So Cekure is a 27 year old lyrical poet coming from Landover, Maryland. My favourite verse from his new song is “I got something to say I get down on my knees and pray, I’ve been thinkin’ about your love all day”. I like how he is straight up about the fact that he’s in love and has no shame in it. “On My I G” has a positive vibe to it and So Cekure sings every lyric with confidence and emotion. “On My I G” is right on trend with all of the top 100 songs topping todays charts. I highly recommend checking out So Cekure so you can rep him before he blows up! Listen to "On My I G" here, and scroll below for the artists exclusive interview! Is there a hidden meaning behind “On My I G”? I wouldn't say there was a hidden meaning. Consistently when I would go to my IG app, I would see these beautiful amazing women everyday. I simply made a song reflecting the emotions and thoughts I felt and had. What makes “On My I G” different from your other releases? Well first, it's my first official single that I have released on all platforms. It was my first time using auto tune. It was also the very first positive feel good song that I had done for a long time. The first song I had done when I had completely climbed out of a dark place. What inspired you to start writing music? My friend who was more like a brother to me, José. I made a promise to him when he died that I would at least try to become a rapper because that's what he wanted for me. I started out as a poet and he used to read all of my poetry. He kept pushing me to rap as I deflected the idea. Now here I am. He never even got to hear my first song but I hope I'm making him proud now. My best friend Maus too. She's the reason I started writing poetry again to begin with. She continues to be a muse for me even today. Do you have any musical influences who have helped shape your career in music? If so, who and why? Most definitely J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. To me they both embody everything rap/hip hop was, is, and will be. I feel like they've kept it the realest in the industry. They actually care about the content in which they give to the world. They are two of the best talents I've ever had the privilege to witness. What's next for you through 2019? I'm currently working on piecing together an album. I'm not promising that it will be out this year though. I do have more singles to drop. Growth is my main focus this year. I'm currently exploring ways to achieve the growth I'm searching for, which lead me to this opportunity. Hum along with “Stay” on Spotify, and continue reading for Austin’s interview with us at BuzzMusic! Hey Austin! Introduce yourself to the listeners of BuzzMusic! Hi, My name is Austin David. I'm an L.A. based singer/songwriter originating in Michigan. I love the guitar and and that's my main instrument. I moved out here 7 years ago to pursue the dream! Spend most of my time writing and recording and perfecting the craft. I also play out as much as I can. Where did your inspiration stem from in order to curate “Stay”? I'm always try to bottle up that "PCH, summer drive, falling in (or out) of love, california, chill-surf-vibes. I love jazzy chords and bluesy licks. Was “Stay” executed in the way you initially envisioned it to be? Originally I just had the chorus and guitar parts. I was struggling to get  good verses. I brought it into my producer Garen, and we hashed it out the remaining parts. He's a great songwriter and really helped me execute the vision of it. Who are the top three artists you look up to today? How big of an impact do you think they have on your music curation? Kurt Cobain- His prolific songwriting ability, his ability to blend genres, and the depth to his lyrics. Stevie Ray Vaughn- Lets be honest, he was the baddest guitarist to walk the earth. I gravitate towards his spirit. It's like an other-worldly experience when you get immersed in his songs like "Lenny" and "Life by the drop". Bob Marley- he'll always be mine #1. I was rocking the legends album at age 5. As I got older and learned more,  I strongly identified with the "lets smoke a joint and groove reggae music" type of vibe the he helped cultivate. What can we expect to see from you throughout the rest of 2019? I have a couple of music videos in the works. A kick-ass director found me on Spotify and offered to shoot a pro bono video. So that's been booked! I have a show in L.A June 2 at the Song Bird Cafe. Also, I'm playing Kurt Cobain for 5 shows coming up in June in Laughlin, Nevada. It's this event at a casino out there called the 27 Club. There's an Amy Winehouse, Janis, Hendrix, Morrison and Robert Johnson etc. It's a cool throwback concert, paying homage to all the greats that passed at 27. I'll continue to be pushing new singles, videos, and shows. Stay relentless. Connect and get to know Austin better through his socials: Facebook Instagram Twitter #BuzzMusic

  • Thunder Club Comes Out With Incredible New Track "Go Ahead"

