- Jenny K Shares Her Story In New Single "Self-Destructive"
February 18, 2020 By: Isabella W. Born and raised in New Orleans, Jenny K is a Nashville singer and songwriter who combines aspects of country, pop, and rock into her songs. She identified her desire to create music at a young age when she sang in her bedroom and at family events. Jenny K has always looked up to artists like Taylor Swift, Liz Longley, and Emily Weisband, who use their music to tell stories that their audiences can relate to. She began writing her own original lyrics that reflect her personal experiences and feelings; her new release "Self-Destructive" is a reflection of her own life. "Self-Destructive" has a traditional guitar background accompanied by drums. Jenny K has gentle vocals and she sings in a non-traditional key. She adds dramatic effect after each chorus by ceasing the instrumentals and singing the words, “what can I say, I’m self-destructive”. The main focus of her song lyrics is her self destructive tendencies. She accepts responsibility for a multitude of personal struggles. Jenny K sings about a love interest who hurt her when she let this person into her life. She blames herself for letting this person play with her emotions, hence her “self-destructive” behavior. By singing about her personal experiences, Jenny K's "Self-Destructive" is relatable for her audience, especially those who have encountered similar situations. It is safe to say that Jenny K has achieved her goal of telling a real-life story through her music and we can't wait to hear what's next. Stream "Self-Destructive" here. Welcome to BuzzMusic Jenny K! By telling a story with your music, you make “Self Destructive” a relatable song for your audience. Can you tell us more about the story behind this song? Thanks so much for having me! I actually learned a lot about myself while writing this song. I was talking to this guy for a bit, but I think we both knew it was never going to go anywhere. After a few of those situations, it made me sit back and evaluate myself. I had one of those “Is it me? Am I the problem?” moments. In this case, I had noticed similarities in the types of guys I was falling for in the past and how I just let a lot of things slide. This song was me reflecting on these past experiences and taking responsibility for my part. I was the one who allowed myself to be treated in ways I didn’t want to be treated. While it was cathartic for me to write this song, I decided to release it as a single because I feel like a lot of people go through this at some point. We all want to love and be loved, and sometimes we put our own feelings aside to make it work without realizing it at the moment. This song is for anyone going through that. You have always looked up to artists with honest lyrics including Taylor Swift, Emily Weisband and Liz Longley. Can you elaborate on how these artists influence your music style? First and foremost, Taylor Swift was the reason I learned to play guitar and began writing. She literally had a song for any situation when I needed it most in my own life. It made me want to document my own experiences in the hopes that I’d someday release them for others to hear and relate to like she did for me. All three women’s writing styles have influenced the way I write. They showed me it’s okay to be extremely honest and vulnerable in my writing because that allows people to feel connected to you. With that being said, while all three women’s sounds are different, I feel like my sound is influenced by all three of them. Even though I consider my music mostly country, I think it’s definitely influenced by Taylor Swift’s country/pop, Emily Weisband’s pop, and Liz Longley’s a singer/songwriter sound. We know that your move to Nashville was life-changing; it was what escalated your passion for being an artist. Can you tell us more about how moving to Nashville inspired you to build your musical career? It definitely was! About three years ago, I moved to Nashville not really knowing anyone. I immediately immersed myself in the music industry in any way I could. I interned at a publishing company where I got to hear great songs from multiple writers every day, went to writer’s rounds, got feedback on my songs from those working in the industry, wrote by myself and with others, performed in writer’s rounds and really focused on perfecting my craft. Performing in and attending writer’s rounds definitely influenced me the most. Hearing other songwriters perform their songs is such a special experience no matter their level of experience. Not only do you get to hear the song performed by the person who wrote it, but you also get to hear what inspired it in these smaller, more intimate settings. There’s so much talent in this city everywhere you go that it’s hard to not feel inspired. It definitely pushes me to constantly write songs that I feel passionate enough to release and drives me to learn and grow every day. Your music has a country, pop and rock influences. How did you come about creating this specific style and combination of music? My sound is such an ongoing process and I plan for it to continue to evolve the more I create, but I feel very comfortable and proud of this sound I’ve created with “Self-Destructive.” I had released two songs a couple of years