- Jay Luke Travels To The Dark Side In “You’ll Never Beat The Addiction”
Serving up a hot plate of reality is a singer-songwriter, musician, and rock recording artist Jay Luke with a painstakingly honest new single and music video entitled "You'll Never Beat The Addiction." Honing his craft and paying his dues in the music scene since 2003, Jay Luke has proved himself as a timeless act. He's performed gigs with Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses, W.A.S.P., Metal Church, To/Die/For from Finland, Joey Belladonna of Anthrax, Richie Ramone of The Ramones, and more. With tens of thousands of streams under his belt, Jay Luke is using his platform to spread awareness and express relatable battles through tracks like the recent "You'll Never Beat The Addiction." It's a hard-hitting, cut-throat rock song that takes a hard look at the demons many of us battle and the consequences that come with our actions. He also released an accompanying music video for the song, produced by Mary Frances Jackson and Chris Balton. The grim black-and-white scene that takes place in what looks like an abandoned construction site sees Luke embodying the wicked ways of addiction and knowing that he has the power to destroy dreams, families, and lives. All while the thrilling rock instrumentals pounce through our speakers alongside Jay Luke's passionate vocals, he hits us over the head with harsh realities while standing knee-deep in sinkholes that seem like rock bottom. It's one of those music videos that make you think twice about what you just experienced and the horrific toll that addiction can have on our lives. We invite you to stare reality dead in the face with Jay Luke's conceptual new music video for his single "You'll Never Beat The Addiction." Find the music video on YouTube and the single on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Jay Luke. What made you want to take this conceptual route and discuss the harsh realities of addiction in your new single, "You'll Never Beat The Addiction?" Most of my music/lyrics always come from personal things that I have gone through or have been witness to. For this single, I discussed addiction from the perspective of the actual addiction itself, watching the addict come back and back again. This song isn't necessarily just aimed at one addiction, in general, it covers anything that people tend to overdo, from gambling, drugs, drinking, sex, eating, etc. I suppose the most obvious of the addictions that pop out is Heroin. I have seen so many friends lose battles to so many addictions by just being around certain circles and scenarios where temptation is too great. Once you fall into a rabbit hole, it is hard to get out of, as there aren't many casual users of certain substances if you dabble, you end up on the end of a hook that you can't break free from. It is a pattern that the longer you're around, the more you notice. It starts out with someone asking for money to pay for things that never get purchased or being behind on bills, then it goes to further lies and eventually theft to afford to keep a habit going or worse. Everyone in the vicinity of that tornado gets affected by it. A few dear friends of mine were taken by the curse of chasing the euphoria of heroin, and to see the way it destroys someone you love and care about is just devastating. It is far from glamorous and tears apart so much. Why did you choose to shoot the "You'll Never Beat The Addiction" music video at an abandoned construction site? Do those visuals have a deeper significance? The location of the video shoot gave the vibe of desolation and loss that I felt was representative of the overall ominous subject matter; shooting in black and white also reinforced the significance as well. We lucked out on the location by chance, and within the building, there were many remnants of the very things discussed. Shelter for addicts, where we found a lot of paraphernalia that was indicative of a troubled user that lost everything. What was it like working with Mary Frances Jackson and Chris Balton for the "You'll Never Beat The Addiction" music video? How did they help bring your vision to life? Mary Frances Jackson and Chris Balton are pretty much the only teams I work with on visual art relating to my music. This is the 3rd or 4th project we have worked on with my music, and I am just so grateful for the way we seem to fit like a glove in joining the visual to the audio on these types of things. We have done a few music videos, and during the pandemic, we filmed a performance for the NPR Tiny Desk Concert contest together. I feel very comfortable with them, and we waste no time. Once shooting and editing begin we know what we want to achieve, and it is efficiently accomplished. They bring out the best in me and push me in directions that challenge me, which is what art is all about, finding a way just a few steps out of the comfort zone you are used to. Nothing is too wild or crazy, and they encourage only amazing ideas. Do you usually create such honest and compelling songs like "You'll Never Beat The Addiction?" Do personal themes like this often make their way into your songs? Serious Personal themes like "You'll Never Beat The Addiction" are the basis of almost every one of my songs. I have always felt unless you are speaking from a point of being there and not a fantasy viewpoint, it is sort of see-through or fake. I try to keep my lyrics about things I