Thunder Club is a five-piece indie rock outfit hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. Their ranks consist of guitarists Pete Burkhardt and Dennis Chen, lead singer Garret Cusack, bassist Conor Johnson and drummer John Burkhardt. Thunder Club’s unique style emerges from the chemistry between the musicians as well as their collective goal to stay simple. They are able to simultaneously incorporate a wide variety of musical influences into their songs. Their music is lively, enegergetic, and place a focus on groove and melody. Thunder Club has quickly gained a local following with the release of their self titled EP in 2016 and their dynamic and lively performances. Most recently, they’ve been gearing up for yet more releases in 2019, so keep your ear to the ground! “Go Ahead” is the latest single by Thunder Club. The ears are immediately treated to a great guitar riff, and a rock beat that will have you instantly grooving along and reaching for the volume knob on your stereo. The drums and bass are so tightly wound together that it sounds like they are sharing one brain, and the two guitar parts are distinct yet harmonious, playing off each other in a way that really establishes two valuable melodic lines. The chorus sees a return to the fabulous riff introduced at the beginning of the song, which seems like a unique take on a chorus, allowing the instrumentation and arrangement to shine through. The bridge however is definitely showcasing the powerful vocals, and the whole band builds to a climax. This band clearly knows what they are doing, delivering a powerful sound but with so many subtle details, culminating in what is a tremendous song that is well written and well produced. Thunder Club is sure to have you grooving, and they will certainly not disappoint. Make sure you check out "Go Ahead" here. Continue scrolling for Thunder Club's exclusive interview with BuzzMusic! Thanks for taking some time and answering a few questions! First of all, how about a bit of backstory? How did you all meet and form Thunder Club? Hey, thanks so much for having us! We started this project just about two years ago. Pete and John are brothers and were neighbors with Conor. Conor went to high school with Garrett and Dennis. We each went our own separate ways within music with some of us forming our own bands throughout the years and then most recently coming together to put this together. Fun fact, we had recorded our first EP without having a name for the band. We hadn't thought of a name until we finished up in the studio. Being from Baltimore, how would you guys describe the general music scene there? Is there a large rock scene? The music scene in Baltimore is pretty damn amazing. It's not a huge market as compared to DC or New York, but we've got some magic down in these parts that people should not miss. We've got excellent groups like Super City, Outcalls, Beach House, and Future Islands. Baltimore has a great music scene that includes everything from indie rock to DJ's and hip hop. The arts district gives us a great opportunity to play at some really excellent clubs like Metro Gallery, Ottobar and Joe's Squared (they have AWESOME pizza!). As a band, who would you say you collectively draw artistic influence from? We draw from a ton of influences and they change all the time. Most recently we've taken a lot of influence from The 1975, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Queens of The Stone Age. We also take huge influence from bands like The Strokes, The Killers and Kings of Leon. We also can't ignore the greatness of Led Zeppelin either, they're hands down one of the greatest to ever do it! Can you delve into your songwriting process a little bit? How do these songs all come together? The songwriting process is interesting. We can't really pinpoint a songwriter within the band since we all contribute equally and construct the songs together. It'll usually begin with an idea from someone in the band whether it's Garrett on keys, or Conor with a bass riff, or some instant classic riff from the guitar boiz of Pete and Dennis, and every once in a while a fresh drum idea from John. With all that put together Garrett finds an infectious melody and puts together a most excellent choice of words to put to the melody to top off the song structure. What can we hope to see from Thunder Club in the future? We are finishing up a couple songs in the studio and aiming to release those in the next coming months so be on the lookout for those. We have shows coming up in Baltimore, DC, Philly and New York. We also have some great shirts that people say are some of the most comfortable T's they've ever put on their backs. We also just want to add that we really appreciate the time everyone takes to listen and support our project. This is the dream and every listen or t-shirt bought helps keep that dream alive so we would like to thank everyone who has come out to shows and listened to us online. We also would like to thank everyone at Buzz Music for the great support we've gotten from you all. It's been most excellent and we can't wait to continue this journey! • Michelle-Lee Drops New Single "Made"

