- T.Ro Brings The Caribbean Heat With “You Are The One”
Born and currently residing in the UK, this Caribbean raised artist goes by the name of T. Ro. Spending most of his childhood and teen years growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, his West Indian roots has had a tremendous influence on him as an individual and an artist. You can most definitely hear it in his music. Within recent years, T. Ro decided to take a serious approach to building his musical portfolio. He likes to describe his genre of music as ‘World Music’ which is something everyone can listen to but if he had to break it down it would be a combination of hip-hop, afrobeats, and bashment. Currently running his own collective of artist under the name NoTellin Entertainment, they are expecting to release new projects this year and 2020. Tuning into his single “You Are The One”. This one gives me reggaeton right out of the gate. Then there’s this beautiful wind instrument that surprises you throughout the record. I love how this song makes you want to dance, sway, move in some way shape or form. I have a true respect for Caribbean sounds and this delivers all those wonderful feelings. The lyricism is on point and his vocals are beautiful! This is one of those #repeat tracks a banger for the summer! Listen to "You Are The One" here and get to know more about T. Ro below! Hello! Do you mind introducing yourself to our readers? I'm T. Ro, I'm a recording artist, I was born in England and I grew up in Trinidad. I'm 24 and I have a son and an amazing partner. It's funny how I got into music, as I really never had anyone pushing that focus in my family. I make music because I love the art form and I enjoy it so if I can make music that others can genuinely enjoy that will bring me joy. I've been engaging in a lot of hip-hop music although I've still been finding the need to focus on my influences in other genres such as dancehall, reggae, as well as the the rising modern afrobeats music. Being heavily influenced by these different styles of music and to add on my caribbean upbringing, together it has made it possible for me to diversify my style and my music. I've been recording since 2015, when I first recorded with Bitterbunch, with Jaythaillest on the production, since then it's been a slow climb. God must have had plans because he helped me meet my bro Talè who is as enthusiastic about making music as I am. Since we've linked up we've been making fresh songs, a lot of which have been scrapped and others haven't been released due to a matter of timing. What about your genre of music do you love the most? What I love the most about my genre of music which in this case I will say is the modern afrobeats music, is that it doesn't matter what language you speak or if people understand you or not, there will always be people who get up and dance or people whostay to themselves and bop to the music. The good vibe always spreads, that's the thing I love the most about it. What is the backstory on the song “You Are The One”? The song "You Are The One" was recorded, produced and engineered in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa. My friend Talè being from Lusaka thought we should go out there to promote a few songs we had in the stash, so we ended up going under a team ting. When we got there we linked up some local artists and the vibes got to cooking and before we knew it we were working on the song along with a few others. We decided that of all the songs we recorded there that "You Are The One" was the one we should shoot the video to, and so said so done. It all happened quite fast as we were there for 3 weeks, but we made it work. The song includes 3 zambian artists, Talè, Majik Links and T-Wizzy, as well as Nigerian Artist King Femz. The song was produced and engineered by Majik Links. What type of artists are under your collective? The artists under my collective all have their own diverse sounds and styles, from afrobeats and hip-hop artists like Talè to more heavy hip hop artists such as MainStar. The collective doesn't limit to just recording artists either, we have on board our very own DJ, Selekta-DJ M.R.P and even our own fashion stylist and artist Wisdom. Our most recent releases have been very hip-hop focused as that's just the mood right now for us. The collective is in its early stages of growth so at the moment we have myself an afrobeats and hip-hop recording artist, Talè an afrobeats and hip-hop recording artist as well as one of our producers. Also included are MainStar a hip-hop and dancehall recording artist, Wisdom a Hip-Hop recording Artist and fashion stylist, Selekta-DJ M.R.P one of our own producers, as well as our DJ and Photographer. Where can readers find your music? - Maineyy Releases “Cold Shoulder”