know, felt, have been around, or have been through, and that hopefully translates to the listener as well. Whether it is about love, life, obstacles, or observing things, I keep the lyrical matter as real as it is to me on a personal level. My lyrics are the biggest doorway into my life. I listen to a song I wrote and am instantly transported to where I was, what I was doing, and who I was with when I wrote it. What's next for you? At the current time, I am heavy at work on my fourth solo album, which this single will be included. I am also in the studio with my other band, Reach For The Sky, working on our 4th album and in the studio finishing up the debut of another band I am in called The Stones Of Atlantis. To say that time free time is sparse is an understatement, but I love being immersed in the creative process and seeing ideas come to life. Facebook Twitter
- Rapper Kansah Releases A New Single For His Wife As A Gift For Their Wedding Anniversary
Rapper Kansah, who hails from the United Kingdom. Kansah began his rapping career during his law studies. Even though he had a passion for music since he was a little child, he never thought of pursuing it as a career. During the time that he was studying law, he wrote his first song, which was titled "Alexander McQueen." Kansah discovered that making songs and rapping may be a therapeutic outlet for him while writing about it. After some time, he came out with the song "Alexander McQueen," which was performed for the first time and received pleasantly surprising responses. Because of this, he gained even more motivation, and he started writing additional songs in the hip-hop genre. Kansah, a rapper from the United Kingdom, made his debut with the track "Alexander McQueen," which was a dope rap, and now he's back with another dope rap track called "Do me Je je." Kansah released the song on August 26th, 2022, and it was recorded in the UK and Lagos, Nigeria, and produced in LA by Dr Chaii. It is currently downloadable through many music websites and services, including Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and many other music websites and services. The complete composition of the music, in addition to its production, is quite tasty. Excellent work was done on every facet of the song, including the lyrical content, the beats, the texture, and the flow. The lyrics to the song have a lot of meaning, and they try to convey an essential point regarding how society judges individuals. He made certain that the caliber of the lyrics did not deteriorate in any way, shape, or form at any point during the song's length. On the occasion of the couple's first wedding anniversary, he penned this song so that his wife might perform it as a gift to him on that special day. What does the song signify when it refers to itself by its title? (Do Me Je Je). They have agreed to celebrate their wedding anniversary on August 26th, the date they selected. Do me Je Je translates to "love me tenderly or softly," meaning "do me Je Je." This song was created in Los Angeles by Dr. Chaii, who was also responsible for composing Chris Brown's song "Questions" and has collaborated with vocalists such as Sean Paul and Dua Lipa. Additionally, Dr. Chaii has collaborated with several other musicians. This song features a performance from the Nigerian pop artist who goes by the name "Singah." He thinks that this song captures the experience of falling in love and everything that comes along with it well. Even though he often develops rap and hip hop, he decided to give afrobeat a shot to give the song a vibe better suited for the warm weather. It was done to give the music an atmosphere that was more fitting for the music. It has proven to be the most difficult and fascinating project we have worked on up to this point. Instagram

The new album kicks off with the anthemic introductory track, "Anything You Want," rolling through our speakers with a lively rock instrumental. Vinyl Floor sets the album's tone with this vibrant and exciting track that displays all the love and passion we could ask for. Everything from the catchy melodies to the feel-good instrumentals brings a sense of rejuvenation that any listener will appreciate. Slowing down the groove with track number two, "Clock With No Hands," Vinyl Floor spins us into a more introspective and jazzy vibe with rhythmic piano chords, groovy drums, and their unique vocal performances. It's a passionate song that sees the lead vocalist confessing his love for someone special and knowing they can't find that love anywhere else. This song is a great way to get to know the dynamic and charismatic stylings of Vinyl Floor. Keeping the emotion at a high is track number three, "Between Lines Undone," which kicks off with melancholy and grim melodies that linger into the first verse. Vinyl Floor's lyrics and melodies in this song dance into more personal and emotional themes, depicting the realization that all signs point to someone special. The song's gentle harmonies and soft brass section, alongside the savory instrumentals, truly make for an engaging listening experience. The album's fourth track, "Dear Apollon," opens on a similar soft and gentle note with soothing percussion and tender piano melodies that lead into Vinyl Floor's beautiful vocal portrayals and intimate lyrics. This song is another sincere experience that sees Vinyl Floor asking for a sign on where to go next and wishing for some clarity