- Kevin Goodwin Captures Our Hearts Through A Melodic Story In His New Single “All I Can Think About"
Kevin Goodwin is a singer/songwriter/pianist that hails from North Carolina. Kevin has recently made his way into the music scene after releasing two singles in 2018, “Alaska” and “All I Can Think About”. I can definitely hear influences from notable artists, The Fray and Jack’s Mannequin, as a base to his really unique sound. Although he has those traces of Pop influences, his sound really stands out on its own. With his use of deep, storytelling and emotionally expressive lyrics, Kevin Goodwin has surely found a way to break into the music industry. His debut album drops February 1st, 2019. Tuning in to “All I Can Think About” immediately you are struck with a pleasant surprise. Kevin Goodwin truly has a way of projecting a soft and sultry vibe while still giving off that fun and pop energy. His voice takes you on a ride through the story of who she is and that is before getting to the video. The pianos melody is a beautiful accompaniment to the passion you hear in his voice. Then just as you’ve caught on to the hook, you are blasted into a series of ebbs and flows with this phenomenal electric guitar solo. You are caught in this emotional rhythmic battle and as you begin to unwind with the song it sends you away with a smile. Listen to Kevin Goodwin's new song "All I Can Think About" here. Hey Kevin! If you don’t mind, please introduce yourself. I'm a 24 year old singer/songwriter from Charlotte, North Carolina, who wants to bring pop/rock music back to you one song at a time. Growing up, what musical influences did you listen to the most? My childhood was filled with a lot of the music that my parents listened to. Luckily for me, that meant a lot of artists such as Elton John, Queen, and Phil Collins were my introduction to music. I was also very much into the pop and rock music that was at the forefront of the nineties. Alanis Morissette, Lenny Kravitz, and Counting Crows were not only musicians that I grew up listening to, but are still artists that really heavily influence my songwriting style. At what point did you realize you wanted to add “singer” to your list of talents? I started playing piano, and for that matter, writing songs when I was about seven. I knew ever since then that I wanted to be a songwriter. Singing wasn't something that came as naturally to me as playing piano or songwriting, though. I was a very shy kid, and it wasn't until I was about fourteen that I really started singing in front of audiences. Once I found my footing, I fell in love with it. What is your main source of inspiration for the song “All I Can Think About”? Coincidentally, “All I Can Think About” is the first song I ever finished writing with lyrics. I wrote it when I was fifteen about a girl I had a crush on who ended up coming to a New Year's Eve party I threw. I wrote it about that feeling of regret over letting your shyness and insecurity stop you from taking a chance. In this case, that chance was talking to the girl my high-school self was too nervous to ask out. Why is it important that you set yourself apart? I know that as a listener, I'm really drawn to artists that are genuinely original. I never want to hear someone doing their best impersonation of someone else; I want to hear them as the artist they are. The hard thing to figure out as an artist is what it is that makes you unique and different from everybody else. Once you get a grip on that, it's all about building on it and making your own sound. I'm a storyteller, and I want to always tell the stories I have in a way that no one other than myself could. Can you give us a sneak peak into your debut EP “This Is How It Starts”? “This Is How It Starts” is a record with songs that I wrote from many different times in my life over the past decade. I wanted to pick songs for this record that depicted love and growth of a young adult. It's a coming-of-age record, and one that I hope everyone's late teen and early twenties self will relate to. - New York Artist Sal Saatchi Releases New Song "Wrong Side" From His New Album "Sold"
Sal Saatchi is a New York native that has been pursuing his passion of music for 15 years. In May of 2016, he released an acoustic album, Live in Studio. This album featured both original songs and covers. In June 2016, Sal toured the US playing at various shows and open mic nights. He even wrote for Dream Recording Studios in September 2016. This guy was on the move! August 2018, he released 2 singles off of his debut, completely original album "Sold". Ultimately releasing the full album the same month, this singer/guitarist has something to say! So let’s check out one of the songs off his latest album titled “Wrong Side”. “Wrong Side” is the right side! Everything about the song gives you a reason to smile. I think his vocals being one of the first things you hear right after him strumming his guitar is one that gives you that good gut feeling that country music gives you. But then you have all the various drums and electric guitars and light plucking at the guitar, giving us a blues and alternative tune. It’s hard to catch the pain in his lyrics because the production and vocals are so enticing. Then you hear the story just as it closes. Sal Saatchi gives his all and then some in this track. I can hear the dedication and passion. We can't wait to hear what's next from Sal Saatchi! Listen to Sal