- Alice Austin Asks “Could I Come Back”
Alice Austin's musical odyssey from Vermont to Los Angeles has been marked by her adaptability and diverse influences. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Shocking Blue, Jefferson Airplane, PJ Harvey, and Wanda Jackson, Austin has consistently showcased her exceptional talent and ability to traverse various genres. As a solo artist, she has built an impressive discography that seamlessly blends country, indie, and rock. Her 2022 full-length album, 'Goodnight Euphoria' is a testament to Austin's versatility and growth as an artist. This experimental take on a classic soft rock with a darker twist fuses various musical elements that Austin has honed throughout her career. Taking a stylistic hairpin turn from her 2022 release, Austin has recorded a full-length retro synth-pop album called “Break The Spell,” to be released July 7, 2023. One of the standout tracks on the album, "Could I Come Back," exemplifies her unique ability to create a captivating and evocative listening experience. "Could I Come Back" features poignant lyrics that express a sense of longing and introspection. Lines like "You feel like home, and that's the problem, baby. I don't wanna go back. I don't wanna go back in time" are delivered with a mix of vulnerability and resolve, reflecting the internal struggle of the song's protagonist. The song's instrumentation further underscores the emotional journey with its dreamy, nostalgic melodies infused with melancholy. As the lead singer of Black Sabbitch, the all-female Black Sabbath cover band redefining the genre, Austin has displayed another facet of her artistic expression. However, "Could I Come Back" demonstrates her ability to transition from the raucous energy of Black Sabbitch to the introspective and deeply personal artistry found in her solo work. This song is a prime example of Austin's ability to blend diverse genres into a cohesive and emotionally resonant piece. Alice Austin's illustrious career has been marked by her exceptional talent, adaptability, and ability to create unique and evocative music. "Could I Come Back," a standout track from her forthcoming album “Break The Spell," is a shining example of these qualities. Austin continues to captivate audiences with her versatile and introspective artistry, solidifying her place as a formidable force in the ever-evolving world of music. Welcome to BuzzMusic Alice Austin! Cheers on bringing the feels on "Could I Come Back," where you've expertly blended vulnerability and resolve within the lyrics. Can you share the inspiration behind the song's theme and how your personal experiences influenced its creation? Thank you, the vulnerability was definitely a main ingredient on this one. Sometimes a song comes out through stream of consciousness before you’re clear on its context in the physical world, and this is a perfect example. Since it was a collaboration with my dear friend and producer David Drouin, the theme was inspired by a variety of conversations about the cycles of heartbreak in love, music, and even the desire to play the game of life. To me, the question of “Could I Come Back” is really about how we all have access to healing beyond even the belief in ourselves. I find these lyrics speaking the truth in real-time. The instrumentation in "Could I Come Back" is marked by dreamy, nostalgic melodies infused with melancholy. How did you approach the composition process, and what elements were key in achieving the desired emotional impact? We wanted to create a soundscape embodying the nostalgia of coming of age in the 80s with the complex emotional spectrum of adulthood in the simplest way possible. On a technical level, the Roland Juno 60 was THE 80s synth sound, so naturally, we went there as the album's sonic foundation. It helped me to get into the flashback mindset while singing. It was so familiar but also completely new. "Could I Come Back" is a standout track. How does the song fit within your overall project's narrative, and what message or feeling do you hope listeners will take away from it? This song is an outlier for the record, so it is probably my favourite. It’s the closest sound to R&B I’ve ever done. Anytime you reach in a new and exciting way, the hope is that it shines through to anyone listening, and they can pick up on that. But it is within the synth-pop bubble we made for the whole album. The takeaway is intended to be a hypnotic time-space warp. It’s a familiar feeling, but you’ve never heard of it. Your musical journey has seen you explore various genres and styles. How has your evolution as an artist informed the writing and production of "Could I Come Back," and what new influences have you drawn upon for this song? Thankfully, I’m 100% all over the map with musical genre and style. I feel a sense of freedom and welcome challenge as currently fronting Black Sabbitch and have written albums of indie rock, pop-punk, cosmic