- Hear It First: Bad Animals Release Their New Single "All The Shakes"
Bad Animals is a high-octane punk rock band from Seattle, Washington. Their personnel is made up of members from other prominent Seattle acts. The Remnants – a long-time Seattle based act – contained musicians Wallace Brown and Cory Johnson, and after 15 years of playing together, they have reformed under Bad Animals. Lead guitarist Eric Stallard from the prominent Seattle ska group It Gets Worse and a former bandmate Lucas Chalcraft on bass round out this dynamic quartet. We are excited to release their brand new single, “All The Shakes”, the title track from their upcoming full-length album. The song begins with an intense and powerful drum beat and guitar lines that weave seamlessly through one another. The vocals and their energetic delivery are both fresh and somewhat nostalgic, recalling Seattle punk bands I loved in my youth. The guitar solo is tastefully done, and much appreciated in an era in which guitar solos are becoming more rare. The song builds to its highest point near the end, with an immense guitar-centric outro that will blow your hair back. It is clear from the intensity of “All The Shakes” that we can expect great things from Bad Animals as they release their upcoming album at the High Dive in Seattle on March 26th, 2019. Listen to "All The Shakes" here and get to know Bad Animals below with our exclusive interview! It's great to chat with you guys! What's the story behind the name “Bad Animals?” At the core of our group we're a bunch of lifelong friends getting to play music together. We were crazy youths who had a lot of fun and have been through all the crazy ups and downs of life together. A couple of us still harness that crazy reckless energy, and Bad Animals seemed fitting for the four of us. Being from Seattle, obviously punk rock is a big part of the music scene there. Who are the artists that you look to for inspiration and influence? Seattle’s punk scene is thriving now as it always will. Not only are we fortunate to play often with killer bands, but we also get to hang out with the wonderful humans in them. We love Question? No Answer, Burn Burn Burn, FCON, The Deadset, and so many others. Every time we play out I feel inspired by the bands we see. What's the meaning or message behind your newly released single, “All The Shakes?" All The Shakes is about a death in my family and the drive to my moms house that day with my best friend Kevin. The less literal part has advice/ conversations with my mom intertwined. Can you talk a little bit about your overall writing process as a band? I write most of the music at home and try to get a general idea of the song's structure, but nothing’s ever complete until we all get together and actually build and finish the song as a band. The music wouldn’t be possible without each of us contributing. What's in store for the future of Bad Animals beyond your upcoming album release? After the release we’re all very anxious to get new songs going and keep building on what this band is. In the end we're four lucky guys getting to do something we love. - Album Release -- LA's Band Of Liars Delivers New Album "The Truth" And We're In Love With It
Band Of Liars was formed by front woman Rae Rae Jensen and her long time friend Shane Soloski. The band naturally formed together as they were best friends in the music industry. All it took was a divorce, a tragic affair, some acoustic guitars, a few drinks being shared between some good friends who decided that the only coping mechanism available to them was to write a bunch songs about all the drinking and divorce that surrounded them. As a result, a new album titled "The Truth" was made. The music is equal parts of sublime fun and introspective sadness, both with a gritty truthfulness that is always lurking right below the surface. When you hear the songs on this album for the first time, or if you are lucky enough to see the band perform live, there is no escaping the undeniable feeling that you are hanging out with your best friends. The members of Band of Liars on the record also include Dean O’ Leary on Guitar, Michael Martinsson “Swede” on Guitar, Chris Lawrence on pedal Steel and Steve Wilson on Drums. Their album “The Truth” really captivates the feeling of sincerity and honesty as the project begins with their first record “Pickin’ Up The Pieces”. This vibrant song immediately begins with an attractive melody from the acoustic guitar alongside lyrics that seemed to be reflective of the heartache the band has probably experienced in the past. It’s a beautiful tune that made us fall in love on impact. The next single to follow, “Shoulda Known Better” was an interesting lyrical interpretation for us. We believe it touched based on the hookup culture that’s so apparent in todays society. The possibility of catching feelings when simply hooking up with somebody can be so common now-a-days. We also believe it possibly went deeper in lyrical connotation and put emphasis on the personal affair experience a band member has experienced! Nonetheless it was a great song with a great story to tell. Track 3, "Hard Times and Alcohol" continued the up-beat and country rock soulful grit, however we noticed something special by this time of listening. It’s the compelling storytelling in the tunes that’s gravitating us towards the song. Each song thus far has felt more like a personal diary of the artist rather than just a song to sing. You become more connected with the band due to this vulnerability. That same vulnerability shines through with the next tune “Favorite Song” feeling more sensitive and subtle rather