ago that were both a very stereotypical country. I started branching out and discovering artists and genres that I had never really listened to before. I also starting writing with different people who had various influences on their own. After that, I noticed a difference in my own sound when writing and creating by myself. Writing and recording “Self-Destructive” was the first time I really just let myself relax and trust the process instead of trying to make it something I thought it “needed” to be. When I brought it into the studio with my producer, James Lugo, he really gave me a space to explore and bring to life the sound I wanted to express. What can we expect to see from you throughout 2020? I’m so excited for 2020 because I’m looking to play more live shows, and I’m releasing my first full-length project! I have been working on an EP for the past two years or so, and I’m finally finishing it up. “Self-Destructive” is the first single from this project, which I felt was appropriate because it inspired the project as a whole and is also the title track. I wanted to take my time and really put everything into this EP. It consists of five songs that I feel very passionate about because they’re all very personal. It feels like I’m about to release a five-page diary of my life from the past few years. This is both terrifying and exciting, but I’m really looking forward to it. I hope these songs become as special to others as they are to me. instagram.com/hey_itsjennyk twitter.com/hey_itsjennyk facebook.com/Jenny-K-Music-236771146453651 #BuzzMusic
- Young Rob Talks New Single "Got That" and Plans For 2020
February 18, 2020 By: Edwund F. Welcome to BuzzMusic Young Rob! Can you tell us about the music scene in the UK? Thanks for having me well, the UK music scene is in a very good place at the moment with some very amazing artists that are breaking through and making a name for themselves especially on the urban music scene. Who are some of your major influences for your unique sound? I'm quite a versatile artist. My influences come from different artists/genres of music like Hip-Hop, R&B, Afrobeat and other different genres of music. There are moments where I get inspired by different artists like Davido, Burna Boy, Chris Brown,2Pac, Jay-Z, and other great artists alike. What are some of the common themes in your songs, and in what ways does “Got That” differentiate itself from that? Most of the themes in my songs are mainly about love and feel-good vibes. Most people might call it sunshine music. I took "Got That" up a notch by having it strictly for a much more mature 18+ years of age demographic. Due to some of the lyrics. I wrote while maintaining the feel-good vibes to the song. How would you describe your songwriting approach to “Got That” any experiences helped you craft the lyrics to this song? My songwriting process differs from time to time. I could be listening to another artist's song and get inspired by a lyric they said. I sometimes write about things that I've seen happen in my own community or things that I go through personally in my own life. When a producer sends me a beat usually, the vibe that I get from that particular beat will determine the subject matter of that song. What was it like collaborating with Flexx Kapone on “Got That”? How did the idea of collaboration come about and what made you guys go with this concept? Oh man, Flexx and I are both unique artists in our own way. It was cool collaborating with Flexx Kapone on "Got That". My man, Dillon Cash from Los Angeles, California who co-owns Colossal Music Group/Colossal Records hit me up about working with Flexx. I had this track in my music library for a while and I sent it over to Flexx. He killed it with a hot verse and the rest is history! What can we expect to see from you throughout 2020? You're going to see/hear a lot about me this year! Got a few shows lined up and a whole lot of good music and videos on the way. - Chase Tremaine And His Love Affair With Pop-Rock
Okay maybe love affair is a strong term? You'll get what that means the minute you start his new record dubbed "Unfall", freshly released and bursting with pop-rock brightness, and driven by emotion and life experience. Taking his ability to create some intricate guitar riffs and making them sound smooth and flowy, the record comes through mature and catchy. "Search For Myself" being at the top of the fun pop-rock list, the track keeps it's edginess as little touches of darkness peak through. Other songs like "Humanizer" give the essence of Elvis Costello and an early 2000's pop-punk feel yet somehow doesn't stray from the overall embodiment the album instills. Meanwhile "Council (The Help I Get)", is a pure alternative rock at it's best. At first glance, there is a lot going on with this record but as you rock through these songs it feels like a concept album. And if you listen to the songs, you can hear how relatable they are to being alive. - Toronto Artist Avery Raquel Climbs the Charts With “Pieces”
