- Folk and Americana Artist James Lee Baker Says There’s Nothing Like “The First Time”
James Lee Baker is a talented singer/songwriter that pours his heart and soul into his music. The Texas-based star is rising in the Folk and Americana scenes as an artist with a clear and soaring voice, eloquent and tasteful fingerstyle guitar playing, and a knack for lyrical detail with songs steeped in stories of the heartland. With an unmatched storytelling element to his artistry, James Lee Baker is the one to watch. “The First Time” by James Lee Baker is a motivating anthem to inspire and light a fire in all of us. It focuses heavily on taking control of life and our experiences and really living in the moment and experiencing life to the fullest. “One thing you figure out as the years go by.. Is it’s not like The First Time” is my favorite lyric within the melodically refreshing chorus. It hones in on the overall theme of the track and sheds light on how precious every moment in our life is, especially all of our firsts. “The First Time” is a lighthearted and catchy tune that makes you really think about how you’re living your life. I love James’ ability to curate music that everyone can relate to. I highly recommend you keep up with James Lee Baker to see what’ll he’ll deliver next! Check out “The First Time” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Can you start by telling our readers about your upbringing and how you got started making music? I was born and raised in a musically-inspired family and community. From an early age, I was steeped in attending my father's classic rock band concerts, going to summer singing camps, and competing in vocal and choral competitions. I started playing guitar at 15 and writing songs when I was 17. Music has been in my life from the beginning and is a common bond I share with so many people that I love. How do you draw inspiration from your musical influences? I take mental snapshots of things that inspire me - amazing lines from songs, motifs, textures, etc. It's sort of like seeing a painter paint with a technique you find fascinating and trying to authentically recreate it while making it your own. We love “The First Time”! Can you talk about the meaning of the lyrics? I imagined myself sitting in the passenger's seat of a car and, behind the wheel, is my younger self learning to drive a car for the first time. The lecture, if you will, is trying to emphasize that the first experiences of things are often the most memorable and can't be reproduced. When my father was younger, he spent time at his grandparent's homestead in South Texas. Years later, when asking to go back to visit it, he was told "Don't. It's not going the be the same experience as when you were younger; let those memories be what they are". Needless to say, when he went back, it wasn't the same. What do you hope your listeners take away from this song? Be cognizant of a first-time experience and enjoy it, memorably, to the fullest. Take note of it, be in the present moment, for it will be a unique experience. What’s next for you? I have one more single up my sleeve coming out in a couple months along with an expertly-produced music video by Arcadian Pictures. In the spring of next year, I will be releasing a full-length album recorded at Blue Rock Studios in Austin, Texas by the legendary Chris Bell. Keep up with James Lee Baker through his socials! I am a native Southern California kid from the VictorVille, CA area. I grew up listening to all kinds of music ranging from Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, Soul, Pop, Rock and more. I got my musical start from singing in the Church where I was able to develop my vocal and songwriting talent. I started to pursue my musical career in HS 2004 by writing and recording records in my room. By 2010 in my college career my record "Push And Stroke" received local Radio play on Northern California stations. By 2015 I received my first professional opportunity when my song "Blue Dolphinz" was placed in a LIFETIME TV movie titled "Double Daddy" while also releasing another dominant single titled "Purple Cloudz." Since 2015 I've released a plethora of records including several EP's such as "209." While also maintain full momentum in the placement world with credits from Hulu, NFL, NBA, MLB and more. What lyrics in “Insane” would you say is the most impactful for the meaning of the song and why? It's hard to choose which lyrics resonate with me the most because I feel like I truly expressed the pain of what it means to deal with tricky thoughts. Even from the Hook I set up the story by telling you "Hell yeah I'm Insane." Putting the listener into a comfortable mood allowing the to open up their minds for this brief conversation we're about to have. I wanted the listener and especially those who don't know what it means to have mental health problems a inside look. Did you feel that the message you integrated within the song was easily portrayed