than driven and energetic. They pick the energy right back up with the next single “Mamma Hold On” and this song is our personal favorite due to how relatable it was. A song dedicated to the woman who gave birth to you, your mother. It’s an appreciative song for how strong, loving and hardworking our mothers are. “Mamma hold on, I'm going to buy you that house, the one you always talked about, the one you always dreamed of". These are the exact emotions we collectively feel towards our mothers who have all done so much for us! It really helps you appreciate her worth a little bit more. With emotionally conveyed songs like “93 In November” , this song was projected with a strong passionate vocal resonance in Rae’s vocals, how can we not appreciate how this band is giving us everything in one? Their next two songs “Trouble” and “Drunk Drunk” gave us powerful belts with that fiery southern charm, seemingly to be their niche in the music they release. Band of Liars released a pleasant music video to their single “Trouble” in which the setting and environment takes place in a party scene where Rae sees a man she finds magnifying and appealing. This man has this “bad boy” aura to him that reels her in. The chemistry between them both was undeniable and she was so lost in the moment and she didn’t care regardless if it was a bad idea or not. The video was fun, charismatic and cute. The personality of Band of Liars was highly presentable and that was the best part about it! Band of Liars attracted us as a fan due to their incredible songwriting skills, fierce guitar riffs, addicting tunes and powerful vocal belts credible to Rae Rae. If you’re wondering why the voice of Rae Rae sounds so familiar, itt’s probably because she was the female vocalist featured on the hit song “Smile” by Uncle Kracker. After spending several years working with Detroit Music Royalty and touring the US and the south with Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker and Ty Stone it was finally time for LA native Rae Rae to record her debut country rock album with West Coast grit and southern soul made right here in Los Angeles in Van Nuys at Blue Suede Studios. Producer Shane Soloski has been relentless at developing Rae Rae and the band for this next chapter of success and they now have a bangin' record and band that is an undeniable representation of great songwriting and production. This is just the beginning for The Band Of Liars. You can the band live TONIGHT at The Federal Bar NoHo, doors open at 7PM and cover is $5 or on March 31st at Genghis Cohen on Fairfax. Listen to the full album here and get to know a bit about Band Of Liars in our interview below! Hey guys! Great to chat with you. Tell us a bit about the band! BAND OF LIARS - was formed by Front woman ( me ) Rae Rae Jensen and my long time friend - Shane Soloski - who is also the Producer of our new album entitled -THE TRUTH - and plays in the band as well on Bass. The band sort of just formed naturally between some of our very best friends in music, All it took was my divorce, a tragic affair and some acoustic guitars, and lets just say more than a few drinks being shared between some good friends who decided that the only coping mechanism available to them was to write a bunch songs about all the drinking and divorce and hard times that surrounded them. We all work on a weekly basis just to make ends meet and keep our musical aspirations alive. It’s not easy. And we are lucky enough to have each other. The members of Band of Liars on the record are ~ Rae Rae Jensen, Shane Soloski- Bass, Dean O’ Leary- Guitar, Michael Martinsson “Swede” - Guitar, Chris Lawrence- pedal Steel, Steve Wilson, Drums. When writing this album, what was the most challenging aspect you guys had to face? The most challenging thing was knowing what we were up against. As they say, ignorance is bliss. We knew what we wanted the record to be, but when we started it was just me Shane and an idea. No record label, no management, no team, not even a band. We wanted to do a record that was every bit as good if not better than what the major labels were turning out but we had no machine in place. All of these big acts on the radio have the best writers to work with, best producers best musicians and pretty much best of everything at their disposal. How do you compete with that? Luckily Shane has an amazing studio -Blue Suede Studios, Van Nuys CA. -and we were able to work on down time to do the recording. And as luck would have it, we have some amazingly talented friends who believed in what we were doing, so it went from me and Shane to what became - Band Of Liars- Everyone sacrificed so much. I had just gotten divorced, and Shane had just started with his studio, we would have been happy to even have a shoe-string budget to work with, but the truth is that we were working totally without a net. We all spent every second of our free time making this happen, and we all did it out of friendship and a love of music. I know that sounds cliche, but it’s really the truth. So knowing how good we wanted it to be and having no money to try and make a record that would stand up against what the big labels were putting out was definitely the hardest part. We have funded as much as we can on our own including going to a NASHVILLE at the end of last summer 18’ receiving a great response! What inspired you to name the album “The Truth"? Our music is equal parts sublime fun and introspective sadness, both with a gritty truthfulness that is always lurking right below the surface. We were not making this up - “The Truth” is The band of Liars and The Band of Liars are “ The Truth” And