on this confusing road. The unison vocal harmonies and gentle clarinet bring listeners deep into nostalgic musical experiences that feel like a warm embrace. Reaching the album's fifth track and mid-way point, "Ever, The Optimist," Vinyl Floor ramps up the energy and good vibes with spirited folk/rock instrumentals and their uniquely charismatic performances. It's a playful and upbeat song that perfectly showcases Vinyl Floor's dynamic instrumentals and their conceptual lyrics about "Ever, The Optimist" and his many tales. It's a feel-good and quite humorous song that brings a ray of light to the album. Kicking up the energy and emotion is track number six, "Pretty Predictable," which rips through our speakers with groaning electric guitar riffs and haunting melodies alongside punchy drums and gripping vocals. It's a chilling listening experience that sees Vinyl Floor jumping into their affinity with rock music while smashing our speakers in the heaviest melodies to portray the song's deep, groundbreaking emotion. This turbulent and haunting track is perhaps our favorite from the album. Onto the album's seventh song and title track, "Funhouse Mirror," Vinyl Floor takes us down a path reminiscent of The Beatles' Magic Mystery Tour but with a modern alternative/folk twist. The blend of warm piano melodies and crunchy electric guitars alongside the lead singer's crooning vocals truly make this song a breath of fresh air. It's another dynamic and deeply engaging song that perfectly encapsulates not only the album but the skill and musical prowess that Vinyl Floor delivers time and again. Sinking into the eighth track, "Death Of A Poet," Vinyl Floor takes us into the depths of emotion with melancholy piano melodies and crooning vocals that depict guilty situations and grieving those who've impacted us. Before we know it, Vinyl Floor shifts into this funhouse carnival vibe to ramp up the passion and energy while adding a dash of their playful personalities. It's quite the cinematic and cathartic listening experience that closes like the end of a major motion picture. Turning up the energy is track number nine, "Stare, Scare," which pumps through our speakers with heavy rock instrumentals and beaming sci-fi synths to kick it all into gear. Vinyl Floor's grunge influence in this song brings another dynamic layer to the album that we're happy to peel back. It's an invigorating track that rumbles and roars with groaning rock instrumentals and tightly-knit guitar riffs alongside pounding drums that take us to the harmonious outro without a dull moment. Landing on the album's tenth and outro track, "Days," Vinyl Floor wastes no time and jumps into their shimmering and cinematic instrumentals. The song's peaceful and warm vocals bless us with the sweetest melodies while sharing intimate moments and experiences that encourage us to enjoy each day, especially the little moments. It's a vibrant song that perfectly closes the album with such beautifully arranged instrumentals, while Vinyl Floor sends us to the outro with the utmost power and passion. - Tarah Who? Cuts To The Chase In "Yay or Nay"
Based in Los Angeles, the scorching hot power-punk/grunge band and duo Tarah Who? cuts the bullshit in their hard-hitting new single, "Yay or Nay." Tarah Who? is grunge-punk sage Tarah Carpenter and drummer/backing vocalist Coralie Herve. With sounds reminiscent of Alanis Morissette, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, and Spinnerette, Tarah Who? won the lifewtr competition in 2021 and recently played gigs at Hellfest and Wheels and Waves Festival. The ladies are currently working with Jason Orme and Norm Block (producer of L7) on their upcoming album. Until then, listeners can indulge in Tarah Who? 's latest single, "Yay or Nay," in collaboration with the fierce Spain-based project Faul. The song is a cut-throat anthem in support of independent female rock musicians, championing straightforward answers. Enough with the "not this time" and "we'll give you a call," Tarah Who? is asking for a simple "Yay or Nay." Hitting play on the new track, "Yay or Nay," it's nothing we wouldn't expect from the edgy and grungey stylings that Tarah Who? has delivered in the past. Their haunting vocals and crunchy guitars pounce through the speakers with attitude and a blunt nature that brings heaps of intensity. The song's many transitions keep us on our toes with Faul and Tarah Who?'s infectious energy leaves us shaking in our boots. Faul's Corinna sings in her native German tongue to add a personal edge while their instrumentals smash our eardrums to pieces. It's an invigorating song and an even more invigorating anthem for respecting someone enough to tell it how it is. Cut to the chase and don't hold back with Tarah Who?'s recent collaboration with Faul, the striking and anthemic single "Yay or Nay," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome back to BuzzMusic, Tarah Who? What led your group to create such an anthemic, meaningful, and intense song like "Yay or Nay"? What inspired the concept? Ha! Anger! lol! I wanted to collaborate with V, who is the drummer of Bala, who I love, but she also plays bass and screams in Faul. During covid, I decided to get in touch with a few musicians (friends) and bands to see if they would be interested in collaborating. The message behind the collaboration is 1- to support each other and 2- to show that there is no competition between bands and