to listeners? Yes. I feel like I expressed my message in the most simplest form while still giving room for the beat to slap and listener to bob their head. I feel this is one of my greatest work. What do you think? How does the music you make now compare to music you made when you first started out? The music I make now vs the music of the past shows my maturity both vocally and lyrically. My confidence is well balanced and I feel I can compete with the best of them. What's in the near future for you as an artist? Releasing any upcoming tracks/any upcoming shows? Yes, I am scheduled to release my next project titled "909" in the fall time. 909 will continue the story of my life after living in the 209 detailing Highs and Lows at that particular time in my life. I am extremely excited to continue onto the next chapter of my Area Code EP's. From Great Escape to 909 and I am truly blessed and thankful to have this much success coming from where I'm from. Listen to “I Should Have Known” here and read more with Liam Cyr in our interview below! How did you get started making music? How old were you when you started performing? My father spent a lot of time teaching me how to play drums when I was a kid and introduced many different genres of music to my palette during the same time. I picked up the guitar when I was 11 years old and started writing my own songs when I was 15. I had been performing live with a couple of bands playing the drums, but my first solo artist performance was when I was 16. I covered “Gravity” by John Mayer and I was a nervous wreck. What inspired this track? Can you tell us more about the meaning behind the lyrics? The inspiration for this track came from an experience from my personal life not long ago. Somebody very close to me stripped themselves from my life abruptly, leaving me questioning if it was my own fault and what I could have done to prevent it, if anything at all. This song is a summarization of everything I was feeling in that moment of departure, and my feelings on further reflection afterwards. Do you try to incorporate your life experiences into all the music you write? Why? I do try to incorporate my life experiences into all my music. When I was recording in Los Angeles, my producer and mentor Dave Way told me that the key to a good song is an honest story. It took plenty of life experiences for me to truly understand his words. I started really paying attention to the lyrics my favorite artists were writing and found myself truly understanding why I connected to these artists and songs so much. I felt like they understood me. I didn’t feel alone. I try to do the same with my audience. How do you pull inspiration from your diverse musical influences? I study certain artists for their technical songwriting abilities, others for their exquisite and delicate guitar playing, and a handful of others for their raw emotional release. The culmination of all of these different influences helps me create my own signature. Ultimately, it comes back to the story, and I will forever be grateful to these artists for being honest about their own life experiences, so I can be honest about my own. What’s next for Liam Cyr? My next single is being released at the beginning of August, as well as an EP early next fall. Keep up with Liam Cyr through his socials! My dad and uncle played a big part in my music, they showed me what real hip-hop was and how it started. I fell in love with the music, especially when it got to the mid 80s through the 90s, that's when everyone had a unique sound and thier own style. “Looking At The World We Living In” has a very strong lyrical presence. What emotions and feelings did you have to channel when writing this track? My emotions that I had were that I was kind of like a spectator, so basically I was just not channeling what I have been through, but what I seen others go through as well. I try to tell their side of the story, and be voice to speak out how they feel or we feel. You have so many diverse influences, who would you say you draw inspiration from the most? The person I draw inspiration from the most is Tupac. I draw from Tupac because he uplift the people, he speaks what he feels, and he's honest. Most importantly he has a connection with the people that some people don't have. What theme can listeners expect from your EP “Through My Eyez”? The theme that listeners will get from Through My Eyez is Honesty. I'm being honest and speaking what I see and how I feel. This Ep will not only have you look at the world different, but also have you look at yourself to see what you can change and how to be a better person. - Canadian Electronic Rock Duo October Sky Drop Genre-Bending New Single “Ready Or Not”