when you hear the songs for the first time, or if you see us perform live, there is no escaping the feeling that you are hanging out with your best friends. Another reason kinda inside joke for “ The Truth “ is my Affiliation with Ty Stone & the Truth who I sang with for many years- we were great together and Ty got me many of my big opportunities -one of them being that I am the female vocalist featured on the hit song “Smile” by Uncle Kracker. After I spent several years working with Detroit music royalty- touring the US singing with Kid Rock Uncle Kracker, and Ty Stone it was finally time for me to record my debut country rock album. And as fate had it the truth again smacked me in the face ! There really was no other name better to call this record than “ The Truth” How did you select “Trouble” to be the leading single of the album? One night, Music Video Director - Anna Kovaleva - was hanging out with her girlfriend in Hollywood Boulevard and we ended up in a nightclub called “Loaded” (which doesn’t exist anymore, unfortunately). There were several indie bands playing at that night, and one of them was us. They had so much fun during their performance, that when we finished, Anna- immediately rushed to the stage and told us that she would like to shoot a music video for us. And because She was creating her production company and portfolio she offered to do it for free. And we said said “Yes.” They chose our song “TROUBLE” . Her team of people also created a beautiful story following the band and me talking about our past and history and our influences they were very generous to us and filming us behind the scenes kind of like a documentary on the band building momentum before the video got completed. It took some time to finally shoot it! It took us more than a year to make this happen. Firstly, the band didn’t have the master of the song ready. Again we didn’t have money to help in anyway (even if They didn’t charge us any director’s fee, we still needed some money for production). So, Anna started following this band for more than a year and she was almost ready to give up on us, But she believed in us so much she was determined to finish this project - and that finally happened on , on Oct. 14, 2018, we did it! And released it the same day as the album And now, this music video is on YouTube! Which songs on “The Truth” are the most meaningful and impactful to you as an artist? Well definitely my song “Mama Hold On” is about my mother and the pain she went thru working as a single mother and raising us to be so strong and resilient- she’s always been a huge supporter of my music she was once an amazing beautiful singer that was so close to making it her self - I come from a musical family and grew up surrounded by music some of the best musicians in Los Angeles my oldest sister was signed to Motown going up - we were all in a band together I grew up doing shows with my mom and two older sisters, She eventually gave up and put all of her faith in us we wanted to do it anyway and when I realize I wanted to sing and write music my mom was one of the first reasons why I decided to take this journey of my own. All I really want is to take my mom by the hand and say -we did it ! I work every day at my career to try and fulfill my family‘s legacy that is the one driving force that still keeps me going. “Picking Up Pieces” This song was written in the most devastating time of my divorce I would drive out to Venice Beach to write with amazing songwriter -Steve Sulikowski. As devastated as I was, I knew I had to put it out on paper “Picking up Pieces” was literally me picking up pieces of my life. When hear this song it tells the whole story of what happened and how my marriage ended and how sometimes life throws you a curve ball and it’s actually the best thing that ever happened to you - A blessing in disguise. What's next for the band through 2019? Well 2019 is the year that we continue to figure out how to get to the next level without the machine behind us. Everyone thinks making a record is the hard part. Getting people to hear it is the really daunting thing. We currently have no idea how to do this, none of us went to school for marketing or worked in advertising or have friends who are big time booking agents. But we figured out how to do what we feel is an amazing record all on our own, and we will figure this out even if we have to lie a little to get The Truth out. We will go back to Nashville and continue to try to find representation. Holding it down in Los Angeles. Shane has been relentless at preparing me for this next chapter of success in which I owe so much to this type of friendship and old school development does not exist anymore I’m so thankful everyday he never gave up on me, and we now have a record and band that is an undeniable representation of great songwriting and production. This is just the beginning for us I like to think of us as a well oiled machine which is a combination of hard work struggle and what beauty can come out of the sadness. - Hear It First: Jonas Brøg Premieres His Brand New Music Video "All Across the Sky"