between women. Those collaborations have a common theme. Because we are all independent, hard-working female musicians, we go through similar situations. "Yay or Nay" is about not being able to get a proper response from the music industry; it is about not being respected as artists, etc... What was it like working alongside Faul when creating "Yay or Nay?" How did that collaboration come about? Well, actually, it was a little bit of a challenge. Firstly, We had never actually met in person. I had been following V because I follow Bala. Until then, I was mostly in touch with Anx, the singer of Bala. Then V directed me to her other project called Faul. I listened to it and really loved their punk attitude, and there is just a great natural vibe that I was immediately drawn to. Once Faul was into the collaboration idea, I sent them a few ideas and demos. I had the whole thing planned out, but again... We didn't actually know each other! :) So, as much as I was super excited, they must have thought: "what is her deal!" :). We recorded the song with Coralie and Jason Orme, our producer. At that point, I was really hoping that the girls would not let us down because I don't think I had received anything from them yet, but we had to keep our recording schedule. I made up a Spanish part of giving them an idea of where they would add their lyrics and sent them the roughs. A few weeks later, they went into the studio and sent me their tracks. I was SO happy! Not only had they done an excellent job and come up with badass lyrics and attitude, but also the sound engineer, Andres, had sent us on accident the vocal mic test from Laura. From the videos they sent to me after the recording, clearly... they had had a few drinks and did not remember sending me this track. It is so unique and funny that I insisted that we use the track somehow! When Jason opened the file, he was really confused about where this would go in the song, but we decided to use it as an intro and outro and not to tell the girls. Norm Block mixed the song and really had a blast doing it. Doug Krebs mastered the song. "Yay or Nay" turns out to be one of my favorite songs on the album, for how we made it happen, the story, the attitude, and how it turned out! Could you tell us more about the "Yay or Nay" music video? How did you tie the song's theme into the music video? Coralie and I were headed to Europe for some shows and festivals. I told Coralie that while we are there, we have to go to Spain and see if we can shoot a music video for "Yay or Nay". Again, at this point, we have not met the girls from Faul. Laura is touring with her other band, Grima. V has a lot going on because she is part of a local festival happening that weekend. We were able to come down... but we thought, let's just go and see what happens. Even if we end up just having shots of Pontevedra. Turns out, we fell in love with the town! I love Spain, but I discovered a completely new side of Spain. (or should I say, Galicia!). We met V the first night, and she showed us around, we had some traditional food, Estrella (Galician beer), and she took us to the festival that was happening! We got along right away, of course, and it was incredible to see where the girls were from. I can't even explain it! Corinna was around, so I got to spend some time with her at Eduardo's bar, where we ended up shooting the music video. I said to Alex Ochoa, our DP for the video, and Javier Caudillo (director) I want to capture the vibe of the town. Each one of the band members from Faul has their own personality, and that was another thing I wanted to capture. In my eyes, Pontevedra is unique. I don't know if the girls made this experience this way or if it really is, but it was like everyone knew what true punk, grunge, and rock, were. V owns a music school in Pontevedra, we were lucky to go and visit. We saw kids rehearse a song they had written that was really, really good! Jokingly, I said it is scary how good they are because they are so young, but the music was so raw, authentic, and GOOD! We went to the festival the next day to watch the performance of her students. There were different stages, but Coralie and I decided to stay at the kid's stage because I could not believe how good those kids were, and they wrote the songs they were performing!! It is a REAL ROCK school with very talented kids. On the day of the shoot, we all played it by ear. Corinna, V, and Laura have a lot of friends. Two of them, Eduardo and Fredi, own bars. We used Eduardo's bar called Duarte to shoot all of Corinna's and V's shots. We used Fredi's bar called Bar Scandale for my shot in the urinal and Laura's intro and outro shots. The rest is all town, hang out, and Faul's rehearsal room. The girls heard the song for the first time when we started shooting and did not remember Laura's A cappella, so it was a really fun memory as well. Overall, we got to know each other and worked together. We are planning to play some shows together in 2023, and we are super excited to meet again. What was the most rewarding part about creating such a fierce and blunt song like "Yay or Nay?" What did you take away from the experience? For me, outside of having a kick-ass song and music video, the most rewarding part was the friendship that came along with it. Those girls are incredible, fascinating, and smart. It was very refreshing to see all of those people and friends get together to help us make this