Hailing from Montreal, Canada, October Sky has been making music together for over a decade. The duo is comprised of Karl Raymond (vocals, guitar and keys) and Alex Racine (drums and keys). The progressive rock collective October Sky has an impressive repertoire and has recently added electronic elements to their already spectacular sound. Their newest singles “Ready or Not” and “Let Down Enough” are the perfect balance between their love for loud, rock, and electronic music. More radio singles are ready to be dropped which will be leading up to the release of a brand new EP late 2019. We checked out October Sky’s newest single “Ready or Not” and we’re bumping it on repeat. The electronic laden single boasts a high energy mood and danceable sound. Karl’s vocal register is both impressive and diverse while consistently delivering a rock sound. The duo add’s authentic and contemporary electronic fillers to both solidify their position as an electronic rock group and showcase their incredible production quality. The single “Ready or Not” is comparable to the sounds or Nine Inch Nails or Muse with October Sky’s own individuality and flare. With an impressive repertoire and fan following, definitely stay on the lookout for October Sky and their much anticipated EP! Check out “Ready or Not” here and read more below in our exclusive interview with the duo! Hello Karl and Alex! We love your unique sound. How did you guys meet? How did October Sky come to fruition? We went to high school together and were part of the brass band. We were the two guys playing rock instead of practicing the songs the teacher wanted us to play. We started playing music together with a bunch of friends. Then we played shows for fun and it became more serious overtime. Since we are both born in October, it made sense to find a name with ''October'' in it. We decided to go with ''October Sky''. Do you have any musical influences? How do you draw inspiration from them? Yes a lot! There is that huge rock background. Bands like Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park, Thrice, Sigur Ros, Muse, Radiohead, Coldplay, U2 and the list goes on. But I think since the very beginning, we were always chasing for that electronic sound in our songs too. These days, we are trying the find the middle ground in between rock and electronic music. I think sometimes these artists are creating a certain emotion or groove that grab our attention. It inspires us to replicate that emotion in our own way, with our sound. What’s your track “Ready or Not” about? What was the writing process like for this song? To sum it up, this song is about taking a leap of faith when opportunities come by. Sometimes you will doubt yourself, have a million excuses but at the end, just do it, go for it and see what happens. It was a lot of hours playing with synths in the studio. There was no guitars or drums at first. Then we added layers and layers until we had to stop because it was getting too massive! Then we added vocals. We usually find the melody before the words. Then it came along nicely. We played it during our US Tour with ''Icon For Hire'' & ''Assuming We Survive'' and we were getting such an amazing response from the crowd every night. We knew we had something. The final touch was to go back in the studio to record the final drums, mixing and mastering, and there you have it. Can you dive into some details of your upcoming EP? Since we are still working on new material, we decided to release an EP for the fans which will consist on 3 brand new songs: ''Ready Or Not'', ''Let Down Enough'' and ''Carry On''. I think they are really different from each other but retaining that October Sky sound. ''Ready Or Not'' is an upbeat rock song with lots of energy and electronic elements. "Let Down Enough" is more of a head-bagger song and "Carry On" is more of an alternative rock song. Do you have any upcoming tour dates or events you want to talk about? This year, we are in the studio writing new material and shooting music videos. But there is definitely a North American tour in the works and some dates in Europe & the UK for 2020. - “Quit” Is Mountain Bird’s Latest Motivational Hit
Adam Öhman who is better known for his professional name, Mountain Bird, has become an artist who is quickly on the rise. Known for his mesmerizing, synth-laden melodies and sleek future-bass styled beats, Mountain Bird paints a picture of dreamy Scandinavian melancholy. From Sweden to Berlin, we can’t wait to see what Mountain Bird delivers next! “My experience so far has shown me that as long as I don’t quit, and keep pushing, things will turn out how I want them to; action breeds consequence, not the opposite. There are so many people out there that want everything, right now - but great things take time...as long as I don’t quit.” -Mountain Bird With a haunting and melancholic intro, “Quit” is a new summer sizzle from Mountain Bird. The track quickly transitions into an upbeat electronic anthem. The track focuses heavily on self-sufficiency and taking responsibility for yourself and your success. Hard work is the only true way to success and Mountain Bird knows that. He curated the track when he was going through a stressful