Michelle-Lee comes to us from Delaware, where she began showing off her incredible vocals at a local church. It was her mother who encouraged her to take her music career one step further and begin writing as a solo artist. Michelle-Lee brings us a refreshing personality, she's spiritual and fun-loving. She invokes the spectacular and timeless melodies of artists like Toni Braxton and Anita baker, while still keeping her style modern and fresh. Not only is Michelle-Lee a talented vocalist, but she's an experienced and educated songwriter. Her strong connection with music is easily audible in her single "Made". The power and soul in her emotionally-rich voice take us on a meaningful journey through her authentic relationship with worship. "That's just the way He made me, in his image" is a layered lyric, it's about how He makes no mistakes, and how we should always be grateful for who we are as individuals. The R&B vibe in this finely-calibrated piece fuse perfectly with Michelle-Lee's passionate vocals. “Made” is a unique collaboration of soulful lyrics and beat and it stands out. We can feel the love and admiration in her voice, but the beat has us swaying along to the music. We had high expectations and Michelle surpassed all of them. This dreamy new single has us craving more from Michelle-Lee, and personally, it will be bumping on my playlist! Add this track to your Spotify playlist, and continue reading for Michelle-Lee's interview. At what age did you decide to start pursuing music on your own? I decided to start pursuing music in 2015 so when I was 26. Since I was young I was involved with music (ie: dance, piano, ensemble) but I didn't begin taking it seriously as a solo artist until 2015 when I left the bands I performed with and began to record my own music. What would be your dream collaboration? Wow, it seems absurd to actually write it out but time to write the vision and make it plain! My dream collaboration would be Pharrell Williams, John Legend and Alicia Keys. I love how inspiring and influential their music is to the world. Their music is message-based and carries a TON of encouragement which is really valuable to me as a songwriter. Plus, they just create the most amazing and timeless music! Definitely squad goals! What’s your writing process like? For the longest time I would find instrumentals that intrigued me and build my concept then go form there but that has changed within the last 6 months or so. Concepts have been flooding my spirit with no music or direction behind it which has been difficult for me to create. I'm still trying to figure out a way to translate what I hear in my head into that same sound and vibe which hasn't always successful but that's new levels for you. A lot of my influence for concepts comes from life, surroundings and unexplainable emotions. I try to create music from those quiet moments and thoughts that are a lot of times unspoken. There are so many common thoughts amongst people that are rarely shared. If we spoke up, others would hear that they're not the only ones experiencing these emotions, thoughts and feelings. If you could change anything about "Made", what would it be and why? Sheesh, tough question. Of course as the singer/songwriter I should say that I wouldn't change a thing but that wouldn't be honest or transparent. "Made" is actually one of those songs I was speaking about in the previous question. The concept of the song came while listening to the beat (produced by Jim Boonie) and although I could hear and feel the vibe inside, I was having the most difficult time laying it in the studio! For months, I worked on this song, adding parts, removing parts and reconfiguring the song structure. It got to a point where I didn't know where else to take it so...I released it! Sonically, I listen to it and hear things that I would like to add, and probably will if I decide to create a remix, but the message of the song is loud and clear and honestly, that's my whole reason for writing! In this season, I'm learning as long as the listener can receive the message and can vibe with the music that surrounds it, it's good to go! Tell us more about the message you want to get across to your fans in "Made"? Made was created for the era we live in. A world that only displays the highlights and discards the remaining, shares the good selfies and filters the bad ones or promotes achievements without discussing the failures along the way. Even as a confident women, I sometimes find myself sliding into comparing my dress size, hair length, flaws, etc to a profile on Instagram and have to "reel myself in" reminding myself that these images aren't the standard of beauty! God designed each and every one of us intentionally unique. We are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God. Out of every remarkable animal, breathtaking sunset or astonishing flower, WE are in the image of God! To know that everything that makes us "us" was created intentionally and without mistake, gives me a type of confidence that I just couldn't keep to myself...so I wrote a song lol. • You Want It? He Got It! CSABA Releases A Summer Vibe!