video happen. Collaborating is hard in a way, but so far, every single one of those collaborations has its own story, and I am happy to say that I have gotten to meet or get to know better musicians, artists, and really, people. We all have our own reasons why we pursue our music so passionately. When we worked with Yur Mum on "Push Me," I was a little more comfortable because Yur Mum and Tarah Who? are close. We have toured together, we already have a strong friendship and connection. They are family. I had never met the girls from Faul, so I was trying to communicate with girls who were probably thinking at one point, " why?!!" lol! My intention behind those collaborations is so much bigger than just releasing a song, and I know I can be a bit intense...but it all worked out, and I hope they keep as much of a good memory as I do! What's next for you? There are a couple more singles that we will be releasing before the release of the album in April 2023. We are also planning to tour, and some of those dates should be with our collaborating artists if everything goes well. We are really excited about this upcoming album and cannot wait to introduce you to all the artists we have been working with (if you don't know them already!). Thanks for your support! With three released projects under her belt, Katasha J is ready to continue evolving as a musician and singer with sweet new tunes like her recent "Coming Back." It's a charming and warm-hearted piece that dissects the profound emotions of loving someone and rekindling that flame to spark a passionate fire once again. We're sure you'll be "Coming Back" for more after hearing Katasha J's heartfelt new single. Find Katasha J's "Coming Back" on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, Katasha J. We love the profound passion and playful feel of your new single, "Coming Back." What inspired you to create this tender and loving new tune? This song was started over a year ago; I can't believe it! I had a session at Rare Heir studios. We were finishing another song and wanted to build a new track. We just kinda freestyled the idea, and then it blossomed from that session! What was it like writing your personal and intimate lyrics for "Coming Back?" Was it easy for you to open your heart and lay it all on the line? When it comes to songwriting, sometimes I just like to write about the concept of love. Not necessarily basing it on my own experience. It'll either be based on my own heartbreak or someone else's. What did you envision for the sound and vibe of "Coming Back?" Did you have any artistic influences in mind when creating this song? When we were vibing with the beat, we wanted the sound to have a 2000's element to it. A very breezy production and smooth sweet vocals. I love a nostalgic sound, so I'm always stuck in the late '90s or early 2000s, haha. What impact did you want to leave on listeners with "Coming Back?" What do you hope they take away from the single? With this song, I really want people to experience everything while listening to it. The vocals, the lyrics, and the production. It's a very happy melody, but the topic and lyrics are bittersweet. The concept of a relationship where you constantly argue but always end up getting back together is a lot of people's experience, so a lot can relate. The visuals are in the works, so everyone can look forward to that in the next month or so! Instagram Twitter

- Crash Your Speakers With SINNER SINNERS’s New Hit, “BIG BIRD”
Los Angeles-based rock band SINNER SINNERS storm the scene with a fiery and anthemic new tune, "BIG BIRD," from their recent 3-track EP, Hanging On. What started in 2009 has now developed into a killer post-punk rock band featuring husband and wife Sam and Steve Thill, Macy Mullen, Michael Amster, Ben Palmer, and Mike McCrary. It's safe to say that the band has found their groove, having opened for acts like Eagles of Death Metal and Nashville Pussy while sharing the stage with Refused, The Sonics, and Black Flag. When it comes to SINNER SINNERS, one thing's for sure; they're guaranteed to combust your senses with their neurotic post-punk brightness and infectious groove. That goes for their recent single, "BIG BIRD," from their vibrant 3-track EP, Hanging On. The song is one hell of a way to kick off a project, locking you in instantly. Expanding on "BIG BIRD," the track opens with beaming electric guitar riffs and rumbling snare drums that leap into the anthemic and orchestra-esque instrumental. Before we know it, Steve Thill's powerful vocals rip through our speakers while SINNER SINNERS shifts into a heavy and punchy hard rock atmosphere. There's so much to hear in this track, from the tightly-knit brass section to the foot-stomping rock instrumentals. SINNER SINNERS has, without a doubt, started a fire with this track, showing no signs of putting it out. There's no wonder why they chose to open their EP with this track; it grabs your attention like a burning truck on the freeway. Bless your ears with a dose of sonic thrills and chills through SINNER SINNERS's recent single, "BIG BIRD," from their 3-track EP, Hanging On, now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, SINNER SINNERS. You had us breaking a sweat after hearing your recent single, "BIG BIRD." What inspired this anthemic and stimulating song? In early 2022 we decided that we wanted to cut a quick EP of cover songs. Next came the decision-making process. As a band, we