Maineyy is a former ESPN, High School All-American who played for the university of Louisville under the Clemson Tigers where she arguably was a part of the most decorated recruiting class in the history of Clemson. Maineyy was born and raised in New Jersey before relocating due to school. Maineyy is quickly crafting her niche as a recording artist in the music industry. Maineyy released her debut single titled “Cold Shoulder” and it began with an delicate melodic introduction that reminds me a lot like the invitation to a Daniel Caesar song. “Cold Shoulder” is this relaxing, cool-breeze, lo-fi hip-hop song that doesn’t focus too much on augmentations and dynamics yet delivering a feel-good vibe we can remember. “Cold Shoulder” has a poetically inversive lyrical display from Maineyy and it’s highly attractive. We were keyed into the music due to how extravagantly lush the production was from the simple beat to the contextual vocal delivery. “Cold Shoulder” isn’t a song to become hype to or cry to, it gives off the whole “Light an incense and sage” type of vibe with a flourish smell appearing from a candle and the natural vibrations from the music. Maineyy is an aesthetically pleasing artist and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next as she seems to be an artist with many surprises up her sleeve! “Cold Shoulder” is a magnificent way to display an intricate style to the realm of hip-hop and we’re absolutely here for it! Listen to "Cold Shoulder" here and get to more about Maineyy below! Hello! Can you tell our readers about yourself and your music? Well I’m from New Jersey born and raised. I’m well known for my former status playing basketball and always made music behind the scenes. It wasn’t until 2014 I released my first mixtape and then couldn’t capitalize off of it because I was still tied up with College and school. Those were my darkest times because I wanted to fully just pursue music then but knew it wasn’t my time. What are some challenges you’ve faced in your career so far? My main challenge would really be promotion. I real just love the process and energy it requires to create a song and just simply want to release it and hope the world can feel it just like that...but it takes a strong grind to stay consistent and create a campaign to grow your fan base and get others tuning in to what you have going on. Tell us about “Cold Shoulder” and the meaning behind it? Cold Shoulder is dedicated to and inspired JT...they know who they are..Cold Shoulder is a song about knowing you can provide a vibe and energy for someone or something special and they’re playing hard to get. It’s about wanting to control someone so you can simply make them put their guard down, just to give you an opportunity to show what you have to offer. This isn’t only referring to love but even someone who maybe applying for a job, trying out for a team, and they keep getting the “thanks but no thanks” even the everyday independent artist can relate to receiving a “Cold Shoulder” whether it’s from radio, labels, or even blogs..it’s a cold world nonetheless How does the title reflect the theme of the song!? The feel of the song definitely is a chill and sad vibe. It has a blues and jazz feel to it with the background vocals giving the production a soothing touch. Anyone who is feeling blue or just wanna chill vibe should definitely press play on “Cold Shoulder” it’s an icy track to say the least What’s next for you? I’ll be releasing my second single April 26th on all platforms. This one is the total opposite from Cold Shoulder because its uptempo and definitely is something that can be played in the clubs this summer! - Halle Alice Is Calm, Cool And Collected On Her Latest Single “Kehlani”
Halle Alice showcases her impressive vocal capabilities on the track “Kehlani”. Halle’s true diva style is on full display; the sultry track allows Halle to demonstrate her vocal range, hitting impeccable high notes, flawless whistle notes that float effortlessly in the back ground, and the fast staccato verses flow with ease. There are very few female artists that have showcased this vocal ability; Whitney Houston being one and Mariah Carry the other, both with an impressive five octave range, Halle has clearly demonstrated she is one of the few! Halle’s angelic voice paired with the smooth R&B/Hip Hop beats is a recipe for a hit track! Halle grew up in Mid-City Los Angeles where she developed her singing/songwriting craft, navigating everyday life as a growing woman of color. This young artist keeps her song rewrites to a minimum, living in the moment, recording a collection of her thoughts and emotions in real time. Halle’s faith driven music echoes a clear and purposeful message in hopes to inspire youth and women of color like her. Get to know Halle Alice better and stream “Kehlani” today. Listen to "Kehlani" here and get to know more about Halle Alice below! Hi Halle! Thank you for speaking to us. Can you tell us what it was like growing up in Mid-City Los Angeles and how you got into making music. Well, my family has also always kind of lived in this neighborhood. My grandparents moved here in like the 70s, so they’re really LA natives. A lot of the music I grew up with was stuff that my parents listened to or that I danced or stepped to found on my own. I would be dance battling on my school play yard and all of sudden have to bust out with whatever moves I had and the songs would always be fresh, fly and new. All types of hip hop. The rhythms of that early 2000’s sound filtering into LA has influenced my current phrasing in my music. My grandpa is also a jazz musician so I grew up with music in my household and got into music really young. I took drum classes and stepping in Leimert Park which was right down the street from my school