Saatchi's new song "Wrong Side" here and find out the exclusive from Sal about the meaning behind his new song. Readers, I would like to introduce to you Sal Saatchi. Sal, tell our readers a little about yourself. Born and raised in Long Beach, NY. Been playing music for 15 years. I'm writing music to make people feel how I felt when I first heard my favorite artists play their music. I want to give someone the feeling of resonance that I felt when I first heard the first four notes of Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, or the excitement I felt from ear-ing out John Frusciante's solos on Scar Tissue and how encouraged I felt to learn more and more of my favorite artists' music. I want to pass that feeling on to other people. I want to give people a friend whenever they need one in their headphones at any given moment in any given place. How intense was the 20 city tour you had in summer 2016? I had and made a lot of friends along the way that made it way easier than it should have been. It was a blast. I made memories and connections that will last forever. There are lots of great, talented writers across this country. Go find them. Sold has been a successful album. What do you think made it so successful? The sheer number of people that contributed to this album is incredible to me. Everything was done by the power of friendship. I can't thank everyone who participated in the making of this enough. They helped me turn songs I was playing in my room into proper tracks with a full band. We did the best we could with the tools we had, I'm proud of it. What is “Wrong Side” about? Loaded question. I suppose it's about realizing that you're always going to be wrong about something to somebody, in this case that somebody was a significant other. You try every thing you can to make it work, but at the end of the day all you can really say is "I'm sorry" and give somebody time to deal with whatever it is they're dealing with. What has been the best thing so far about being an artist? I'm still having a hard time considering myself a true artist. But the best thing so far is that out-of-body experience and genuine joy you get when you're truly immersed in writing, playing or making something. What can we expect from you this year? I'd like to get a band together and play more shows. I'm looking for a drummer and a bassist at the moment. Been picking up the pen a lot lately though...maybe another album by 2020? We'll see. - Looking For A Feel Good Love Tune? “Myself In You” By Scott Pell Is Everything You're Looking For
Scott Pell is an artist that currently resides in Central New Jersey. Although a new artist, he is far from ordinary. He writes, composes, produces, mixes/masters and engineers all of his own music. That is exceptional! Most well-known artists can’t even do that. Scott released his first single just a few months ago. Now a 3-track EP, “Thank You, I Love You” dedicated to his past love. He poured his heart into this EP about the girl he use to share his life with. As I tune into “Myself In You”, I am looking forward to feeling the song entirely. This track was SOOOOOO good! I mean I can hear this mans heart in every lyric. He was in love. True love. And to rap about it in this way is inspiring. The guitar is what gets me. It gives it that smooth alternative and country mood. I can hear the mix and master production in this track and to know HE did it, Wow! He took his time and made sure the necessary additions made sense for the song. I love the end. It gives you about 30 seconds of the guitar so softly as it fades away. Emotions can create beauty and when you have all the skills to make it perfect, you come up with this. Scott Pell made a masterpiece with this single and EP as a whole and I felt it deep within. Listen to “Myself In You” here and get to know Scott Pell in our interview below! How’s it going? Care to introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Scott Pell, and I am an artist from NJ. I have been producing for 3 years, and just started putting vocals over my beats summer of 2018. My first song was released around that time. I Write/Compose/Produce/Mix/Master/Engineer all of my work. Currently attending school at Ramapo College of New Jersey, with plans of receiving a Bachelors Degree in Music Production & Engineering. Although I am self taught, I plan to refine my skills at school to take my craft to the next level. What made you decide to become the whole package when it comes to all your skills? I figure it's best to rely on yourself to make things happen. I've always loved producing, and I would write lyrics in my phone in high school. At the time I never planned to become an artist. The summer going into my first year of college I decided to purchase FL Studio and a midi keyboard, and began making beats in my dorm room at Rutgers University. I wouldn't even go out much. I was so focused on learning FL that I even filled a couple notebooks with notes. I would sit there for hours teaching myself because I never had a mentor to help teach me the technical side of music making. And for producers reading this, many of you probably know how hard that can be sometimes, especially when you're just starting out. I was originally going to major in business, but I decided to leave Rutgers and get an associates degree from my community college back at home. During that time I was only taking 3 classes a semester so I could really