love playing rock n roll, but as listeners, our catalog is endless. We definitely wanted to do some throwbacks, and what better place to start than the Motown and Stax records hits from one of the greatest times in music? Sam chose “Keep Me Hangin' On” as it was a song that was playing in her household as she was growing up. I have a pretty extensive knowledge of Stax, but Big Bird came out of nowhere. Steve emailed that one to me, and I had honestly never heard it. In addition, we had been talking about doing a song from the Cure for years now, and it just felt like the right time. What was your band's creative process like when creating such a big and bold track like "BIG BIRD?" What was that experience like? As I said before, I had never heard the track before and on my first listen, I wasn’t sure how it was going to fit. It felt too slow for me. Steve and I talked it through, and he said, “I’m hearing a Stooges riff over the verse”. I went home and listened to Funhouse in its entirety, locked myself in my home studio, and an hour later, "Big Bird" was reborn Sinners style. Didn’t even really change the verse riff, just uptempo and a bit of a feel change. I believe it stays true to the original. Why did you choose to place "BIG BIRD" as the intro track of your EP, 'Hanging On?' What role does the song play in the EP? Well, it just hits hard in your face. Great rock n roll feel to kick things off. The horns are epic. Dan And Gavin crushed it on that track, letting loose on the end with a collective improv. I feel like we are gonna have to bring some horns in on our next full-length. Stay tuned! What is the EP, Hanging On, about? How does it contrast and differ from your other projects? It's all covered. Just a fun detour from our normal day-to-day. We love covers, and fans love covers, as it’s always great to hear a new interpretation of songs we all know and love. We always like to throw one at our full-lengths, but this was an opportunity to think outside the box and challenge ourselves with some songs well outside of our genre. We definitely thought through a long list of tracks, but these three just made the cut. They just worked. What's next for you? Well, back to the grind. Steve and I have a bunch of demos ready to be brought to the band for fine-tuning. As with all of our albums, the next will be a progression from the last! Looks like we will be collaborating as a band a bit more in the writing process and hopefully bringing in some amazing guests to rock this thing! Questions answered by Macy Muller, guitarist. We're so impressed with the diverse and dynamic listening experience you've provided with your new single, "How We Go." What inspired you to create this passionate and sensual hit? This song was created from a place of freedom, like most of my music. I have always resonated with afro music and the context of what is being expressed. The frequencies are always elevated, and the lyrical content is perfect for manifestation. It is really heart-centered music, and that's why everyone can't help but dance and move when it's played. I was in the studio one day mixing some of my music, and the instrumental came on, and I immediately started singing the hook. Everything else I did on the song was freestyle or punched-in. I didn't write down any lyrics, I just expressed what was coming from my soul at the moment. Did you create the production and instrumentals for "How We Go" entirely by yourself? What was that behind-the-scenes process like? This beat was not one that I produced myself. I collaborate with many artists all over the world, including Dubai, Spain, London, and other places all over the world. This beat was produced by Danny E. Normally. In most of my songs, I include violin production either embedded in the beat I am working with, or I will create a solo composition for the strings to stand out in the song, whether for an intro, outro, or in the mix. The behind-the-scenes process really comes from first finding the beat and the sound that I resonate with. I don't usually conceptualize the song beforehand, I just express what comes to my spirit in the immediate moment. Sometimes I write, but lately, I have been punching in to really test my artistry and to not get caught up or stuck on lyrics that could sometimes lead to writer's block in an interesting way. After everything was tracked out, I went through and mixed the whole song, from the beat to the adlibs and everything in between. The mixing process usually takes me about a week or two, so I can have time to let the song digest and come back with fresh ears so I can catch the details I want to be mixed down. After that, my co-owner of the studio and lead engineer led the mastering process. Through this process, I will test the song with multiple speakers and even preview it at a club or event with DJ speakers to make sure it will translate smoothly for all types of listening experiences. When the song was completed, I directed the photoshoot for the cover art and the visuals that we were using for promotion. The process is a labor of love, but it is always fulfilling to see an idea come to fruition. Did you have any artistic influences in mind when creating "How We Go?" What sort of sounds, artists, or projects might have influenced this song? I am very inspired by Tems and the way she approaches the afro-wave world. Tems voice is very unique and unlike any other singer, and I love how she embraces