time in his life after he moved to Berlin alone. He needed a comforting voice, so he created it for himself. The single, which features vocals from the producer-turned-artist himself, will be the first taken from a brand new EP with details to be announced in the near future! Check out “Quit” here and read more below in our exclusive interview! Hey Adam! Thanks for chatting with us! How did you get started writing music? How did you know it was something you wanted to produce more professionally? No worries :) It started off with my sister that was a great drummer and I used to borrow her drum set when she was away from the house. Later on after a bunch of years of becoming a decent drummer myself, I started taking up piano at highschool. During that time I felt super alone and had lots of problems with my panic attacks and mental health... So I asked my teacher if I could borrow the keys to the studio at the school because I didnt want to head home to the apartment because I knew my demons would come get me. I spent a lot of nights in that studio trying to learn how to produce. It was a great place to learn and I got to have the confience to experience my own failures and eventually started getting the hang of it. I think that's the most important key to being good at anything. To fail so many times that you can't fail anymore.. What does your new song “Quit” mean to you? What was the writing process like? I wrote it in a time during a lot of self doubts. I have lots of them everyday and trying to progress in music isn't a day in the park i'm telling you.. I was feeling alone in Berlin where I lived by that time, trying to write new songs. That's when I felt I needed a comforting voice since I had no one to talk to by the time. So I created it myself. Lyrics came first then I just sat infront of my piano and wrote the whole thing there, after that I moved on to logic. I also felt excited because I havent been writing something that was that upbeat before. That's something i've learned just recently, to not be afraid of whatever comes out of my mind. What do you hope your listeners take away from this song? I hope they feel empowered by their own mind and will. There's a lot of culture these days that the big cooperate people will fix your life and that we need to buy their products to be a better human. But it's not about that at all. We get so brainwashed, it's really about having the confidence to put a lot of hours into something you love until people can't ignore it anymore. Simple, yet so hard because it takes so much time and it's scary to invest your life into something that you also love. But I think now more than ever it's important to build your own bubble of meaning and be true to your self. How do you feed your passion for making music everyday? I see it more as exercising or eating or breathing. It's a long process that require me to sit down and expose myself to it. As long as I do that every day great tracks will pop out of my head, because it has happened before. I don't know how though, that's the weird thing, it's like you have some kind of weird alien contact and then suddenly you loose it again. That's why it's hard sometimes let's say in meetings to speak about your music because I don't really know how it happened haha. I also feel very inspired by singing and using my voice now. I've been practicing for lots of years but now I finally feel happy and that I can sing whatever I want to. That also alters my writing style into another dimension. When can we expect more details on your upcoming EP? What can you tell us about it? I will release a lot of singles throughout the year with like 5 weeks apart from each. That's I can say hehe....What I also can say is that from now on I will release material as much as I can, I'm writing more than ever and I'm ready to make Mountain Bird bigger now. Keep up with Mountain Bird! www.facebook.com/mountainbirdswe www.instagram.com/mountainbirdofficial #BuzzMusic
- NEW MUSIC VIDEO: “You Lost It All” By Ay
Previously featured on BuzzMusic, the soulful and angelic singer/songwriter Alex Moccia, better known for her professional name Ay. Her brand new single “You Lost It All” already blew us away with her vocal precision and empowering lyricism and now the music video is out! The 40’s inspired murder mystery begins with Ay sitting at her vanity when the camera pans to mans body on the floor. This is SO fitting for the theme of “You Lost It All”, a track about taking control of your own life and getting rid of toxic people. As the video progresses we see a man enter her house who appears to be a detective, the majority of the video is him chasing her throughout the house and into a barn on the property. Ay’s composure and acting ability is truly showcased in this powerful music video. The video is in black and white and it only heightens the viewing experience. “You Lost It All” includes the lyric “time for a little social surgery”, which is a quirky was of