Jonas Brøg is an emerging songwriter who spent years working behind the scenes as a producer for other artists. After many years of sitting behind two speakers, Jonas was itching to start creating his own music. He found the process of drumming immensely therapeutic, and this reignited his love for creating music. His first two singles, “Tell Me Why” and “I Think of You I Cry” were successful on Denmark's biggest national radio station, P4, as well as Spotify's “Indie & Alt” playlist. Today, BuzzMusic is excited to premiere Jonas Brøg's brand new music video, “All Across the Sky”. Beginning with a simple beat, the soothing undertone of this song is immediately brought on by the soft vocals, building slowly to the soaring and expansive chorus. The instrumentation and backup vocals beautifully complement and support the vocals throughout the song. It is the type of song that is so well paced and can so easily create a relaxing and blissful atmosphere for the listener. With the premiere of this new single, we are excited to see what the future has in store for this up and coming artist. Check out Jonas Brøg's "All Across The Sky" here and get to know Jonas in our exclusive interview below! Hi Jonas! Great to chat with you! Would you describe your background and how you got involved with music and songwriting? I was born into a family of creative souls, I grew up in wonderful Copenhagen, where my parents, grandparents, and most of my family are deeply rooted in classical music, so there was no escape, but I'm the only guy writing and singing my songs. I live in Amsterdam now, since many years, but I do miss Scandinavia more and more, and I go back a lot. I never really chose to create music, just always did it. It's my way of breathing, and my tiny microscopic way of trying to contribute something good on earth. Who would you say your biggest musical influences are? How have they helped shape your career in the music industry? Snow Patrol, Johnny Cash, James Bay, Leonard Cohen, Lewis Capaldi, Jamie Lawson, James TW, James Arthur, The Black Keys, Tom Waitts. I’m a singing drummer, writer & producer, and I think that the rhythm in the different melody-languages I listen to a lot, is very important to me, but maybe even more important to me is if it feels real & honest, story-wise, but also in tone of voice. The most meaningful thing I know, is when I touch a feeling in people listening to my song. As a maker of melodies, and sharing my stories, I feel it's all I really have. Describe your general approach to songwriting? I only have one rule as to writing songs for myself; the story has to be 100% honest, and whenever a line sneaks in that doesn’t feel skinless honest, I throw it away. All in all I throw most ideas away, but once in a while a melody comes out of nowhere I guess, and it’s stuck in my mind. That’s when I know I might be on to something, melody-wise. Once I have all sections of the song more or less finished, then the production-journey starts, and that’s usually dreadful, as in, it takes forever with most of my songs to get anywhere near ready to play for a strangers ear. I’m an extremely slow producer for my own songs, but it's something I have to do. I stopped writing and producing for other artists, and now I'm only creating songs as therapy, writing about what I'm going through. It started about 3 years ago, I got to know the dark side of life. I was born happy, had a happy life until then, never really understood the concept of people being depressed, off course I've had challenges, but never did I feel completely dark inside. Now I know the dark side too. Some songs are a little less slow done that others, but most productions are taking forever to get some sort of ready. ‘All Across The Sky’ took me about a year, in a little more than 60 different versions. But once it’s done, it’s done, I have peace, I move on to the next story I need to express. Is there a particular meaning or message behind your new single “All Across The Sky”? ‘All Across The Sky’ is about the process of closing a chapter, moving on to a new journey. I salute people who have the courage to throw around their lives, leaving a situation that isn’t doing them any good anymore, to move towards better times. I'm in a transition mode myself at the very moment, and with hope in my heart, as the good saying goes, when one door closes another one opens. What does the future look like for you, Jonas? I've never felt more fulfilled than now as a maker, releasing my own songs, standing for who I am, I've never been more open, sharing the stories about the real things in my life. I feel brutally vulnerable like this, but crazy thankful for the reactions I get from people who listen to my songs. What I write now gives me a world of difference in meaning, success or not, though struggling with the dark side, I feel like I'm on my way home. - Maio Releases Articulate Single “Siempre Ayer”
Maio released his newest single titled “Siempre Ayer”. A highly fruitful and textured record that’s perfect to pass time throughout the day by listening to a colorful yet simple and contextual single. I was a big fan of the instrumental beat. If you really focused on the backtrack, it had various of multi-elemental sounds to create a nice diverse single. With these unique sound effects, alongside your classic drum kick, they create the base and foundation for the song. You hear these deep sounding synthesizers that’s similar to the sound of a bass guitar. With orchestral and classical instrumental music slightly playing in the background, Maio was able to deliver us the soul and sensual behind “Siempre Ayer”. Besides the exotic-like backtrack, Maio has a voice articulation quite unique from most. It’s like he sings his words in cursive lettering so the pronunciation of certain words sounds to be more tropical. His voice has a soft-like texture that surrounds the stylistic approach of delivering it. “Siempre Ayer” just brings nothing but a relaxing aura and vibe around me. It attracts me to peace and serenity while secluding yourself from the outside world and into the dream-like single. - Matt Relevo Doesn’t Need To "Try" When Emphasizing Lush Pop!