focus on the music. It took me 3 years to complete my associate's because I was taking my time and giving my craft the proper attention. I can say confidently now that I found the core of my sound when I came back home, and that's something I'll always treasure in my heart. It's more special and personal when you go through things by yourself. It can really test you. But the fruits of your labor are rewarding. Why did you choose to put yourself out there with this EP? For this EP, it wasn't even really about me, but the girl that it's for. I felt I needed to say these things to her. To open her eyes about love and how much I really loved and cared for her. But sometimes you don't get that in return. And I put myself out there with this project because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what people think of me, good or bad. What matters is what I think of myself, and what I want to say in my music. I am comfortable to say openly that I was depressed last year because of what happened between her and I. Lots of things weren't said, lots of emotions weren't communicated. We never ended things face to face. That's probably what hurts the most. And I was alone putting myself back together for almost an entire year because of it. Trying to find the answers within myself. I loved her more than anyone I ever have in my entire life. However, it's clear now that she didn't feel the same to the degree I did. I do believe she loved me, and maybe she still does deep down. But if you love someone, and I mean truly love someone, you show them. I haven't spoke to her in over a year and that says enough. And that's why I had to let this go. New relationships can't manifest if your holding onto past ones. I was holding myself back in life if I didn't say what I needed to say to her. The way I see myself and and my art is the only thing I am concerned about. The world will adjust. When creating the track “Myself In You” what made you come up with the choice if instrumental? First, I just want to say that this song was made in one day. I produced and wrote the song about 3-4 months ago. The mixing and mastering was done early January. I found this guitar sample and I instantly connected to it. It's a very emotional guitar melody in my opinion, you can really feel it in your heart. The beat was created pretty fast and fluid, probably in less than an hour. The writing took a little longer just because I wanted to get my words right. It's crazy because when I made this beat I didn't intend to write about her. It kind of just happened naturally. I don't like to think a lot when making music, but rather feel what the tracks call for. Forcing a certain sound or message into a track never delivers. You gotta just sit back and let your soul do the talking. She was on my mind a lot at the time, and looking back without a doubt that's why it was written about her. Any plans for visuals for this single or others? I'm on the fence if I should do a music video for this. This is very personal so making a music video feels awkward in a sense. It's too personal to put myself in front of a camera and do something for it. But I do have this idea of making a music video for "Myself In You" by letting actors take what I said and run with it. I would want to create a music video/scene telling that story. Because that's what it is to me. A story about a part of my life. I already lived it, I don't have the desire to live it again or reenact it. Having other people capture what I said into a video would be extraordinary. Honestly, I may do this. Keep an eye out. What can we anticipate coming from you in 2019? I'm dropping a single every 3-4 weeks. I will be a world-wide artist by 2020. Mark my words. Love. - "Scared" By Talley Delivers An Addictive Retro-Pop Flare
There is a fresh and new Indie Retro-pop sensation out of Denver that goes by the name of Talley. After a painful breakup with his previous band, he had no other choice but to become a solo artist. Something he never saw coming but has lead him to flourish! His debut single looks back on his past while venturing forward to explore new sounds in Indie Rock. His up and coming debut album will pay homage to a different era of music while upholding unity with his expansive, layered, optimistic sound. Talley plans to release music every month until March and then will release his debut album in June 2019. Talley just released his new single "Scared" and we're completely in love with it! The song has a really good true retro feel to it. A get up and dance all night long song with lyrics that are really easy to catch on to. A trait that is definitely something we look for in a quality song. The retro-pop flare is something we can't get enough of! The song features guitars and keys throughout the entire melody, then approaches a climax of a baring electric guitar solo with complementary drums which leads to a closing with layered vocals. Want to hear something crazy? Talley created the song completely by himself. A one man show! It's super hard to believe the whole production of the song was created by just one person! Talley is a true star. Needless to say, we're really looking forward to hearing new releases from Talley every month! Listen to "Scared" here. - Ventures Releases New Hit "Pink Flowers"