Welcome to BuzzMusic, Avery Raquel! Living in Toronto, in what ways has your environment inspired you, and how have you applied it to your musical career? Thanks very much, glad to be here! A lot of my songwriting stems from personal experiences; relationships, friends, things that have happened to me, but they have never really been influenced by location. I grew up in a pretty small town. I just recently started my first year at college and started living on my own in Toronto. It's a big change, but I love Toronto. I admit, I'm becoming more introspective and thinking about living on my own, and meeting new people, and I guess that will have some effect on my writing. I’ve been really taking in my new surroundings and constantly trying to find inspiration. You continue to climb the dance charts with the StoneBridge remix of ’Pieces’, the second single release from your album, ’My Heart Away’. Tell us about this journey! The album focuses on the evolution of a relationship. ’Pieces’ is towards the end of the album and is the most upbeat and mainstream sounding song on it. My producer, Greg (Kavanagh) had the initial idea about doing a club remix of “Pieces". I like to think I’m open to trying new things, but when the StoneBridge opportunity first arose, I did need some time to think about it. I don't think I was ready at that time to hear my music presented so differently. But then I noticed a lot of mainstream artists creating remixes to further build their fan base and expose their music to a wider audience, so I thought, why not? Now's the time. StoneBridge is at the top of his game and has multiple Billboard hits with artists like P!nk, Ariana Grande, and many others, so we all knew he was the perfect fit. I am very happy with how the remixes turned out and how well “Pieces” is doing with DJ’s on both radio and in the clubs. I am still blown away by the charting position. I am sitting at #30 right now! What inspired you to write ’Pieces’? The emotion came from being at the end of a relationship that had gone bad. The main message of this song is that sometimes you put out a lot of energy towards someone else to please them and to try to remind yourself that you are happy in the situation that you are in, but that energy isn’t always reciprocal and can be taken for granted by that other person. If you feel the need to remind yourself to be happy, then the relationship is toxic. ”Sometimes the pieces aren't meant to fit” - Two people, though maybe in love, may not be right for each other, and the realization that it's okay. What can we expect to see from you throughout 2020? I hope to write a lot more and to release new music. Not sure if I'll work towards a full album, or simply release a few singles. I already have 4-5 songs in the bag. I would also like to perform more! Maybe do some small tours in Canada and the United States. I'm starting to book for Spring and Summer 2020, and even into 2021. - Ram Hoss Digs In With His Raw Unfiltered Acoustic Jams
February 17, 2020 Ram Hoss just dropped his "Ariana Grande" single and it's uncontrollable fun. The track busts straight in with attitude and gusto. Upswing and invasively addicting, Hoss has an energy that's hard to beat. A flow as smooth as butter and growing intensity, there is no holding back with this song and the same goes for the B-Side dubbed "Jungle Fever". Both are ferocious, slightly comedic, and just a pure good time. Upon listening to these songs, you really ponder what a live performance would be like. Look out for more from Ram Hoss! - GelaX Stun Us with Their Eclectic Binding of Sounds in 2019!
Originating from Toronto, CA, we introduce GelaX, a multi-dimensional band. GelaX is the type of band you can't possibly describe in one word. They're too complex to fit into the category of one thing, and so we ultimately describe the bands sounding as hypnotic, dark, and expressive. GelaX focuses on providing vivid imagery for listeners following along to their sound. Personally, we listened and explored through the experience their music has to offer. It was a striking and colorful event. We were hooked onto their sound once listening, and so it feels only appropriate to take a look at past tracks released in 2019. Released musical expressions from GelaX in 2019 include "Life", "Crazy Arms", and our personal favorite, "Mr. Sqaure". "Mr. Square" takes on a sultry and alluring appeal in order to attract listeners' full attention. The song expresses the vices of a man, and blends together dark, ethereal synths to create that dramatic vocal effect. "Mr. Square" has a melody that is held almost consistent throughout the song, and it's pretty trippy. The kind of trippy that makes you focused in on the song, and what it has to offer. The effect feels almost hypnotic, and we essentially felt linked with GelaX, especially regarding the vocal performance throughout the track. It was easy to focus on the voice, the instrumentals blended in, and ultimately the message GelaX was communicating. We know that they're planning on releasing new music in 2020, and so we're intrigued to see where they'll take their sound from here. Give a listen to "Mr. Sqaure" here. Welcome, GelaX! It's great to be able to feature you here on BuzzMusic! Tell us how you feel about your artistic journey throughout 2019? How do you think the challenges you've faced throughout 2019 has shaped the success of the band so far? Hello and thanks once again for including us. 2019 has truly been a busy year in our development, with 3 singles released, plenty of shows throughout the Toronto indie scene and around