at the time, Marcus Garvey School, over on Slauson. I also spent my fridays over at LACMA watching my gramp perform a lot when I was a kid. Growing up my mom wanted me to sing cause she was a really great singer. So of course she put in the Angelic Kids choir at West Angeles at like 6 or so which to this day influences my sound a lot. MUch of the music I make is a direct product of some of the best at home Legends and vibes. LA put me on to true 90’s R&B, Rock music, Gospel, that late 90’s/ early 2000’s pop sound. All of that is my favorite. Snoop Dogg to Maroon 5 (who went to my highschool shoutout! haha) to Kendrick [Lamar] ,[2] Pac, heavy Gwen Stefani, heavy love for Jhene Aiko. Just a few LA legends. My little area, mid- city is a cultural hub. YOu have orthodox jews, black families like mine that have been here since the 70’s, newly married interacial gay couples, muslim families, latinx fmailies, everyone. It’s great because it’s just so diverse and centrally located. You said you keep your song revisions to a minimum. When you initially started writing Kehlani, what were you intentions for the song? Originally when I got Kehlani, my friend who goes by Sol Sauce, was showing me a bunch of production and he said grab what you want. I heard that beat and just was like “my ex looks like Kehlani”. I don’t know why but I just thought that sentence was funny and it fit over the beat and then I took the beat home and didn’t touch it for like four weeks. Next thing you know Valentine’s day was rolling around and I just wanted to put out music. I was just in the spirit to do it, I hadn’t put something out in over a year. I honestly just wanted to do it as a gift to myself, so I sat down and I just wrote Kehlani. It took me start to finish maybe about an hour to write and I recorded it that day and had it sent to get mixed like the day after. Mind you this is like 6 days before it got put it out. I just called my manager and was like I just wanna put something out. She goes “ahhhh… Ok.” and we started planning. Writing that was just me really saying what I felt. I was thinking about my growth at that time, and trying to figure out if I would be dating through the next steps of this my process. I need to focus inward and on my grind most of the time haha. But I was definitely pressed about ever finding a pattern, which is so silly because I’m 20. “Kehlani” was also kind of my conclusion that my type, what I’m instantly attracted to is not necessarily what is best for me because I haven't reached my best self that would really know what is best for me. Until I reach that part of myself I need to remove myself from anything that is not already in my calling, because I’ve been finding that a lot of things, situations and people are not for me. To anyone who hears my single “Kehlani”, I hope it brings you gratification, clarity and awakening. Hopefully with the music I’ll be releasing will inspire some thought provoking revelations. I really just want to get the people thinking, especially my younger generations. How does it feel when you finish a song and are left with the final product? I never really feel like I’m done working on a song because I’m always ready to change little things about the song, I’m always tweaking the details. Even when I release a song, like the two latest singles, I’m always thinking about the performance and the longevity of each of these songs, and the life that they carry. Who are some artists that inspire you and affect your style? When I first started writing music my mother would also say make sure it can be performed live so I’ve always associated live performance with top level artistry. Live performing embodies the ultimate connection between artist and listener. Can my style of story telling be told in person right now? Thats what I ask myself and honestly, it absolutely has an affect on how I write and deliver the song. I want to always make music that can be performed in a club, festival, and stadium. Some artists that have inspired me in this way… there are many people to be honest but when I think about the impact and art of live musical performance in this day I think about artists like Beyonce. Other artists that inspire me because of how they connect with their audience are Janet Jackson, Kehlani, Diana Ross, Jill Scott, Travis Scott. I hope that no matter what I am singing, I hope it has that feeling that sweeps you off your feet that delivers with fire energy in my performances. I just hope to have that open mic feeling in a stadium presence where my audience feels like I’m just up close talking to them and we are vibin at a house party What can we hope to see from you moving forward? Moving forward you can expect to hear a lot of variety, experimentation, collaboration, and a lot of reflection. And I think that people should get ready to think about the way we view artists and artistry more. You can expect to hear my black voice. The way that we view the voice of the black artist and the impact that we as creators have, will keep evolving but I plan to use my voice as much as I can while I have it because I’m a black woman first and I have many things to say for myself. Ya know? I hope people also realize that I will be using my voice to enact change and make a difference and to