the amplified zest of guitar riffs trickle into oblivion of sentiment felt. Pairing that with the elusive synths and pads that round out the enigmatic ambiance, we have a recipe for a sound that caters to Aaron Andreu. Pulling us further towards his embrace, Aaron Andreu's spellbinding effect over us is truly compelling. We find ourselves longing for more after the song comes to a halt, and his ability to lock us into his moving offerings is unmatched. Listen to “Creatures,” available now on all streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Aaron Andreu, and congratulations on releasing your latest single, “Creatures.” With this crossover into a newly defined genre for you, how does it feel to be created in such a unique format? I’ve always loved to explore new things and absorb those experiences into my collective whole, whether it be music or anything else, so really this vibe is just another facet of my personality I had yet to share. Could you please shine a glimpse into what the creative process entailed when bringing “Creatures” to life? Have you found any changes in the creative process as you embark on this route? “Creatures” was a true collaboration with my talented friend David Galvan. He sent me a rough draft of the song, and I immediately knew I had some things inside me I could put to that. It’s really the first time I’ve created like that. Through the darkened nuance amongst the lyrics and instrumentation, what moment or story inspired the lyrics in this song? The story itself is ultimately a story of kindred spirits. That “darkened nuance,” as you eloquently put it, is another facet of my personality that I’ve only scratched the surface of expressing artistically. How important is vulnerability in the music you create? Is there such a thing as being too vulnerable? Too vulnerable? Never. Real art can only be born through the sincerest vulnerability. Products can be created without being vulnerable. But I don’t make products. Certain genres pride themselves on promoting not being vulnerable, and they’ve bred the most deficient humans, to be honest. To hide our vulnerability, especially in the act of creation, is to deny ourselves of its beauty. You can’t make a baby with your clothes on. What can we expect from you next? Anything and everything. Instagram

Keeping the door open for whatever opportunities come his way, it’s safe to say he’s basking in the excellence heard across 'butterfly love.' Welcome to BuzzMusic, Michael White! We’re excited to have you here to shed some light on your latest release! Love is a bold theme as we all experience it in ways that vary from the next person. What was it like tapping into this head and heart space while creating an album dedicated to it? I think mentally; I was in a better place with this album. My last one was more based on heartbreak, but I finally found myself healing. I am not in a relationship, but this album was inspired by many crushes I had throughout the year. It was just fun. I enjoyed the process so much. How did you get started on your musical journey? What has kept you going along the way? I started in January 2019. Busted out a lot of music to find my sound and get myself out there. I love being creative, and I always get inspired by my peers. Music is just fun, and it’s always evolving each year. So I guess I keep going to keep music alive. Could you please highlight what makes “gimme some more” that extra special track on the project? What picture does it paint as listeners can prepare for the rest of the album? Give me some time is so fun. It’s special to me because it made me fall in love with funk music. It was also the most vocally challenging song to record. This album is about crushes I’ve had that have given me butterflies. Which I feel like a lot of listeners can relate to. Life’s too short. If you like someone and want to explore a relationship with them. Let them know. What is your most profound memory surrounding the theme of love? That’s a good question. I don’t think I have a distinct memory. I’ve loved only one person romantically and stayed for the wrong reasons. The memories quickly transitioned from good to bad. So I’m hoping I can make a memory happen in the future. We know how important the musical inspiration of other artists can be to a creative person on their journey. Who would be your dream collaborator, and why? Oh, that’s a good question. Earth Wind & Fire would be so fun. I’m also digging Michael Medrano. He’s a disco funk pop lgbtq+ artist in Los Angeles. One of the many inspirations came to me with this project and for future project ideas. Instagram Facebook