country, psychedelic folk, and now retro synth pop. A cool full-circle story… When I was living on the east coast about 14 years ago, my first attempt at recording with Dave was a Cyndi Lauper song that never finished, partly because I didn’t have the vocal chops and partly because I moved to LA and didn’t get it done. So this has been a lot of satisfaction for both of us and has been such a blast. As you continue to create innovative and captivating music like "Could I Come Back," what can your fans expect from your future projects? Are you excited to explore new directions or collaborations in the coming years? Well, you never know… I am sure it won’t be more of the same, though. I’m dying to do a heavy rock record or hair metal/glam, but some acoustic folk music would also be nice. I can’t wait to start the next thing already. Instagram Facebook

- Ideofon Looks Into The “Bright White Light”
Norwegian alternative indie-rock band, Ideofon, has recently released their highly-anticipated new single, "Bright White Light," off their debut album Finder's Keep, set to release in the fall of 2023. The band collaborates with singer-songwriter Askil Fangel and producer Kevin Skaggs, aka SKAGGSY. It draws upon influences from genre-bending artists such as Radiohead, Bon Iver, Nils Frahm, and Thomas Dybdahl, as well as the serene landscapes of Norway. Ideofon's music uses ambiance and texture to create lived-in spaces to tell stories about isolation and alienation, with a hopeful sense of warmth connecting it all. The band's songs are recorded, produced, and mixed in various bedrooms and home studios in separate countries, with each element brought to the next level by Grammy-winning engineer Dale Becker. "Bright White Light" is one of the two tracks off the album featuring Bonobo, drummer Jack Baker, and "Fast Love" featuring London singer Rosie James. Ideofon's new single, "Bright White Light," is an immersive and atmospheric track that captures the emotional weight of a world of energies one can’t simply escape. The song opens with a delicate guitar melody that sets a pensive and introspective mood before Fangel's evocative vocals enter, conveying a sense of detachment and resignation. The instrumentation gradually builds in intensity as the song progresses; with the addition of soaring strings, pulsating basslines, and Baker's dynamic drum with proper the song creating a lush and expansive sound that mirrors the emotional journey of the narrator. Lyrically, "Bright White Light" is a poignant exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the difficult choices we sometimes have to make to protect ourselves. The chorus, with its haunting refrain of "I can't take it anymore," is a powerful expression of the narrator's inner turmoil and the sense of helplessness that comes with being trapped in a complicated atmosphere. Fangel's lyrics are poetic and introspective yet relatable, and the song's introspective themes are underscored by the instrumentation, which is both intricate and ethereal. "Bright White Light" is an impressive and emotionally resonant track that showcases Ideofon's ability to blend various genres and create a sound that is both intimate and grandiose. With its lush production, soaring melodies, and ocean-deep lyrics, the song is a testament to the band's talent and ability to craft beautiful and thought-provoking music. It's a promising sign of what's to come from their debut album 'Finder's Keep' and leaves the listener eagerly anticipating what else the band has in store. Fall into this one available now everywhere. Welcome to BuzzMusic Ideofon! Cheers to the release of your deep anthem, "Bright White Light," which blends rock, folk, and indie with a sweeping orchestra. Can you talk more about the musical inspiration behind this unique combination of genres and how it came to fruition? Askil Fangel: Thank you! We’re very happy to be chatting with you guys. My process for songwriting usually starts with a central idea, like a chorus melody, a beat, or in this case, a guitar riff — something that inspires and hooks me into expanding that idea into a song. Playing around with that main fingerpicked arpeggio turned into a structure for a chorus, and the rest of the song materialized from there. I never really “intentionally” decide on a genre. It’s more of a process of figuring out what instruments and sounds will help you convey the lyrics and emotion of the song in the best possible way. For this one, the acoustic guitar became so central that we let it drive the song, with the rest of the instruments supporting it. It naturally evolved into this Fleet Foxes-inspired acoustic rock thing, with some bossa nova-esque grooves for good measure. Kevin Skaggs: Thank you! It’s fun to have this time to talk with you. For my part, I’m kind of a nut about strings, symphony, orchestra, drums, horns, and anything that has that cinematic feel. Most demos I get from Askil are full songs. Some