not be afraid of question me, question policy, question this world and to really dive into the music and dissect what I am saying because every time I jump on the track I’m going to say something to you and that’s really it. So expect to really fall in love with this real music shit because I hope to fall in love with each and every person that decides to share in this journey with me. For a feel good track stream “Moment Last” today on all major streaming providers. Listen to "Moment Last" here and get to know more about VBRTR below! Hello! Thank you for chatting with us. Can you start by telling us a bit about your latest Single “Moment Last”? Moment Last is the first song we ever wrote together (although it wasn't our first release). This song goes way back to when Jono was still in music school and we wrote the song together for his final assignment. Years later we dug this song out of the vaults, and redid the beat to include punchy synths and a 80s Miami Bass inspired drum track. With the help of genius sound engineers Benny Steele and Trevor Case, we were able to accomplish that sound with the right balance of classic and futuristic. The 80s homage is also apparent in the single artwork, drawn by the very talented Kenna Plume. Can you tell us what VBRTR stands for? Actually, 'VBRTR' isn't an acronym! We came up with the name during a time when it was fun to drop vowels. With vowels, you get 'VIBRATOR'. This isn't meant to be sexual (although people are welcome to interpret it that way). Our priority is to create good and strong vibrations that move you, and we try our best to reflect that in our sound. What does your creative process look like? As a habit we write first before producing anything. Lee (our lead vocalist) will have a song about 80% written, then we take it to the studio and arrange a rough demo with some basic programmed drums and scratch recordings. If we're blessed with a lot of time, we might sit on that demo for months before we take it to 100% completion. In the case of our most recent single, we waited almost four years. That said, we've also had really good results from working on a shorter timeframe (about 2-4 weeks) depending on the needs of the project! What do you get from playing your music to live audiences? I think there's definitely a high that comes from being on stage, and connecting with people from a place of vulnerability. It's a sort of confirmation that the music we've worked so hard on is actually working, or not working in some cases. So, spiritual highs aside, playing to live audiences is a great opportunity to test our unreleased music. What are you looking forward to most in the coming year? This year we were blessed to have been accepted to showcase at Canadian Music Week in Toronto! There is a submission process which we were fortunate enough to get a slot. Canadian Music Week is the biggest industry music festival that combines both up and coming artists and established artists. All that being said, it is a huge opportunity for us to spread our craft and perform our brand of Future R&B. Wish us luck! - Tino Cruze Showcases His Artistry With “KSOW”
Tino Cruze is a 26 year old from Iowa who started making music when he was 17 years old. His uncles were rappers so he tried to follow their footsteps and his dad also played the keyboard so music was always in his family. He currently resides in the breezy state of Washington! Tino Cruze released his latest single titled KSOW (Kickin’ Shit Our Way) and this was the musical reassurance we need to say Tino Cruze is up next! The way he lyrically delivers this song is impeccable. His flow is absolutely fire and I’m a huge fan of it. Nowadays, there’s not many lyricists in the rap industry. It’s something we’re lacking heavy. And by lyricist, I’m not talking about somebody who just creates consciously intellectual raps but an artist who knows how to appeal to the mainstream rap crowd by curating infectious and catchy lyrics that doesn’t necessarily have to be eye-opening or motivational, but also keeping a balance with a metaphorical intelligent approach. “KSOW” is an iconic record I can find myself adding to my “Car Ride” playlist because the beat itself is perfect for a speaker banger. Who doesn’t love “Feel-good” rap music where everything feels raw and uncut but also contagiously impactful? It’s charismatic nature propels forward through the music and gives Tino Cruze a unique star appeal we feel will be an advantage for him in the long run. “KSOW” was a perfect song to showcase the level of talent Tino Cruze has as an artist! Listen to “KSOW” here and get to know more about Tino Cruze below! What are some challenges you’ve faced in your career so far? The biggest challenge has been getting support from the people closest to me. I moved to Washington and everyone here showed me love but back home not as many people support like i thought they would Tell us about “KSOW” and the meaning behind it!? KSOW stands for Kickin’ Shit Our Way It’s the first time i actually got out of my comfort zone. I had a lot of fun making that song and a lot of inspiration from different artist What inspired you to write “KSOW” ? I had a friend that i featured on the song and he was going so hard with his music and his grind that it motivated me