He dedicates his life to music with the conviction that the arts provide the spiritual richness every human being needs to live better. The most rewarding way he has found to achieve that is through songwriting. Now Gabeo shares his craft with the world. In “Where Sea Meets Sky,” produced by PAPERBOYPLAY, Gabeo pictures the beautiful view of the sea meeting the sky during the night. He expresses the similarity of this feeling with meeting the person you love. The connection between the sea and the sky is similar to what you feel about that person, with or without your body bound. Listening to “Where Sea Meets Sky” starts with ethereal digital notes playing a chilling melody. Then the drums show up with afrobeat vibes, and Gabeo catches your attention with his smooth vocals. The lyrics are sweet and seem like a dream Gabeo is telling you. The blissful and relaxing instrumentals enhance this oniric sensation. “Where Sea Meets Sky” collaborates with Azanti, who lends his skilled vocals to the track with a verse closer to hip-hop than Gabeo's more melodic and paused singing. “Where Sea Meets Sky” is a song you would love to play by the beach, having a good time with your friends or sharing the view with that special one. Lay back, feel the wind, pull them close, and hit the play button on “Where Sea Meets Sky.” Welcome to BuzzMusic Gabeo, and congratulations on your latest release, "Where Sea Meets Sky." can you begin by telling our readers the story behind the lyrics of “Where Sea Meets Sky?” The idea behind Where Sea Meets Sky was to express some of the feelings of being away from someone you love. Even though long-distance, emotional connections are undeniable, I wanted that feeling of longing to come through the lyrics. How did you and Azanti come together to make “Where Sea Meets Sky?” I've been a fan of Azanti for a while and had a relationship with his management (shoutout to Cindy) and some of his producers. I kind of just shot my shot and sent over the song. Luckily he loved it, and we were able to make it happen! It's always extremely rewarding to make great music with like-minded people who are in it for the right reasons. Azanti is a genius and a genuine person. What feelings would you like to transmit through “Where Sea Meets Sky?” I wanted the song to feel emotional and cinematic in a way. There are some sad tones, but I think romance is ultimately the feeling I wanted to transmit. How often do you find inspiration in nature? I find inspiration in nature extremely often. In LA, you're a few minutes from the beach and a few minutes from the mountains. It's easier to escape than people might think. What's next for you? More music in the new year and hopefully more collaborations with amazing people! Instagram Twitter
- The Pretty Wild Takes A Chance On Love In “Bettin on Us”
Sisterly duo The Pretty Wild is a treat for country, alternative, and rock music fans. The singers, songwriters, and musicians recently released one of their most passionate and anthemic songs, "Bettin On Us." The Pretty Wild, formerly Jill & Julia, signed to Records, A Division of Sony Music Ent. in the spring of 2022. Fans and music professionals have coined the band's sound Y'allternative, representing their hybrid of country, alternative, and rock music. Having shared the stage with acts from Halsey to Josh Turner while playing at countless venues across the country, The Pretty Wild is always up to something. Their recent single, "Bettin On Us," showcases the sisterly duo's musical prowess and ability to evoke powerful emotions in the listener while serenading us with passionate lyrics that go all-in on love. Hitting play on "Bettin On Us," we're met with a powerful and captivating country-rock instrumental breakdown leading to Jill's sweet-sounding vocals. While expressing how she isn't afraid to take a chance on this special someone, we reach the alternative-infused hook reminiscent of a modern-day Avril Lavigne. Julia's riveting electric guitar riffs, alongside her vocal appearance in the second verse, offer this well-rounded and dynamic listening experience that's more than refreshing to the ears. The Pretty Wild have clearly mastered their fan-coined genre of Y'allternative; the song's country twangs and alt-rock hook with a dash of punk attitude are equally electrifying and captivating. There's so much to hear in The Pretty Wild's latest hit, "Bettin On Us." Hit play and experience this bold new single for yourself, available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, The Pretty Wild. We love the passion and power you've brought to your latest single, "Bettin On Us." What inspired your duo to create a song about betting on love and someone special? The idea sparked from our own experiences creating and playing music. We decided to keep the chorus lyrics more open and anthemic, so the listener can relate to their struggles, hard work, and triumphs that come with working towards a goal and a dream. Bettin On Us for us was about creating this empowering “Yes I Can!” battle cry. It’s a love letter to ourselves, in a way. What was your duo's creative process like when crafting the 'Y'allternative' instrumentals for "Bettin On Us?" How did you lay the foundation and work your way up? We wanted something rocked, a hype-up song for those moments in life when you need to hear that. It was important to us to have huge drums, something you can clap, stomp or chant along to. Then, the mandolin dances through most of the song to keep things moving along with