are recorded on an iPhone; others have production elements. So, when this bit at the end of “Bright White Light” came on - it had the feel of a kick-ass guitar stack mixed with a symphony. I imagined 12 to 15 badass guitarists on stage, all playing around a concert hall. Meanwhile, there is a 40-piece orchestra making this “full steam ahead,” Mad Max-style monster come to life, haha! Ideofon’s music easily lends itself to this sort of thing. However, Askil has figured out my patterns and starts collaborative conversations with lines like: “On this one, I don’t want strings.” It’s always a fun vibe; there’s never a bad idea. The album, Finder's Keep, was recorded, produced, and mixed in various bedrooms and home studios in separate countries. Can you speak to the challenges and benefits of working in this decentralized and remote way and how it influenced the overall sound of the album and the song? Askil Fangel: It forces you to think differently about everything. Your whole workflow becomes a lot less focused, in a sense. Instead of sitting down in a space like a studio for a session where the only goal is creating and where the limited time you have forced you to work strategically and efficiently, doing things from home lets you approach the work the way you want when you want. That gives you much greater freedom to try out lots of different ideas and shape the songs how you want. With the quality of plug-ins (software versions of orchestras, pianos etc.) that we have today, you can make studio-quality stuff in your pyjamas. It does have some downsides, however. One thing you lose completely is the collaborative moment-to-moment experience of making music with others in a studio, where things happen on the fly, song foundations are recorded live with several people at once, and feedback from other people comes instantly. You’re not going to get the feeling of playing in a room with others, which also comes through in the music. I think it might be a blessing in disguise for this album, though, since a lot of the album centers around physical and mental isolation. Not having a group of live musicians in a studio gave us a lot of freedom in experimenting with different sounds and genre influences — we used a lot more synths, effects, and odd time signatures than we probably would have otherwise, and the arrangements often don’t have much “rock band” instrumentation at all. “Bright White Light” is one of the exceptions. Kevin Skaggs: Working remotely allowed experiments to have an uninterrupted, free flow. I prefer to be in person versus remotely more often. There’s no substitute for the human experience of creating together. That said, I think it's fair to say that we are comfortable working independently. Each person gets to do their own thing. It helps that through this process of making music remotely, we’ve had a lot of FaceTime calls. We have gotten to know each other remotely and discovered that we have much in common. The more I think about it, the more it becomes strange that it’s been years - yet we haven’t met in person. I think we should change that this year. The lyrics of "Bright White Light" touch on the pain caused by a loved one's denial or willful ignorance. How do you balance vulnerability and honesty in your songwriting while maintaining a sense of hopefulness and warmth in the music? Askil Fangel: I think the secret lies in the instrumentation. I always find songs that sound ambiguous far more interesting than those that sound decidedly sad or happy. If a song’s not expressly telling you how to feel, you decide how you want to experience it yourself, and you form a stronger connection with it in the end. So even though a lot of the lyrics on this song and the album in general paint a pretty sad picture, we try to use a lot of driving rhythms and hopeful chord progressions to contrast that. If it was all string quartets and minor chords, I think it would quickly grow stale and clichéd. To me, it’s all about balance — nothing’s ever completely hopeless. Kevin Skaggs: It’s funny because my experience with the lyrics is slightly different. I’m more on the receiving end than their creation end. I see things slightly less melancholy, although these lyrics have this element. The music is like the universe suggesting a different or more positive path. Does that make sense? "Bright White Light" deals with themes of isolation and alienation. How have the current global pandemic and lockdowns influenced your creative process and the message behind the song? Askil Fangel: As we discussed above, being unable to play and create in a room with others has its downsides. I think it’s taught us some valuable lessons on how to make music in the future, though — you can still do the remote thing often. We know well how to do that now - me being in Norway and Kevin in Poland - it’s often the more practical approach. You can go into the studio and capture that live energy for the parts that need