Ontario, good reactions for our "Life" music video, our first college radios spins, great features by music zines and sites for our "Crazy Arms" and "Life" singles, and a very honoring mention by Adam Carter from CBC music as one of the bands to look out for from Ontario. All of this has helped us sculpt a better plan and outlook on how to go forward with 2020, learning from our mistakes and what worked to fine-tune our approach. As we know, music, and what used to be constrained to a certain "genre" has been broken down, and genres are less confined to a certain sounding nowadays. The overall sound of GelaX is quite dynamic. What are some genre elements GelaX couldn't create without? That's quite true. Genres are blending more and more, which is great for GelaX as we never actually defined our sound like one specific genre. We draw inspiration from a lot of electro-rock, proggy sounds, and the unconventional writings of Trip Hop with a healthy dose of the harder side of indie rock. The sky is the limit and it fuels our inspiration. How did it feel to work through the music video of "Mr. Square"? Did the vision for the video come naturally, or was it a process you had to intricately walk through together? Kind of a combination of both. So the first idea for it came to our singer's head stemming from her many interactions with "certain" types of men, which of course is related to the lyrics. but since the project is totally DIY and her second video to make with self-editing ( after "Life"), lots of factors affect the direction of it, and we end up improvising the details of it as we go through it, based on budget, space, and ability to shoot it with what we have. It'll definitely be a bigger step from her first video. Look out for it once it's completed in late January 2020. We've heard that you're coming planning a tour in 2020! That's very exciting! How do you all feel about touring and performing to your listeners? Very curious and excited to see how they'd react to our newer sounds and approach. We're working on trying to combine our mystery fantasy elements sonically, with a visual dimension to enhance the trip. We want you to leave with an experience that's both entertaining and thought-provoking. Either we'll pull it off, or fail miserably haha. What are some integral sounds that set GelaX apart from other eclectic bands in this new age of music? Our constant search for unique and new ways to use our instruments, chord arrangements, and subject matter. We love the unexpected as well as the familiar. But we easily get bored out of our own formulas, which pushes us to experiment on a regular basis. It was a treat to have you on BuzzMusic to talk about recent releases of the band! Thanks again for taking the time! Where's GelaX bound to go from here, aside from the tour? The pleasure was ours, thanks for having us :) I think 2020 will be full of surprises. For sure an album, but that's all we'll say for now. We gotta keep some mystery, right? Instagram Twitter Facebook #BuzzMusic
- Get Ready to Be Fiercely Energetic with the Collective Soundings of The Coolers!
We might have come across this independent Los Angeles rock band The Coolers that are absolutely killing the music game. Considering they're still in their transforming stage in terms of the listening base, they're clearly displaying their limitless potential with what the band has released in 2019. One particular track that should gain the interest of many is "Where the Fish Live". Our reasoning? It's such a strikingly intense track that showcases both the crazy vocal dynamics, as well as the integration of forceful guitar riffs. "Where the Fish Live" is the track that will definitely have your blood rushing, heart-pounding, and mind racing. The Coolers' natural stage presence that completely fills any type of silence is amicable--they feed our growing curiosity on how they cultivated such a sounding. Another notable 2019 track is "Face Turns Blue". The instrumentals for this track are completely contrasting from "Where the Fish Live". The Coolers use "Face Turns Blue" as a moment to highlight their laidback and rustic styling. With an apathetic approach to vocal execution, The Coolers grew "Face Turns Blue" to be a track that draws your attention in entirely. We also caught a few hints of sultry elements, which definitely stimulated our senses completely. The last track, the climax to the sounding of The Coolers, is "Birthday in Bed". If you thought "Where the Fish Live" was intense, you're in for another harsher ride with "Birthday in Bed". The song offers more raw attributes, which allowed for more of an unstructured and free production. You can already expect this track to be lively all throughout and maintaining a hardcore ambiance. The lesson learned here with The Coolers is to not underestimate an undiscovered band, that's for sure! Get crazy with the music stylings of The Coolers here. Welcome to BuzzMusic The Coolers! We have to say, once we went over your music history, we've been hooked ever since. What were some of your favorite soundings of The Coolers over 2019? Thanks for having us back, and such an honor to be included on your “Best of 2019” Top 10! We’ve been on, let’s say, a band growth journey since the release of our first EP, Troglodyte. Since its release, we’ve been