Some music has this rare characteristic to themselves that captures us with the moment. Instrumental music is the best to do this, and "Voyage" by the phenomenal Emmeffe is a quality example. Welcome to BuzzMusic Emmeffe! Talk to us about your upbringing and background I grew up with music. Since I was a child, I have taken up playing quite a few musical instruments. After studying classical piano, I focussed my attention on harmony, music theory, the use of synthesizers and studying pop, rock and funk guitar. What was the biggest driving force for you to pursue music and why? Unlike now, when I started playing not many kids used to learn to play an instrument, found bands or give concerts. Besides my strong passion for music, being a musician was then actually something unique and unconventional, especially in the small country town where I was born. In your own artist’s perspective, what was the theme for “Voyage”? Travelling always implies that you are slightly different from your old self when you come back. I have always associated the idea of change and rebirth to voyages. So, ‘Voyage’ is simply an invitation to close your eyes and being swept away by the music, each in their own personal voyage. Can you detail some of the arrangements you sought in “Voyage”? In a voyage, there is a start, a movement, some breaks, a destination, and a homecoming. In Voyage each of these moments is represented by a section: intro, verse, break, chorus, outro. In defining the sound I have used some sounds referring to far East, others evoking a sensation of infinite space ‘where everything moves, floats and changes to reach the surface and begin a new cycle’. What can be the most challenging aspect of creating instrumental music and why? In the absence of words, instrumental music can be easily associated with images. This confers great freedom to the listener since every individual is unique and everybody can awaken his or her own (unique: ma superfluous) imagination through music. What are you looking forward to in 2020 Emmeffe? In October 2019 Trust, my first album came out. Living in New York City, Emmrose is a 16-year-old artist currently attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts as a junior while writing, recording and performing her music all at the same time! Not in it for the fame, her passion is to share her poetic lyrics and introspective music which is inspired by famous Alt-Pop stars such as Billie Eilish and Lorde. Indie-Pop singer Emmrose released a single earlier in September called “Tonight” which is just shy of 30k views. With such a beautiful voice, have you received vocal training or did you practice and learn on your own? I have had real vocal training, outside and inside the school. I used to really like performing in musicals as a kid, and now I study classical music at La Guardia High School. I really like writing my own music, and with that, I work with a private instructor and my bandmates. What's the overall message you're trying to portray throughout “Hopeless Romantics”? Is it based on personal experience or about someone in particular? I don’t really want to get into it. But yes. I don’t like “flings”, so the lyrics are pretty much what happened. Word by word. Did your love for poetry spark your musical artistry? I wouldn’t say sparked, but it certainly helped a lot!  I’ve been writing songs for a while, and a few years after was when I really got into writing poetry. What's your journey been like into the world of a music artist? It’s been awesome playing shows around the city, and I really like working in the recording studio. This year I got a sync licensing deal with Secret Road, and that’s pretty amazing. I really look forward to working with them! Country music has always been a way of life for Joe Hanson. This all started with the sweet sounds at his local church in Naperville, Illinois. Tell us, what was it like auditioning and performing on the iconic TV shows The Voice and American Idol and how has this experience changed your music career? I very much enjoyed the audition process for both The Voice and American Idol. The staff was incredibly supportive and kind they really took care of the artists. I really enjoyed the process because It took me around the country to places I had never been before and allowed me to meet tons of amazing artists while making great memories. These experiences helped guide me along my journey in music and helped me realize that every artist has a unique gift with their artistry and that although these are great opportunities to fast track the dream of “making it” in music there’s no one way to get there. Touring throughout the country, what has been the most memorable city/venue for you to perform at and why? The most memorable show I’ve ever played was this past summer in my hometown Naperville IL at Ribfest playing the main stage opening up for Brantley Gilbert and Randy Houser. This was really special because I had gone to Ribfest ever since I was a kid watching the bands play and never thought I would be one of them one day on the same stage! It was a totally full-circle moment that I got to experience with all my family and friends who packed the venue out, not to mention I also released my first single “If The World Was A Small Town” that same day so it was a truly unforgettable memory! What was the inspiration behind the creation of “Young and Old”? Young Got Old is a very nostalgic anthem for youth and growing up. I remember while writing it with my co-writers (Jason Duke and Travis Smith) I pulled lots of inspiration