it, say the whole band songs or live orchestration. Therefore, I think we can make the most of both approaches and keep making songs where we can effectively experiment with arrangements and songwriting, just like we did for this project. What are your plans for touring to support your debut album Finder's Keep? Can fans expect to see you live in the near future? Askil Fangel: Absolutely! We’re based in Tromsø, Northern Norway, and most of our gigs are currently in that part of the country. Nothing’s been set in stone yet, though, and as soon as we’re able, we’ll take a little tour through the rest of Scandinavia and, with persistence and a bit of luck, maybe some gigs in Europe and the US. We’re going to keep working hard to make it happen. Stay tuned! Kevin Skaggs: I get a thrill seeing the footage from the concerts. I’d love to be in the audience or maybe go on stage and play a piano part or something. It would make for a fun trip to Norway! Instagram Facebook

Desarae Dee again proves why she is one of the most exciting artists in the Canadian music industry today. Welcome to BuzzMusic Desarae Dee chilly cheers to “Chilly Timing” What inspired the composition of "Chilly Timing?" Is there a specific story or emotion that you wanted to convey through this track? It’s great to be back again! "Chilly Timing" is essentially an ode to Winter and the “chilliness” that it brings. I’ve always wanted to create a song that emulates winter and ice in some way, and I'm glad I could do that with this song. I wanted to convey the “ice cold” and the “winter winds” that make the winter season what it is. "Chilly Timing" has a relaxing and mellow vibe, much like a winter holiday by a cozy fireplace. How do you create such a warm and comforting atmosphere through your music? Are there any specific techniques or influences that help you achieve this? That relaxed and mellow vibe has much to do with my chord progressions, tempo and sound choices, and mood when I created this song 2 1/2 years ago - which was relaxed and that moment. Normally before I write anything, I Channel my mood and the type of vibe I want to portray in my music. Speaking of sounds, you are known for blending different genres to create your own unique sound. Can you discuss the fusion of styles present in "Chilly Timing?" How do you decide which genres to incorporate into your music? "Chilly Timing" is a mixture of Jazz, Neo-soul, electronic and cinematic sounds. I’m primarily a jazz piano player, so the chord progressions will automatically give any of my jazz songs a feel. I put my heart and soul into my music, hence the Neo-Soul influences - mainly from the E. Piano and Rhodes sounds heard throughout. The cinematic sounds come from the string sounds that come in every so often to emulate a “winter winds” feel, and the electronic feel comes from the various synth patterns. The drums and the bass provide a syncopated, off-beat rhythmic feel as the winter season is unpredictable. You never know what to expect as someone who is spontaneous and unpredictable when it comes to playing. That’s an important part of my artistry. The use of vibraphone is a signature element of your music. How did you become interested in the instrument, and how did it contribute to the overall sound of "Chilly Timing?" Are there any other instruments you particularly enjoy incorporating into your music? Interestingly, you pick up on a “vibraphone” sound when in all actuality, it’s the choice of piano sounds - which most of the time is an E. Piano it Rhodes sounding pattern. E. Piano is the signature of the Neo-Soul part of my genre selection when it comes to my creative process, and normally, I will find a way to incorporate it into my music. I’ve always been a lover of a good Electric Piano sound! I love incorporating strings and horns, and of course, I love BASS - I write all my bass lines as the bass is super important in any song I write because it sets the tone rhythmically for any song I create. What are your plans for future releases, and can you give me any insights into what fans can expect from your upcoming music? All I can say for now is I have a couple more singles and music videos coming out this summer, and my supporters can stay tuned for Movement 2 of “Moments of Christmas” near the end of this year. I also had 2 shows earlier this month and one show coming up on March 31, which is the day after Chilly Timing drops! Instagram Facebook