offered some great opportunities, especially on the live show side of things. We’ve played all over LA from the Whisky a Go-Go, Viper Room to The Canyon Club and we’ve had some radio play. A lot of great stuff, and more to come. And in terms of band growth, our original bassist left the band to pursue other creative interests, which we totally support him on. That definitely lit a fire under our asses to find a new bassist. We didn’t want to lose the momentum of playing live, so we settled as a trio with Sadie taking over the bass for a few shows. It’s not easy finding the right person to join your band. But, we did it! We’re very lucky to have Sam Peterson (formerly of the New Jersey band Last Try) join us officially as our new bass player. He’s such a perfect fit for our group and sound. All around rad dude! Residing in Los Angeles, CA, do you tend to find major inspiration from the ever-growing music scene? The LA music scene is a beast of its own. We’re still finding our footing within the large LA music scene. There are so many genres and sub-genres of music these days, and a lot of venues cater specifically to whatever that music genre maybe or “scene”. We’ve crossed paths with other bands that we really dig, and have made some good friends within that circle. Which we guess can be inspiring when you’re still finding your footing. We’re happy to see a lot of brick-and-mortars cater to the live music industry too. There are truly only a few newcomer rock bands nowadays that can perfect the cultivation of authentic rock sounds, and so it's refreshing to listen to your sound. Thank you! That seriously means a lot to us. It was our initial goal when releasing Troglodyte to make a record that came as close as we could to sound like the records we grew up listening to. We’re lovers of music and all variations of rock. We are really inspired by rock bands, like MC5, Pink Floyd, The Breeders, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, and The Pixies, to name a few, that paved the way for rockers like us. We’re happy to hear we succeeded in bringing that authentic rock sound. Did you come across any predominant artistic challenges in 2019? How does the band typically remedy through any creative blocks and/or clashes? Like any other band, we definitely did have some artistic challenges in 2019, especially when we became a three-piece for a (thankfully) short stint. Honestly, having a band is like being in a marriage. You have to know when to pick your battles and when to compromise. We all have strong personalities. The more we play together and hang out as a band, we’ve become much closer as friends and creative collaborators. Creating music and sharing your songs with your peers is probably one of the most vulnerable positions to be in. Our end goal is always the betterment of the band, perfecting our sound and music, and just having fun. The Coolers remedy for artistic challenges – crack open a beer, pour some whiskey and let’s talk. "Face Turns Blue" was undoubtedly one of our favorite tracks from the band. How did it feel to record a track that's contrasting from the intense energy your songs normally emulate? It’s a different vibe for sure from the other harder-rocking tracks. “Face Turns Blue” was the last song we had recorded, really last minute. Leslie originally brought this song in, really written to be played acoustically, and Sergio and Sadie helped arrange it to be a little…louder. We went for that ballad-Motown sound. It was fun to play with the different dynamics of the track so that it makes the listener really dive in and hear all of our nuances. We recorded the EP reel-to-reel, so ideally, if this EP and this song specifically were printed on vinyl, it would sound sexy, for sure. We appreciate the band taking the time to talk with us about 2019! Of course, we know that the quality sound is there, and so what is The Coolers plan for 2020 regarding the band's growth? Hey, you’re welcome! And thanks for having us back. We love what BuzzMusic does for indie artists. We have big plans for 2020. We’re gearing up to record a full-length album. We have a lot of new songs. We’ve really developed and honed our sound this year, and are really excited to get back in the studio. We also hope to get on the road for a mini-tour of some kind. Plus, we have our eyes on playing larger venues and getting festival gigs. We’re excited for what’s to come and will definitely keep BuzzMusic posted on all fronts! Until then, for those reading this interview, go out to a show and support local music and your friend's band. Your life will be better for it. Instagram Facebook #BuzzMusic
- Rap/Hip-Hop Artist Big Badd Wolf Had an Honest & Quality 2019
