- BuzzMusic Artist of the Day: Hip Hop Blender Femi Releases a Multitude of Tracks Throughout 2019
Nigerian-Canadian artist Femi is making waves in the current Hip Hop and Rap environment we're presented with today. Femi believes he has artistic attributes that the world hasn't seen from any other artist yet, and he's more than ready to share these features through his music! Femi's "ICY" has an underground, dark and mystic feel to its initial intro to the production. Then, Femi's vocal integration breaks the dark ambiance and creates more of a psychedelic beat. He advances his sound by adding in some sly and catchy verses, which caught our attention almost right away. Once our attention was caught, we were completely drawn in and hypnotized by the lyrical outflow. Then, Femi brought in an eclectic moment of production where the entire beat and vocal delivery switches up, providing the ultimate climax for "ICY". As for 2019 soundings, Femi has released tracks such as "Doubt?", "Greezy" and "No Pressure", which all offer up the same type of environment we were gifted with during "ICY". It's within these singles that the contrast of Femi's sound shines through. He's able to successfully integrate both harsh and soft vocal soundings, which gives for the most fitting contrast in a Hip Hop and Rap track. We believe that the Hip/Hop community is completely ready for what Femi has to bring in this stage of the era, and we're personally ready for more to come from Femi! Listen to the track releases of Femi here. Hey there, Femi! Congratulations on a successful 2019! This past year has seen many releases from you. How do you feel looking back at the number of tracks you came out with, and the amount of work you put into them? Looking back on it now, 2019 has been pretty crazy with the amount of tracks I came out with and the ones I’ve been featured on. Creating Channel 2 was a super long but fun process for me. It was the first time I really put together a full body of work and was content with just listening to it myself. I found joy in the process of creating it and so I wasn’t too attached to the outcome of the project. The features i did this year were also part of that for me. I was offered bags by a couple people to jump on tracks with them but the ones I ended up doing I didn’t make any money off of. The sound of the music was just so important to me that I only worked with other artists that make music I vibe with. I think that my philosophy when it comes to working on tracks will eventually lead to success because I believe putting the music first will always lead to a bag in the future. Out of the various places you've lived as an artist, what area stimulated your creative process the most? I think that I really started getting into music when I moved to Calgary in grade 11, simply because I would take the train from one end of the city to the other twice a day everyday. That gave me a lot of time to really analyze and listen to albums in their entirety. Before that, I would listen to singles here and there or start listening to and album and most likely never get to the end of it. By the time I was headed off to University, I had a pretty thorough understanding of what I liked and didn’t like. For the first like a year or two in St. John’s Newfoundland, I really didn’t like the place because I didn’t have much to do and didn't really vibe with the people all that much so I spent a lot of time listening and analyzing my favorite artists and their work. So I would say Calgary and St.Johns were the places that stimulated my creative process the most. We really resonated with your track "ICY". The beat was addicting, and your vocal blend was enthralling. How did you feel about the production of this particular track? Who was involved in making the production execute in the way it did? ICY was the first track I ever released. Produced by Ben Noseworthy from Ne1 beats, Icy was probably the first time I heard a beat and had lyrics come to me instantly. I think I wrote that song in about an hour because the beat hit me in a way I had never felt before. I put down a reference track, sent it to Ben and Eddy, they loved it and wanted to get it sounding as professional as possible. So we rented a mic went to Bens basement and created it the next day. To this day it continues to be my highest streamed tracks and I don’t think it because it the best we’ve ever made but because it was the first time people heard from me and the quality of it really surprised them. As an artist who has a shortlist of inspirations, do you incorporate the elements of the artists you personally look up to within your own music and sound? I definitely incorporate elements from all the artists I’m inspired by but I always want to keep my orginallity with that. I’m inspired by the different dimensions of an artist. From the songwriting of Ed Sheeran and Drake, the production behind Travis Scott, the combination of rapping and melody from acts like Tory Lanez, Anders, Johnny Yukon and the emotion and vocals in acts like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and the Weeknd. I try to incorporate those dimensions in my music and add my own spin on them. Originality is key to me, the ability to add your own sauce to a track I think is what makes an artist unique. I can even sometimes hear an artist who’s sold a track to another and it inspires me to stay unapologetically me. Is there any goal/action you want to complete within early 2020 as an artist, or are you planning on taking a break from the music world as we venture into the New Year? I have a couple of goals for 2020. This year I’m putting all my time into building my brand as an artist and my business brand ITB Inc. I’ve moved back to Calgary now to really start networking and get my music in front of the right audience. I want to touch at least a 100,000 streams on Spotify and iTunes and double my following on Instagram. I'm committed to producing more content and getting in front of more eyes because I know my work is great I just need more attention. Establishing my presence in Calgary is my primary goal in 2020 and hopefully making the move and taking the support I’ve grown here to Toronto in 2021. It was really great to take the time to talk about your music, Femi! Are you planning on performing at any live shows in the next few months? I was able to touch the stage recently this December on the 27th with one of Calgary’s well-known artist’s Dozie. I had a great time and plan on doing a lot more shows especially with the release of my upcoming EP "Between Channels” and my next project "Channel 3". I don’t currently have a lot of shows planned for this year but I’ve got an open schedule and a hunger to work. instagram.com/thatoneyute #BuzzMusic