the grittier guitars. When we wrote it initially, it was mostly on acoustic guitar; oddly enough, we just knew we wanted it to become louder and larger than life for the final record. Did your duo share the songwriting process for "Bettin On Us"? What emotions or feelings did you want your lyrics to evoke in the listener? We write mostly together like 95% of the time. This song was written by the two of us and this incredibly talented songwriter, producer, and composer Maks Gabriel. He has music on Yellowstone, True Blood, and Monarch. Such a great and talented guy! The day we wrote Bettin’ On Us, we wanted to sit down and write something fun. So much of the music rolling around at the time was sad and lonely, and we wanted the opposite. We wanted to celebrate when you work hard for something and finally see it pay off and put that powerful emotion in a song. On a more musical note, has your sound or style changed since shifting from Jill & Julia to The Pretty Wild? How do songs like "Bettin On Us" represent where your duo is currently? When we first started writing music, we were young! So, it has changed quite a bit over the years. We found more grit and a heavier sound as we got older. After playing live for so many years, there is not one song we write where we aren’t thinking about how it would sound live to a crowd and what we want to perform in our show sets. Our live show is what we live for; you can’t beat that in-person connection feeling of playing a song out loud to real live people. Instagram Facebook

Moving through pop, garage, and hip-hop genres, Kanda eagerly releases his latest single ahead of the Christmas season. His vocalization dips between vibrantly rapped verses and a melodic swing that sways you in his chosen direction. Kanda has an inimitable energy that is impactfully heard through each word he professes as his rhyme schemes embed themselves into your mind. As a whole, the composition of "Running Away" manages to take a theme that could be seen as somber and places a great emphasis on the optimistic outcome of what happens when you persevere through a situation and continue not to lose sight of who you are. Delving into this outlook in such a profound way, we're awestruck by Kanda's originality that is immaculately heard in every beat of "Running Away." His music catalog looks like it will be filling up with more sonic bliss come 2023, and we're thrilled to hear what lessons Kanda will shine a light on next. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Kanda! Congratulations on the release of your latest single, "Running Away." After listening to this song, we could relate to it in a way that felt personal to us, but we would love to know – what does "Running Away" mean to you? Thank you so much!!!! Running Away is a track that many can relate to due to the fact that it closes in on common stresses in everyday life that people face. I have chosen to compliment these lyrics with an upbeat instrumental in showing that stress and negativity can be transitioned into something positive. You master such a mature sound for your age, and we mean that as a huge compliment! Where does this wisdom come from, and is it fairly easy for you to put it into the songs you create? My wisdom definitely comes from my father's influence on me. His hard work ethic alongside his determination and willpower have led me to believe that if I want something, I need to make it happen. Over the years, songwriting has become much easier for me as I have a greater perspective of the world and know how to get past the creative block artists sometimes have With musical influences such as Dave, J Hus, Loyal Carner, and Labrinth, how have you been able to take inspiration from their sound and blend it into a sound so unique to yourself? It's such a cliche thing to say, but I always strive to stand out from the crowd and be 'different.' It's a major plus that I have the ability to rap, sing and storytelling simultaneously, because I like to bring all of the qualities together to create something special. Being in London to pursue your music, where were you located previously? Have you found that your environment has contributed to your creative success as an artist? My family live in Coventry, and while I love Coventry and have done so much in that music scene, I feel like expanding to London was just a necessity if I wanted to take music seriously. As of yet, I haven't done as much networking as I would have liked to, but in 2023 I will be at many events and music performing nights! I will say that I am so glad to have made the friends I have at university. They strive for me to become well-known and better as an artist, and they love my music which genuinely means the world to me. We're excited to hear that you have more in store for us come 2023! So what can we expect to be on the lookout for? I'm going to keep it sweet and simple: a lot. Expect a lot from me in 2023 because we are definitely going harder than we ever have before. New songs, more shows, and more random content for my followers and viewers to enjoy!! Facebook