to do something different and step it up and that led to me making this song. I didn’t want to rap about having money and shooting and stuff like that because I’ve heard those stories plenty of times by other artist even some who don’t live that life. I wanted to keep it as realistic as possible. Do you have any key influences for your rap style? Definitely the kush and orange juice by Wiz Khalifa, dom Kennedy, curren$y and just other artist that taught me that i don’t have to rap about guns drugs money and violence. I looked up to a lot of artist who were talking about things that i could actually relate to in life because i could always listen to their music and it never got old. What’s next for you through 2019? Keep people listening and A lot of new music i plan to stay as consistent as possible. Building my fan base and actually getting people to support has been a major issue. What is the meaning behind “3am”? The name "3AM" is symbolic. It means to me the sacrifice of sleep an artist is willing to give up to perfect his/her craft. What inspired you to write this record? STRANGERS was actually created by freestyling. I was just in the booth playing around and said "My little secret, let's keep it hush. Girl, We both need this. Keep it between us" and was like "Yo, that's it!" and then just freestyled the rest of it. Who are some of your key influences and why? Chris Brown, because I used to get told I sounded like him in middle school, plus I just loved his work, and work ethic, Drake, because he always finds someway to make whatever he's talking about connect and you actually feel what he's saying. Musiq Soulchild, Because he's the prime example of R&B. He's smooth but has slick word usage making you think of things in ways you haven't before. (Ex: "And why must my arms feel so empty for what my heart still holds" & "How can love escape your grasp without you ever letting go?") Tupac, because he was real. After listening to Pac's music I vowed to make sure every lyric I spew is real to me in some way, shape, or form. What’s next for you? I'll just speak in to existence here. Success. This single gets going immediately, with the verse lyrics setting a tone of intensity. The lyrics themselves have an undeniable rhythmic quality, and oscillate between a quick punchy intensity and a slower swaggering quality. The beat and synthesizers set quite a dark and menacing tone which perfectly complements the lyrics. Listen to "Manic Martian" here and get to know more about J Doses below! Hey, thanks for catching up with us! First of all, would you describe your background and how you first became involved with music? Growing up i struggled with many things like school, social life and my mental health. My attendance at school wasn't very good feeling like it never was for me and didn't fit in with the social groups which created a lot of anxiety/depression for myself which caused me to become quite introverted for a long time, music has always been a huge part of my life always admiring the passion, drive and message the artists/rappers were trying to create, there's many artists music that have gotten me thru some dark places being able to connect to there music, realizing I'm not alone we all struggle and its how we choose to deal with those demons. I always felt like i had no purpose and i was floating thru life with no dreams till i realized music was my dream and passion and with practice, hard work and the vision i have for myself i truly can achieve it and create amazing music thru voicing my own struggles & demons for others to relate just like i did to the music i choose to listen to growing up. This music is my identity now like it always have been its shaped me as a person and has given me purpose in life to chase the dream i love and create my own light. I now can't wait for the life ahead of me pursuing this music endlessly and forever creating Have you always lived in Calgary? How would you describe the overall music scene there? I grew up in small town's in British Columbia as a kid till moving to Calgary at the age of 13, Adapting to the fast pace city atmosphere was hard at first but I've managed to find the calm in the storm within my music family and friends. The music scene is Calgary is constantly growing I'm still quite new within being apart of it but its been on the raise for quite sometime now always having local shows plus more and more know artists are coming to town giving more motivating for the locals to keep pushing for that dream, I'm glad i can be apart of such an supportive growing music community. What is your writing process like? How does all your music come together? I started writing music/poetry for therapeutic reasons i was never good at being able to catch my thoughts and write them down so thru creating music i was able to finally have something that i could focus on and helped me vent my struggles n demons into music. Writing music is like a puzzle to me, Piecing thoughts/rhymes together either in my head,on paper or in my cell phone, i use my raw emotions to create concepts or a feeling thru each line i write, my music has a message if you listen deep enough otherwise its up for interpretation for anyone to create there own thoughts of my views, struggles and opinions. Who do you think are your biggest artistic influences? Honestly i have so many that not all of them come to my head at once but i grew up listening to anywhere from eminem,d12, Dr Dre ,50 cent, classified, mac miller, limp bizket, wu tang clan, n.w.a, Jay Z and many many more. - The Radio Broadcast Releases Their New Hit Single “Broken Dreams”