her qualities. Wiz Kid and Burna Boy are also artists I study with their instrumentation, approach to lyricism, and the energy they create through their sounds. I always incorporate cultural influences into my music and songwriting, which is why there is a verse in Arabic that is also interwoven with Spanish in this song. How did you want to make your audience feel when hearing "How We Go?" What did you want the song to do for them? I want the audience to feel freedom, harmony, and inspiration. I want the song to allow them to get lost in the sounds and reflect from a place of peace. The lyrical content is really important because what we speak comes to existence, so I manifest it through my music, and I want people to feel that same level of empowerment. We can dream about the life we want, or we can create it. What's next for you? Next, I have an Afro-Wave EP coming out with some similar vibes to How We Go but very dynamic, eclectic, and unique. I stepped outside of myself to create the EP and get lost in more sensual, upbeat, and vibrant music. Along with that, I am constantly performing. I have been on tour for most of the year, so just continuing to ride the performance wave, continue evolving and expanding my sound, and as always, spreading light through the Freedom Waves movement and everything that it stands for. Welcome to BuzzMusic, John Engel. What experiences inspired you to create such an honest and personal single like "STILL FREE, MY COUNTRY?" Thank you for inviting me! This track is quite personal indeed. It’s a bit scary to be opinionated these days. How did the song come about? Actually, two parallel things happened. I’d written a couple of verses during the Bush presidency, expressing my frustration over the way people were manipulated by politicians and religious leaders of all sorts. I felt oppressed and battered by all the grim news and the hatred oozing everywhere, so I had to put that into words. Separately from that, I'd pulled out an instrumental riff I’d written long ago that I really loved but never integrated into anything. I started playing around with it and joining it to a natural chord progression. The musical structure came out of that. I quickly realized those lyrics worked great on that chord progression, with the instrumental parts lending a cool sense of gravitas. The lyrics are, sadly, even more, relevant today, which is why I worked on the song some more, added verses, and recorded it now. Nowadays, everything is extremely polarized; there is so little dialogue and so little truth… it’s all about blinkered beliefs and enemy lines. But it’s not good to stay angry, there has to be hope, and there has to be love. So, both musically and lyrically, I wanted the chorus to form a kind of cocoon, an island, my own imaginary country, that I could always go back to find love, peace, and balance. As the words say, it’s about taking a chance, one step at a time, but I can make that country mine because it starts with my inner self. As individuals, that’s what we can work on. What was the main message or key takeaway that you wanted listeners to pick up on when hearing "STILL FREE, MY COUNTRY?" The main takeaway should be for each of us to remember that we make our own world. The way we live, the experiences we have, the people we are close to — most of us have an impact on that. If you surround yourself with tolerance and love, you will get it back in spades. I hope listeners can relate to the verses and can be inspired by the chorus to work on and trust in their own hearts and private country. Secondly, but more urgently, I hope that, in a small way, the song can motivate people to vote in the next few weeks. How would you describe the sound in "STILL FREE, MY COUNTRY?" What sounds or genres influenced this song? This song has a broad mix of musical influences. It reflects my fondness for blending styles and creating an enveloping sort of atmosphere. There’s definitely a jazz tinge to it, which might bring up reminiscences of early Chicago, LA Express, Steely Dan, or even Chick Corea’s Return To Forever. The chord progressions and airy vibe make me think a little of Quicksilver Messenger Service or Buffalo Springfield. I mention these names with the greatest respect and modesty — I love them, as I love so many other artists who've influenced me. At the end of the day, the whole musical mood of "STILL FREE" is something else entirely, my own humble concoction. What was your favorite part about creating "STILL FREE, MY COUNTRY?" What did you appreciate the most? Every step, every aspect, was fascinating and fun. When you’ve lived with a song on your own for a long time, it’s a wonderful experience to hear it played by other musicians. Rehearsing the song with the group was a thrill, and then when we recorded the horn section, that just brought me to another place! So amazing. Doubling the organ with the girls’ vocals was another high. Forget about the words, and this song can be enjoyed as just a piece of music, a cinematic musical journey! What's next for you? "STILL FREE" is my 5th single, and I’ll keep releasing a new single every month for another year at least. A physical album will be coming out at the end of the year, and there will be live gigs starting early next year. There should be some interesting collaborations in the not-too-distant future, as well as a series of covers. Instagram Facebook
- Hit "Refresh," With the dt's Expressive New Single