- Kate Yahn Flies High Above The Chaos In "Just Good Enough"
Vancouver-based singer-songwriter and folk rock/modern country recording artist Kate Yahn sweetens our speakers with an empowering anthem for self-growth in her latest single, "Just Good Enough." Kate Yahn's debut EP was a trio of carefully curated covers as her big introduction to Vancouver's diverse music scene. With her forthcoming EP, she's ready to combine the glamour and strength of rock n' roll with sophisticated storytelling and danceable rhythms. Yahn proudly wears her heart on her sleeve for listeners to connect with, and her latest single, "Just Good Enough," is no exception. This song feels like home—Kate Yahn serenades us with deeply introspective yet uplifting lyricism while the heartwarming instrumentals feel like a sonic blanket of comfort. She says it's a song "that captures the exhale after holding your breath for a very long time," and you can feel that with every beat, breath, and melody. The instrumentals are as radiant as ever, blessing the speakers with a warm folk rock/country atmosphere while Kate Yahn examines a past relationship and the turmoil this person caused. Although the lyrics are deeply emotional and peek into Kate Yahn's diary, the song feels like this refreshing sigh of relief where you can finally move on from what (or who) is no longer serving you. The earworm melodies make this song a pleasure to listen to, and Kate Yahn's powerful, clear, and gripping vocals are the succulent cherry on top. Don't fall—fly above all that's beneath you with help from Kate Yahn's uplifting new single, "Just Good Enough," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Kate Yahn. Kudos to you for overcoming past relationship troubles and making a comeback with singles like "Just Good Enough." When did you first feel inspired to create this confessional piece? Hey, thank you! This was my first experience writing, and when I walked in the room, the first question my collaborator asked me was: "Okay, Kate, who broke your heart?" My first instinct was to not confront that time/person/ but to instead take a detour and write about something easier for me to talk about. The song we wrote that afternoon had the same form but different lyrics, a different title, and told an entirely different story. After trying over and over again to connect with the original lyrics and not being able to, I felt inspired to change it. I knew it was about something deeper and more painful. So, I called up a female collaborator of mine, and we just chatted about who we are today and questioned what our lives would be like if we were still with the people that shaped our ideas of what it was like to be in a relationship. It was a beautiful conversation, which eventually lead to the idea of having empathy for your past self, especially when you were in a situation where you couldn't see clearly, and moving forward knowing that sometimes it's okay to be "Just Good Enough." And it's also okay to want more than that for yourself. Why did you choose to provide such danceable and uplifting instrumentals in "Just Good Enough," even though your lyrics were rather emotional? Did these instrumentals help represent that exhale after holding your breath? It just happened naturally. Like I said, this song has changed and evolved countless times — my band likes to say this is version 7 — and we gave it that uplifting sound when it was still in its original form. When we rewrote the lyrics, I wanted to avoid dwelling too much on the negatives of the relationship to match the tempo and feel of the melody we created. I wanted to save space in the song to dance and celebrate the mistakes that make us human. Speaking of the instrumentals in "Just Good Enough," what sound, style, or genre did you envision? Did you have any influences in mind when in the studio? On the first day, we all thought it sounded like a Joni Mitchell song, with lots of folk and storytelling elements, then it went a little too country, ha! I was really inspired by modern influences like Maggie Rogers and Kacey Musgrave and (of course) my absolute favorite band, Fleetwood Mac. How do you want "Just Good Enough" to impact listeners? What do you want them to feel and experience? During the lyrical creation of the song, my friend/collaborator Michaela and I really wanted to drive the point of having empathy for ourselves. I want a sense of relief and exhale to come from this song. For people to dance, connect, and sing their hearts out. Instagram Facebook
- Indiana Bones Spearheads A Double Release Worth Tuning Into