from my high school days during summer nights when my best friends and I would do everything and anything even if we were doing nothing we had the best times just being young and reckless together. I always look back on those memories fondly and wish I could relive them. I hope that when people listen to these songs it can take them back to good times they had growing up and inspire the youth to really live and enjoy the moments before they slip away because they fly by without you realizing it. Which artists have been the most influential in creating your sound? I pull inspiration from a plethora of artists. I grew up listening to all kinds of music (country, Christian, pop, rock) and have really come to believe that artists shouldn’t be bound to one genre! Artists like Keith Urban and Rascall Flatts we’re definitely some early inspirations to me growing up and made me fall in love with country music originally. As an artist, my sound is always evolving and I’m constantly trying new things sonically to push myself as an artist by incorporating elements of pop and rock into the country. Hi Pink City and welcome to BuzzMusic! For those of us not familiar with your work can you tell us how you two meet and began making music? We met in grade 11 in drama class and have been inseparable ever since. It wasn’t until about 7 years later we began making music together. Lil Hunny randomly woke me up and was like “Hey, we should try rapping!” And I replied with “ Lol Okay sure let’s give it a go.” Then we ended up writing a couple of songs within a couple of hours and realized we were on to something. What stereotypes and defying norms are you trying to express in your tracks? Being a mixed-race LGBTQ+ male and her being a mixed-race female. These groups are very much underrepresented in the Hip-hop community. It would be amazing if we were the ones to give a voice to so many people who just love making music and let them know that it doesn’t matter who they love or what their gender is. If you got that fire you got that fire. Period Do you see yourselves incorporating other genres into your future works? Why or why not? We are mostly Hip-hop with R&b fusion, but I could see us collaborating with other genres if the opportunity arose. We’re all about challenging our self-growth and not staying in just one box. Which artists have had the biggest impact on your work? We have been listening to all types of genres growing up. Is there actually an acoustic grunge "scene" per se? There actually is and it's been going strong since the late 1990s. There is a special something about Wes Hampson's acoustic grunge record that brings on that feeling of being a teenager, heading over to your best friend's place to play Grand Theft Auto and eat White Castle all night. It's warm and comfortable, familiar but exciting. The album, titled "Uncertainty", really grasps that feeling and gives you something totally new simultaneously. Enticing guitars keep the record afloat with melodies and the vocals push that momentum all without losing that grunge aftertaste you find yourself craving more of once you start the LP. Top to bottom this record is strong and impressively is helmed by a single human. Hampson performs and records all the instruments and singing heard on the album. This seems to be something seen a bit more often now. One man bands relying on only themselves to get the sound they really wanted in the first place. It's just not always pulled off this well. Where did you find most of your influence musically from? Thank you for having me Buzzmusic! I love that my upbringing has a creative mixture of many cultural and geographical influences. My parents are from El Salvador and immigrated to Los Angeles and then to Saskatchewan, Canada when I was very young. Our home was always filled with the sound of music to accompany even the most mundane of activities. The sounds of Motown music, Latin music and top 40 always were playing in our home. As the years continued on so did my musical taste develop into a blend we have now of R&B, Soul and Pop.  Talk to us about your single “Repeat Affections”. What was the entire theme behind this song?  Repeat Affections tells the story of a lover finding herself at the crossroads of her relationship. The Latin dance beat brings to life the tension felt in the plea to fight to keep alive this out of-the-ordinary love. I wanted to write from the perspective that everyone is trying to love to the best of their abilities with the tools that they have. Relationships always demand you to be vulnerable with yourself and your partner. I chose to pick an upbeat carefree rhythm to contrast the pressure and strain the narrator is trying to convey in the melody. Where did you locate the inspiration behind this single? How would you describe the songwriting process?  Believe it or not but this song actually came to me in a dream. A little under a year ago I awoke out of a dream state with the first three lines and melody etched in my memory. I knew that there was something behind this song and I needed to continue to dig in deeper to find a melody and a theme. This songs full potential was full realized when I brought it to my producer Rabino who helped tweak lyrics and co write the 2nd verse with me. His production expertise and ear brought this song to the next level and assured me we had a hit.  