Recording artist Big Badd Wolf has been releasing some attention-worthy tracks this past 2019! As a North Texas native, Big Badd Wolf makes music that is true to himself and his beliefs. Artistically, Big Badd Wolf knows the impact of music, and how he plays a role in delivering such an impact on listeners. The power of music is true and therefor Big Badd Wolf (as it is for any music lover), and so his understanding and resonating so well with this aspect of music has aided in his overall execution of his own. Big Badd Wolf has been putting his vision and genuine outlook into tracks released throughout 2019. Some notable tracks have been “Cry Wolf”, as well as “Conservations”. “Cry Wolf” begins with an interesting dynamic. It has that pristine Hip/Hop or even Rap production, which is easily complemented by the integration of verses from Big Badd Wolf. “Cry Wolf” introduces us to the very elemental features of Big Badd Wolf, while his most recently released track” Conversations” exploits that laxer and trill side of his music. We really want to dive deep into “Conversations” because the ambiance and general vibe the track allows and actually insists, is incredible. Big Badd Wolf shows us that he’s a versatile artist through the contrast regarding his two 2019 single releases. We know that he’s an artist able to bring fire soundings to the table, soundings that resonate so similarity with those from Travis Scott. We see these Travis Scott aspects embedded within “Conversations” with the atmospheric elements on the production side being that huge characteristic of the sound. All in all, we’re impressed with the small, but insanely quality tracklist of Big Badd Wolf this year, and we’re so intrigued to see how it is that Big Badd Wolf can elevate this exact sounding for 2020. Check out the soundings of Big Badd Wolf here Hey Big Badd Wolf! We’re excited to talk over your tracks released this year! How do you feel now that 2019 is almost over?! I feel excited! I took this year to really focus on who I am as an artist, and what kind of music I wanted to start my journey with. 2019 was the year of growth, and 2020 will be the year to show off what I've been working towards. Although “Cry Wolf” has gained significant traction when compared to “Conversations”, which track would you offer to a first-time listener? I'd definitely recommend "Cry Wolf"! There's a reason I released it first, and that it's the first track on the album. It's a great intro to the world of Big Badd. "Conversations" is more of an intimate, and slow vibe for someone looking to get to know me more deeply. We know that you implement a sense of realness to your sound and overall music. Can you walk us through the importance of a genuine and honest track, and how you go about creating a track that is, in essence, “honest”? Without necessarily talking about myself, I believe the honesty comes from the existence of the real artist, and the insatiable desire to explore, and express the vast spectrum of emotions through all mediums. The realness in art is very important because when you really feel something when experiencing a form of art, that comes from that artist's ability to convey that genuine emotion. The creation of such work is done by the artist being able to let that vulnerability out. ... I rant 📷 “Conversations” was much more chill compared to “Cry Wolf”, although “Cry Wolf” maintained that necessary vigor and constant flow of energy! How did the songs compare to you, personally? The songs are vastly different, and that's exactly why I chose them to be the first two releases of my upcoming album "Careless Whispers". "Cry Wolf" is the big opening act that lets listeners know what they're in for, while "Conversations" is a tinder, honest look at my romantic side. It was really great being able to talk through your soundings of 2019! Do you see more music being released from yourself in 2020?! Absolutely! I have a third single that will be released on a full moon early 2020, & soon after that will be the official release of my debut album "Careless Whispers"! I have some other projects in early works as well, so stay tuned! - Indigo Haze Creatively Expresses Their Observations of the World Through Infectious Melodies
Song-writing maturity creates a rare blend of personal vulnerability and audience relatability, coupled with the ability to produce catchy pop songs with cutting guitar tones and powerful beats, make Indigo Haze a band capable of capturing the hearts and imagination of anyone that comes across their music. Indigo Haze is obviously not a band that you won’t come across on the regular. They have a unique and unorthodox way of creating their music inspired by the outside world that they live in. A fascination with the way people live in the modern world results in intricate songs detailing personal observations of contemporary culture. Their songwriting stems from the examinations of multiple areas of our living. This is what makes them highly attractive and non-comparable. The indie-pop quartet’s latest release, Lana, explores the naivety of modern love, questioning whether people can fall in love too easily or in fact trick themselves into believing they’re in love to fill an internal emptiness. Indigo Haze has this special effect that will impact the general public of indie lovers in a positive way they have never been impacted before. We found ourselves in awe with Indigo Haze’s authenticity that will translate through their canorous music. Listen to Indigo Haze here. Welcome to BuzzMusic Indigo Haze! You guys have a pretty interesting stage name. Tell us about the story behind this name and what it represents for you? When we first got together and started making music we didn’t really think of any band names, it was only once we started gigging we suddenly thought “oh, we actually need a name”. The name Indigo Haze was just the result of us chucking a few