Coming from a musically inclined household where both of your parents are equally talented, there’s just no doubt that you would grow into a musical prodigy known to make hits! It will be no different for singer Matt Relevo who inherited those traits from his mother who loves to sing and father who was a multi-talented musician. From Long Island New York, Matt Relevo is planning on taking the music industry by storm and we think he might accomplish that with his soulful pop single “Try”. Co-produced by Justin Scott, GrizyLace, & Jared Tyler, “Try” reminds me a lot like the style of Bruno Mars, a popular artist nowadays who is breaking charts and numbers with his stylistic blend of classic and contemporary R&B and pop! The irresistible sound of soul in “Try” alongside the sweet melody caters to you good music lovers who are fiending for a tune that sounds timeless. “Try” is the type of lush song you can hear at any venue, at any time, and at any setting, and instantly fall in love with it all over again. The magnetic force Matt sets between his song and his listeners was an intelligent artist decision that he unintentionally doesn’t know he created! Matt showcases elements of smooth-sailing vocals alongside a solid pop rap flow during his verses which gave me the idea that Matt Relevo is a versatile artist in his own lane who we will most likely be hearing a lot about. Having an arsenal of catchy pop melodies and captivating lyrics to tell a story. Constantly spreading love, his goal is to reach the hearts of listeners with not only the music he creates, but with his character. Check out "Try" here and scroll further to find the artists personalized interview, where he the inspiration and meaning behind his new release! Growing up in a musically inclined household obviously inspired you to do music! But do you have any other fun hobbies you enjoy doing? Besides music, I love editing videos and working on anything involving film. I believe film is another art that has the power to reach the heart’s of people as much as music does. So when both are used together and done right, they can produce something beautiful. Tell us what inspired you to write the single “Try”? My background is Filipino, and my girlfriend was born and raised in Venezuela. Growing up, that mentality that we have to be with someone of our own race or culture has always been in our heads. This is what inspired me to write Try. If you’re able to create a music video alongside the catchy single, do you have an idea on how you’d want the visual to look? If I was able to do a music video, I’d definitely work around the concept of bringing two people from different backgrounds together. One of them will have trouble taking the next step because of their peers. I would love to have fun shots throughout the video like dance choreography and a party to complement the feeling of the song. What is the meaning behind “Try” ? The meaning behind “Try” is basically wanting to break that mold from past generations that said you should only be with someone from your own race or culture. What’s next for Matt Relevo? I’m honestly just going where the music takes me, as cliche as that sounds. Every single song I put out are special to me, so I make sure I showcase them properly and then I figure out when I want to release new music again. Music videos and live shows are absolutely something I’m looking forward to. Connect with Matt Relevo on social media: Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube #BuzzMusic
- Desiree Choy Releases Heartfelt Single "Rewind"
Desiree Choy knew she wanted to be a singer since the young age of three where she was barely able to start learning how to play the piano. Desiree sang in musical theatre and jazz throughout her childhood and eventually found her love for R&B. Always in constant cultivation of her craft, Desiree tends to be inspired by moods and her native city of San Francisco. An almost lo-fi vibe picks up on the piano until the smooth classic R&B vocals start to sing. The choice of a lo-fi piano is what starts the mood off in Desiree's "Rewind", along with the slow claps that eventually come in. From the beginning, the setting is placed in our minds that we are in San Francisco in a dimly lit hotel room or penthouse. Stunning and smooth, Desiree adds harmonies while staying in groove with the song. Nostalgia goes hand in hand with "Rewind" where Choy also infuses a slight throwback to the 2000’s R&B. This song will leave you in a good mood and will have you relaxing wherever you’re at. Nothing but good vibes come from this song and Desiree’s knack for singing and songwriting. All together a perfect song for people of all ages and genre preferences. Add Desiree's "Rewind" to your Spotify playlist, and be sure to read the artists personalized interview below! Hi Desiree, It’s great to meet you! Can you tell our readers a little about yourself and how you got into music? Hey Buzz Music LA, it's nice to meet you guys too. It all started when I was three in ballet class, when my mom and teacher both realized I was drawn not to class, but the piano where the accompaniment played. From that moment I started playing the piano and singing nonstop. Singing was always my first love and the thing I always did, whether it was musical theater or jazz growing up. It wasn't until recently that I felt inspired to discover my own sound and make original music. What drew you to R&B? Who are your biggest musical influences, that have helped shape the artist you’ve become today? Having sung jazz as a younger adult, I always gravitated toward R&B because I just loved how it sounded, and how it feels to sing it! I have a raspy voice, and I love that soulful vibe, so it was