CSABA is an independent artist hailing all the way from Edmonton, Canada. Not only is he an artist, but he’s also a producer who makes beats, records, and engineers vocals in his home studio. His vision is to take it as far as possible, and use music as a way to spread his message and help people feel a certain way, the same way other artists have done for him. CSABA released his record titled “Got It” and the engrossing production is what instantly caught my interest! The beat was highly contextual and far different from other records you are so used to hearing nowadays. CSABA rap flow and style was incredibly idiosyncratic compared to other rappers typical lyrical arrangements. He spits in a rapidly increasing pace while maintaining effortless breath control, alongside delivering the aggression and energy in the articulation of his voice. “Got It” was a fantastic offering from a rising star who has every right niche in his style and artistry to stand apart from the crowd. From his meticulous producing, to his highly addictive style, CSABA doesn’t just stop with an audio hit. Instead, he gives his listener the ultimate visual with a dope music video to match the song! With a hit video and a hit record, How could CSABA go wrong? The energy is there, the lyrics are catchy, and the hook is habit-forming. It would be a surprise to hear somebody say they dislike this record knowing all the right ingredients is there!  “Got It” can get your party started or your cruising relaxable! Great music and great vibes is all we need this upcoming summer season and CSABA has definitely got it (pun definitely intended). Check out "Got It" here, and keep scrolling for CSABA's interview with us at BuzzMusic! Hello! It's great to chat with you. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Hey! Likewise. Well, I'm 22 and have been creating music consistently for 5 years, but the dabbling definitely started closer to around when I was 10. It's been a passion of mine and the goal is to reach as many people that I can with my music and hope it can affect at least a few people the same way it did me. What does CSABA stand for? Hahah, well Csaba is my legal name and I thought it was dope enough to be a stage name on it's own so I dropped my last name and capitalized it, like I do with opportunities *finger guns* How is the music scene in Edmonton, Canada? How has this shaped your career in music? It's good! There's definitely some talented locals like Conch, Doom Squad and Aidan Murphy. I've collaborated with a few locals and done a few shows here, it's a lot more poppin' than it used to be for sure. I do wish artists were more open and not put themselves on a pedestal though, I think some cats do that here. Tell us about the single “Got It” and what the inspiration behind the song is! To be honest, I was just playing with some sounds in FL Studio and put a little beat together in about 10 minutes.. I instantly freestyled the hook and layered it, then wrote the verses quickly, recorded, mixed it, mastered the next day and put it out for distribution. What was the most challenging aspect in creating “Got It”? There wasn't necessarily a challenge composing it, but as artists typically do, I had my thoughts of "is this dope enough?" "Is it too simple?" but that's the beauty of music and social media now. You can drop song after song n see what people like instantly and mix some of that in with the next few songs, but not forgetting to stay in your lane and finding a sound you as the artist likes. What's next for you through 2019, CSABA? Working on my brand/business, and be in everyone's face with music. Connect with CSABA via the artists socials: Facebook Instagram Twitter #BuzzMusic

Gussie learned the art of production for commercials and television & film work while he was taken under the wing by owners of several major recording studios early on. Gussie has toured as a background vocalist with artists like Lavern Baker, Seal and Cher.He has also worked in studio with artists such as Gino Vanelli, Cher, Lance Todd, Marcus Miller, Lavern Baker and Jessica Celious. Gussie’s songs are played around the world in TV shows like “Doogie Howser M.D.” and his voice heard more recently in the movie “I Think I Love My Wife”. Working with some of the biggest names in music and film while taking time off to raise his kids, Gussie has a successful career as an engineer and technician. He was feature on NBC’s “The Singing Bee” and has been the recipient of numerous articles about his many talents. Gussie embarked on a long journey to complete his first CD – “Forever Plan” – which was finally completed in 2016, co-produced and mixed by Mike Fennel, the chief engineer at Universal Music Publishing Group, and recorded by Gussie and Motown engineer Ralph Sutton. “Forever Plan” is now available on all online streaming services, and has even earned a spot on the 2016 Grammy ballot as one of the first “digital only CD’s” in The Recording Academy history. Gussie is currently working on building his audience with live shows and touring to prepare for his next album! “When Your Eyes Met Mine” is a jazzy, sultry song that mixes with multiple elements of indie, pop, and rock. Featuring Laura Dickinson whose voice is alluring and complements the sexy tones of Gussie’s voice, and beats so smooth and upbeat that are easy to drift away in. You can really tell that Gussie Miller knows how to write good music that engages his listeners, and relaxes their ears yet gets them up and dancing. The lyrics in “When Your Eyes Met Mine” tell a sensual story, leading you through a mysterious and luring tale about love that is almost like each vocal part is a call to the other confessing the passion behind the lyrics. I love the higher register that is found in Gussie Miller’s voice that shows his real talent in manipulating the notes to his pleasure, and you can hear that he really has power behind his higher notes. It sounds like both singers really enjoy adding their own finesse to the song, almost like making music is another language they are both fluent in. Each instrument blends so effortlessly together giving the structure of “When Your Eyes Met Mine” a solid backing and the contrast between chorus and verse really gives depth to the lyrics. Listen to "When Your Eyes Met Mine" here and get to know more about Gussie Miller below! Hey Gussie! Fantastic to chat with you! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and how you began to write music? I am a musician, audio engineer, and music producer turned artist after years of working behind the scenes with artists like Lavern Baker, Gino Vannelli, Seal, Mindi Abair, Keb Mo and Marcus Miller. I've done a lot of studio work as a session vocalist, and programmer, and I worked in TV as a union audio engineer and in 2016 I released my first solo CD "Forever Plan" for Grammy consideration. What is the meaning behind “When Your Eyes Met Mine” and what was the creative process like for this song? The song "When Your Eyes Met Mine" was written with an old friend songwriter Gwen Cardenas and was written about that time when you see someone you like, and the very first time you lock eyes with them and that "magic happens" that's the meaning of the song. We were very lucky to get noted singer and Grammy winning vocal arranger Laura Dickinson to sing the duet with me. Laura and I met after I saw her in a stage play, and fell in love with her vibe and her voice. What gives you inspiration and drive to write music? My inspiration and drive to write music comes from growing up in a family full of musicians and music teachers. I caught the music bug early by growing up in a house where my Father was a Jazzer who listened to Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald while my Mother was a fan of more pop stuff like Nat King Cole, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Later on while in Catholic High School, I was turned onto singer-songwriters like James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Michael Mcdonald, Level 42, Scritti Politti, Prince, Lionel Richie and of course Fleetwood Mac...and it was all over with! With such a wide variety of style and taste in genre, have you found that it is difficult mixing multiple genres together to get that happy medium? Regarding mixing genres, no I've never had any issue with creating tuneful music that is based in many different styles, because that is my life, a mixture of many different styles and with an emphasis on melody being king. always. A great song is always timeless and based on a great melody. What can we expect to see next from you in 2019? I am currently writing new songs for my follow up CD tentatively called "My Name Is Gussie" (which is a play on the fact that people always ask me what my real name is, or what it's short for, and it's just my legal name) and so far we are finishing songs we didn't include on "Forever Plan" and I'm seeking out younger remix artists and writers to give the new songs as edge as possible. We have some surprises lined up and some special guests, and we've been talking to some legendary producer engineers, to see if we can come to an agreement of producing. It's going to be a much shorter CD, but it will be epic! • NateThePrnce Sets The Tone For His Record “Lights Off”

NateThePrnce is an Canadian artist from Brampton Ontario who dived into the music scene 2 years ago and has mentally selected this year to be the year where he makes his dream a reality. Music has always been a part of him and he’s been musically inclined due to coming from a family with a musical background. The 22 year old began young creating videos for his channel on youtube, and rapping to some of his personal favorite beats and sharing it with friends. Fast forward to 2019 the talented artist who represents his city proudly loves to create music that the audience can vibe to. His style bounces between HipHop/Rap to R&B/Soul. NateThePrnce released the sensual single titled “Lights Off” and it was nothing more than a flawless vibe! The aesthetic to “Lights Off” gave off subdued lighting, romantic elements including candles, roses, and the companionship between two loved ones! When you close your eyes and just listen to “Lights Off’ your mind is bound to paint images and create the story in your head. The lyrics were witty, catchy, and stylistic. The hook was repeatable, addictive, and had a way of sticking to our memories like Superglue. It began with a seductive and hazy production setting the tone of the song and having its listener prepared for what’s to come. NateThePrnce has a special vocal quality to him that makes his music pop. It weaves the lines between classic and modern RnB while remaining true to the persona of NateThePrnce. NateThePrnce intricate melodies and irresistible flare to his sound is what makes this record a captivating hit. NateThePrnce is a true gem from Ontario who has the right mix of ‘star’ and authenticity to become a groundbreaking hitmaker! Listen to "Lights Off" here and get to know more about NateThePrnce below! Hello and welcome to BuzzMusic. Can you tell our readers about yourself? Hello and thank you for this opportunity, for those who don’t know me I go by NateThePrnce from Brampton, ON, Canada.  I’ve been making music from a younger age back when I would post rap videos to some of my favourite songs and posting them on my YouTube channel.  I started taking it seriously a couple years ago this being my third year.  