From a chance run in at a local tattoo shop in Ohio, the duo that is The Radio Broadcast instantly connected over their passion for the alternative lifestyle, which translates into their music. The pair, Michael and Kristin intended to start a punk band but were unable to fill the void of finding a guitar player. Michael and Kristin reexamined their musical roots and through some trials and tribulations formed the sound that is what you hear from The Radio Broadcast today. The Radio Broadcast has released their new single “Broken Dreams”. "Broken Dreams" is an electro-pop tune filled with synthetic rhythmic beats that will give the listeners ears a cardio work out with its fresh energetic vibes! The Radio Broadcast has created their own lane with their music but channels influences from favorites like Crystal Castles and INNERPARTYSYSTEM. "Broken Dreams" has a dramatic opening that gains the listeners traction directly when they hit play. With their cutting edge alt-vibes, fused with their unique electronic instrumentals that will make them notable and recognizable, the minute you turn on one of their songs. The song unleashes a throbbing synthesized beat, paired with catchy lyrics sung through VocalSynth, this is an electric circus of sounds. We can't wait to hear what The Radio Broadcast releases next! Stream “Broken Dreams” here and explore this boundary pushing group today! Check out the new exclusive interview with The Radio Broadcast below! Hello! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us! What are you hoping your music gets across to listeners? Hello! Thank you for inviting us! Whether you Love it or Hate it remember the time and dedication that was put into this music that you are now listening to. We are all on our own path and what may be fuel for one may not be fuel for the next. Take a step back from your life and try to view the world from a different perspective. We do our best to produce quality material but in the end quality is defined by you. Your thoughts and feelings towards our music is on you but please remember what we have created was from the love of our souls with positive intent to help connect like minded individuals. What is the creative process like for you both? Does the instrumentals come first or the lyrics? It all just kind happens when inspiration hits. We dont have any set musical schedule when it comes to the creative process and we don't have any certain set guidelines or formula that works. When the time is right the lyrics flow and the music grows. Kristin writes the lyrics and some times she has several things already written and they just happen to work with a track that we are currently working on or something that has been sitting. Other times she listens to the music we are currently working on or working with and words just start to flow. As far as instrumentals or the actual bulk or meat of the track they are always written independently from the lyrics. We haven't ever written a piece based on lyrics. Michael writes a vast majority of the music or instrumentals and there isn't any certain set of guidelines here to follow either. We both write what we feel when the time is right. Just curious, what were the tattoos you both were getting when you first met? Actually Michael was a tattoo artist and the time and Kristin just so happened to be his client. Kristin ended up getting a kanji or Chinese symbol for the word graceful. Where do you musical influences come from? There is a lot of inspiration and musical influence to be found in the world and for us as far a music goes there are two major electronic groups that have stuck out the most and helped shape our minds to develop the sounds of The Radio Broadcast and that would be Crystal Castles and INNERPARTYSYSTEM. We love the DIY approach IPS takes when it comes to stage lighting and we love their heavy and raw electronic feel. With CC they come across sort of mysterious. We love their punk attitude in the electronic scene. We really like their lofi gritty electronic sounds. We study these bands and many others to try and better ourselves as a band. We try to align our selves with similar sounding artists but we do our best to remind our selves that other bands and musicians are just like you and I and to tune into them as a reference or inspiration and not as a guide. But as crazy as life can get it is always a good idea to take a step back and take a little time out and emerce yourself in nature and tune in to the frequencies of the planet, clear your mind, and realign yourself. Once your mind is clear and your body is well tuned it will be a lot easier for your creative ideas to flow into more comprehensive complete ideas. What are you hoping to see happen for your musical career this year? We started out the year building and pushing our online presence and we are continuing the effort to grow our online fan base daily. There is still a lot more work to do but we are hoping to build a larger online audience. We have already started to see results so thats a plus. We realise how big of an online market there is for musicians and it is almost as big if not bigger than the "real life" presence of the artist. With the way life is today for an artist to not make use of the online market is foolish. Its another work load thats for sure but if you can build your online presence you will definitely feel rewarded. So we are hoping to grow our online fan base and connect and meat with like minded individuals. - Get Ready To Be Blown Away By The Creative Fusion Of Dusty And Moira