Welcome to BuzzMusic Grey King; cheers to letting out your true feelings on "Let Me Love You" In "Let Me Love You," you explore themes of vulnerability and emotional healing. Can you share any personal experiences or inspirations that led you to write about these topics in your song? It’s a pleasure to be here, and thank you. For me, “Let Me Love You” was almost written like a love letter to me from my future partner. I’ve been through a thing or two, not limited to being cheated on and in a different situation, breaking up a relationship not because I wanted to or they wanted to but because it just made the most sense at the time, and this was me thinking about what I would want my partner to say to me. Once I had the idea, I just stepped into being the one to say it to someone else. The nostalgic 90s R&B sound is a prominent feature in "Let Me Love You." What drew you to this particular era and style, and how does it enhance the message you are trying to convey with this song? So, the 90s will forever and always have a special place in my heart. On top of that 90s, R&B has always been something smooth that will make you feel. When I think of the genre, I cannot think of a single song that doesn’t put you in your feelings. For “Let Me Love You,” in particular, felt like the best feel for the lyrics. I wanted the lyrics and everything else to be able to touch people’s hearts and feelings. You have diverse creative outlets as a singer, songwriter, author, and actor. How does your experience in these different fields influence the way you approach songwriting and the creation of "Let Me Love You"? The biggest one is that these things have taught me to step outside myself. I can’t just write me or for me over and over again. I need to see it from the other side or say it from the other side. This ability allowed me to write “Let Me Love You” for myself but step out and perform it for another person I have yet to meet. I always want my songs to come from me and speak to me, but I also want other people to listen and say, “I’ve been there, and this is exactly how it felt,” I think my creative outlets allow that. The lyrics in "Let Me Love You" paint a vivid picture of the transformative power of love. Can you tell us about your songwriting process and how you poetically captured these emotions? For this song in particular, I’m going, to be honest, the title came first, and then I spent two weeks just thinking… and thinking… and thinking about the message I wanted to put out there. The first thought was about self-love and learning yourself, which took me to the song. As I wrote it, I remember thinking, “What if someone was falling in love with you and trying to get through the wall you’ve built?” I’m big on words, so I dove into that thread, and three days after finally starting, the lyrics were finally done. I have to say I want to be romanced in the way that I hope this song evokes, and that is what I was trying to put out. With the success of "Let Me Love You" and your continued dedication to your craft, what are your aspirations for the future of your music career, and what can fans expect from your upcoming projects? I can honestly say I am looking into performing live more. The thought of being able to perform in front of an audience thrills me, so I am always on the lookout. I, of course, have more songs planned. As we speak, I am working on three more. Each one trying to get in touch with the 90s R&B feels that I strive for where I can. I also want to release an EP for my birthday in September. And I want to build a fanbase full of people that feel like my music speaks to them and continue to grow as a songwriter and a performer. Cheers to a vibrant drop with 'Just for One Night,’ which speaks of human connection and the complexities of love. Can you talk about the message you want listeners to take away from the song? Thank you! For me, the song is meant to be a fun story of that first meeting. With today’s dating scene, apps, and hookup culture, I think many people can relate to a one-night romance/stand. And sometimes, that first meeting and the single night get built up to be more than it was, but it can be fun to romanticize moments of taking chances. You've mentioned that you take influence from artists like Maggie Rogers, Paramore, and Tame Impala. How have these artists influenced your sound, and how do you see your sound evolving in the future? I’ve always admired how Paramore has evolved their sound over the years, and I think Hayley Williams is one of the best female vocalists of my generation. The balance between sweet and more rock-like vocals is something I hope to emulate in my music. Tame Impala and Maggie Rogers are both inspirations for me because they write their songs and can create their distinct sounds by producing their tracks. Each of these artists has taught me the importance of finding your sound and letting it change and evolve over time. You've mentioned that you want to be an artist known for your hand in both writing and producing. How has producing your music influenced your creative process, and how did it impact the production of 'Just for One Night?' Getting into producing has shaped the way I create and listen to music, which I didn’t expect to fall in love with as much as I have. These days, I listen to certain songs because I love the production and others for the lyrics, but the songs that excel in both take the cake for me. Being in control of the sound I