When I create I like to make music the listener can vibe to, that’s something I feel I’m really good at. How has your upbringing impacted your style of music today? In what ways were you affected by your environment? Growing up I would listen to Flow 93.5 a radio station based in Toronto and they would play and still play a lot of HipHop/Rap music as well as R&B, so from young it’s all I would really listen to and it grew on me.  Even watching BET’s 106&Park, every Friday they would have “Freestyle Friday” and I always looked forward to see what these different rappers had to offer and thought it was cool.  You could say that’s what initiated me getting into music and then the people around me from family and friends would also listen to the same stuff. Tell us about the theme behind “Lights Off” and what motivated you to create this record? Ok, so “Lights Off” is an R&B type of song and what started it was I was sent a beat pack by the producer Martin Sole also from Brampton, I heard the build up of the beginning and immediately knew what type of song I was going to create, when I heard the first beat drop I said to myself this song is going to be a banger and started writing immediately.  I wanted to bring that sexy type of vibe and feel I did a good job doing so.  The song was recorded last year and I didn’t want to rush to release it until this year. If you could feature and collaborate with any charting artist right now of your choice on this single who would you select and why? If I could collaborate with any charting artist right now on this single  it would hands down have to be Tory Lanez, not just because he’s my favourite artist but because he’s really good at what he does, the passion and drive he has when making music, I know he wouldn’t disappoint if he hopped on this record with me. What are some challenges you’ve faced in creating “Lights Off”? I can honestly say I didn’t really have any challenges creating the song, the only thing is how long it took me to actually go and record the song after I finished writing it, but once I got into the studio and got it done I knew I created a new vibe. What’s next for you? What’s next is getting back into doing performances and getting music videos done so that more people can know about my music.  It’s been a while since I’ve done them as I’ve been working on my sound trying to find out what works for me and what doesn’t, but now that I feel I’ve found what works for me I’m ready to get back into it as soon as possible. • Kayla Nichols Releases A Compelling Story Behind Her Music

Kayla Nichols is a Blues, Rock n Roll & Instrumentalist based out of Redding, California. Her sound is the fusion of old-school blues, rock and pop. It has a cutting, electric driven vibe that is inspired by past and present blues rock & roll icons: B.B. King, Gary Clark Jr., Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, The Black Keys, Greta Van Fleet, and Janis Joplin. Through her music, she desires to give people something real and relatable that will lift them off the ground and infuse them with hope and freedom to live life to the full from how loved they are. Kayla Nichols released an incredibly intriguing short film documentary that tells the story behind her album. In the video, you see Kayla Nichols going through the creative motions of the project while also proceeding to give dialogue on the inspiration and meaning behind the project. This was compelling for me because it showed me a side of the artist that was more authentic and raw opposed to fabrication and transparent. She allows you to see the vulnerability behind the artistry and it was magnificent and drawn my attention to not only the documentary and Kayla Nichols but the music itself. Everything about this felt more organic and it’s something I wish more artists would do. The vibes of the video had a grunge aesthetic which is similar to the style of music Kayla releases. The video was a brave display of courage and authenticity with a raw, insight on the thoughts and feelings of Kayla Nichols alongside the passion she has for her music, and the way she takes the feelings and thoughts of her listeners into consideration. For me, this makes Kayla Nichols an incredibly relatable artist and I’m excited to see what else she has to offer us. If she spent meticulous time crafting together a documentary, what else could she possibly execute? A hidden gem, Kayla Nichols is more than artist but a creator who we need to be on the lookout for! Watch Kayla's short film here or below, and keep scrolling for our interview with Kayla! What motivated you to create this documentary? I’m singer, songwriter, and a musician, but I’m a storyteller at heart. All of my songs come from my own story and have stories hidden in them. I released my blues rock and roll album “Illusion” in the fall of 2018 and knew at that time that I wanted to create a short film telling my story behind the album. I believe our stories are the greatest things we have to offer each other. And the story of how this album came about is pretty wild. A lot of people see me play live and think I have years of experience playing electric guitar and writing blues rock music. But the reality is that I never planned to play electric guitar or to write music in the rock genre. I picked up an electric guitar two years ago and blues rock just came to me. I had no education or experience writing or playing it. I actually didn’t even know I was playing blues. It just happened. And it happened during a really pivotal time in my life where I decided to embrace and express my real self apart from what people might think about me. But a lot of people don’t know these parts of my story. They just see me play live or hear my music and assume I’m this really educated, experienced musician who never feels afraid. I