After moving out to the US from the far away city of Budapest, Hungary, Renato Gresz isolated himself from most things he was used being exposed to. This new way of living was the reason that he was able to teach himself music production in his bedroom and allowed him to experiment with different genres and styles of playing, writing and recording music. The invested time and indulging efforts resulted into an outcome we will all be appreciative of.. he project called Ventures (FKA Sea Ventures). Instead of bedroom pop his so called “bathtub melancholic” style of singing and occasional madness, creates an atmosphere that welcomes emotions in the strangest forms. Making noise into beauty that you fear to explore, but desire to experience, his song “Pink Flowers” has this dainty conviction of songwriting and emotional substance. “Pink Flowers” is highly comprehensive, unusual from your typical norm of pop music, the all-inclusive approach was memorable for me. “Pink Flowers” has numerous of elements jam packed within one transcendental record. The meaning behind “Pink Flowers” seemed to have been locked and up to us to decode and analyze the intellectual tune. The vocals alongside the cool aesthetic beat made to be my favorite elements of the song. The fused sound by both created a sensational environment for me. However, my personal favorite section in “ Pink Flowers” is the 3 different major transitions in the beat. It takes the song into multiple different directions rather than sticking within one lane. It was one of the few elements that caused me to become a fan of Renato, besides of course his poetic lyricism. The nomadic aura of “ Pink Flowers” suits perfectly for those of you who are fan of artists such as “FKA twigs”. Listen to Ventures new song "Pink Flowers". Hi there, care to introduce yourself to our readers? Hi! My name is Renato. Im 6’1” and I weigh 154 pounds. I’m a blonde Caucasian male and the color of my eyes are blue with a slight tint of green. My nationality is Hungarian and I wear glasses that are shaped like the one your grandfather probably wears. How did you form the name “Ventures” ? any meaning or inspiration behind it? Honestly it just sounded cool so I kind of went with Sea Ventures when I released my first EP, but it felt like a band name and currently I’m working alone so I decided to take the Sea out if it. There’s not really much behind it. What inspired you to write your single “ Pink Flowers”? It was actual pink flowers. I was at a thrift store in Florida and I saw these pictures of different plants and flowers and it kinda caught my attention so I kept being focused on that imagery and visual in my head. You have a unique style, if you could categorize your music in any genre what would you categorize it as and why? When people ask me about my music I usually tell them that I make sad noises, but if I had to put it into a genre I would say it’s experimental pop bestrewed with elements of eastern folk and electronic pulses. Do you have any musical influences? If so who and why? When I was making this song I actually felt bad when I heard similarity in my sound to something I listen to, because taking inspiration from other artists felt like I’m not being creative and copying someone else so it took me some time and courage to realize that inspiration is the path to creativity. You can’t really make something from nothing therefore you need a source that nudges you in a direction. Bon Iver’s 22, A Million was a major influence on this and I’d say mostly, because of the way those songs break out from the norm and have these cracks and very pleasant sound and samples which give it this unexplained flow that immediately catches one’s attention. Another big one was Trevor Powers’ album called Mulberry Violence. His way of using noise that wouldn’t be expected to be made into music, fit in perfectly with the dissonant piano chords, loud industrial beats and discontinuous scenes that leave you feeling like the blood freezes for those moments in your body. And if I had to say one more It would be Young Fathers’ Cocoa Sugar album. All three of these artists are kind of doing the same thing by making a unique sound that you couldn’t imagine hearing before so you are really surprised when you hear something so unexpected. I really look up to people who are able to create that. What’s the impact you hope for your music to have on your listeners? I don’t really want to have an impact with my music. I sure hope for it to inspire people to have a better understanding of themselves not, because I wan’t to change something in them or show them something of myself, but to help make them vulnerable towards themselves and gain more understanding of what’s going on. What was your initial vision for “ Pink Flowers” ? Do you think you executed your vision as planned? When you look at a flower you see something beautiful and captivating, but that flower also dies one day and then it looks ugly. There’s this sort of fear that takes a hold of you as you see the reality of this around you. I really wanted to focus on different things that represent the aforementioned image. “pink flowers blooming in our hearts, wild cherries rotting in our minds” I wanted to build the song around these objects and personify them as if I was talking to them, but since these also represent almost everything in life, I’m also talking to myself and everyone around me. A lot of my relationships with people and my relationship with myself are represented in this song. There’s this circle of emotions within everyone towards everyone