saying that Ay will cut off anyone who puts her in a toxic situation. The emotion and intensity is visible on Ay’s face, I believe she truly poured her heart and soul into everything about this track, including the music video. As the song comes to a conclusion, the detective is able to make his way into the barn, only to find that Ay has vanished into thin air, leaving only a note behind that reads, “You Lost It All”. The perfect poetic justice and metaphorical blow, Ay will disappear on anyone who tries to cross her. Ay is making waves in the music industry in a big way and we can’t wait to see what she delivers next! I highly recommend you check out the new music video for “You Lost It All” below! Keep scrolling for our exclusive interview with Ay. Welcome back Ay! Can you start by telling some of our newer readers a bit about yourself? Hey BuzzMusic! I’m Ay, a singer/songwriter from Boston, MA here to make soul penetrating noise. I have been composing and performing all my life. It’s my purpose to share my music and creations for you all to enjoy! I’m cutting my album in LA currently at Studio Bopnique. Follow me on my social sites to be first to see what’s coming next! We love the music video for “You Lost It All”, it’s so innovative. Was this your first experience filming like this? Tell us more about it! I’ve filmed music videos in the past, but none like the “You Lost It All” video. I wanted this piece to be more like short film and I came up with the concept during the recording of the single. The vibe of the song just transported me to a universe where I am this femme fatale criminal starring in my own film noir. I wanted the video to add a twisted layer to the song where I am taking my actions to the extreme and the story fell into place at that point. I worked with a fantastic team at Luxe Life Productions to bring the atmosphere together and shooting was a blast! You look stunning throughout the entire video! What was the inspiration behind the look and the era? Thank you so much! I have always been inspired by old Hollywood glamour and black and white movies. I loved the idea of my character being in that late 40s era, where I would look fabulous and polished even as a psycho, committing a horrible crime. I dressed in a vintage silhouette and kept my makeup true to the period. I slept in roller curlers the night before just like my nana taught me, (who was my age in the late 40s!) to achieve my curls. Prop items like the pocket watch, are truly vintage from that time as well. Where was the music video for “You Lost It All filmed? The video was actually filmed at a listed home! When scouting for locations, I was connected with an owner who was delighted to have us shoot a few scenes inside! What’s your favorite part in the video? I really love where I escape through the tiny door in the bedroom! I also love the chase scene where I slam the garage door in the detectives face. That door was heavy and hard to move, and my costar and dear friend Martin Carle was straight up RUNNING— so my panic to close it was very real haha. We love your new song “I Still Believe In Love”! What inspired this track? Thank you! Alexx came up with the lyrical concept and I ran with that idea and wrote a little verse/chorus demo on piano and she loved it - so we got together and finished the song. What’s your writing process like together? We’re both singer-songwriters, but in this situation I wanted the lyrical idea to really connect with Alexx because she’s the lead singer in this collaboration. So, we usually start with a subject matter that we’re both excited about, and then she’ll improvise melodies to my chord progressions until we find the basic verse/chorus structure; that usually happens almost instantaneously. After that, we’ll spend most of the time finishing the lyrics to all the verses, and any other parts of the song that need fleshing out. Do you have any specific artists that have influenced your sound? It was Alexx’s idea to write in this French style and she suggested writing with a vibe similar to Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose." I loved that idea, so I just submerged myself in classic French pop from the 1950s and 60s. French artists like Françoise Hardy, France Gall, and Sylvie Vartan, and American artists like Cass Elliot and The Carpenters all had a bit of an influence on this project. Can you talk more about the emotions you channeled when you wrote “I Still Believe In Love”? I dig the simple, kind of John Lennon-esque message of an undying belief in love - and Alexx was going through a breakup at the time but didn’t want that to make her bitter and jaded about love - so I think that’s where we both connected to the song. Can you tell us about this new collaboration, what can we expect to see from you in the future? We have a few more songs recorded for this project that we’ll be releasing in the near future and we’re still collaborating on new songs too! Stay connected!