Hailing from Central Jersey, genre-blending duo and musicians, the dt's hit the much-needed "Refresh" button in their personal new single. Comprising Dave and Tom, the dt's defy being put aside, and they do so by blending various genres like rock, modern pop, blues, power pop, and folk. They're a dynamic duo well-versed in guitar, bass, drums, and piano, who got together in 2020 out of an itch to start fresh and create a new, needed sound. Delivering on that is the dt's latest single, "Refresh," everything we needed and more. It's an incredibly authentic and genuine song that looks at the dull moments in modern society, wanting to hit the "Refresh" button to feel something once again. The dynamic instrumentals range from pop and adult contemporary to soothing alternative folk, blessing the ears with melodies that will linger long after you hit play. Expanding on the new song, "Refresh," we're met with smooth and warm vocals alongside a tender piano melody that makes its way deeper into the first verse. Alongside the lush acoustic guitar and harmonious background strings, the dt's bless us with relatable lyrics about feeling bored, ignored, and unloved while in search of something new and exciting. There are a few tongue-in-cheek moments in the song with lyrics referencing not feeling alive since that special someone liked your last pic. That aside, it's a sincere piece packed with emotion that helps listeners get to know a deeper layer of Dave and Tom, who've put their minds together to create this heartfelt and honest anthem for change. When life's getting dull, and you're in need of something new, begin your journey with the dt's newest single, "Refresh," now available on all digital streaming platforms. Welcome to BuzzMusic, the dt's. We love the concept behind your sincere new single, "Refresh." What inspired your duo to create a song about starting fresh? Well, thank you for the love and support on “Refresh”. Dave wrote the song about a falling out we experienced with our previous band. He felt that other people could relate to this experience about having a falling out with somebody you had a close relationship with, but ultimately realizing you are better off without that person. Would you say "Refresh" is one of your duo's more personal songs? What does this song mean to you? For Dave, he feels that this is one of his most honest songs he has written. The songs’ lyrics were written about actual feelings and experiences Dave went through. To Dave, the song is about starting fresh. It can be an arduous and emotional journey, and can be tough to see at times, but once you reach that moment of clarity, you can begin to start a new chapter in your life. For Tom, with playing “Refresh” live, it has really taken on a life of its own as it's a nice change of pace. It’s become a very intimate song for me, along with the audience. It also includes dueling guitar solos in place of the strings, so it's very interactive, lively, and definitely out of the ordinary. How did your duo begin creating "Refresh?" How did you lay the foundation and work your way up during your creative process? The melody of “Refresh” came to Dave during a random day at work. He was humming the melody, and knew he liked what he had come up with, so he stepped away from his desk to make an impromptu voice recording on his phone to not forget. Tom then eventually added the beautiful descending melody that appears as a motif throughout the song. We then started to work on “Refresh” right before the pandemic hit. Once we were able to safely meet in person, we began to pick up where we left off. However, due to a COVID scare, and out of precaution, we again took some time off from getting together. With a lot of time on his hands, Dave decided to get to work on the song to alleviate the workload when we got back together. He laid most of the tracks during this time period including the strings, acoustic guitars, and violin solo. A lot of these tracks were then polished and modified once we were able to safely get together again. For Tom, creating the electric guitar layers and adding harmonies was extremely satisfying once we were able to get together post-quarantine. “Refresh” was challenging and the song took us out of our comfort zone and opened new avenues creatively in a more modern pop lens. The strings and electronic drums were items on “Refresh” that helped us expand on and really help broaden our sonic palette as the dt’s. Fun fact, Tom used his father’s old Rockman Soundbox for the guitar solo, which was created by Tom Scholz from the band Boston in the 1970s. What do you hope to make listeners experience when they hear "Refresh?" Do you hope that your song is part of their journey to renewal? We hope listeners can relate to the paradoxical journey of mourning a relationship in this generation, the never-ending act of refreshing social media pages while stumbling into a new, fresh, optimistic perspective on connection throughout the process. We definitely hope that “Refresh” is part of our listener's journey to a renewal of sorts, whatever that may look to them. Not all paths look the same, but through our music, we hope to connect people, share stories, and reminisce on experiences together. What's next for you? Currently, our plans include just keeping doing what we’re doing: playing shows, making new music, continuing to connect with and inspire others, and having fun. Facebook Instagram