Blues and folk musician Indiana Bones hails from Australia's gold coast with a sound akin to Seasick Steve, Tom Waits, and The Black Keys. Once described by Classic Rock Mag as a 'dusty Aussie, banging out homicidal blues rock,' he's recently armed himself with his resonator guitar. Joining trails with production architect and drummer George Carpenter and Dale Walker - virtuoso guitarist for Megaritual- this team spearheads tracking his latest double release. Kicking things off with a follow-up to his earlier cover of Tom Waits' timeless record "Goin' Out West," Indiana Blues returns with "Goin' Out West (One More Time)." A resonant chamber of reverberations lingers as Indiana Bones performs with a gusto that drives into your soul. Through the progressive finesse he attaches to his musicianship, the mind-altering nuances speak wonders throughout this record. Indiana Bones has us floored with a nostalgic grit and a mesmerizing tenacity that runs rampant in the course of the classic melodies performed. The sustain in each guitar strum and distressed percussion patterns emanate an obscure atmosphere that goes splendidly alongside his haunting vocal performance. Using an impeccable blend of time and space to accentuate the psychedelic hues conveyed, Indian Bones knows how to create a classic forcefield custom to his ruminating contribution to highway rock n roll sprinkled in blues. Across the spectrum of his expansive stylings, this double release means we get even more of Indiana Bones. From blues/rock to a more traditional folk ballad, "Wait For Me" has us leaping into a salutary charter that gently pulls apart pieces of our hearts. Dazzling with snare rolls and elusive guitar plucks, the minimalistic approach to the instrumentation allows us to feast on the passion instilled into Indian Bones' unalloyed lyrical motifs. With its tantalizing timbres, this sonic expression is a message to a loved one that has Indiana Bones cunningly testing the waters in the event of his incarceration. Yet, it's hard not to deny him of his request when the melodies seep into your soul with their captivating grasp. Knowing that Indiana Bones wears the many hats he does, it's no surprise that his double release grandly touches on his artistic virtuoso. So, with something for everyone to enjoy, make sure you don't miss out on "Goin' Out West (One More Time)" and "Wait For Me." Welcome to BuzzMusic, Indiana Bones! This double release truly has us basking in the best of your artistry. We're thrilled to have you chatting with us about it! Could you please take us into the inspiration behind the concept of these two songs released? G'day Buzz, thank you for having me! This year has been a struggle for me in some ways, dealing with depression and fatigue, which is what lead me to write both of my new songs. The first, Goin' Out West (One More Time) is a follow-up to the cover I released last year of Tom Waits' 'Goin' Out West,' and so the sound was inspired by that, and all of the other southern blues rock songs before and after; Seasick Steve, R.L. Burnside, The Black Keys. The song is about driving in an empty tank, pushing yourself when you think you have nothing left. Wait For Me is more of a lament in the form of a letter to a loved one, pleading for their patience during my incarceration. Despite the aforementioned struggles, I am still lucky in so many ways, one being love, and so I suppose I was just reminding my wife that I will still love her, no matter what happens. I would never ask her to wait for me if I went away. Maybe for an overnighter. The sounds produced in each song are brilliant as they reach our speakers. So what was it like working with George Carpenter and Dale Walker to execute this latest installment? Working with George as a Producer was a different experience for me. Firstly because he is both a talented instrumentalist/Producer for some amazing artists in the blues/folk genres here in Queensland; Karl S Williams and Little Georgia. I gave him a larger allowance for creative input and the result is this rich, layered, controlled chaos that churns through each of the tracks. We recruited Dale for help with the acoustic guitar layers on the tracks, who is an incredibly talented musician and so easy to work with. We recorded the guitars live together for the songs, with Goerge on my homemade suitcase drum, and the energy and vibe were amazing. You can hear it in the songs. What has your experience been with a double release? Do you find this benefits you more as an artist, or is this done because you choose to operate this way? I originally came to Goerge with three songs I was working on, and the two you hear stood out to him as being almost like two sides of the same coin, so we decided to work on those two together as a double-release. It was really rewarding because storytelling has always been my favorite part of making music, and we got to really build out that world. What main messages would you like your audience to grasp from each song? Don't give up. There's always something to keep goin' for. Like love. If you're low on that, just keep creating. Create your own beauty, write your story. What has been your biggest accomplishment in 2022? Apart from releasing some music, I've also been working on writing some films, so I'm excited about those. And hey, I'm here, I'm working hard, and I'm happy to say that I'm feeling pretty damn good. You're gonna be hearing a lot more from me. Thanks :) Instagram Facebook