that makes them want to say different things and change their minds about it a minute later. Like when you were a teenager and you’d tell your parents you loved them, but five minutes later when you got into some stupid fight with them you’d tell them you hate them, but an hour later you felt differently again. “so come here and rest yourself......still, I would love to make you cry”. Have you performed live yet? If so, how do you get rid of your nerves? If you haven’t performed live yet, how are you planning on overcoming any nerves you may feel? I haven’t performed with this new project yet, but when the time comes I hope I’ll figure out how to deal with it. The other bands I performed with, I didn’t feel nervous so much, because I wasn’t alone, since there were five other people performing and a concert is like a construction where you’re not the only pillar so the weight isn’t only on your shoulder and the responsibility splits up therefore you know the focus isn’t only on you. Also if I still felt anxious I just drank a few beers before the gig and hoped for the best. What’s your 3 month, 6 month, and 1 year career goal? In 3 months: Have my first gig. In 6 months: Either release an EP or be working on album in 1 year: I wanna buy a farm in Missouri and raise up families of opossums and armadillos while I have my own fountain that has root beer flowing out of if. - We Heard It First: Lady Frequency Releases New “Sweet Thang”
Lady Frequency is a phenomenal woman. Being a self-taught vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, there isn’t anything she can’t do! Falling love with music by way of piano, Lady Frequency would sit at the piano for hours playing by ear. Her relationship with the piano binder her to singing and writing music which only made sense. She has several musical influences including Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson. Lady Frequency creates an eclectic storm of sounds. Giving her her own lane and style. Looking into this song “Sweet Thang” I did not know what to expect so let’s check it out. Immediately out the gate, her cover art is crazy. I see her love for the piano is evident. Not only in the cover art but in the song as well. There’s a very familiar yet different sound here. As soon as her vocals come in completely, I am blown away by her tone. Again very unexpected because it’s got a little wine, with some house and some jazz. Not to mention the alternative with middle eastern swings. I even hear some soul. Talk about eclectic! Then the pre-climax to climax; I hear so many various sounds trailing into one another working together. Lady Frequency is the perfect name. She has taken all these frequencies and made them work for her sound. And I love it! Listen to "Sweet Thang" and check out our exclusive interview with Lady Frequency below! Hey there! Would you mind telling our readers who you are? My name is Lady Frequency and I am an eclectic soul musical artist from Ventura, California. What is the hardest thing about the production of “Sweet Thang”? The hardest thing would have been capturing all of those background vocals and harmonies. I really enjoy layered and heavy sounding vocals and those took a few days to lay down. I actually had to re-record all of them because I had recorded them wrong at first on accident. It turned out to be much better the second time and I wrote new parts to the song that elevated it. Where do you see yourself in the next few years? I see myself traveling and touring around the world and playing/making music with other like-minded musicians. It has always been a dream of mine to go to Melbourne, Australia. Hopefully I will have been there by then. If you could describe your sound in so many words what would that be? I struggle describing my sound because there are a few genres kind of mushed into one. It's really just naturally what happens and I think I've come to the conclusion of it being called eclectic soul. There are R&B, Jazz, Funk, and Neo-Soul elements in what I tend to create. Where can we find you on social media? You can find me on Instagram. My username is @ladyfrqncy. What can we anticipate coming from you this year? I'm very excited to be releasing my first ever album this year and will be playing some shows as well. - Indie Discovery: Check Out Lankford’s Song "Melt"
Indie singer-songwriter and composer Matt Davis otherwise known by his stage and recording name, “Lankford” released his first single, “Melt” in October of 2018. The listener is introduced to a lovely and beautiful folk guitar instrumental as the music video begins. We are greeted with a monotone music video which is perfectly complemented with the sweet and subtle tones of acoustic guitars and reverb. The song itself is very calming and is reminiscent to a stripped down version Of Monsters and Men and Bon Iver. The tempo is kept by what seems to be shakers and maybe a tambourine, which adds to the depth of the song. A lot of imagery is used in the music video itself, which displays a high production quality especially with the neat effects of large shadows that seem to be taunting the woman that is dancing. Lankford’s vocals are dreamy and makes the listener more intrigued by the second. The tone quality of the track is very nostalgic in a way and gives off a very longing kind of vibe. This is a very beautiful song and is well rounded in all verses and aspects. If you love indie music, this will be your