Tell us about your upbringing! Where did you grow up? How did you discover your love for music? Hi, thank you :) I grew up in Paris, went to the American School, my mother is a sculptor, my dad a businessman who also plays guitar, writes songs and sang to me every night. I grew up in a very eclectic environment, my mother grew up in South America, sings in Spanish, loves to dance, and my father who comes from North Africa and worked so hard all his life comes alive whenever he picks up his guitar and sings his life through his songs. My aunt also worked in music, discovering bands and developing them. Love for music was always around, was always a part of me. I studied piano at the Russian Conservatory for ten years, took singing lessons, did a few musicals... Later moved to LA to pursue my passion. What was the most challenging aspect of creating “Summer Of Love” and why? Making the journey smooth, reminding the listener of past loves, flings, and relationships, keeping it bare and raw without making it boring. I’m telling a nostalgic story but the relationship was actually toxic so I had to set aside all the bad emotions, to tell the story. We made the song grow slowly until the climax at the end, where it all comes together and is just an explosion of beauty and memories... What was your personal favorite element to “Summer Of Love”? The soft beginning, the dreamy piano, strong bass, and my absolute favorite element is the backup vocals. We recorded three gospel singers old school, in the same room. It was so powerful and moving, it added so much life and depth to the track. How would you describe your songwriting approach to “Summer Of Love” and the meaning behind this song? I found the two first chords, it felt right, I wanted a 7th in there to make the sound more dreamy, once I decided on the chords the lyrics just came out. The story develops in the verses as it usually does, I wanted the song to feel melancholic and sweet, with some passion and pain...Because of thats life.. The song is about lost love and explores, the memories of those small moments that define summer flings. What inspired you to write “Summer Of Love”? I watched a French movie with Vincent Cassel called “ My King”, it’s about a codependent toxic relationship, I went to bed feeling a bit overwhelmed and anxious, but woke up to write the lyrics of “Summer of love” in one go. The movie reminded me of my first love story and I felt compelled to write a sweet yet very sour and complicated romance... What is next for you Lou Ella? New music, live shows, a music video, a huge showcase in March, and a collaboration with an amazing band called The Swoons that I can’t wait to record, new merchandise... 2020 is going to be crazy!!!! instagram.com/loucloudsound #BuzzMusic
- BuzzMusic Breakout Band: THE HOLY WOW Recap Their 2019
Photo by Anna Azarov Photography The name is as attention-grabbing as the style, and the delivery is as explosive as the music! THE HOLY WOW has been serving us an adrenaline shot of gothic electro garage rock. This is all filtered through the deeply personal lens of Russian born, New York raised, California grown Dmitry Wild. Dmitry has a strong diverse background that shines through to his intricate and detailed music. Dmitry Wild found an outlet by playing music and quickly developed a prodigious list of bands to collaborate with by his late teens. This experience collaborating with bands served beneficial for Dmitry early on. However, it wasn’t until the unfortunate passing of his father where he delved right into his music as a solo artist and shelved his collaborative projects. Photo by Anna Azarov Photography The official THE HOLY WOW Debut album, “Modern Ancient Man”, came out January 18th and boasts an impressive collection of philosophically rich, romantic songs, built on electric back-beats and distorted melodic guitar instrumentals! This album falls in line with the work of the Cramps, Jesus and Mary Chain as well as a few modern rockers. THE HOLY WOW keeps the ball rolling with their latest music video "Hey Dragon" featuring Mekia Machine. The music video put a cool spin on the song and brought out the personality of THE HOLY WOW. 2019 has been a spectacular year for THE HOLY WOW, the recent recording of their new single “Dilemma” which speaks about the process every artist has to go through. When you don’t make money doing what you love but instead having to go to work and make money doing something you are not passionate about. THE HOLY WOW is way on his way to great heights of success and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s next from them! Listen to THE HOLY WOW here. Welcome back to BuzzMusic THE HOLY WOW! Tell us, what inspired your name? One time I was walking around Union Square in San Francisco, California and I met a street seller who was selling everything with a WOW in it, sculptures large and small and even pendants, so I asked him why Wow? And he said, one time I got so stoned I ended up in the Universe and there all I heard was WOW constant and long Wow… so I just stood there and smiled. That’s what I said every time something moved me. So I said, “WOW” but then I found out there was already a few musical projects with WOW so I thought what’s bigger than WOW and that is HOLY WOW! Ha! So yeah there you have it, but also you can look at it from another angle, WOW is the most commercialized word and an expression of wonder, I see it everywhere now, on products, and billboards, so it’s sort of POP status now, and HOLY is something sacred and spiritual like a HOLY MAN, has no connotations to Christianity, there are Holy Men in India and everywhere. Anyways, so you take a POP