wanted to create a short film that would not only tell my story but would show people my humanity. I wanted to show people that this album came out of one of the most challenging times in my life where I chose to overcome fear in a massive way. And I wanted to show people that this album was a dream I decided to go after even though I felt really disqualified because I had no education or experience in it. We need to share these parts of our stories because people need to see and experience that who they really are and what they have to offer the world in being fully themselves is valuable and they need to see that their dreams really are possible despite their circumstances or what they feel disqualifies them. Were there any challenges you’ve faced during the creative process of this documentary? Definitely. I experience challenges every time I create something. Besides filming the clips, I did everything for this short film. I put together and edited the clips and transitions, recorded the story, and reproduced and remixed the soundtrack in it. This was the first time I did a project like this on my own and I had a blast doing it because I got to step into creating in ways I haven’t before, but it took me about two months to finish it.  When I first started it, I only had studio clips and concert clips. Trying to tell my story with only those clips felt like I was only giving people the “accomplished” and “successful” part of my story with the album and that wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to give people the whole process. I didn’t want people to just see where I am now. I wanted them to see where I started. That was when I got the idea to film clips in my apartment. I knew those clips would tie it together in the sense of showing people my real life behind the scenes - the life they don’t often know about when they see me on stage. My friend Brettley Ruggles filmed those clips for me and as soon as I started working them into the project, my vision for the film started to come to life. Telling my story was also challenging and vulnerable. I decided I wasn’t going to script it out. I wanted to be as authentic as possible which to me felt like sharing it without planning out what I was going to say. I set up a microphone in my room and hit record. I definitely felt myself wanting to stop and write out what I wanted to say in a perfect way but I knew that wasn’t what I was supposed to do. Another challenge I faced was that I started promoting the release date for the film and then I found out my grandpa was in the hospital so I flew out of town to be with him and my family. I got back into town the day before the film was supposed to be released and I didn’t have it finished. But some of my fans were telling me they were excited to see it, so I worked on it all day the day I got back so I could get it done and have it released on the day I promised my fans. Knowing you come from a musical background of classic rock n roll, how did you aim to incorporate that into the video? That was definitely a challenge, haha. I knew the soundtrack needed to have an emotional feel because my story was going to be vulnerable and emotional. I knew it would sound super weird to share it over an upbeat rock and roll song. So I looked around for royalty-free cinematic tracks and found this one called “Live Beneath” by Cerulean Skies. I loved the feel of it so I got the stems and decided to remix and reproduce it. I added drums and orchestral strings into it and decided to bring my lead guitarist David Harris in to record electric so we could incorporate some elements of blues and rock and roll while keeping it the emotional, cinematic track that it is. I also aimed to show my fans the process of creating a rock and roll album through the way I ordered the studio clips in the film. I didn’t actually tell the story of creating and recording the album with my instrumentalists, but I used the clips to show that we recorded it in an old-school way, the way rock and roll legends used to record stuff back in the day. You see he whole process from start to finish: setting up, sound-checking, and recording. I also decided to throw in the studio capture of us recording “Illusion”, the highlight track from my album, at the end of the film so that people could hear my story first and then immediately get an experience of the music I just shared my story about. I wanted people to feel like they were a part of my story and a part of the recording experience - like they were on the journey with me and in the room with me when it happened. How would you describe the feelings you felt during the process in creating this? I mostly felt excited and passionate. I’ve spent the past year recording and doing shows and concerts. I decided to take a break from shows in order to do this short film and it honestly felt really refreshing and energizing creating something behind closed doors again. I feel so alive when I’m creating, so creating this film was definitely a really fun experience for me. What’s next for you Kayla? Right now I am focusing on planning and producing music videos for several songs from my album. I have ideas for three of them and am starting to plan those out. I’m also starting to focus on writing and creating songs for a second album. I currently have five songs in the works and this album is definitely going to be next level compared to the one I just put out. It’s also going to have a slightly different vibe than what I just put out. I’m sticking with blues and rock and roll but I’m taking it in a completely different direction. I’m going to incorporate and show a lot of creativity in this album that people haven’t really seen from me before. I don’t think people are going to expect it at all.