a natural fit. Growing up, I was obsessed with all the power house vocal divas like Mariah and Whitney. I've loved Alicia Keys since Day 1, and she definitely inspires me to make upbeat music with live, talented accompaniment. What is your favorite lyric from, “Rewind” and why? My favorite lyric probably is the most simple one, "Don't think about it too much", which has been found in many a song before, and for good reason. It's a good reminder to not overthink things, and to live in the moment. :) What do you hope your listeners will gain from your music? I hope listeners will be able to relate to the words I write, and also to be inspired to come into any situation with the angle of positivity. I want to make feel good music, and show listeners happy/uplifting music can also be sexy and non-cliche. What inspired your song and what is the meaning behind “Rewind”? The song is first about nostalgia for great times of the past, and then recognizing that the past situations no longer apply. The next part of the song is about not necessarily reliving the past, because that's impossible, but rather getting to that great place again, if just for a moment. It's trying to see the good in a situation, and not dwelling on the fact that things have changed. And because there were such amazing times before, both characters know that kind of bliss is achievable. What can we expect next from you Desiree? I'm going to take it a bit upbeat, and show the other elements of my voice! My next song is what I call the theme song to my life, and it's upbeat, fun, and playful. Though I'm still finding my sound, I realize that the process is really such a beautiful thing and I'm loving every minute of it. Stay tuned ya'll, and thanks so much! - Sean Michael Gives Us An Aggressive And Fire Delivery With New Single “Plan B”
Sean Michael vicious wordplay coming in contact with his vivid imagery created a legendary fusion that he calls “Plan B”. Sean Michael puts the pen to the paper and allows his flows and music to tell his special story, unique to him. A dark, twisted, and very real look into the world of loss, depression, and alcohol abuse. The beauty is in the brutal honesty the New Jersey native injects into each song as he paints a picture of days better left not spoken about. If you listen to “Plan B” and see past the trendy beat and addicting flow that doesn't seem to miss a single measure or beat, you will understand how lyrically contextual the record is and how it serves as a meaningful purpose for Sean. The hook says “Everything is burning down around me”. A repetitive line that was more than enough for me to understand that Sean Michael channels his passion into his music. Most rappers, or artists in general, have a life story and some choose to allow the pain they feel in everyday life to be ammo for their explosive music. The determination, self-love, worth, and fire in “Plan B” were all noticeable in apparent fashion due to the vocal delivery by Sean Michael himself. Add some meaning to your Spotify playlist with Sean Michael's "Plan B", and check out the artists interview below where he gets into the meaning behind the track. Hey Sean! Great to chat! When was the first moment you knew music was something you wanted to do? Likewise! The first time I knew music in general was something I was interested in was back in 5th grade. I’m 29 now so maybe that helps put things into perspective. Rap wise though, I left the theater after watching 8 Mile and immediately thought I was the next big battle rapper haha thats not a joke.. Needless to say I put my battle rap ambitions aside and picked up poetry and found a way to integrate hip-hop into my subject matter. Do you have any specific rap influences? If so who and why? Well clearly after that story you can deduce that Eminem was a major influence of mine, but other than Eminem I am massively influenced by Method Man, Redman, DMX, 50 Cent & Lloyd Banks. I think Eminems skillset is unmatched honestly, his rhyme schemes are absolutely wild and I always wanted to catch up to him.. I have yet to achieve that goal, but maybe one day haha the others I mentioned were just on constant rotation growing up, I think I have the entire Hunger for More album by Lloyd Banks memorized, and I still bump all of them regularly when I am in need of inspiration. For example while writing my first EP I listened to The Blackout, Muddy Waters, and Get Rich or Die Trying on the regular. Describe to us the meaning behind the song “Plan B"? Plan B really outlines the years I was in school. This song is a middle finger to all the people that told me to always have a back up plan so I wasn’t “let down.” I’m let down now, I’m depressed now, so let me do me. What inspired you to write this? Over those years I developed a drinking problem, went to AA, had negative $450 in the bank at the time I wrote the song, and literally dropped out of school to pursue music after 3 years of attending. My life was absolutely crumbling around me and I was losing friends left and right. My first producer passed away, my DJ died in a motorcycle crash, and a couple friends OD’d and I was having trouble coping with it. So “everything is burning down around me” was exactly how I felt. All of my songs stem from real life experience, no exaggeration, you either like it or don't but this is me.. What’s your opinion on the current state of hip-hop in the music industry? I think hip-hop is in a transition currently, but in a healthy state. I think theres a TON of great music coming out from new artists like Joyner Lucas, Dave East, JID, Jay IDK.. etc.. I believe Hip-Hop is the most important genre currently and the most influential to the youth, but it’s also the most dangerous contextually. Theres a lot of artists glorifying drug use and theres an epidemic of kids dying while using drugs, so I hope that changes. I’m not personally a fan of any songs talking about Lean or glorifying drug abuse because a couple good friends of mine have passed from addiction so I really don't have time for that. What's next for you through 2019? 