Creative and eccentric is an understatement when describing the ground breaking duo, husband and wife, Dusty Santamaria and Moira Ichiban. They met on a full-moon night in Portland, Oregan, fell in love and ran away together to the Southern California desert. Since then they’ve masterfully created two full albums. The first debut album titled “Love Under Will” was released in 2017 and took Dusty and Moira on tour all over the United States and Europe. Dusty Santamaria and Moira Ichiban have officially released their second album “Innersexion”! Their eclectic avant-garage sound sets them apart from other artists and keeps them delivering transcendent hits. The deep chemistry between this duo is evident in their newest single “Apocalypse Now And Later”. An upbeat composition with poetic vocals. As a vocalist, Dusty is spectacular but the femininity and harmonizing that Moira brings is radiant. I believe that this song is the story of Dusty and Moira escaping the ending world together and creating something beautiful while they can, the last lyric in “Apocalypse Now And Later” is, “To love is to create something together”. Be sure to listen to Dusty Santamaria and Moira Ichiban’s full album “Innersexion” and I highly recommend you give “Apocalypse Now And Later” a listen and create your own interpretations! Listen to full album "Innersexion" here and read the full interview with Dusty and Moira below! What’s the meaning behind “Apocalypse Now And Later”? On a superficial level, “Apocalypse Now and Later”, is just a songwriter’s trick of combining two opposing things; in this case, Francis Ford Coppola's great film and the name of a trashy corporate candy. More substantially though, it’s an observation of the apocalypse culture we all currently live in. The etymology of the word “Apocalypse” comes from the Greek “apokalupsis,” which means an uncovering, a lifting of the veil, or a disclosure of something hidden. That song consciously opposes the lingering hangover of the literal Christian interpretation which manifests culturally in the popularity of dystopian fear narratives and end of the world scenarios. We feel that the stakes are too high to keep reinforcing anxiety. Thoughts are causative, especially on a mass scale. The apocalypse doesn’t have to mean the total destruction of humanity. It can also be the enlightenment of the entire planet. Where has been your favorite place to perform? We love house shows and DIY spaces with strong community values. We enjoy playing any place that lends itself to potential collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Would you consider creating a music video for “Apocalypse Now And Later”? Yes, absolutely! We plan on making a music video for every song on Innersexion. The marriage of video and audio is absolutely integral to the way folks experience new bands these days. It’s an exciting way to merge artistic mediums. We made the music video for “Digital Fuck Talk” on our own with a phone camera, learning how to edit as we went. The whole process was a ritual for transformation. With “Apocalypse Now and Later” we’d love to collaborate with an artist or multiple artists who see video as their primary medium. What musical artists do you look up to? Gosh, that list is long and potentially endless. We like a lot of different things for a lot of different reasons. We admire the Portland band Dead Moon a lot, not only for their music but also for their fearless approach to embodying and succeeding in the DIY lifestyle. Fred Cole was just a knockout lyricist. Plus, like us, he and Toody were a married couple who were typically older than the other bands in their scene. We’ve also really been digging a record called “Book of Changes” by L.A.’s Entrance. We hope to play a show with him sometime. With such a romantic background can you tell us what inspired you to run away together? It was Instinct, really. We spent a weekend together in Albuquerque, New Mexico and we both felt that there was something we needed to learn from one another on a karmic level so we said yes to instinct and ran off together. What's next for you through 2019? We began the year with the symbolic representation of rebirth seen in the “Digital Fuck Talk” video. Now we need to tend the garden we’ve planted to ensure that the seeds grow healthy. The rest of the year sees Innersexion being heard and noticed by as many people as we can share it with. We’re looking for more collaborators, to “find the others” as Tim Leary used to say. We want our “Voodoo It Yourself” organization to be more like “Voodoo It Yourself Together”. Ultimately we want to reach more folks and move forward in our work of using art for liberation.