ideas around, there’s no particular meaning behind the name itself but it has come to mean something to us all personally as it’s what represents us as a group of mates making music together. How would you describe your songwriting approach to certain releases like “Lana”? Most songs we’ve written have had different writing processes really, we haven’t found one way of working that’s better than any other way, it’s really just a matter of finding the best way for each song to be brought to life. Lana was written by Tom (vocals/guitar) and Sam (vocals/drums) shutting themselves in Sam’s bedroom for a few evenings and just playing around with a few new sounds and rhythms that we hadn’t used before to create the basis for the track, then Matt (guitar) and Will (bass) added a few finishing touches. Most of our songs are written in rehearsals with the whole band though, someone will bring a riff or a bassline or a beat they’ve come up with and we’ll play around with that – 95% of the time we all write our own parts which are nice as it means we have a sound that’s truly reflective of everyone’s playing styles and allows all of us to pull our weight creatively, but every now and then someone will have such a clear idea of how they want a certain song to sound that you have to follow their lead! What’s the most challenging aspect of creating “Lana” for you and in what ways do you guys manage to overcome the obstacles? We rarely face any challenges creatively as we’re all creative people and good musicians, so it’s easy for us to get ideas flowing. The only challenge we regularly face is down to each band member having such contrasting influences and so there’s been a few heated discussions as to which direction we want to take a song in and how we want each part to sound. We genuinely all just want every song to sound as good as possible though, so although we all want the same outcome, the only real challenge is finding a balance between all the different ideas on how to get there. Let’s talk more about your music in-depth. Your release of the single titled “Lana” has been receiving great success. How would you detail the arrangements in this record and in what ways were you able to emotionally connect with this song? Lana is definitely more synth-heavy than anything we’d done before, purely because it generated the right atmosphere and we wanted to write something a bit different and really push ourselves as songwriters. It’s a fairly steady song, rhythmically it’s very nonchalant with bits of guitar and backing vocals left floating in the spaces. We realized the vocals needed to be the focal point of the track as that particular vocal performance had a certain uniqueness to it that we really wanted exploit. In terms of an emotional connection to the song, the point is that it really can be interpreted differently by anyone who listens to it. The song is about the naivety of young love, and how people are willing to use others and lead people on to get what they want – it’s something that everyone will either have experienced themselves or at least have a friend that’s experienced it, and that experience could come from either side of the story. On an emotional level, the song really tries to explore both sides of that story so that anyone can put themselves into the narrative from their own perspective. “In what ways does “Lana” differentiate from your other releases “ Glass House” and “Lost Love”? The use of synths/pads is a lot more prominent in Lana, and the use of the dual-vocals is something we’d never done before. The main difference with Lana is that it’s just a lot more polished and produced compared to our other tracks which are perhaps a bit rawer. We’re definitely more of a live band and love the energy we’re able to bring to our gigs, so for us now it’s important to try and find a way of translating that energy into our recorded music. What’s next for you Indigo Haze? We’re still figuring that out, to be honest! We definitely want to release more music and play more shows, and defining our genre and sound is high on the to-do list as all of our releases do have nuances that we want to try and bring together to create a more unique vibe for our audience. facebook.com/indigohazeofficial instagram.com/indigohazeofficial #BuzzMusic
- Artist Spotlight: Caliban Strange & Their New Track “Cesium Time”
Getting right into their soundings releases in 2019, we come across Caliban Strange’s “Cesium Time”. The track features a variety of elements that once wrapped up together, produce that authentic styling exclusive to Caliban Strange. The pace of the “Cesium Time” is an interesting aspect to the track—it quickly contrasted right from the start, but actually aided in the unique styling of their production. The vocal delivery is slower and incorporates almost a melancholic element within. However, the actual product itself is a bit more fast-paced than what the vocal offerings bring, and so the product that is “Cesium Time” is quite intriguing, to say the least! The band has released a music video for the track, debuting in late November, which is an incredibly retro-take on an imaginative story of the track. Caliban Strange has collectively made a potent sound that mellows listeners out completely, and this is the element of contrast within one's