new bop to have on repeat! Be sure to listen and add "Melt" to your favorite playlists! Why do you think you gravitated toward an indie genre of music? I think I gravitate towards the indie genre on accident. As a songwriter I wanted the freedom of self expression without the expectation of creating a specific genre like rock or pop. When I wrote “Melt” I was asked, “what genre of music is it?” I didn’t really know. Did some searching for artists with similar styles, and the indie genre just stuck. How would you describe your songwriting process? (i.e. do you have a concept in mind, write lyrics before melody etc). Songwriting to me is like communicating. I get a certain emotion about an event in life. Sometimes its fresh and I'm in the moment, sometimes I've been holding on to it for a while. I will just start putting my brush to the canvas and the picture comes to me, like I'm finally ready to let the world know how I really feel. Its liberating. Sometimes I hum gibberish until words just form. Like I'm letting go of what was always there. Where does your stage name Lankford come from? The name Lankford. Well growing up, I always thought my step dad was my father. Wasn't until I was in my teens that I found out my parents split when I was just a couple years old. After reconnecting with my father I found out our biological last name was Lankford. I decided to go by that, and honor my father as a way of forgiving him, and to symbolize reuniting with a part of my identity. My history. What is one thing that you think your listeners should take from your song , “Melt”? I hope my listeners get a sense of encouragement. That they can speak up about any negative self image, doubt, depression, or whatever it may be that is keeping them from their own perception of a happy life. I hope they know that they are not alone. And that they cherish those who stand and love us when we are down. What is your favorite lyric of , “Melt” and why? My favorite line is probably the chorus. “Can’t keep this all together, will you love me till I'm better” Because it sort of ties the whole idea of the song together. We all need someone, especially when we believe the worst in ourselves. What inspired you to write “Melt”? I have struggled with self doubt and depression pretty much my whole life. I've really seen what it can do to those who give in. “Melt” was a moment where I was thinking about some family members, how I wish I could have been there for them. Its sort of what everyone's afraid to say, fearing they will look weak. I wanted to break that barrier down. What's planned for Lankford this year? This year is a big year for Lankford. My first Single “Melt” is gaining momentum. Lankford will continue to produce new singles, leading up to a full album. Meanwhile we have a partnered project with a European brand that will be a surprise hopefully releasing very very soon. This is just the beginning. - Take A Trip With Kasey Rios With His Latest “33.3705N, 35.2038 E / 2AM”
Kasey Rios, an independent R&B recording artist, is also known as Ali Ghoussein. This San Bernardino native has had a passion for music since the young age of four. Some of his favorite artists were Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Will Smith and Chris Brown to name a few. At the age of 6 his family relocated to Lebanon and his love for music went with him. This artist music blends elements of trap, hip hop, soul, with a little fresh twist. Take a smoke break and tune into Kasey Rios’ latest track. Tuning into “33.3705N, 35.2038 E / 2AM” you’re hit with so many things at once. This track has a strange beauty. One that sounds so different but it is a pleasurable tune. You can get lost in this track. From the lyrics that have deep meaning of what you would think is a relationship giving it that R&B feel. But then it’s trippy with the trap house production. The choice in manipulation of vocals for this track was done really well. It’s the perfect balance and it is heard throughout from start to finish. This track gives you a little hip hop, just enough trap and wrapped up in a polished R&B package. Listen to the latest from Kasey Rios here. Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Kasey to find out more about his music career and what “33.3705N, 35.2038 E / 2AM” means from the artist himself. What’s up! Could you please share with our readers about yourself Kasey? Hey guys, thanks for having me. My name's Kasey Rios, i'm an independent R&B/Soul artist originally from San Bernardino, CA, but I've moved between Lebanon and LA. I've been in LA for about four years now, making music for about ten, since I was fourteen. I started out producing on an old white MacBook with a friend I met from school, and we recorded music together as a way to talk about the things going on around us. But our friends and families were always very supportive of us and thought we could really do it in a larger capacity, as opposed to just a hobby, lend a voice to everyone who couldn't say what they wanted to, especially where we grew up. I ended up pursuing music as my main endeavor which lead me to come out to LA and actually go to school for it. I graduated from the Musicians Institute last April from their Independent Artist Program, and now I'm working on building a career as a recording artist. Your latest track “33.3705N, 35.2038 E / 2AM”, explain the idea behind the name? 33.2705 N, 35.2038 E are the coordinates of the