Niche's dark nuances are matched with prominent tonal energy, and the words to back it as an ominous shadow of textured layers can be heard in his vocal delivery, Bringing forth an urgency to the soundscape as he instills a chaotic atmosphere through flickers of sirens and helicopters, Niche demonstrates an assertive presence before the song even begins. Conveying an undeniable swagger with every lyric he finesses, there's an unfeasible confidence that oozes from Niche's style as he raps words like, "big bank, big bank accounts. I'm in deep; no passing out. Ten toes, I'm staying down. This a friend like pen pals." Welcome to BuzzMusic, Niche. We love your energy in your latest song, "Tell Em." What moment or story inspired such a heavy-hitting track? Just like my newest track, Lullabye, Tell em was inspired by my life and how I choose to live it. Growing up in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Toronto, having major setbacks, and finding the strength and courage to rise through it, inspired this single. It’s also my first single, so it is an introduction to my energy, aspirations, and goals. It shares how important it is to stay true to oneself while working hard daily to bring your dreams into reality. We love how detailed the production is, and listening to it on great speakers helps every detail stand out. What was it like tackling the production, and did you know the vision you wanted to achieve? Well, Production can be tricky! It can make and break your vision, so Yes, I knew how I wanted the song to be produced. Working with the right people is very important to bring life to your idea, and I usually say I am so blessed to have my producer. Yes, I knew the vision I wanted to achieve right away because I see the end product of my tracks in my head. Finding the right people to execute my vision has always been the challenging part, but now, after ten years, I can say that my team is built for success! Inspired by many greats like Biggie Smalls, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar, how would you say they've helped you form your sound? I would not say “form my sound” more so “Motivated me to hone my skills” Listening to these individuals and many more developed my love for music. I want to be able to create music that someone else can listen to and be inspired the same way I was. What advice do you have for individuals looking to get their start in music? FAITH!! You have to believe in yourself and the dream. Before even starting in music, build a team that can keep you accountable. You and your team will foster the dream together. It’s faster to move in a group than independently. What's next for you? My EP is coming out soon, and a few singles before that. So stay tuned for the journey. Instagram

Congratulations on releasing your latest single, "The Best Is Yet To Come." We love the twist that comes from this remix! What was it like working with Lady Blackice to bring this rendition forth? Me and DJ Lady Blackice went to college together, but we had lost sight of each other since. At the beginning of last year, we saw each other, and it was just so fun! We had not seen each other since the end of our music studies in 2014. I remembered that, at the time, she was already super talented in music production, and after having heard her most recent remixes, I wanted to work with her. The song rearrangement was done remotely, but the communication flowed very well with her. It was all natural! We think it's extremely clever how you renamed the title of this track when rereleasing it. What prompted this approach, and how did you know this was the song you wanted to remix? I renamed the song (which was first called "The Past Is The Past") because after sharing it with my fans, it was the part "The Best Is Yet To Come" that stuck in their minds, which is the hook at the end of the chorus. And the public is always right! I had self-produced the song in summer of 2022, and this version was rather folk-pop, but I was not 100% satisfied. I needed an even more mainstream version, hence the idea of making an electronic remix and working with Lady Blackice. I believe that the public will appreciate this new, more modern version even more! With musical influences like Adele, Elton John, Queen, Sam Smith, Donna Summer, and Ella Fitzgerald, how do you find they inspire the sound you've made for yourself? These artists have greatly influenced my way of singing because I have studied them a lot since I was a teenager. All of them also use the piano a lot as a base in their songs, which I also do. On the musical composition side, they are pros of catchy choruses, so without wanting to, I think I am too! How is the creative process different from creating an original song to creating a remix? The song was already all composed and recorded. For me, most of the work was done. I just needed to send all my instrumental and vocal tracks to Lady Blackice, and she really did the heavy lifting in changing the sounds there. I gave her some inspirational ideas, but the remix is really the result of her artistic sense. She only kept my original vocals and the piano and redid the rest of the arrangement. Most of the time, I am the one creating the background music too, so it was nice to have someone else do it and bring her own flavor to the song. What's next for you? I am a singer first and always will be, but I want to get more seriously into music production, both for my own songs and for those of other artists. I love writing music so much, and I love to collaborate, so I would like to do this even more than last year. I also hope to do more shows and maybe even go on tour! Time will tell. First project: a week's vacation in Cancun with my best friend in mid-January. It will surely inspire me for the new year! li.sten.to/veronna