What were some challenges you had to maneuver through when creating “Repeat Affections”? Being from a province in Canada that is known musically more for Roots and Folk based music. The challenge is finding collaborators who understand the Soul & Pop genre. Connecting with my producer in another province provided the missing pieces for this song. We are both great fans of R&B and Soul music and so there was a natural magic to the process. Little had to be said to be on the same page and it was worth it driving the 6 hours to make this project happen.  We’re excited about what 2020 will bring you, Denise Valle! What are you looking forward to in this upcoming year? 2019 was such an incredible year for me as an artist. I took the leap to leave my steady 9-5 and pursue music as full time as a I could. With taking that risk it has allowed me to have a assured sense of the direction I want my career and specifically this next year to go. 2020 will be the release of my debut EP titled “Repeat Affections” set to release early in the year. Something about when rappers strip away their “Tough Guy” act and get real and emotional with their music that’s just so invigorating. When BD Miguel showed us that despite the bangers they give us on the regular, they can get vulnerable with their songwriting and give us a deep insight into who they are, we knew they were the real deal. Wonder what song we’re talking about here? The sentimental release of the record “My Story” was raw. Starting with the production of the beat, the arrangement went from a melodic & soft introduction and had a transitional banger that really smacks you across the face. The lyrics in “My Story” were unguarded and felt like a personal diary written solely by BD Miguel. The melody of the hook was catchy and addictive. The hardest thing that I had to do was finding the money to pay for it all. I overcome these challenges by working overnight stock in Kroger. Let’s talk more about your track “Without You”. What was the inspiration behind the melodic and sentimental lyrics? In what ways were you able to relate to this song? Well, when I heard a beat it reminded me of the cuffing season. And around that time basketball starts kicking up so I knew that this song had to come out. I never made the basketball team in high school so around this time girls only wanted the baller. I was always without both so that's how I created the first line. Can you tell us about the arrangement you were going for when making this single? Yeah, when I made this song  The beat reminded me of 21 Savage so I knew I had to go hard. But as I Ran Thur the lyrics it gave me vision to make it like trap soul Free 6lack arrangement. Singer and songwriter Jannexee has been blessed with the opportunity to feature fellow local Houston artist Ydnasty. Together the Columbian and Mexican duo are showing their love and appreciation for the Latino community. Serrano’s new single “Kiero” is a song with dream Pop influences that will have you up and dancing! The singer effortlessly transitions between English and Spanish vocals, highlighting her message that diversity always wins. Tell us, what made you want to become an artist? Hi! So, I grew up heavily involved with music my whole life. I grew up in the church so I was always part of the choir and played the piano. Once, I reached middle school my parents so how much of an impact music had on me so they enrolled me in a music school to start obtaining my associates in voice performance. So music has always a part of my life. It wasn’t until recently after I graduated from college that I decided to just go for it and show my love for my music. Why is it so important that you incorporate Spanglish into all of your tracks? It is SO important to me because both my parents were born in Mexico. Growing up, Spanish was my first language. I did not know English until I started school. So to be completely honest my music being Spanglish is an actual depiction of how my brain is working. I do not think or respond only in one language. I wanted to show my bicultural and bi-literate roots in my music. I have been told that I have to change to only doing English before but the reality is that is not even how my brain operates. I want to express through my music how assimilation is not it especially in today’s world. For those of us that don’t know Spanish can you translate some of the lyrics in “Kiero” and explain how they complement the English verses? So Kiero is actually “like or want” in English. Kiero is actually spelled “Quiero” but the “Kiero” spelling is known as the slang way here in the US. So I wanted to take that and make that personal. “Kiero” is talking about a woman’s wish list based on what they want in a man. It starts in Spanish but translated in English means “late at night, I stay up alone. Thinking about where you are at these hours.” And then I continue in English,  “I chug all my f****** bottles and I leave them f****** empty like my poor heart is without knowing you.” So all my music, I believe almost paints a picture for the audience to feel what my music is expressing. You and Ydnasty have such a fun combined sound. What made you want to collaborate with him and what was it like recording together? So I had recently met Ydnasty at a Houston underground showcase and HIS ENERGY IS OUT OF THIS PLANET. I knew that I had to ask him to feature on “Kiero.” He is Colombian and his music is Spanglish as well so it was perfect. The recording was crazy like I said his energy is outta this world. We just kept feeding off each other’s ideas and it was dope. He actually encouraged me to sing more on it. Our engineer Tez is so talented and understands reggaeton and my sound, so it was definitely a team effort! Thanks for chatting with us.