want the song to have gives me a greater ability to match what I hear when the song first exists in my head. When creating ‘Just for One Night,’ I used a lot of reverb, pads, and sound design to create an atmospheric sound to try and capture the surreal feeling that an idealized love or infatuation sometimes has. Speaking of production, the music industry is still largely dominated by men, particularly in music production. How do you see yourself breaking down barriers in this field, and what advice would you give to women aspiring to produce their music? I feel like I’m still getting started, but as someone who actively looks for producers like me, I find the stats wild. A study done in 2021 by Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative shows how few women-identifying producers (on average, only 2.8% were women) and songwriters (on average, only 12.7% were women) there are in popular music. I believe every individual has their perspective and something new to bring to the table for producing and songwriting, regardless of gender. Still, we aren’t reaching the potential or breadth possible in an artistic industry if we don't have diversity. Producing your songs gives you greater control over your sound and what you can do. My advice to other women would be to start, jump right in and try to produce something you’re passionate about. There’s no better way to learn than to throw yourself in the deep end. Youtube tutorials and Google searches are your best teachers and reach out to other producers you admire or relate to. Communities do wonders for growth; we should all lift each other on this journey. Don’t be worried about finding your sound off the bat because it’ll come with time. That, and take risks in your sound. There aren't any rules. Just have fun with it. What's next for goodheart, and how do you see your sound evolving? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you can share with us related to 'Just for One Night?' I have a couple of projects coming out where I experiment with my sound, but I won’t get into too much detail there since they’re still taking form. I recently released a music video on my Youtube channel for ‘Just for One Night’ that I had a lot of fun creating. The director and I wanted to give a new twist to the song and play on the themes, and the response has been positive. In terms of evolving, you’ll just have to stay up to date with my releases through my Youtube and Instagram pages. Instagram TikTok

Welcome to BuzzMusic NYCK & Andrea Godin. Congrats on getting it in with “We Ain’t Friends,” which has a strong message about exciting relationships. What made you want to create a song like this? Whether people admit it or not, these are the kind of songs that grab people’s attention. These are the lyrics that people want to hear, and we were well aware of that. We like to reflect our reality into our music, and that’s what the audience gravitates to. That’s why this song has done the best out of all the songs on the EP. The production of "We Ain't Friends" has a melodic and hard-hitting feel. Can you walk us through the creative process behind the beat? Our goal for this track was to have an incredibly catchy hook without sounding “pop” and still have that dark hip-hop element. NYCK started with his super gritty verse. We then began working on my part in verse 2, and the melody and lyrics almost magically came to me as if I wasn’t even writing it myself - those are usually the best songs! We were initially a little stumped about what to do with the chorus, but once we got the 1, 2, 3, and 4 ideas, we knew it right away. The lyrics on "We Ain't Friends" are raw, with no strings attached. How do you approach writing such unapologetic lyrics? I don’t think any artist should be apologetic about their lyrics. After all, music is supposed to be art. Therefore there should be no boundaries. We know some of these lyrics are extreme, but that doesn’t mean they’re not relatable to a huge audience. We know they are, so we went forward with releasing this track. The chorus of "We Ain't Friends" talks about the concept of wild love. Can you speak more about this theme and how it relates to the song? “We Ain’t Friends,” in other words, means not being stuck in the friend zone. Whether it be lust, real love, or someone you’re in a relationship with or not in a relationship with. It can be applied to many different situations in that aspect. Your music often features a mix of electronic and edgy R&B sounds. How did you decide on the instrumentation for "We Ain't Friends," and what instruments did you use? We always decide what works best and what doesn’t work as a team. For the lead sound on this track, we used the Chip Tune in Nexus and layered that with the Moog Little Fatty. The Little Fatty also plays the bassline along with the 808s. These are the key instruments that made the song what it is! NYCK Instagram Andrea Godin Instagram Starkillers Instagram