- 2920 Proves Distance Has Nothing On Them
Distance has brought together the profound offerings of the artistic duo 2920. Shane Leigh and his partner Kat Mahoney grew up in Brooklyn, NY, creating music as solo artists on their own respective paths. Learning music production and releasing melodies under his label Nuh Romp Records, Shane Leigh uses the moniker Zek Jr for his solo work. Over 20 years, Kat Mahoney has recorded one-shot covers using her given name and was further propelled into music by watching MTV Unplugged – teaching her how to master her craft. In 2020, she and Shane Leigh decided to create music together. What began as a hobby quickly became a series of original songs written and composed by Shane Leigh - thus forming 2920. Two years later and 2920 miles apart, they've released a five-track EP to the public, sharing their creative ventures. Commencing with emulating synth textures and an energetic wave of entrancing melodies courtesy of Kat Mahoney, "Never Better" is the short, sweet intro track that immediately sends your mind into a sonic time warp. In just 36 seconds, we're transported to an ethereal atmosphere that has us yearning for more as we eagerly welcome in "Backyard Shandy." The contrasting elements of "Backyard Shandy" take a boisterous turn as 2920 unveils gritty guitar riffs and a sizzling effervescence that shakes things up. Taking us into a nostalgic forcefield of varying elements, a timeless essence is presented in the lulling sounds we choose to pursue in a hunt for solicitous feeling. Protruding dark undercurrents and distortion embody the soul of "Majonzi" as it falls at number three on the tracklist. However, what we love about this record is that 2920 offers up an alternate version as the final song on their self-titled EP, which showcases yet another side of their artistry. Through a warm embrace of guitar plucks, spellbinding harmonies, and the sparse percussion that lingers through the uncanny entirety of the original, 2920 conveys an old-school 70s atmosphere through the dreamy and mystical essence driven by the vibrant duo in which they offer a night and day selection to suit the listeners needs. When we take our attention to the alternative version, an entirely new dynamic is brought to life. The entity that is "Majonzi Alternate Version" glimmers in a newfound light through bright hues and buoyancy. This portrays the dynamism they whimsically achieve through creative avenues while profoundly cementing their uniqueness. Wistful acoustic guitar strums and flowing soul are prominent in 2920's "In Visual." The slow tempo transmutes into a livelier performance touching on the endings that love can face. As Kat Mahoney accompanies Shane Leigh through a back-and-forth escapade of direct storytelling, the passion in one another's voice makes this song the holy grail of 2920. Their velvety croons speak life into each dynamic puzzle piece they convey, and we know one thing's for sure – we need more of 2920 and the desire they profess through dazzling songwriting. 2920 makes it so your imagination runs rampant and anticipates each melody they bring forth to their audience. Between purely instrumental breaks in the songs, Shane Leigh and Kat Mahoney emanate harmonies that put you at ease and further allow you to sink into the trance this EP has over you. Welcome to BuzzMusic, 2920! We absolutely love the dynamic the two of you bring to the table throughout this EP. Could you please take us into the concept you've placed behind these five songs? Shane: Sure! The Never Better Intro was meant to bridge different elements of our sound and lead the listener into the EP, a sort of funnel into the eclectic sounds to come. I used some synth, a solo played backwards, and heavy fx on our vocals from Majonzi for this purpose. The intro's forlorn sound matches the themes of love and loss found on the EP. Backyard Shandy was born of the isolation of the pandemic. The large, joyous, family backyard barbecues of my youth were gone, even in the summer of 2020 when we were hopeful it would be safer to meet. I missed them, but rather than write a maudlin song I put as much energy into Shandy as I could muster; brisk pacing, loads of lead guitar and jaunty lyrics, and vocal melody. The song itself is a counterpoint to my grief at what was lost while at the same time being a testament to it. In Visual is the first original song by 2920. Our