2019 will be filled with a TON of music, I am putting out a new song a week the whole year. I have my first official single “Margiela” coming out in May so I'm super excited about that! I’d say thats really the launch pad, and the rest will follow suit. I also have 2 EPs coming out, one in the fall, and one before the years out. Hopefully by the first EP we will have some shows lined up, I’m really looking forward to seeing where this year takes me! Does your upbringing affect your music in any way? To be completely honest it was boring as hell for a long time growing up, but the energy out here is really picking up, especially in Va Beach. Everybody in the local scene is really banding together and trying to make a push for the whole region. It's really dope. But my upbringing definitely has a lot to do with my music. My parents gave me a good set of morals, and I think I definitely show that through my songs. I generally have a pretty positive vibe.I also had plenty of time growing up to work on my music, and my family has always been super supportive of me. Describe your song “Download” to us? What’s the meaning behind it? "I'll be with ya when you hit the down(LO)ad" It's my promise to my family and friends that I'll always make sure they're okay, and I'll always be there. I maneuver through a lot of different topics on the verses, I really go wherever my mind takes me while i'm writing. But there's a lot of wordplay in there you might not catch unless you read the lyrics. What inspired you to write “Download”? Well the hook on "Download" is mostly inspired by my wife and son, and my anxieties about missing them when i'm out on the road trying to chase the dream. The whole song definitely has a loose theme of keeping it real, and holding it down for your people. Do you have any musical influences? If so who and why? I have a plethora of musical influences, I really believe an artists style is made up of their own unique blend of musical influences and life experiences. For me growing up I listened to a lot of classic rock and blues/soul with my parents, and a lot of rap and metal with my friends. For a long time my style was strictly old school 90's beats, and really vibey hiphop, but I slowly got into more popular music because popular music got better. If I had to narrow it down and name a few of my main influences I'd go with J Dilla/Slum Village, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, and Mac Miller(he really opened me up to a lot of the best old school hip hop artists). What’s next for you Chewy? I don't even know, hopefully something huge, but we'll see where life takes me. I'm definitely putting the work in, writing/recording/doing shows/shooting videos constantly. Prepare for a whole lot of material coming from me. I'm building up momentum right now to drop my first project, and making as many good connections as I can in the industry along the way. Thank you all for helping me out along the way. Much love! - Lankford And Alson Release Emotional Single “Melt With You”
Lankford is the stage and recording name of American singer-songwriter and composer Matt Davis. He was born and raised in Alaska, and currently resides in central California. His style has been described as “Very calming, and reminiscent of Bon Iver or a stripped down Of Monsters and Men”. Producer, Alson (Lars Hofstra) was born and raised in The Netherlands, now lives in Valencia, Spain. With over10 years of producing and DJ experience, he has had performances in several countries. The style could be described as combining rhythmic bass with uplifting melodies. Together, the Alson and Lankford duo has formed a bond over their love for creating emotional and passion filled music. “Melt With You”, Alson and Lankford's latest release is definitely the first of many tracks as this creative relationship expands and finds its way to a broad and worldwide audience. Lankford's voice is so comforting that you feel a sense of belonging. The duo welcomes you with open arms into his hazy and heartfelt single. The lyrics are highly poetic and inversive, which is something I’m a personal fan of. Lankford obviously tells a story through his sentimental and passionate delivery of lyrics and -the beat Alson delivers gives elements of that electronic pop, yet settled down with a melancholic melody. Lankford and Alson shivers you with a chilling resonance that floats through the entire tune like a duck on water, however, we sink through the magnetic song and find ourselves not only drowning in the song but drowning deep in thought. We loved the feeling we received while listening to “Melt With You”. The numbness and breezy atmosphere curated the perfect vibe for us at the perfect time. Melt in Lankford and Alson's new single here and get to know more about the duo below! Hi Alson and Lankford! We are loving your new song "Melt With You"! Talk to us a little bit about “Melt With You”, what was the meaning behind this song? Hey, thanks! “Melt With You” is a collaboration between Lankford and Alson, a Dutch producer. We met on Instagram in October of 2018. The song is about the difficulty of maintaining relationships and melting with society when dealing with self-doubt, social anxiety, depression, or other illnesses. It’s about hoping people will love you through your worst. Originally it was an acoustic song called “Melt” released