word and a sacred word and get you a hint at the style of music, we keep commercialism nearby while our content/song lyrics are sacred. What were some of the challenges you faced when breaking through as a solo artist? It was challenging, because who else do you have to give you feedback. I mean in the band you have your band members, but when you decide to go off on your own you are in the vacuum of your own creation, whether it’s good or not, you are clueless, but you still keep moving forward blindly believing it’s good. I can do this. People will dig it. How would you describe the creative process behind your single “Dilemma”? Well Dilemma we already wrote as a band, or more like I had an idea for a riff and a chorus, and I came to the studio and showed it to the guys, just the intro riff, and then Pete laid down this spacey synth, and the band just took it and ran with it. When I had to sing something, I looked in my phone and there it was. I always write lyrics, on the road, on the go, always jotting down ideas, only now luckily, we have a phone to carry all our madness. I wrote some painful things about being an artist and a musician and having to go to work, so I just started yelling in the microphone without a guitar, and then the chorus came at the right time and we all kicked into gear together. The bridge, we had Gary French (bass) develop it, he is the bridge man, I only write verses and choruses, he comes and says we need a good bridge, so we sat on it for a while and didn’t have the bridge, and then he came in one time and said I think I got it. We tried his chords and Jorge Vega the drummer, doesn’t need much to get creative, so we all fell into the loud breakdown bridge part and then it all grew together. What was your personal favorite element to the video “Hey Dragon” and why? In the music video for “Hey Dragon”, it was our attempt to capture the moment we are all living through right now. When Trump was elected everyone walked out on the streets, protesting. It was the most beautiful thing to be part of that, then Pro Earth protest, Climate Change protest, then Women’s march to DC. In Russia, for example, there was only 1 protest and army arrested something like 1300 people in one night, they never had another protest again. It’s against the law. Here you can protest and express your disagreement with the system, with the president or whatever you dislike. In that video, we tried to inject the protest scenes to stand by the RESIST movement as the basis of human expression. It’s important to RESIST to show we don’t agree where our leaders take us because we all know our ego lives under the ground, in the HADES you might say, the LORD or Chaos is waiting for all of us to fuck up so we can destroy ourselves, so I say: “Wait we are trying to get it together. Let’s realize every day is a thrill and a present. Let’s cherish it and not let bigots control and manipulate our present.” Also, I invited my good friend, Mekia Machine to sing with me, because first of all, she is an amazing singer and also me and her stand for unity between cultures and races, saying loud that racism is over and we will stand united for each other and with each other, no matter where we come from. Ying Yang sort of speak. I love that girl, big shout out to her. She is a great musician in her own right and has a powerful church like voice. Check out her on Spotify I also recorded guitar on her 2 songs, “Keep on Standing” and “Say My Name”. How would you describe your songwriting approach to “Hey Dragon”? At first I created a rough demo on my computer at home when I was still living in California, then when I moved back to NYC and joined forces with Vlad, producer from PunkTV, he heard that song and he just came up with the better pounding drum track for it, then we never released it on the first record, “Stratosphere Sessions”, so I had it in the backlog. Finally, when I reformed as a solo artist I used that backing track and using Logic, recorded the guitars and vocals then I went to Mekia, and she did her vocals in her own bedroom when she was attending Columbia University and that was it. I had it mixed with Zenon Marko another renown producer in Tribeca who I had the pleasure to work on few other projects as well. That’s how it came about. What’s next for you in 2020? We can't wait to hear what's next from you! In 2020, now THE HOLY WOW is a band so we have been working on a few more songs we wanted to record and release at the beginning of the year. Then we want to work on a few music videos and really try to nail the new direction and the sound and the visuals to go along with it. Plans are plenty, but time is limited, but one step at a time we will get there. So stay tuned for some new music to come out in 2020. Thanks Buzz. facebook.com/theholywow instagram.com/theholywowband #BuzzMusic

- Stella Stephney Brings A Passion Filled Vocal in “I Miss You”
Stella Stephney released her song “I Miss You”. " I Miss You" has taken us back into the classic decades of when music felt-good and R&B was booming. We played “I Miss You” by Stella Stephney on full volume and the response received from our office was outstanding. This showed us that Stella Stephney has a one of a kind voice that is rare to come across. Stella Stephney has a classic, timeless voice and it carries us into the past. It was such a refreshing song to listen to. Many singers nowadays can’t deliver ballads that move people due to how much of the production today is computerized. Stella gives us a glimpse of what music could be had the industry been based on talent alone like it was in the past. “I Miss You” was a beautiful song that we couldn’t help but fall in love with. Every element to “I Miss You” was classically arranged to give us a feel of the 80s and 90s. “I Miss You” pulls you in with a texturized production that was authentically driven. Everything was highly natural and raw. The melodies throughout "I Miss You" flowed with one another seamlessly. Stella Stephney is similar to the musical greats of the past like Michele and Diana Ross. Stella Stephney is what this current market of music is missing, she brings you in with a melodic touch that’s irresistible and easily absorbable.