first single was a cover song released in 2020 on Bandcamp. We decided to do an original next - but we didn't have a defined sound. I looked at the elements of our cover song, acoustic and electric guitar, dual vocals, an honest-to-god solo, and rock drumming. I set out to write a song that married all the same elements and landed on something that was reminiscent of the 60's Laurel Canyon scene and its electrified child, '70s arena rock. As there were two of us, I wrote lyrics that told of he said/she said failed relationship. Very Fleetwood Mac! You offer up an array of sounds, all while staying in a lane you execute extremely well. Do each of you happen to have a favorite song from this project? What's your reasoning behind that? Shane: My favorite song on the album is definitely In Visual. It took two years to produce the final version. I wanted it to be sonically rich and structurally dynamic. That meant experimenting, which as a full-time father, I had little time to do. I poured everything I learned from my producing mentor John LsSala into the song. I re-recorded many parts as I improved in my guitar playing. I think the song is the embodiment of the 70's, and LA rock feel 2920 sometimes emulates. Kat: There are a lot of elements from each song I like, but my favorite song to play and record was Backyard Shandy, the beat of which reminded me a lot of the intro song for Fraggle Rock. The imagery reminded me of what I'd seen growing up in Brooklyn. Park days where a family would be having a birthday party or some celebration, and there'd be a group playing dominos and lots of food cooking on the small bbq grills. The chorus also is a good reminder to move forward, not so much move on and forget, but just don't get stuck in the past. It's a part of who you were, and take that with you as you move forward in life. Being so far in distance, what does your creative process tend to look like? How long did it take you to bring this project to life? Shane: It took us many months to come up with a workflow that even close to worked! The best version of our process went like this: I would write the bulk of the song before building a preliminary demo. I would send that demo plus lyrics and chords to Kat, who would give notes. I would go back into hermit mode and keep adding elements; eventually, we'd have a full song. Kat would record her parts and send them back to me; I would then record my own. Vocals were always last. Once everything was laid down, I would make a full producer turn, adding texture and mixing the songs. It took almost two and a half years to birth Never Better, but we learned much from that time investment. Kat: Being 2,920 miles apart created some hurdles. We could not just get together and "jam" or discuss a song. When recording a track, if I lost pace, I did not have Shane there to restart the recording. But we'd chat a lot, send small videos back and forth, and sometimes I'd send him several acoustic tracks for him to choose from. We meshed really well, even if time and distance made for delayed feedback and production. I'd practice and sometimes end up coming up with some interesting (although not always planned) strum or sound that would add to things—for example, the Majonzi Alternate version. Shane, let me rework that song completely and add a mandolin. It wasn't planned or discussed. I sent back the file and said something like, "delete the track if you hate it." He liked it, and we kept it. We're huge fans of artists offering up an alternate version of a song that sits so well in the soul. What inspired you to do this with "Majonzi"? Shane: Largely, it was that we needed another song to lengthen the EP! But that need turned into an idea: what if we took Majonzi and did two versions, one that had more of pathos and feeling and another that was closer to what Kat did before we linked up, one-shot (live) covers? The lyrics described how it felt to lose my father, so my take was filled with pain and longing. Kat's version was uptempo; she wanted an almost French-style jazzy electric sound from me, which was a fun challenge. So two very different songs from one wellspring. Kat: I like one-shots and live tracks. Shane knows this. When we were recording Backyard Shandy he proposed that I do Majonzi in my style and had envisioned a "live" version. Well, the song is complex, and so a live version isn't totally possible, especially since there is a modulation that requires moving a capo. But the final version you hear is one where we broke out of the rock vibe of the 1970s to 1990s and embraced an upbeat jazz sound. I liked the solo bc it feels like it's taking a journey. While the lyrics are sad and about loss, the guitar solo by Shane feels like a path that is being walked. What can we expect to see and hear next from 2920? We plan to release at least one single in 2023, maybe two. I'm writing for a full-length Zek, Jr album, but once that's done, Kat and I will start work on our first LP, hopefully in early 2024. We can't wait to see where the writing will take us. linktr.ee/nuhromprecords