music that is completely appropriate! Although we highlight “Cesium Time”, the band has released in total 3 tracks in 2019, with an EP pending. We’re so intrigued to see how the EP executes because their sound was so distinctive from the start that we can imagine that aspect gets further translated in a collective EP! For now, we’re focusing on the bands current sound, like “Cesium Time”, and we’re content. We hope to see the band progress even further in 2020, and that they receive the necessary attention from indie/alternative music fans! Caliban Strange is available on Spotify, and we highly suggest you check out the previously mentioned video for “Cesium Time” as it’s definitely one you haven’t seen before! Discover Caliban Strange here. Hi Caliban Strange! We’re grateful to feature songs like “Cesium Time” here at BuzzMusic! Since the release of the song is still so recent, how have you found the current traction for the track in the last couple of weeks it’s been out for? Cesium Time is a very recent release and has only been heard by a select audience. Time is measured by the vibrations of the Cesium atom in an atomic clock, and so we are being very deliberate in the release timing. We will be releasing 11 notes at 11:11 every day until the song is done. We have found that 100% of our trial audience has given the song rave reviews! “wow, I like cesium” – Doug H, professional sound engineer “Awesome video! Love the special effects with the freight train as well as the street shots in fast forward. I like the studio shots as well; I assume that is Ron's studio. I can't get enough of the lead guitar (Roland did a great job)! Seriously, you guys should submit this one to CBC for their playlist. IMO, it is perfect for their weekly Indie show “– Eric F, Guitar player, and music fan Is there a pinnacle sounding to what makes the band Caliban Strange? A baby is born, and travels through space and time, creating a dialog with the universe. Words pop into our heads, and we let them bounce off the walls of the vacuum jar that is our physical reality. Words create an image, and notes bend around a central theme. We have a mission to be irreverent, intellectual, and thought-provoking. It always starts with a story. Everything we write, words, music, tempo, are all designed to support that story. We craft words, beats, notes, and surprises on the running driving beat of our musical canvas. The best parts stick to the gooey center and make a tasty childish treat. We incorporate insights from science, history, literature, and visual arts. We play all of our sounds, but we also play well with others. We invent new instruments. The music video for “Cesium Time” was incredibly retrograde. Where was the band's inspiration stemming from in order to curate this video? We live in a retro-industrial town, where the industry of the past is decaying all around us. Factories are turning into condos; startups are picking through the bones of the glory days of the industry. We are part of a proud community of the K-Dub sound, which is punching far above its weight on the national and international music scene. We are a band that started more than 30 years ago in the 80s, so retro is in our blood. 2020 is our 11:11 breakout year, where our resonance will transcend into the rest of the universe. The video is an attempt to capture the feeling of fleeting time, always moving, sometimes in multiple directions. Sometimes there are gaps. We are time traveling tourists. The studio shots have retro film filters… an homage to our roots, when the film was the only medium for videos, and the internet was made of newsprint. The video is an impressionist view of time, to the click-tock driving pop beat that winds through all that is yours… and all that is mine. Your EP is currently pending! How much longer until fans can expect the official release?! We are getting the images together right now… all the music is complete and perfect. The release will happen very close to the end of this year! Happy Holidays! We hope to have Caliban Strange back on BuzzMusic in the near future! We’re excited to see the direction of the band, as the potential is most definitely there. Where do you all see Caliban Strange taking off to next? The internet is like the night sky. Since the dawn of time, people have been searching the heavens for answers, patterns, and meaning. Like a super bright supernova, we plan to illuminate our special section of the sky. The internet is like the night sky, where people search through infinity to find a glowing orb that speaks to them. We are that beautiful particle and light. We imagine an alien reality and translate their songs for the Earth Monkeys. We have like, a zillion songs written and ready to perfect into our audio magic. We have many art and multimedia projects, from the painting farm, art-audio projects, toys, mind projectors, solar-powered rocks, and alien radio stations supported by our alien e-currency Zircon. We are an insignificant planet, orbiting an insignificant star, inhabited by partially evolved monkeys attempting to understand the universe. Our music may be the only way to achieve relevance and connect to the music of the spheres. twitter.com/CalibanStrange facebook.com/bandlaunch.ca instagram.com/hofer.roland calibanstrange.com #BuzzMusic