city of Tyre, Lebanon, where I spent a lot of time growing up, and where I originally started making music for the first time. I'm actually out here working on my new project now, which is why I named the record after it, the project and record are influenced by things that have happened since coming back here and I wanted to convey that in the title. When you are coming up with a new track, what are some of the first things you do to “prepare”? To be honest I start to work on a new track when I have something specific I want to talk about. So based off of whatever that may be, my process usually starts on a keyboard or chopping up a sample that embodies the vibe of what I'm saying and want to put the listener in with me. Then I'll listen to some of my biggest musical influences that have that sound I want my record to have for inspiration and I'll hit the studio to bring it to life. What led you to the genre of music you produce? My music is mostly fueled by R&B, Soul and Hip Hop, and it really comes from my parents. Growing up my dad or my mom were always playing music around me, and R&B/Hip Hop were they're genres. I came up on Pac, Big, Sade, Bob Marley, Jodeci, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, artists like that. The legends. What I try to do with my music now is blend and pair the sonics and melodies of classic and contemporary R&B with the rhythm and lyrical intricacy of Hip Hop in all its facets. It allows me to discuss more eclectic topics and do it in a way that you'll vibe out to and remember, I hope. What is the hardest things being an independent artist? I love being involved in every aspect of my music, whether it's the process of recording it, promoting it, or legally protecting it, I want to be part of it. It gives me a hand on the whole brand of "Kasey Rios" as opposed to just the songs I make. That in itself though is the best as well as the hardest part I would say of being independent. It can be stressful and tasking to be running point of every aspect of your music alone, because you can't afford to lag or be inefficient in any area, or your project and your brand suffers. So it's not a bad thing to be doing, but it can be difficult. Your triumphs as well as your failures are yours alone, which is good. When will you drop a new EP for your listeners? I'm currently in album mode as we speak, like I said earlier I'm actually in Tyre, Lebanon till February recording and working on the project, I plan to release a double album this coming year. The first half I'm hoping will be out mid March and the second coming in the fourth quarter of the year. It's an ambitious record, between the two projects, I'm recording around 52 tracks. So I hope you guys enjoy them and it's gonna be fun. - Indie-Pop Duo Electric Tongues Give Us Chill Vibes With “Finsta”
Finally, an indie-pop duo that we didn’t ask for, but absolutely needed. Phillip James and Maxwell Ogden, known as Electric Tongues, is the perfect duo straight from Dallas, Texas. The two incorporate and intertwine their abstract ideas effortlessly within their tracks, making us feel intimately connected with their ideologies. As a fairly new duo, Electric Tongues have impressively released two EP’s that are on regular rotation on Dallas Radio. This duo creates a combination of intensifying yet equable music we quite haven’t heard before—but now it’s impossible to forget. Electric Tongues really got it right with their recent release of “Finsta”. This new track provides an experience that begins with electrifying synths combined with compelling vocals spread out over perfectly blended harmonies. “Finsta” maintains its serene vibe throughout, which is our favorite aspect of the song and how it captivates you through its entirety. The irony in their name becomes relevant when listening to this new track—the electrifying vibe courses through your body. Although Electric Tongues is a fairly new duo, they’re going to be around for awhile—we’ll make sure of it. Check out Electric Tongues “Finsta” here. Hey there, introduce yourselves—how did you become a duo? Maxwell: My girl, Alyssa, introduced us. Her friend Juvy was friends with Phil so we kinda all just hung out. I knew he made music but what I really needed was a singer. I asked if he sang and he said yeah and sent me a clip. We immediately got to work. Phillip: Max and I were introduced not too long after my last band split, so I wasn’t feeling super optimistic about my career in music at the time. As soon as I heard Max’s solo work, I knew he was the one I needed to create with. Our track “Favorite Haunt” was pretty much complete after only two sessions together. The energy we have together is definitely unlike anything I’ve experienced before. What was essential in the curation of "Finsta”? Phillip: I’ve always wanted to write something about how signs of depression, addiction, or overall hopelessness often slip through otherwise picture-perfect lives via Instagram posts. People are sad out there, but can’t seem to say it, unless it’s a caption attached to some edgy shit. Maxwell: To me, “Finsta” is a sort of theme song of a generation. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing, I think it’s something that everyone can relate to. Did your visions ever clash while creating “Finsta"? Maxwell: Not really, to be honest. The only thing that comes to mind was Phil initially wanted a different lead guitar on the chorus, but I wanted to keep it simple. Phillip: As Max mentioned, the only thing we really “clashed” over was that lead guitar line. We ended up moving that line to clear some real estate for the other instruments in the track. What are Electric Tongues goals for 2019? Maxwell: We have an EP planned, a video, a few other things... we hope to grow our following and build our name. Where do you see Electric Tongues in 5 years from now? Phillip: We’re really just enjoying the ride. There is no limit. I just want as many people to hear us as possible. Jade Stone is a musical powerhouse composed of a vocal/rhythm guitarist, a bassist, drummer and lead guitarist. These guys are split between Whittier, CA and Colima, Mexico. Jade Stone has a uniqueness not only in their location and story but also in their sound. They explore various musical sounds, like reggae, country/western, and soul, showing the diversity of the band. They draw sound influences from Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Coldplay just to name a few. “In the Clouds”, their latest single is sure to prove just how unique they are. This dreamy rock single is one for the books! Jade Stone has managed to create an upbeat, dancefestopia of sounds in their latest “In the Clouds”. It comes in nice and easy and then 1-2-3-4 the drums and bass drop! This single has a very nice flow and every sound compliments the other. From the bass guitar, to the electric guitar, to the artistic vocals, and the drums; everyone in the band gets a spotlight! All is accounted for here in "In The Clouds". This single is one that no matter who you are, you find a love within it. Looking forward to what more this band has to bring in 2019! Listen to "In The Clouds". Hey there guys! Our readers are eager to meet you. Do you mind introducing yourselves? Hello! The band members include Daniel Gomez on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Adrian Fatout on lead guitar, Jorge Vuelvas on bass, and Fernando Carrillo on drums. Tell us about how the band met. This band has a very unique story. Daniel works at a coffee shop in Whittier, California. Jorge and Fernando are originally from Colima, Mexico, but were touring California with their ex project, “Rey Apache.” They decided to set camp in Whittier and live there for a couple years. It just happened to be that Jorge and Fernando would go to the same coffee shop that Daniel worked at. After a while, they became “regular” customers and Daniel sparked up conversation with them. They barely spoke any English, and Daniel spoke very little Spanish. However, this didn’t stop them from becoming good friends. It’s a similar story with Adrian. Jorge and Fernando were at a local music store when they randomly bumped into Adrian. Adrian asked if they wanted to play and they quickly bonded over music. Adrian was unaware that they really only spoke Spanish so he was talking to them in English at first. When Adrian heard them talking to each other in Spanish, that’s when he asked, “Hablas español?” It turned out Adrian was actually fluent in Spanish, and they quickly became good friends. Daniel and Adrian met through Jorge and Fernando when they were both asked to be part of a “Rey Apache” music video. Since then, it’s been history. We all became really close friends, who know how to rock. Your name, Jade Stone, that is so unique. What is the background story behind it? As I was looking for a name for this new project, I was doing research on a lot of crazy weird things. I needed a name ASAP because I was leaving to Mexico to record my album in a couple weeks, and I wanted to make merch to take out there. While figuring out the project name, I came across different kinds of stones, reading about their “powers” and “energy”. Jade helps to promote creativity and helps you understand your dreams, which is something I feel I can really relate to. After reading about all of Jade’s meaning and property, I knew this was it. “Jade Stone” was born. -Daniel How do you manage the band from two different Countries? Well it’s a bit difficult. Obviously, we aren’t playing multiple gigs a week, we just can’t. However, this is still a very new project so we’re still trying to figure everything out ourselves, but we’ve been making it work so far. This is only the beginning, so just look out for us. What influenced this new single, “In the Clouds”? I began writing “In the Clouds” in March 2018. It wasn’t originally supposed to be on the record since recording was scheduled to start in a few months. However, I knew it was a good song, and it just HAD to be on the record. I feel like everyone can relate to the song. I feel like everybody’s been in a position where they’re just like, “ I really wish I can get away right now”. The song talks about my frustrations with my current life situation, not that it’s bad, but I want to do more, I want to travel, I want to play music. Obviously this requires money, a lot of it, which I just don’t have because I’m only 20. That’s the frustrating part, but it’s all good, I’ll get there. -Daniel What can we look forward to from you guys this year? This is going to be a big year for us. We just released our first single and we have 2 more singles we plan on dropping before the actual record. The album has 14 songs, and they’re all different. It’s a very diverse album, it’s different, it’s unique, and I can’t wait for the people to hear. We’re only getting started, so keep an eye out for us.