solely by Lankford in October of 2018. But when Alson heard it he was inspired to collaborate. We renamed the song “Melt With You” Lankford, how was is growing up in Alaska? Can you tell us a little about the music scene there? I miss it, especially my friends and family, but I do not miss the cold! There are some great bands in Alaska. And the venues are fun. Lots of bars, coffee shops, and the occasional back yard bonfire. Everyone knows everybody, and the summer nights never end. Alson, What was it like collaborating with Lankford on "Melt With You"? We followed each other for a while on instagram. Then when he came up with his release melt, I absolutely loved it. He sent the stems over and I starting playing around. I never thought it would end this way.. we collaborated on that and we got a record deal. Working with matt was a nice experience, and new for me too. I never worked together with a folk singer songwriter, but I am really happy with the end result. I think it’s a unique mixture of both very different genres. Can we expect more collaborations in the near future? Yes, definitely. We have already begun working on a few others. How do you hope people perceive this song? The beautiful thing about music is one song can mean something different to each individual person. We hope it just resonates with the listener in a positive way. Hopefully gets them to add it to their favorite playlists and share it with friends. What is the message you want your listeners to understand while listening? Originally this was a song about Lankford’s personal struggles, but after receiving phone calls from friends and family, we realized the message is much broader. Its about unconditional love. And that means something a little different for each listener. Any exciting news you'd like to share with us? We are really excited to announce Alson and Lankford’s single “Melt With You” was just signed to Lowly Palace. You guys can find it on their social media links. And soon it will be released on Trap Nation worldwide. It’s our first time working together, and its the first time being signed to a major label for either of us. We are excited to see what the future holds. - Heather Grey Gives Us “The Answer”
There’s just certain rappers who has this way of allowing their legendary aura shine through in the way they flow and deliver. You instantly remember these specific lyricists and you begin to anticipate their next release. Some great examples would be J.Cole, Kendrick, and Drake. However, there’s a new face in the game and a rising rap star who goes by the name of Chuuwee who delivered his effortless bars on a detailed and well executed beat produced by the musician Heather Grey from Utah. “The Answer” doesn’t fit into the same category as those aggressive trap records that lack substantial meaning do. Instead, it has a relaxed aura but contains lyrics that have quality material behind the wordplay and inversive punchlines. The beat is subtle and showcases a melody from a variety of light instrumentals, such as the bass guitar. The rhythmic motion can be credible to the drumming you hear during the hook while Chuuwee is still projecting his consistent rap. An iconic rapper alongside a multi-talented producer are the perfect ingredients for a unique hit such as “The Answer.” Catch Heather Grey's "The Answer" on Spotify, and remember to check out the artists exclusive interview below! Besides producing, do you also get behind the mic Heather? No, I don't, it's not really my place. I stick to the piano, drums, sampler, & let the music speak for itself. How would you describe your style? That's a good question, & a little difficult to answer because I've tried to approach each project I've done differently so they all have a pretty different sound. But generally my style is hip hop, heavily influenced by boom bap & golden era producers/sounds. Lots of jazz & soul influences. I try to incorporate a mix of sampling with live piano & drums. Tell us a little bit about the single “The Answer” and what it means to you When I made the beat for "The Answer" I immediately thought of Chuuwee. I gave him essentially no guidance for the track because I really wanted to see where he would take it, & I'm so happy with how it turned out. The song is just soul & energy; it makes me smile. Anytime I've performed it live people can't help but move around, it's so fun to see. The song itself doesn't have a specific message or anything, it's just good music that's meant to make you happy, ya know? Coming out of Utah there isn’t really a heavy rap scene out there, how do you plan on shining light on the talent in that small town? Talent is something that Salt Lake has a ton of. It is incredible to me how many talented musicians & artists there are, & because of that the art scene in Salt Lake City is really thriving. Honestly I'm not focusing on really shining light on anything, rather working to promote comradery & growth within the city & culture itself. I think that is something that needs to continue to happen & that others will start to recognize the talent here as a natural result. What’s next for you through 2019? I'm just focusing on getting better, that's my goal with everything. I want to progress in every way possible. I'm working on doing visuals for past songs, as well as a full length project that hopefully will arrive in the summer. I'm working on performing more & meeting new people both in & outside of my city. I'm producing an EP for a good friend & very talented vocalist & I hope to get to produce more projects for others. So yeah, I'll be staying pretty busy. Keep up to date with the latest on Heather via the artists social media: Facebook Instagram Twitter #BuzzMusic
